to think of ti, the kids woudl be a lot more scared of this album than gran trying to do ghost impersonations. The mood moves on to up tempo jazzy riffing jazzy riffs with, at times, a guitar sound that reminds me of Toni Iommi.Since, Sabbath is good in my book, this saves the album from the liquidizer.Still working as a beer mat though.Once the twiddling is over we enter the dark and mysterious world of echonig howling and screams (all of course still done in a musical way).Obviously gran has been Ushered out of the House, and Weird Uncle Al has come in the back door, a bit worse for wear, intent on rehashing his werewolf routine.Luckily for the listener he passes out and a new phase begins.BinLid has escaped form the local asylum and starts giving his best Yip Yip Blurble Blurble over facet of this very eclectic band that seemed to have total freedom of expression and took great care into exercizing that right sometimes going a tad too far.The first record is along the lines of CAN and it approaches but never reaches perfection of Krautrock heaven. The second record was a live improv of Yeti and IMOHO , this reaches perfection at some points , and one wonders how the dream " that music and peace could change the world" did not come about when listening to this.ADII album, and what a way to begin. These guys are afraid of nobody; their music snarls and lurches from your speakers like no other band I've heard.Oh, I haven't mentioned her?Well, apparently her voice is an acquired taste, but she truly knocks me out...In any case, the magical mix of all of ADII's broad talents is stunning to behold and is in full display on YETI, making this album indispensable for fans of "Krautrock" and adventurous music in general. This is Krautrock in the full mass of its power: huge, towering, dark and completely devoid of any happy optimism, but still bound full of energy.Instrumentally this album is pure magic with some great psychy sitar'ish acoustic guitar plucking and hand percussion interplay."Yeti" likley would be my personal fav...Side 2 consists of shorter, slightly more accessible tracks. All that said, I found it a difficult album to enjoy then, as do now.At first, I wasn't crazy about this one.Often considered one of the best and most important krautrock albums, Yeti (which was a double album when originally released on vinyl) is the result of Amon Duul, a large collective of German hippies who played strange psychedelic music and tried to spread their anarchist views, breaking into two factions. The original became entirely based in politics, all their albums actually resulted from one massive jam session. The epic opener "Soap Shop Rock" is probably the hilight. It contains several different sections, jumping between them at will. Some won't be crazy about it, since this is as challenging as their music gets, but some will love the wildness, and those are the kind of people who need a copy of Yeti in their collection right now.TDream, Art, faust and can.II can be linked to countrymen Can and Faust (and a few others I haven't heard, I'll bet). After all, all three German groups were children of the 60s, who locked themselves up, dosed on psychedelics and improvised music accordingly.Yeti may contain a little too much improvisation for its own good, and thus is probably not as strong as its successor Tanz Der Lemminge, but it's still among my favourite German prog albums of all time!II is superior in every department.Amon Duul reminds me off ...Shaking King which is more psychedelic bluesy jamming.Chalk it up to TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS syndrome, the temptation to gratuitously overextend everything when presented with the luxury of a double album.Kaleidoscope, etc, replete with bongos, but with better production. Will it be a nice surprise or a nasty one?If you're considering getting into Krautrock, you could do worse than start here.CD) improvised in the studio. In all honesty, I must say that I am shocked.Shocked that I am just the second registered forum member (and first collaborator) to give this album the full five stars it deserves.Thankfully, however, the similarities end there. The music of the two are radically different.Amon Duul II take a more psychedelic hard folk rock approach to their music. Before I get into the album more deeply, let me present a brief history of Amon Duul II.They and Amon Duul I (a band I have not yet come to discover) were originally joined as one commune, called Amon Duul. The commune split into two factions, one wanting to focus on the political side of things, one on the musical end (Amon Duul II being the musical faction).Amon Duul II, the musical faction, came out on the losing end.Amon Duul II, meanwhile, endured multiple lineup changes and went on to produce such wonderful albums as Phallus Dei, Tanz Der Lemminge, Wolf City, and, of course, Yeti.It is indeed a monster of an album, but only in the sense that it was innovative and groundbreaking and stood for so much and did so much new that only a monster of an album could possibly maintain itself with all that content.Soap Shop Rock, perhaps the greatest song they ever recorded. There are traces of hard rock here, but all focus should be put on the song as a whole, and not the individual styles in encompasses (of which there are many), for it truly gels as a single piece of absolutely stunning music. Also, keep in mind that anything I say about this song or any song on this album that sounds like a negative I mean as a plus, because there is nothing wrong with this album as I see it (hence the perfect masterpiece rating).Cerberus is right on the level of Archangel Thunderbird. It revolves around psychedelic folk and serves as a hypnotic and infectious instrumental that anchors the album as a classic. You can sample the song on this site, and I strongly advise you do, for if you like it at all you will like this album. Also, keep in mind that while it sounds great out of context, it sounds unbelievably awesome in context. For its finish, it takes on a marvelous hard rock nature with great twin guitars that is one of the single greatest moments on this album (not surprising, considering that this is among the greatest songs on this album that is among the greatest albums).Krautrock, a combination they perfected with this album. This tendency loses the interest of the mainstream audience because of uncommerciality, and it loses the prog rock audience for the exact same reason.Fragile album, where most of the songs only work in context). Many jam bands never quite realized this, and their music ended up, not surprisingly, as an unlistenable mess.Amon Duul II, on the other hand, perfectly grasped this concept, and it shows. How blissfully wrong I was.As far as you can call it an epic, Yeti is among my favorites. The same goes for Yeti Talks to Yogi (essentially Yeti part 2) and Sandoz in the Rain (the only improvisation with vocals). If you choose to accept them, you will be able to form your own opinion on them. This is an album everyone ought to own, for it is a landmark of Krautrock.Avant Prog, there really is no easy way in.Agitation Free, Guru Guru, Gila (two first), Gaa...The Incredible String Band's late 60s work.Overall, this is a very diverse and special album."Soap Shop Rock" is almost 14 minutes long and is divided into four parts. Some violin as male and female vocals join in.This is a 3 minute instrumental.""The Return Of Ruebezahl" has an Eastern sound to it.Shaking King" is a very psychedelic tune with crazy vocals. The final song on the first album is called "Pale Gallery"."Between the Eyes" is a heavy tune with some crazy vocals.Since the 70s my preference was always on listening to the second LP with the improvisations. They show their musical potential without a doubt. The vocals are also very special.Absolutely fascinating and I'm quite sure this could only played in that way under well dosed drug influence.Psychedelic guitars, often very sentimental and melancholic, various bass playing, hypnotic repetitive but also detached as a solo instrument and a very interesting drum timing.Although "Tanz der Lemminge" is largely considered as the best classic Amon Duul II album, I prefer "Yeti".Have not heard anything quite like this...The opener soap shop rock is unbelievable, it has all the right ingredients and is one of the best AD2 songs. The YETI improvisations are amazing too (but maybe a little too long)....You are not logged, please login before continuing. If you are not, please consult the guidelines for sending your comments before doing so.II as the most representative, arguably the most creative, and arguably the most popular.German intellectuals that formed in the late Sixties.II was dark, depressing, cold and mechanic. They were, if you wish, the closest German analogy of Yes, their main concern being not the music itself, but rather the special 'otherworldly' feeling induced by the music. As for the music itself, it's pretty good.Yeti and Tanz Der Lemminge).Seventies period, which I myself am still only vaguely familiar with (so yeah, my collection is only starting, so sue me!Vive La Trance, for instance, would be a perfect departure.Chris Karrer was one of the main founding fathers, and his concepts and violin playing are crucial for the band's early period. The musical heart of the band, though, seems to have been guitarist John Weinzierl, whose riffs and solos are the real meat.Heinz Hausmann on others. Now let's move on to the records.Faust or early Kraftwerk. They really intend to scare you, enchant you, and impress you, and they often succeed. To say they weren't pretentious would be defying the laws of gravity. But they were justified!Somewhat pointless and even 'stripped' in comparison to what would follow. The music itself is pretty mediocre, though.II's further success are here already, but they're nothing but seeds. But there are several problems as well.Second, the vocals flat out suck.Again, it wouldn't make a true appearance until the next album.Take the title track, for instance. It occupies the entire second side of the LP and goes on for more than twenty minutes, but what does it DO?Essentially, it's just a jam.And when we're speaking of jamming, I will certainly turn my attention to Can, at least, when we're speaking of SIMPLE jamming.Michael Karoli, for instance.Mellotron astral noises and demonic laughter, at times alternating with what seems to be some stern German martial anthems. The Mellotron work is by far the most significant of the composition's elements: I mean, while much of this is indeed ripped off from the dark cosmic fantasies of Pink Floyd, that futuristic keyboard sound was never really developed fully enough by the Floydsters.Phallus Dei' and thus pack in a lot more of that precious atmosphere, although they also seem pretty poor compared to the glory of Yeti. The guy on the album cover does look pretty similar to a yeti, indeed, although in reality it seems to have been one of the band's sound engineers.Ah, those crazy Germans with their warped sense of humour...Anyway, Yeti is a double album (thankfully, now on one CD), half of which is supposed to be 'polished' studio recordings and half live improvising.Contrary to first impression, there is a difference: on first putting on the 'polished' part of the album, you'd think the music is so erratic and messy that...THIS is 'polished', then what's the next part look like?Queen popularized the idea). But they compensate for it with heavy atmospherics and their amasing visionarism. This is Krautrock in the full mass of its power: huge, towering, dark and completely devoid of any happy optimism, just like the typical soul of a German philosopher. She Came Through The Chimney' (what is this, a parody on 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window'?Cerberus' bounces along like an upbeat folkey dirge (I know that hardly makes sense, but what the hell, this whole experience hardly makes any) before being transformed into an astral boogie.Shaking King' could certainly lead quite a few people on the brink of suicide, acting as the final straw.Yeti' that occupies an entire side of the album.Bring out the spellbooks!Stumbling Over Melted Moonlight; 6) Toxicological Whispering. Many fans consider this the band's peak, too, so I'm not alone on this one.It is pretty much all instrumental: sure, there are some male voices blabbering out pure gibberish in English and occasionally German from time to time, but the lyrics hardly mean anything at all this time around: not even a single creepy story about burning sisters or something, just meaningless wordplay which was later suitably appropriated from the German guys by Brian Eno for Before And After Science. They are also steadily rhythmic: these guys didn't give a damn about weird tempo changes and prime atonal messes, and so it's very easy to give yourself in to what's happening around. That said, I'd like to add a few words in defense of the 'Chamsin Soundtrack', subtitled 'The Marilyn Monroe Memorial Church' (what a cool title). It's like a tense, grappling journey through...By 1972, the band's formula was reduced to...But this time around, it's just a bore.It was hardly possible to separate one track from another, much less to remember even a little distinct melody or something.Only after an innumerable number of listens something actually climbs out, like the bouncy rhythm of 'Kronwinkl 12' or something like that.San Francisco or psychedelic London. That said, here's the good news.I'm actually starting to doubt its former presence at all.Was there any magic in the first place, or was I just lulled by the first impression?OR of nine, the highest rating I can afford to such a boring and unoriginal product, if only out of respect for the guys and girls.Actually, I was very surprised to learn that Wolf City came in between Carnival In Babylon and whatever followed it, because its overall sound is certainly more grim and less 'poppy' than on either of those two 'compromised' records. But let's face the facts anyway. But just unlike Carnival, all of these songs, or at least most of them, rule. And yes, the album cover and title are absolutely perfect. When I saw the Babylon cover, I thought this was going to be a messy, druggy, 'orgiastic' record with a lot of shock potential, and I was overtly disappointed at the slightness of it all.But these aren't the songs that bring traditional images of whips and chains and torture and inquistion and Bruce Dickinson to mind. And above all that, some really good melodies. This is impressive, economic, immaculate Krautrock at its best. Here's a perfect soundtrack to you.You know, it actually takes effort and genius to make your guitars sound so desperate and suicidal, but these guys improve in that respect every time.Death and destruction just seem to spread their wings over that song...Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge' is almost like a hippie anthem, for God's sake!Wolf City is not perfect.II ever had, of course, only if we take the album cover in consideration.Track listing: 1) What You Gonna Do?Lothar Meid), so the album was credited to the band Utopia (not to be confused with Todd Rundgren's Utopia, of course).II fan if only for 'The Wolfman Jack Show', perhaps the band's best ever take on this kind of mystical crap. That said, the direct Gothic style is mainly limited to this particular track, as well as to an alternate version of 'Deutsch Nepal' found here (and if you remember that one right, 'Deutsch Nepal' isn't supposed to be at all scary what with the lead vocalist's coughing fits and all).In that way, radical fans won't need it, but moderate fans would get their kicks for all they're worth.Las Vegas' mixes modern jazz and Latin rhythms with...When you've already heard all of the band's output from 1969 to 1972, such a lighthearted compromised album as Utopia won't be causing any great shakes. And no this should NOT be blamed on Russian pirates, as I've read the official band homepage complain on just the same issue).German joke on the part of their friendly neighbours, but don't quote me on that. The particularly good news is that Vive La Trance completely leaves behind the formulaicness of some of the band's previous efforts (Carnival In Babylon, eh?II's forte: most of the melodies are nothing special, without particularly obvious hooks or notorious guitar riffs. This is understandable, of course, since the band's specialty was always the raw sound rather than its strict moulding into shape, but occasionally it really gets on my nerves, especially when after the tenth listen I pick up the CD cover and cannot remember the melody of even one of the eleven tracks contained therein.Come to think of it, who can really prove this is that much of a departure? On the other hand, it's still better than just letting the former style run dry on something like Carnival In Babylon. The exact relation of this song to Mozambique is unclear, but the thunderous bliss of the rocking part reminds me more of the Twelve Horsemen than of an obscure African country anyway. Now what the hell is all this supposed to...?Now whether you take or leave these shorter tracks is completely up to you.Not openly lugubrious, but deeply unsafe in their essence. As you know, I don't usually have a problem when a formerly 'bizarre' or 'complex' band takes the fatal decision to make its work more accessible, not if this doesn't poorly influence the quality of the melodies.Yes, I believe that Vive La Trance could have been a better album if the band had incorporated more of its weirdness into the 'normal' structures of these songs, instead of mainly concentrating that weirdness in the first few songs and 'Mozambique', but even the current result is no slouch, either.Somebody enlighten me, I'm at a loss. The weird thing is, it's not ALL that different from Led Zeppelin when you get to the bottom of it.Thirty years later, though, when the exact chronology has all gone blurred anyway, it's a gas to hear these performances, capturing the band in their real prime: all of the material is taken over from Yeti and Tanz Der Lemminge, with none of the 'compromises' of their later records evident. But that's hardly a serious complaint when we're discussing a live show. And did they ever succeed. They might make these little mental notes when listening to your records, but onstage, you gotta go for the guts.British hard rock scene.Which means they're not really 'compromising', just rearranging their compositions to kick more ass.Meid joins the frenzy with his heavily fuzzed out bass pattern.Archangels Thunderbird' is short and up to the point: three minutes of fuzz and frenzy to warm up the feelings.Easily the biggest highlight on side 1 is, of course, their rendition of 'Eye Shaking King'.Weinzierl, while Renate is adding her little yelps and wails to help the proceedings. The bonus tracks on the recent CD edition are a bit of a disappointment, though. That said, a bonus is a bonus. The worst thing about the bonus is you're not supposed to complain about bonuses, because, rather like entry to the United States, it's your privilege to have one, not your right.Bavaria, Munich, and King Ludwig the Second, the famous Mad King Ludwig of Bayern. In case you never heard of the gent, I'll spare you a historical excourse and take the opportunity to heavily promote Gabriel Knight II: The Beast Within, one of the best adventure games ever written (the other two, as you might have guessed, are Gabriel Knight I and Gabriel Knight III).Perversely, it's the single LP edition that made it onto CD, which I deeply lament: all the songs are so good that I'm pretty sure there'd be very little filler on the double LP.The only reason this record gets denied a 10 is that, well, want it or not, it does betray some of the band's usual idiosyncrasy. But on the other hand, if you're scared shitless by the prospect of plunging right inside the band's least accessible records but would want to give 'em a try anyway, there's no better initial choice than Made In Germany.II, but never in their life would the Eagles have thought of embellishing the song with such a romantic, beautiful organ melody and that ominous bass melody occasionnaly emerging out of the banjo thunderstorms. You get my impression, don't you?II of old, at least partially.II, it manages to suddenly change gear right in the middle and go from an inoffensive danceable tune (although why does the guitar sound so menacing if it's inoffensive?Fortunately, this one here follows the latter case.Only Uriah Heep didn't have such excellent Dylanish lyrics.Or such a moderate, adequate singer.Chuck Berry beat' in the final verses.Ludwig concept is present, it's pretty compact, but when it isn't, it isn't, and it really isn't present on at least half of the tracks.Faust's So Far, the perfect place to disprove the common false belief that Krautrockers were only good at noisemaking and couldn't write excellent pop material. On the contrary, it is my sincere belief that only people who have mastered the pop form to excellency can have the right to advance to more complex musical forms.Ask Mr Brian Eno, he's sure to know the answer to that one.Made In Germany to this?Klaus Ebert, both songwriters and singers.Weinzierl contributes one track, Karrer contributes another, the entire band collaborates on a third one, and, unsurprisingly, these three turn out to be the best compositions on here.Umm, yeah, well, no dice, guys.Shaking King' was a frightening atmospheric rocker.I'm not going to bother discussing this tripe any more.II's moodiness, although, to be fair, they didn't use Eastern motives that often.Mellotrons, too, at times. They say it was the only song off this album they retained a soft spot for by keeping it in their live setlists. It is surprisingly lightweight for such a guy as Weinzierl, but hey, at least if he's selling out, he's not making a complete ass of himself like these new guys.I'd even go as far as to say there really is a hippiesque vibe to it, something San Franciscan in the air, which is, of course, completely ridiculous given the year of the album's release. Then again, given how badly Zauner and Ebert wanted to be clones of your average MOR band, this probably applies to the veterans only).Considering these three songs are the lengthiest on the album, I can't honestly say that it was just moving from bad to worst all the time. But even these 'highlights' really only look like highlights against the trash that Ebert and Zauner are laying down on us.You know what they actually remind me of?It's all in the notes man.But there aren't any notes here!Or, if there are, I haven't noticed them.So much for the indomitable German spirit. You don't meet lines like these on Alice Cooper records, doncha?Alcoholics Anonymous badge on his coat and tons of plans for the future. Now that I think of it, of course, with Knaup, Karrer, and Meid coming back together to make music again, they had to make something good. But, of course, when we say 'pop' here, we don't mean it the Madonna way or the Fleetwood Mac way.We, essentially, mean that the record is accessible, and that's where its normalness ends.Thematically, the album is said to be revolving around the practical doctrines of Carlos Castaneda (apparently, somebody was a fan?Castaneda's brand of mystical teachings has never gotten me intrigued into learning more. The songs may be long, but they're never boring. The title track, for instance. Each and every one of ten songs has its own perfect individuality carved out, yet somehow they all mesh together quite well.I've heard (although, granted, a bit too repetitive in comparison to the other songs). As much as I hate the generic techno beat, especially when it's used by dinosaurs like the Moody Blues in order to bring 'hipness' into their world, this thing is totally ingenious and makes up for one of the strangest 'musical contrasts' within a song ever.Renate Knaup in a totally Arabic fashion (so that 'kiss ma eee!II, but, believe it or not, that's exactly the way it ends.Spanish music actually grew out of Arabic one) and in the wonderful 'Black Pearl Of Wisdom', with subtle guitar flourishes I'd never have expected from this kind of band.Unfortunately, that's about the hardest part.In the long run, you're lucky to actually learn of this record's existence, let alone actually acquire it.II, restructured and remodelled so as to present themselves as a Nineties band, and they still rule mah world.Oops, you thought this was for the money?Leave money concerns for Blondie and the Rolling Stones. Those crazy Japanese will release (and tolerate) anything. It's always nice to hear a Japanese introduction of a German band singing in English.Makes people realize just how small the world actually is.That's right, they do 'Lilac Lillies' on here, and midway through, drummer Wolf Wolff does launch into the required beat, and does it just as fast.Japanese audience in a dirty little Tokyo club which is probably stuffed with Tatu clones most of the time these days.Like 'Black Pearls Of Wisdom'!The Wolf City numbers are...Deutsch Nepal', but that's about the only complaint.I'm taking this out of context, but then again, so might these Japanese fans).Minutes() * 60 + album.Nonetheless, aside from the occasional violin, the instrumentation here comprises rock instruments first and foremost.Catchy riffs and drum beats maintain a sense of accessibilty which a ton of guitar and violin soloing drives forward the improvisational nature of the music.I'm not going to try to describe the feel of the music, you just have to hear it.The songs themselves are a mixture of shorter composed pieces and longer jams. The title track itself weighs in at 18 minutes and sounds almost wholly improvised. If you're looking to get into Amon Duul II or krautrock in general, or just
