Info: Biography, Pictures, Discography of all CDs & DVDs
Anthony Braxton (born June 4, 1945 in Chicago) is an American composer, saxophonist, clarinettist, flautist, pianist and philosopher. He has created a large body of highly complex work.John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.Whatever one calls it, however, there is no questioning the originality of his vision; Anthony Braxton created music of enormous sophistication and passion that was unlike anything else that had come before it."Discography 4 Notes and references 5 Bibliography 6 External links 6.In 1968, Braxton recorded the double LP For Alto. The album's songs were dedicated to Cecil Taylor and John Cage, among others.Braxton has also recorded and collaborated with European free improvisers such as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, and the Globe Unity Orchestra, or with giants from the 'regular' jazz world, such as Max Roach. In addition, during the 1990s and early 2000s Braxton created a prodigiously large body of "standards" recordings, often featuring him as a pianist rather than saxophonist. He has taught at Mills College and now is Professor of Music at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, teaching music composition, music history, and improvisation. One of his children, Tyondai Braxton, is also a professional musician.Music Braxton's music is difficult to categorize, and because of this, he likes to reference his works (and the works of his collaborators and students) as simply "creative music."While his compositions and improvisations can be characterized as avant garde, many of his pieces have a swing feel and rhythmic angularity that are overtly indebted to Charlie Parker and the Bebop tradition.Braxton's titles had become increasingly complex.Current Musical Involvement Anthony Braxton, even in his 60s, still actively performs with ensembles of varying sizes, and has to date written well over 350 compositions.University of Chicago, 1994.Listening Breakfast Conversation in Concert: Anthony Braxton interviewed by Roland Young, Glen Howell, on the concept: The Knitting Factory presented six nights of Anthony Braxton and his music, in all the variety of its vision.Composition 102, with giant puppets. As with The Kitchen, all six nights included a full house and enthusiastic response.Anthony Braxton is widely and critically acclaimed as a seminal figure in the music of the late 20th century.European art music as defined by Schoenberg, Stockhausen, Xenakis, Varese and others.Books, anthology chapters, scholarly studies, reviews and interviews and other media and academic attention to him and his work have also accumulated steadily and increasingly throughout those years, and continue to do so.His teaching career, begun at Mills College in Oakland, California, has become as much a part of his creative life as his own work, and includes training and leading performance ensembles and private tutorials in his own music, computer and electronic music, and history courses in the music of his major musical influences, from the Western Medieval composer Hildegard of Bingen to contemporary masters with whom he himself has worked (e.Click your browser's Refresh button to try reconnecting.Click your extraordinary career. Many of the mainstream's most popular musicians (Wynton Marsalis among them) insisted that Braxton's music was not jazz at all.Whatever one calls it, however, there is no questioning the originality of his vision; Anthony Braxton created music of enormous sophistication and passion that was unlike anything else that had come before it.Braxton began playing music as a teenager in Chicago, developing an early interest in both jazz and classical musics.Braxton lived in Paris for a short while beginning in 1969, where he played with a rhythm section comprised of bassist Dave Holland, pianist Chick Corea, and drummer Barry Altschul. The '70s saw his star rise (in a manner of speaking); he recorded a number of ambitious albums for the major label Arista and performing in various contexts.Braxton maintained a quartet with Altschul, Holland, and a brass player (either trumpeter Kenny Wheeler or trombonist George Lewis) for most of the '70s.During the decade, he also performed with the Italian free improvisation group Musica Elettronica Viva, and guitarist Derek Bailey, as well as his colleagues in AACM.In 1985, he began teaching at Mills College in California; he subsequently joined the music faculty at Wesleyan College in Connecticut, where he taught through the '90s.At the beginning of the 21st century, Braxton was still a vital presence on the creative music scene.Music and the eMusic logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks in the USA or other countries and eMusic Remote is a trademark of eMusic.Anthony Braxton New York, composer, and no surprise that Braxton would want to pay tribute to his impressive legacy. In his heydey, Monk was preceived as some kind of mad scientist of music. The same is true of Braxton, who took things a step further by infamously titling some of his compositions with some ornate equations.Art Lange highlights a Bill Evans quote about Monk; it easily applies to Mr.We can be further grateful to him for combining aptitude, insight, drive, compassion, fantasy, and whatever else makes the total artist, and we should also be grateful for such direct speech in an age of insurmountable getting into Free Jazz, Anthony Braxton was Beyond Forbidding. This was the guy who used CHEMICAL EQUATIONS FOR SONG TITLES!Without hearing a note, I filed his work away as Bloodless Egghead
