BeauSoleil is a musical group specializing in Cajun music.BeauSoleil tours extensively in the U.Lyrics on BeauSoleil recordings are sung in English or Cajun French (and sometimes both in one song). The band's name is a tribute to Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil, the leader of the Acadian resistance to British deportation efforts beginning in 1755.BeauSoleil was eventually captured, but following his imprisonment managed to lead 193 exiles to Louisiana before he died in 1765.BeauSoleil has appeared on soundtracks to films The Big Easy, Passion Fish and Belizaire the Cajun.BeauSoleil appears regularly on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion radio show.BeauSoleil has also performed in concert with Mary Chapin Carpenter and opened for the Grateful Dead.BeauSoleil was born at the right moment for a new band to develop along with a rebirth of interest in Cajun culture in Louisiana, and the group undoubtedly helped the expanding interest in (and, some would say, exploitation of) Cajun music and cultural symbols in the United States, France, and in many other countries. In Louisiana in the 1950s and 1960s when Michael Doucet was growing up, the musical heritage of Acadie (French for "Acadia") had aged, withered, and certainly wasn't considered cool, even for people of Acadian descent.Doucet was awarded a Folk Arts Apprenticeship by the National Endowment of the Arts.He studied their techniques and songs and encouraged some to resume public performances.Recognition BeauSoleil is one of a few groups performing traditional Louisiana music to win a Grammy Award.Gitane Cajun, released on Vanguard Records, earned the group its tenth Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album.BeauSoleil has also earned a Grammy nomination in the Contemporary Folk category, for the 1999 album Cajunization, with songs that effortlessly span Cajun, Calypso, French ballad, blues and other musical styles. This page was last modified 07:21, 13 January 2008.All text is available under was an associate of the Charles Manson "Family", and was convicted of killing music teacher and Manson family associate Gary Hinman on July 27, 1969.He has been imprisoned since then.Music Career Circa 1965, Beausoleil was a member of Arthur Lee's band The Grass Roots (not The Grass Roots of "Midnight Confessions" and "Live For Today" fame) which later changed its name to Love.Lee claimed to have bestowed the nickname "Bummer Bob" upon Beausoleil due to a drug burn.Circa 1966, Beausoleil joined a band called The Orkustra; bandmate David LaFlamme went on to greater success with It's a Beautiful Day.Following his stint in the Orkustra, Beausoleil put together the band he called The Magick Powerhouse of Oz.Film Roles Beausoleil was to star in Kenneth Anger's Lucifer Rising but little was shot before Beausoleil and Anger had a falling out and the project was abandoned. He also appeared in a soft porn film titled The Ramrodder (a.This film was shot, in part, at the infamous Spahn Ranch.Accompanying Beausoleil that night were Susan Atkins and Mary Brunner, both later involved in other murders.Beausoleil claims that Hinman supplied him with a batch of bad (or weak) mescaline which Beausoleil in turn sold to the Straight Satans motorcycle gang. When the bikers demanded their money back, Beausoleil went to Hinman, who refused to pay. While Beausoleil, Atkins and Brunner held him captive in his own home in an attempt to convince him to refund the money, things went from bad to worse when Manson (whom Beausoleil had phoned) showed up and sliced Hinman's face and ear with a long knife or bayonet. It ended with Beausoleil stabbing Hinman to death the next day.On August 6, 1969, Beausoleil was arrested while driving one of Hinman's vehicles. At Beausoleil's two trials for the murder, the defense mentioned nothing about the murder being the result of a drug burn.Beausoleil's first revelation of this came in 1981, 12 years after the murders, in an interview published in Oui magazine. In that interview, he denied that Manson had come to the Hinman residence during the event that led to Hinman's murder, although he now states that this did happen.See Helter Skelter (Manson scenario) for more details on the murders perpetrated by Charles Manson and members of his Family.Just prior to the exhibition, the gallery exhibited photos of Sharon Tate. The parole board, in denying parole in 2005, stated that this display and marketing of Beausoleil's artwork was exploitative of the victims and showed a lapse of judgement by Beausoleil. He has consistently been denied parole.Jailhouse Interview: Bobby Beausoleil and the Manson Murders. This page was last modified 21:09, 11 January 2008.Festivals Acadiens in Lafayette Oct.Liberty Theater in Eunice, Nov.BeauSoleil
