| Bob Catley is a British musician, perhaps best known as the lead singer of the rock band Magnum.He went on to attend the nearby Central Grammar School and left to start an apprenticeship at the GPO before deciding on a musical career shortly after meeting similarly minded individuals at college.The line up was Bob Catley (vocals) Paul Sargent (guitar) Charlie Harrison (bass) (replaced later by Dave Morgan), Dave Bailey (keyboards) and John 'Pank' Panteny (drums).Paradox went on to play festivals in Holland and Italy before splitting up on their return to the Uk in 1970.Joining Clarkin and Catley were drummer Kex Gorin and bassist Dave Morgan (later a member of ELO).UK, and included several songs that would be mainstays of the bands live set, notably "Soldier Of The Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit".This success continued in the following years with the Roger Taylor produced Vigilante in 1986, the top 5 album Wings Of Heaven in 1988, and the Keith Olsen produced Goodnight L.In the summer of 1995 Tony Clarkin announced the band were to split following a farewell tour of the UK and Europe.Thunder drummer Harry James.Germany, the bands biggest market outside of the UK along with Scandinavia.He was first approached by Gary Hughes (frontman of Rock band Ten) in 1998 to write a solo album.The Tower was written with classic Magnum very much in mind and harks back to On A Storyteller's Night style pomp meeting Wings Of Heaven style AOR with a very 90s melodic rock production.The Tower was released in 1998 and was critically acclaimed.Then decided to release an "official bootleg" of the set.During the summer of 1999 recording commenced on Bob's second solo album Legends.Bob toured the UK extensively during 2000 with Paul Hodson and Native Cain providing his backing band.Bob's third album Middle Earth, which was based on J.Tolkien's epic The Lord of the Rings.UK and European dates with Ten later in the year.Regan (Guitars), Al Barrow (Bass) and Jamie Little (Drums).Official Bob Catley Site

questions.Why did you decide to compose an album inspired by The Lord of the Rings?Fear of the Dark was based in Middle Earth, but there is no direct
connection with any of the characters.Then we did Legends, which was based on legendary characters and literature.And I said, OK,
I'm getting scared now.We only work on the big stuff.So we said, let's stop talking about it and actually
do it.This is something we might never have the chance to do again.It couldn't be any worse than that, could it?It would be a darn
sight warmer as well.It's nice to see kids, when they read Tolkien for the first
time, how deeply they get into it.And then it's
all about creating and adding to it, but without detracting from it.At the same time, we didn't want to do anything that deviated too much
from the story.So I said to Bob, why don't we just do songs
'inspired' by the story?So tell us a little bit more about the songs.But we tried to use one or two place names in the songs
to give that particular song a 'root', somewhere where it touches ground.It's encouraging that they are keeping the films a trilogy, and that
they are all being filmed at the same time.As to the music, I was quite worried about how it would
be received.We're revisiting our childhood in many respects.I've probably been there.Did you have this project in mind when you first contacted Bob
three years ago?As a Magnum fan, it was down
to my perception of Bob as being this Tolkienesque character, this Storyteller.Gary's got some very good orchestral sounds on the keyboards.You'll close your eyes and it'll
be like Ben Hur, or Gladiator.You can't 'fudge'
them.Based on the idea that Frodo would gladly give Galadriel the One Ring,
at a time when she is supposed to be testing his resolve.Sauron and seek the fire where the ring was
made.Do you think this is the best music you have written?Bob's reputation, you have to make sure
you do the best you can, all the time.Gary leaves at this point to continue mixing the album.Can you remember your first experience of Lord of the Rings?We studied The Lord of the Rings and
it stuck with me.I'm not an expert by any means, but I'm definitely
a fan, and I wanted to put it to music.It's very exciting, but it's going to take a year to
complete.Wakeman and I'm going to be working with those two again on the Hound

and, above all, great songs.Put all that together, and it's very good
