| Caliban is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's The Tempest, a deformed monster who is the slave of Prospero.While he is referred to as a mooncalf, a freckled whelp, he is the only human inhabitant of an island that is otherwise "not honored with a human form."In some traditions he is depicted as a wild man, or a beast man, or sometimes a mix of fish and man, stemming from the confusion of two of the characters about what he is, found lying on a beach.Caliban is the son of the witch Sycorax by (according to Prospero) a devil.Banished from Algiers, Sycorax was left on the isle, pregnant with Caliban, and died before Prospero's arrival.Caliban refers to Setebos as his mother's god.Prospero explains his harsh treatment of Caliban by claiming that after initially befriending him, Caliban attempted to rape Miranda.Caliban confirms this gleefully, saying that if he hadn't been stopped he would have peopled the island with a race of calibans.Prospero then enslaves Caliban and torments him.Resentful of Prospero, Caliban takes Stephano, one of the shipwrecked servants, as a god and as his new master, after being given some of Stephano's wine.Caliban urges Stephano to kill Prospero and become lord of the island.Caliban learns that Stephano is neither a god nor Prospero's equal in the conclusion of the play, however, and Caliban agrees to obey Prospero again.Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.More obviously, Caliban is a close anagram of "cannibal".Other interpretations and references
Caliban was originally mostly a comic figure; however, in later years, he became a symbol for the wild, natural man.And, in more recent times, Caliban has been used as a metaphor for colonialism by various postcolonial intellectuals.The fact that neither Caliban nor Sycorax are native to the island, but were exiled there in much the same way as Prospero and Miranda, is often overlooked in this view.But I don't give a damn for your power

road was.It actually turned out to be a decent, one lane road.It was a Saturday, so there
wasn't much heavy goods traffic to hold us up and the scenery was considerably more interesting than along the almost unerringly straight toll road.That's because the old road passes straight through all of the towns en route, instead of skirting around them.We continued the extra few kilometres to our
hotel and settled in for the night.DHCP server here appears to be dead.Where's cruise control when you need it?The Zona Hotelera resort area truly is a blot on the landscape, consisting largely of an endless array of awful American chain eateries, including everything from Starbucks to Hooters.That place was out of this world: nice surroundings, friendly waiters, good music and excellent overall value for money.In short, it was one of the best Mexican meals I've ever eaten.Just avoid the Zona Hotelera like the plague.We could have taken their valuables and done a runner.Nevertheless, it's a charming, bustling city that has not succumbed to the pressures of tourism that have turned its easterly neighbour into a grotesque neon nightmare.You get used to it after a while.With Born 12th May 2005 at 19:00 PDT.This is primarily because neither of us speaks decent Spanish.Plenty of people speak English here, but that still leaves plenty who don't.We're in Mexico, after all.Ordinarily, I can just about get by in Spanish when ordering food, but there are so many things on the menu here that I've just never heard of.Many of the Mexican dishes are actually Yucatecan or Mayan specialities and it's very hard to figure out what's in them.It's not all huevos rancheros, you know.Just be firm and say no.It's harder when someone suddenly appears from nowhere and acts as an impromptu tour guide during your visit to the cathedral.The friendliness turns a little frostier when you politely decline.They've been warm and welcoming, especially with Born 12th May 2005 at 19:00 PDT.Weighed in at 3400g and measured 51cm.Tomorrow, we head out of town for Uxmal, the site of an ancient ruined Mayan city.After this, it should be relatively short hops. |
