1.Pain drummer Tony Thompson join the band.But before that, the immediate success of their debut album Chic and the hits "Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" and "Everybody Dance" sent Chic out on the road.This album contained club hit "Saturday".To facilitate Wright's solo career, intended to be parallel to her Chic career, the band had agreed to sign her to a separate contract and label.She was replaced by Alfa Anderson, who had been on back up vocals on Chic's debut album."Le Freak" and "Good Times"
In late 1978 the band released C'est Chic, containing one of their best known tracks, "Le Freak".The title was changed for obvious reasons after they realized they had a hit on their hands.It is still the biggest selling single, ever, of Atlantic's parent company Warner.For the Sister Sledge project, Edwards and Rogers wrote and produced "He's the Greatest Dancer" (originally intended to be a Chic song) in exchange for "I Want Your Love" (originally intended to be performed by Sister Sledge)."Good Times", one of the most important and influential songs of the era."Rapper's Delight", and has been endlessly sampled since by many dance and hip hop acts.Sister Sledge's albums We Are Family (1979) and Love Somebody Today (1980) , Sheila and B.Luther Vandross, who sang on several of Chic's albums, and helped define the distinctive vocal style of Chic.Rodgers and Edwards separately produced records for a wide variety of artists.Madonna's first proper hit single, 1983's "Holiday" was just like Blondie's "Rapture" and Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight" both heavily influenced and a tribute to the Chic sound in general and "Good Times" in particular.Though it is seldom noted, "Like a Virgin" might be considered a Chic album of sorts in that it reunited Rogers, Thompson, Edwards, keyboardist Rob Sabino, and collaborators Jeff Bova and Jimmy Bralower.Thompson and Edwards worked with the super group Power Station on its 1985 hit LP as well as Power Station lead singer Robert Palmer's solo smash Riptide that same year (both of which Edwards produced).After a 1992 birthday party where Rodgers, Edwards, Paul Shaffer and Anton Fig played old Chic hits to rapturous response, Rodgers and Edwards organized a reunion of the old band.In 1996 Rodgers was honored as the "Top Producer In the World" in Billboard Magazine, and was named a JT Super Producer.The recording was released as "Chic Live At The Budokkan".Chic continued to tour with new musicians.Thompson died of kidney cancer on November 12, 2003 at age 48.Rodgers and CHIC continue to perform to sold out venues worldwide.In addition to refining a relatively minimalist take on the disco sound, Chic helped to inspire other artists to forge their own sound."Good Times" was also used by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five on their hit "..On The Wheels Of Steel" which was used in the end sequence of the first Hip Hop movie "Wild Style" in 1982.Blondie's 1980 US number one hit "Rapture" was not only influenced by "Good Times" but a direct tribute to Chic, and lead singer Deborah Harry's 1981 debut solo album Koo Koo was in fact produced by Edwards and Rodgers.Queen got the inspiration for their hit single "Another One Bites the Dust" from Bernard Edwards' familiar bass guitar riff on "Good Times" after John Deacon met the band in The Power Station recording studio.Source: "Everybody Dance: Chic and the Politics of Disco")

Luther Vandross sound like an afterthought, which is only part of
the reason this is the quintessential late disco album.Apparently, the
European version of the LP contains the two hits from the previous
album; those guys have all the luck.Norma Jean Wright's pleasant voice doesn't have the personality to carry an LP, especially a lackluster ballad like "I Believe In You."The personnel is identical to contemporaneous Chic records, Gene Orloff's strings not excepted.The rest of
the album focuses on moody ballads ("Will You Cry"), and while it's
an interesting switch, putting the lyrics and vocalists front and
center turns out not to have been such a great idea ("Can't
Stand To Love You").We Are Family (Sister Sledge: 1979)
Rodgers and Edwards ventured into outside production working with this
previously unknown act.Chic style: "Somebody Loves Me," "Easier To
Love" and "One More Time" (indeed) have completely predictable
arrangements and forgettable melodies that can't carry the lightweight
lyrics.At least "Lost In Music" has interesting scary overtones,
and "Thinking Of You" sports prominent, well recorded congas.The musicians are Chic plus Robert Sabino, Andy Schwartz and
Raymond Jones on piano, Sammy
Figueroa on percussion, and the Chic Strings.Top 40 and was Chic's first release not
to go gold.Rounding out
the set is some straightforward disco ("26") and two unexceptional
ballads ("I Loved You More," "You Can't Do It Alone").Michelle Cobbs and Fonzi Thornton add
backing vocals.C'Est Chic higher for historical value
and because it's more representative of the band, but this album is just
about as solid, and more consistent."Got To Love Somebody" is absurdly dull and (of course) overlong, and "I'm A Good
Girl" and "You Fooled Around" are formulaic to a T.There are a couple of brilliant cuts,
though: "Reach Your Peak" has irresistable hooks, and the funky groove
of "Pretty Baby" is as ominous as disco ever got.Chic
fans, but don't pay through the nose.Again, the band is Chic plus Gene Orloff's strings, and a faceless horn section.Believer (1983)
Rodgers and Edwards were still in great demand as producers, but for
some reason they felt compelled to put together another Chic LP.The title track is representative of
the rest: an obvious melody and rhythm pounded out by blithely
programmed machines.It's refreshing to hear a dance record with almost no
synth on it.Thompson wasn't around for this
reunion, but he's not missed: the session drummers sound just like
him.Jimi Hendrix's "Stone Free," which also features Steve Winwood on
lead vocals and organ.Let's get the freak out of here. |
