Along with older brother Chris Robinson, Rich formed the band in 1984 (which was originally called Mr.Crowes Garden) while the two brothers were still attending high school (Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia).Over the years, Robinson has become one of the premier slide guitarists in rock.Often overshadowed by his brother and Crowes' front man Chris, Rich has been the steadying influence in the band and the source for almost all of its music. At first Rich relied heavily on the strength of the songs to make up for his inexperience at playing guitar.Soon, Young Rich (as his brother often referred to him in concert) was covering Duane Allman's slide solo from The Allman Brothers Band's "Dreams" demonstrating his emerging mastery of the guitar. In 1990, The Black Crowes released their debut album Shake Your Moneymaker, followed by the 1992 release of The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.Following several albums released throughout the 1990s the Black Crowes released Lions in 2001.Chris decided that he wanted to pursue a solo album.Rich formed a new outfit called Hookah Brown. The band (featuring John Hogg on vocals, Bill Dobrow on drums and Fionn O'Lochlan on bass) was an attempt to create a sound that was drastically different from The Black Crowes.Robinson handled most of the songwriting, with Hogg contributing lyric and melody ideas to some material. After their debut gig at Arlene's Grocery in New York City, the band entered Robinson's Globe Studio to record a few original tracks.Included on this demo were "Cut the World," "Know Me" and "Black Cloud," among several others. The gigs were well received and it appeared that the band was on the cusp of success, both commercially and critically. In April of 2003, however, it was announced that Hookah Brown would be going their separate ways and that Robinson would be continuing as a solo act.The guitarist later revealed that the expense of operating a full band on tour without the backing of a record label proved too much and forced the disbanding of Hookah Brown.Robinson continued to tour throughout the end of 2003 and well into 2004.Big Sugar) being the only fairly regular faces.Entitled Paper, the record featured many new songs in addition to some reworkings of material from the Hookah Brown period.During breaks from touring with The Black Crowes, Robinson found time to assemble another band, Circle Sound.Patti Smith's release Twelve, which was released in April 2007.Black Crowes reunited In January of 2005, Chris and Rich Robinson played an acoustic show together in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the first time since the Black Crowes went on hiatus in 2002 that the two brothers had played together on the same stage. The tour included seven nights at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York and when the band came for a four night run at the Tabernacle in their home town of Atlanta, GA, the bands original drummer, Steve Gorman returned to the band. While still on tour with Tom Petty they started playing clubs on their own, and treating their audiences to two set shows that were close to three hours long. The band also did two shows in Japan. After a handful of shows in the states in March the Black Crowes headed overseas to do three shows at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, England' and three shows at the Paridiso in Amsterdam,Holland.Chris and Rich spent the month of April doing 13 acoustic shows. The Brothers played new material during their tour for the first time since the Black Crowes had reunited as well as playing each others solo material together for the first time. From here the brothers joined back up with the Crowes and headed to Canada for the month of May with openers Matt Mays and El Torpedo. They headed back to the states for a handful of two set shows before heading out on a summer shed tour starting in June with the openers Robert Randolph and the Family Band and the Drive by Truckers. The played mostly one set shows although they did sneak in a few two set club dates during the summer. The band continued to play a mix of songs from all of their albums, cover songs and a few new songs. This tour ended at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado with an acoustic brother's show on August 12th.They were replaced by guitarist and record producer Paul Stacey who had played with Chris on his solo tour and keyboardist Rob Clores.During the winter and early spring of 2007 Rich pulled together some friends to do two Circle Sound shows in New York. Both he and Chris did a handful of solo shows. In July Chris and Rich appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and did an acoustic version of the song Wiser Time.At their August 3rd show at the Musikfest in Bethelem, PA, the band made another member change when keyboardist Rob Clores left the band and was replace by Adam MacDougall. This page was last modified 10:24, 20 December 2007.All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.See Copyrights for Rich Robinson. With the success of their album they went out on tour to support it.They played several dates supporting ZZ Top.During this tour Chris was criticized for talking to the audience about his opposition to corporate sponsorship. In the media, Robinson would openly discuss his use of marijuana. The Crowes played The Atlanta Pot Festival in 1992 which would ultimately label them as a "stoner band".The band itself became known as New Earth Mud and became known for playing remarkably inspired sets across the United States.New Earth Mud toured well into 2003, not only as a headliner but sharing the bill with such acts as Elvis Costello, Gov't Mule and The String Cheese Incident.During the later portion of the tour, the band introduced several new songs into their set and built up quite an anticipation for their second release. The end result was This Magnificent Distance, released in June of 2004.Crowes member Audley Freed on guitar and studio virtuoso George Reiff on bass. The band toured in support of This Magnificent Distance through the Summer of 2004, again gaining more critical and commercial attention for themselves.Robinson instead remained out of the public eye aside from three appearances with Phil Lesh and Friends at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco (December 2004).Flying high again In early 2005 it was announced that The Black Crowes would be reuniting for a run at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.Although initially not there for the reunion Steve Gorman did return to the band in early May.The Heartbreakers as well as headliners. In July 2007, during the Black Crowes Summer Tour, the live album Brothers of a Feather was released. The album was an intimate set of tracks culled from Chris and Rich Robinson's three night set at the Roxy, and featured Black Crowes classics (Horsehead, Cursed Diamond, Thorn In My Pride), solo material from both brothers (Someday Past the Sunset, Forgiven Song) covers from some of their favorite artists (Over the Hill, Roll Um Easy) and new Black Crowes material (Magic Rooster Blues, Cold Boy Smile).According to the band's official website, a new Black Crowes album is due out sometime in 2008.Marriage to Kate Hudson In December 2000, Chris Robinson married actress Kate Hudson, daughter of actress Goldie Hawn and stepdaughter of Kurt Russell. On August 14, 2006, after nearly six years of marriage, Hudson's publicist announced their separation. He is seeking joint custody of their son, Ryder Russell Robinson.Trivia Robinson made a cameo appearance (playing an angel) in the final episode of the popular sketch show The Kids in the Hall in 1994.This page was last modified 08:38, 4 January 2008.See Copyrights for details.Last year was the year of reckoning for the Black Crowes. One is Hookah Brown, his new band with former Moke member John Hogg. They may sound a wee bit like Rich's other band, but hey, what can you expect?Rich Robinson: It's the only band I've ever been in without one so it's different and it's good.I've never been in a band without Chris.I've pretty much been in a band with the same people for, like, 15 years, so it's really cool to just get out and play with different people and learn different things.Has starting a new band and constructing new songs brought you back to the early days and fresh feeling of starting it out with the Black Crowes?I've seen how that works and I sort of have a bird's eye view. Are there any specific mistakes or experiences that you've learned from your days with the Crowes that you've taken with you in being part of Hookah Brown? The great thing about the Crowes is that when we started we came in under the radar. No one gave two shits, it was just like they signed us as a favour. And there was no money involved. So we came in under the radar and then we sold so many records that we weren't under the radar, but no one really told us what kind of records to make. And so we were always able to make the records we wanted to make. The only problem came when people tried to pick our singles for us and all this bullshit, and it was always geared towards what sounded the most like "Hard To Handle."And they never used our strongest asset, which I thought was that we always changed. Our records grew leaps and bounds every time we made 'em.Playing together as a band that grew.Like, the most depressing time of music in music history! Is that part of the reason why the Crowes split last year?We stopped going because Chris really wanted to do his own thing. And Chris just wasn't into it.Your pairing with your brother is one of the most memorable and powerful in rock history. How would you describe or even compare the pairing you have now with Hookah's frontman John Hogg?Chris is a really strong personality. With him, it was like, I wrote the music, he wrote the lyrics and if I ever tried to write a melody or lyric he was like,"No."It would just be a fight, like "No!You're not going to let me write this so I'm not going to let you write that."It's similar because it's my sound.People will write what they're gonna write. It's funny because they said we were just a hippie band and they also said we sounded exactly like the Stones, then when we played with Jimmy we sounded exactly like Zeppelin. It's like, the Stones weren't a hippie band, yet we sound exactly like them.Zeppelin wasn't a hippie band and we sounded like them.Saosin: "It's Not Cool To Yell At Troops!"OnlineSeats offers premium unique Chris And Rich Robinson tickets.Chris And Rich Robinson tickets may be purchased online the best thing the founders have done for their band in recent memory. The Robinsons augment themselves only sparingly with other instruments in addition to their own acoustic and electric guitars.Rich reveals himself to be more than just a facile rhythm guitarist in the deft way he navigates the acoustic piece he wields much of the set.Given the disarray that befell the band earlier this year when Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch left the lineup, the unity evident for the duration of Live at the Roxy, suggests such an offering would set just the necessary tone.Be the first to add your comment!
