and in other tracks, the music soars with expressive power, evoking a maelstrom of compelling sounds harnessed with dynamic intent.Electronic percussions shudder and shimmer, sometimes providing guiding tempos, other times lending snickering punctuations to the harmonic flow.No matter what the style, however, Schnitzler achieves satisfying tuneage that is unpredictably rewarding.CONRAD SCHNITZLER: 00159 (privately produced CDR) Contact Schnitzler. While the eerie pieces might be considered ambient soundscapes if they did not exude Schnitzler's quirky predilection to startle the audience with the unexpected.Schnitzler has a habit of hiding structure in chaos, and only when the track has finished does the listener realize the subliminal pattern.Recorded in early 2001, this CDR features 59 minutes of "Dramatic Electronic Music".The electronics flow with bizarre organization, aligning characteristically contrary riffs and cycles to achieve eccentric coherency.Grinding whirrings mesh with twitching diodes to generate passages of taut anticipation. While Schnitzler's choice of sonic preference are sounds that echo with otherworldly disposition, this music features appearances by bassoons and other orchestral instruments, generated electronically and therefore displaying only vague semblance to their classical origins. This mutation of traditional sounds lends more than his normal degree of intriguing futurism to the tuneage.Quivering electronics ring out amid twitchy percussions that invariably resonate with a metallic timbre.Strange cycles emerge to spin with crystalline determination, generating passages that invigorate more than sedate the audience.Electronic drones tumble from the sky, undulating like luminous sheets of plastic in the night.Tappings function as quirky rhythms, flavoring the flow with their robotic bongo fury.Conrad Schnitzler was a founding member of both
Cluster and
Tangerine Dream.Kluster's Schwarz (Captain Trip, 2006) was Schnitzler's first solo album but technically the third Kluster album.Captain Trip, 2006), which contains two lengthy
electronic suites (Meditation and Krautrock)
in the vein of Tangerine Dreams' Electronic Meditation, but closer to
Morton Subotnick's avantgarde electronica than to "kosmische musik".Captain Trip, 2006), that increased the presence of the sequencer,
and, alas, by
a multitude of records that explored an unbound variety of techniques.Con (Paragon, 1978) is the album that downplayed the abrasive excesses
of his technique, and basically returned him to the realm of popular music.Schnitzler did not record anything for a few years, but, when he returned,
he took advantage of the new dynamics of "indie rock", and began flooding the
world with all sorts of albums.Despite the inevitable low quality of these albums, Convex (GS, 1982)
was actually one of the most daring, but the flood resumed with
Con 3.Marginal Talent, 1997),
plus live albums, rarities, reissues, etc.The 88 Game (2000),
5.Captain Trip, 2002) is a (very abstract) collaboration with
Roedelius.Ambient e nella Techno music.Son (GS, 1981), Conal (Uniton, 1981), Control (DYS, 1981), Grun (Block, 1981).As you probably already know, Conrad Schnitzler is one of the most
influential figures in electronic music. He was a member of Tangerine Dream
(before they went off a bit), was a founding member of Kluster (before they
became Cluster) and formed the insanely good Harmonia along with Michael
Rother of Neu!.Of course as he was working in these bands the German
musician was honing his skills and composing countless tapes of solo
electronic material, and this absolutely epic, lavish triple cd boxset compiles some
of this crucial work.Quite the opposite in fact, these compositions illustrate how influential
Schnitzler has been on current electronic music with moments sounding closer
to Autechre's work than I'm sure you'd imagine.Berlin being chased by mutated savages in clown
costumes.Whether you love Autechre, Aphex Twin
or the 12k back catalogue, Conrad Schnitzler is a part of electronic music
history that cannot be forgotten and this collection is simply an essential
part of that. |
