| The Dave Clark Five (abbreviated as DC5) were an English Beat group in the 1960s, and one of the few that were able to present something of a commercial threat to The Beatles, the dominant group of the period.Some early songs were also credited to Clark and Ron Ryan, who was the brother of early group member Mick Ryan.They had a series of memorable hits, including "Glad All Over" that in January 1964 knocked the Beatles out of the number one position on the UK Singles Chart.The Dave Clark Five placed 17 records in Billboard's Top 40 to go with 12 Top 40 United Kingdom hits between 1964 and 1967.Heavily promoted as having a "cleaner" image than the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five holds the distinction of having made 18 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, more than any other UK group.The song "Bits and Pieces" was sometimes banned from being played at their live concerts, as fans would jump up and down in time to the song's stomping beat, and promoters feared this would damage the dance hall floors.The DC5's efforts to embrace the prevailing trend of psychedelia were not successful.Dave Clark was also the manager of the band.Ironically, most session drummers would not want to be known as "the real Dave Clark", as Clark was not a skillful drummer.He was until December 2007 an inpatient at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, according to published reports in the United Kingdom.The Dave Clark Five made the list of nominees for the class of 2008, and on 13 December 2007, it was announced that the band would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2008.Dave Clark (born David Clark, 15 December 1939, in Tottenham, North London, England), was the drummer.The Dave Clark Five Return!External links

I'ts Here!He bought a set of drums and learned how to play them.Chris and Mick left and Dave Clark along with Mike Smith, Dennis Payton, Rick Huxley and Lenny Davidson formed The Dave Clark Five.The group played locally in Tottenham, a suburb just north of London.Their first release was "Mulberry Bush" (a rock version of the nursery rhyme) which made no impact, but their second, a cover of The Contours' "Do You Love Me" did make the lower reaches of the charts in the autumn of 1963.This was to make a major impact on the band, as they then decided to record their own material.This song has become one of the most recognizable Beat Era hits and still enjoys a major amount of air play today.Clark's loud stomping drum sound, and Mike Smith's powerful vocals.The Dave Clark Five took the U.British Beat Group) on the Ed Sullivan Show along with 6 sold out tours and 15 Top 20 hits in three years, established the DC5 as one of the best known British Bands.Six more records from the group were released in 1964 that reached the top fifteen in the U."Over and Over", which had been released earlier by Bobby Day as the flip side of his hit, "Rockin' Robin".The Beatles had a hit film with A Hard Day's Night and Dave Clark answered it with Having a Wild Weekend, a 1965 film that was to be the directorial debut of John Boorman (who would later direct a number of major motion pictures including Deliverance and Exorcist II).He made a very successful television production in the UK titled Hold On, It's The Dave Clark Five and bought the rights to the UK television series Ready Steady Go!Times were changing in the music business.Psychedelia was the rage in the late 60's, but the Dave Clark Five didn't get on that bandwagon.For a while, Dave Clark and Mike Smith teamed up in a new group called Dave Clark and Friends, along with Eric Ford, Alan Parker and Madeline Bell.When the group split, Clark attended drama school.Mike Smith continued in the music business, writing commercial jingles and producing other artists.Dennis Payton went in to the real estate business and continued to play music part time.Other videos compiled by Clark did nearly as well.In 1985, Clark's compilation of video tapes from the Ready Steady Go!Tragedy struck Smith on October 15th, 2003, when he suffered an accident at his home in Spain, which affected his spinal chord.His death came just weeks after it was announced that the Dave Clark Five had been nominated for induction to the 2007 US Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame.He went on to say "Denis was extremely brave and not afraid of death."He said, 'I know I won't be around, but it was an amazing part of my life that I am very proud of. |
