David Hykes is a Dharma student of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, who gave him the name Shenpen Yeshe, "the Primordial Wisdom that brings happiness to beings," and Tsoknyi Rinpoche.Harmonic sound waves are fundamental to many natural systems in the cosmos. They were part of the Big Bang and reverberate to this day; science calls them the Cosmic Microwave Background.Hykes was partly inspired by traditional world music of Tibet, Mongolia and Tuva, and was the first westerner to deeply explore these three traditions.Hykes has also composed and performed original music for the films Travellers and Magicians by incarnate Tibetan lama Dzongsar Khyentse; Dharma River, "Vajra Sky Over Tibet" and "Prajna Earth" by John Bush; as well as Dead Poets Society, Ghost, and Baraka, among many others.Discography (all titles available from www.All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.See Copyrights for details. We're the principal organization supporting the Magicians,' I listened to so much music. But I always came back to David's.From the moment I heard it, there was no doubt."Harmonics are to musical sound what the color spectrum is to light."David Hykes has opened a new dimension in music, bringing us the music of the spheres. As music, these wondrous sounds retain an extraordinary mystery, for they do not belong to man.Hykes's landmark collaborations since 1975 exploring sacred music, contemplative practice and healing sounds have included projects with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Gyuto Monks, the Gyume Monks, and many other practitioners and teachers."Resonance and Radiance: Sacred Music, Sacred Mind", brought together practitioners of traditional and contemporary sacred chant to explore the emerging relationships decades of retreats, experiences, research and intensive sharing and collaboration by David Hykes with The Harmonic Choir and other musicians. In a larger sense, "The Harmonic Choir," the living sound of this exact and exacting work, includes the thousands with whom the work has been shared since 1975, and the thousands of musicians, "sound healers" and others inspired indirectly by the harmonic kind of listening, reflection and contemplation which Tibetan masters call 'the Three Forms of Prajna (Wisdom),comprising a genuine Higher Education.Hykes was also inspired by the Western harmonic traditions, from medieval chant to Just Intonation pioneers Hermann von Helmholtz, Alain Danielou, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Tony Conrad, whom along with Steve Reich, Hykes reveres as Western inspirations. Those subtle waves of photonal warmth, the cosmic background radiation, still radiate across the sky in every direction, in waves as wide as 2 full moons.France or call +33 (0)9 52 56 74 is an inspired musician whose ground breaking and enlightening spiritual harmonies I have only begun to contemplate in recent years.Listening to his remarkable music helps me stop and meditate, hear silent echoes of emptiness, and feel closer to that Luminous Void from which all sounds arise."As a filmmaker, I am working on a television series that will explore the universality of music. So I came to Hykes work with an intellectual interest in the overtone series. But David Hykes has opened up a new musical world for me and changed my way of listening. His music embodies the universality of music.Hykes' subtly shifting harmonies seem to trace the ineffable architecture of the cosmos, and draw us into a journey that is both intensely personal and completely impersonal."Listening to the extraordinary music of David Hykes is like listening to the symphony of silence that lies at the heart of being.David Hykes offers us an inner journey into the depths of heart, the open sky of mind, and the power of universal Being.David Hykes and The Harmonic Choir perform at the inaugural concert in the rebuilt Winter Garden of The World Financial Center at Ground Zero here in New York City. You can now share this extraordinary moment of reconciliation in The Silent Ground offered in this collection. When I asked David to create a Harmonic Chant score for my film series THE YATRA TRILOGY I knew from this experience that it would take the viewer into a universal place deeply personal and accessible.Harmonic Chant is beyond music it is cosmic resonance, immediately recognizable.DHARMA RIVER, PRAJNA EARTH and VAJRA SKY are cinematic pilgrimages to the great spiritual sights of SE Asia and Tibet. They offer the sacred music of these legendary places along with local sounds. The Harmonic Chant score meshes seamlessly with the traditional music of these legendary venues as they are drawing from the same universal source.David Hykes' rare gifts as a singer and as a channel for sacred song are remarkably on display in HARMONIC MEDITATIONS.The shorter the resolution, the greater the musical talent of the doctor.""Redemption" is the word that comes to mind, were I to describe Davids underground work that afternoon.David Hykes takes the sounding of inner echoes to a new and thrilling level and we are fortunate to be swept along and included. But, I am a doctor and so get to prescribe this CD for you.How can it heal if it sounds so hollow? What do they listen for? They listen for the inaudible whether it be the word of God or the Reality of another spiritual quest.Alfred Tomatis, another true original in the world of sound therapies, taught me years ago.If he is accurate in claiming, "the ear builds, organizes and nourishes the nervous system," then I want those I love (and that includes you too, dear reader) to hear more Hykes! The Buddha taught that this understanding, if we were able e to attain it, would reveal a surprisingly simple truth: that bringing harmony to the soul also helps (at least a little) in bringing harmony to all sentient beings. To anyone who has fallen under the spell of David Hykess music in the past quarter century, these ideas may seem eerily familiar.Lets face it, by the time you have shuffled off this mortal coil, you will have heard an enormous amount of music. When you feel like youre hearing some kind of coded message, and its so compelling that you want to understand the language, and therefore the meaning, of this music. One of those times was hearing David Hykess early masterpiece Hearing Solar Winds.Like many Westerners, Id never come across the idea of singing overtones before. Not knowing what to listen for, Hykess music was easily missed. It was like listening to particle physics.Using techniques of overtone singing, some borrowed from the ancient traditions of Tibet and Central Asia, and some developed in the last two decades, Hykes has taken us on a search for a unified field theory of harmony. And if, as he suspects, there is a point at which musical harmony and spiritual harmony converge, our means of reaching that point is likely to be something fundamental and simple perhaps something as simple as 1, 2, 3.David Hykes has created an increasingly complex vocabulary of overtone singing techniques, which he calls Harmonic Chant, and a sophisticated approach to the possible ways in which harmony, rhythm, and the visual arts come together.Hykes writes elsewhere in these notes about his "harmonic" work in both senses of the word.Of course its not really about just producing sound. And Harmonic Meditations is clearly more than an exercise in vocal gymnastics.David Hykes just acknowledges that fact more than most.It was probably not a coincidence that the Winter Gardens vaulted marble and glass space is very much like a secular cathedral. And so, on November 20, 2002, David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir reconsecrated that space, and by extension the hallowed ground outside. How, Hykes asked in a recent conversation, does music help? While the environments that the music was created in differ, they are joined by the wonderment of hearing the human voice reverberating in the magical spaces that the harmonic journey delivers to us.Stepping down into the darkness, sheltered from the wind above it was as though we left behind the world and entered a secret universe. The Winter Garden was another matter altogether.Ground Zero shortly after 911 and walked by the Atrium at dusk. The restaurants are gone.So lean back, get comfortable, and be prepared to time travel in that unique Hykesian vehicle called Harmonic Chant. Not the David Hykes you're looking for?You may report errors and omissions on this page to the IMDb database managers. They will be something administered to others, it's certainly also something that can be done by and for yourself.David Hykes had this idea in mind when he formed the Harmonic Choir, which he has led for over twenty years, travelling and teaching his methods and always finding new people who are receptive to his work.Hykes is also responsible for organizing musical seminars and workshops while remaining deeply committed to his work, constantly learning and refining his craft.Gregorian chant recordings, LaMonte Young and Pran Nath concerts, and then, in 1973, in recordings of Mongolian, Tibetan and Tuvan chanting. For me working in a certain way with harmonics was and is work with something deeply part of not just musical sound, but life and the vibrational reality of the whole physical and metaphysical universe. The color spectrum of sound. The Axis Mundi, the thread from heaven to earth, the scale of vibrations from deepest Below to highest Above. In my music, the harmonic series is the DNA of the work.Matter) and spirit can meet and, as it were, interpenetrate, interact, harmonize, perhaps even fuse.Aurobindo, Gurdjieff and Krishnamurti, that a transformation given by the Above can take place within ourselves provided the very exact inner and outer conditions necessary for it have been respected. To truly "hear" and attune to, harmonize with, these conditions requires a subtle and supple attitude which are difficult to find.In other words, of course this Evolution or Transformation is possible for each of us, just as the Harmonic Chant is possible, but perhaps it is not possible, or only partially possible, for me as I am.Harmonic Chant has a lot to offer here, a tremendous amount, really.Other workers in this field such as David Hykes have related their music to the most essential to our growth, and we must learn to listen for them"; Hykes finds that serenity through his harmonic chanting and that of his Harmonic Choir, the "singing listeners".Hykes studied the timeless geometry of the harmonic series, relating harmony in music to ordered states within oneself and the universe. The harmonic chanting of David Hykes springs from the tradition of the Mongolian nomads and Tibetan monks who sing "prismatically", each singer projecting harmonic overtone melodies while maintaining a steady fundamental tone. They accomplish this by an extremely precise modulation of the abdominal muscles, chest and vocal apparatus.David Hykes and members of his choir can articulate from one to seven harmonics simultaneously, duplicating the precise mathematical order which underlies all sound phenomena.David Hykes has been refining his artistry for 20 years, focusing his work at the International Center for Harmonic Studies in France.Hykes has toured extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. The music of David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir is a dichotomy; mystical while mathematical, meditative while intellectual. In all its complexities, it is beautiful music that flows over us and into us, freeing the soul to reach new heights of peace and understanding. They are the voices of David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir. In Current Circulation, David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir expand beyond the scope of the traditional tantric Tibetan Buddhist chant, in which the singer holds one steady note and one unmoving harmonic. They also expand beyond the traditional Mongolian Hoomi singing, in which the singer projects soaring harmonic melodies from the overtone series of the steady fundamental. In Current Circulation, the singers create new melodies and chords by simultaneously moving both the harmonic and fundamental notes, sometimes in converging directions, or by holding the high harmonic while varying the fundamental. This kind of harmonic chanting is very demanding for the singers, and can be for the listener as well. The vibrations both define the space and inhabit it, shimmering through the air in a timeless dimension.Click on a tag to find related items, discussions, and people."Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.Your vote will be counted and will appear
