| Contemporary Christian music genre during the 1990s.The band, originally named DC Talk and later stylized as dc talk, was formed in the late 1980s in Lynchburg, Virginia by Toby McKeehan, Kevin Max Smith, and Michael Tait.Beginning Stages (1988)
1.Toby McKeehan (tobyMac) started writing Christian hip hop under the moniker Caucatalk. While attending Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, McKeehan met Michael Tait, and the two formed DC Talk and the One Way Crew in 1989.When DC Talks, from their second release Nu Thang support this. However, the name was initially chosen because McKeehan was from the Washington D.Christian hip hop arena. They gained a little crossover success when the "Heavenbound" music video received airplay on the BET network.Nu Thang
Their second release, Nu Thang, and a Christmas album titled Yo, Ho, Ho!By 1991, the trio were opening for Michael W.Smith and were awarded a Dove Award.Billboard CCM sales charts for 34 weeks. The success of the album is attributed to the group moving away from a strictly rap sound to a blend of hip hop and pop.The album also prompted the filming of a movie with the same name.Jesus Freak
The group's fourth album, Jesus Freak, was released in 1995, and it achieved the highest first week sales of any Christian release in history. The music was much more similar to a fusion of the musical stylings of Nirvana, and U2, than M.United States, Canada and Europe.Jesus Freak also marked a milestone in the group's career as they signed a deal with Virgin Records in 1996 to distribute their music to the mainstream market. The group has stated in The Supernatural Experience video that this album was different; it was a collaborative effort of all three members. The songs "Consume Me" and "My Friend (So Long)" received their fair share of radio play on Modern Rock, Contemporary Christian, and Alternative outlets.Footage from the tour was combined with interviews and released as The Supernatural Experience video. In 2000, dc Talk hosted a show titled "Intermission: A Decade of dc Talk".Intermission was then released. Two new songs, Chance and Sugar Coat It, were recorded for the album.Solo: Special Edition EP.In September 2002, dc Talk reunited to record and release a single about the September 11, 2001 attacks, entitled "Let's Roll."In 2004, dc Talk reunited for a remix of tobyMac's "Atmosphere" as the final track of the Welcome to Diverse City album. In September 2005, dc Talk briefly reunited during a concert in Washington state. They played the songs, "In the Light" and "Jesus Freak."This album, which was released in June 2006, features songs from such Gotee Records artists as Relient K, Sarah Kelly, House of Heroes, Verbs, Liquid, and Family Force 5.It also features a reunion of the Gotee Brothers. In August 2006, an album titled The Early Years was released. He wrote on his official website's message board, "DC Talk is something of the past.In order for DC Talk to be anything of the future, it will be up to each individual member to come together to create something that is lasting and substantial. There is an audience out there interested in seeing DC Talk back together as a group and as an entertaining and creative force, but I feel that the spirit of the thing is dead.God many times over for allowing me to be a part of something that was so far reaching and helped so many people, but to be honest, just doing a show to do a show is not interesting to me.In a recent concert, Michael Tait denied rumours of dc Talk's coming back, saying that he was focusing now on his band, Tait.Despite the lack of a recent group CD, Christian radio stations continue to play the band's music heavily. As the three friends find success separately, millions of fans across the world hopefully wait for dc Talk to reunite. It has been mentioned, as of 2007, by certain members of DC Talk management that there may be some type of reunion (whether album, tour, or both, is not certain) in the fall of 2008.This could be an anniversary reunion, as the first album was released in 1989.They did reunite for the song, "The Cross," on Kevin Max's album, The Blood.Collaborations
In 1991, they collaborated with Carman on his Addicted to Jesus record.Talk sang a cover version of the Larry Norman original, "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" on the album One Way: The Songs Of Larry Norman which was released by Forefront in 1995.They also sang a Rich Mullins song on Michael W.Smith's "Tribute to Rich Mullins" also featuring other Christian artists such as Jars of Clay and Amy Grant.Toby McKeehan assumed the stage name of tobyMac.His first solo album was Momentum. It was released in 2001 and included the hits, "J Train," "Somebody's Watching Me," "Irene," "Extreme Days," "Get this Party Started," and "Love is in the House."Tait also featured in the Rock Opera !The production is a modern retelling of Jesus' life, as if he were born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.Kevin Max has released five albums since the group's hiatus. The Imposter was released in 2005 by Northern Records.Holy Night, a Christmas album, was also released in 2005 by Northern Records. It featured covers of several well known gospel songs, both classic and contemporary, as well the original song One Way, One Blood. The Blood featured collaborations with several other artists, including dc Talk, Chris Sligh, Amy Grant, and others.Beliefs
The group is notable for its stances against racism (especially in "Colored People", second track of Jesus Freak), as well as the uncompromised Christian message in its music."We're very open about our Christian faith," says McKeehan, "but when we make our records we want to create a musical experience that anyone can immerse themselves in."But still, he says, "one of our goals is to encourage listeners to question themselves and to seek out truth."Other activities
Apart from music, the members of dc Talk have involved themselves in other activities.Jesus Freaks and Jesus Freaks II in collaboration with The Voice of the Martyrs. In 2004, Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait reunited to write a book called "Under God".Featured in the book are stories about Rosa Parks, Emmett Till, and Martin Luther King, Jr..September of 1997 when dc Talk participated in the "Racial Reconciliation Rally" in Little Rock, Ark.The rally was part of a weeklong emphasis on racial reconciliation. This page was last modified 00:59, 12 January 2008.Do you typically enjoy solo side projects from your favorite band?Yes, it's close to enough to the band in artistry.CTI Celebrates 50 Years!Lewis and Clarks, the three members of dc talk have spent more than a decade exploring uncharted territory and expanding our notions of the world.Their energetic concerts have continually broken new ground for rock performance and theatrics.Jesus's message to millions of young people who are trying to make their way in our turbulent times has continued to amaze Christian critics. And contrary to recurring rumors, it isn't breaking up.Rather, Toby, Michael and Kevin are taking a moment to stop, look back, and celebrate the mysteries of both God and the music biz before heading out on their next exciting venture into uncharted territory.Lynchburg, Virginia's Liberty University. It was during his time at Liberty that Toby met fellow dc Talk members Michael Tait and Kevin Max.Ten years and six albums later, just as dc Talk has evolved musically, Toby's own life and career have become quite diversified. While he records and tours extensively with dc Talk, Toby also focuses much of his time and energy developing and producing other artists on his own record label, Gotee Records.Since the label's inception in 1994, Gotee's roster has grown to include such acts as Out of Eden, Grits, Jennifer Knapp, Sonicflood, The Katinas, and others.Toby and Christian music veteran Bill Gaither. In 1997, Toby joined his manager Dan Pitts and Gotee President Joey Elwood in the formation of the E.Talk's platform because the topic of reconciliation is one that is close to the hearts of Toby, Michael and Kevin. On a personal note, Toby and his wife of four years, Amanda, became proud parents in 1998.God, Toby's family is the most important element in his life, and he admits that it has changed him only for the better."The impact Amanda and Truett have made on me has been great," he shares. He watched his sisters sing in church throughout his childhood, but Michael's involvement in music didn't come until later in high school, and then in college at Liberty University, where he met fellow dc Talk members Toby McKeehan and Kevin Max.Talk has now recorded a total of six albums."My Will" for the Exodus album; and most recently, producing Forefront artist Pete Stewart's solo album.Even in his hometown of Nashville, you'll often find him on the back of his Harley Davidson motorcycle riding with friends.Michael has always been very close to his father and credits him for much of his own outlook on life. His dad grew up an African American in Alabama, and encountered different forms of racism on a regular basis."My dad was just a lover of people and of life," Michael says. That's how I know God is in my life, because he has given that passion to me."Kevin Max
Kevin Max was raised just outside of suburban Grand Rapids, Michigan, where music was a big part of his childhood. He began singing when he was only four years old."I've always been a singer for as long as I can remember."Kevin spent a lot of time singing with music groups on campus at Liberty University, where he eventually met band mates Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait, and formed dc Talk. When he isn't recording or on the road with dc Talk, Kevin is perfecting his art of writing poetry, a hobby he began in high school and has brought to fruition over the last several years. Some of Kevin's best poems have been published in a book entitled At the Foot of Heaven, and he has just completed a new poetry book to be released soon.Try an Issue of Today's ChristianFree! No credit card required.Minutes() * 60 + newCurrentTime.Hours() * 3600 + currentTime.See all 41 customer reviews...Ships from and sold by Amazon.Want it delivered Friday, January 18?Day Shipping at checkout.Amazon MP3 Downloads store.Of("To view this content") !Track states defined in AlbumSampler. No Credit Card Required.Buy the sheet music for Dc talk at Sheet Music Plus.Add a iframe that allows us to ping the server when this element becomes visible

telling them I sought to write about the group for The Christian Conscience Magazine.Who is the Group DC Talk?It was the first time a rock group
or rock song had been honored in either catagory. There are a lot of kids who come to see us
on the road.David Bowie, The Police, U2.Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? The evening of May 16, 1996 my wife, Kathy, and I went to the Rapid City
Civic Center to see for ourselves why DC Talk is so popular. We knew the music would be loud, but not the
earsplitting level we experienced that evening. We both noticed a surprisingly large number of young children at
the concert ranging in age from approximately 5 years to preteen.Suddenly a large number from the audience left
their seats and rushed forward to be near the stage. At about the same time the band
played the first bass beat and this crowd began to jump up and down to the music. An extremely loud and incessant heavy bass beat was the predominant
trademark for both bands for the entire evening. The crowd cheered wildly and went bananas,
obviously recognizing the secular artist who wrote the song.Christians behave like this? After some 45 minutes Audio Adrenaline finished their session.Did they have books sharing their testimony? The lights dimmed, the heavy bass
started and the crowd was jumping again.DC Talk also added a video screen behind
them and as they played various pictures were shown with some songs. Then it switched to that
of flying into a lightning storm which really was weird, a spot on the cloud would light
up and the bolt of lightning followed, all very fast and sometimes several at once.Just the name of the song I believe gave it more than a New Age theme, whether the band
knows that or not!Jesus is Just Alright With Me,
the crowd got louder and more excited.Christian aspect had nothing to do with it.Two of the DC Talk band members jumped off stage into
the crowd and the third band member jumped off sound equipment that sat on the stage which
made his jump higher.Appearing to be about five feet above the raised hands of the crowd
from where we were sitting.Jesus Christ, to which the crowd roared loudly once again.Through the DC Talk session which ran about one hour and forty
minutes, the band members spoke of God in general terms only.God who forgives us when we
stumble, which led into one song I could half way understand.DC Talk also quoted
from a Bible translation I am unfamiliar with.He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in
darkness even until now.He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is
none occasion of stumbling in him.But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and
walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded
his eyes.During a break in the middle of the concert, the band members took time
to share with the audience. That should have been the perfect time to give a salvation
message, knowing the crowd would stick around for the music following.Unfortunately, the
opportunity was completely missed. It was truly heartbreaking to see so many left hanging
when there was opportunity to plant seeds of salvation. How are they going to know?We believe DC Talk and their music are prime examples of
compromising these verses in the Christian realm. We follow the person of Jesus Christ.Does this kind of music reflect the new or the old?DC Talk was
right, people let you down.Bodysurfing, Moshing and Headbanging for Jesus? No
one we talked to has ever heard of this behavior in the name of Christianity. As to the bodysurfing, well the band participates! What about the riotous atmosphere? Why do Christians want to subject their eardrums
to abuse? Why is it necessary to promote this kind of behavior, much less be a part of it?Now all I have to do is get my hearing back.We were saddened more by watching these young kids
than anything else.Has God changed, or have we?It comes down to what does the Bible say?Do musical forms reflect beliefs?Where does the Christian set their standards? Why would I want to enslave myself to
this worldly lifestyle again?Do we need to do this to be accepted? The Rock and Roll culture is a subculture, on the fringe of our society. Is this kind of music Christian? No, I do not believe it is.Are the band members
Christians?Perhaps, it is hard to tell if you go by the music and the words, only God
knows the heart.Because the lyrics keep them from sinking.God tells us,
And show ourselves worthy unto Him.He gave us
Just so the world will accept you in.Links Exposing Christian Rock's True Nature:
