4.Sherinian followed the Alice Cooper tours by playing keyboards in support of the 1992 KISS Revenge tour.Sherinian reunited with Dream Theater during a 2004 concert, which was recorded and released on When Dream and Day Reunite (2004).Sherinian's first solo project, Planet X (1999), recorded with Australian drummer Virgil Donati, led to the formation of the group of the same name (Planet X); they recruited guitar player Tony MacAlpine for the new project.Sherinian stated, "I have always been a fan of jazz fusion, but from the perspective of a rock player crossing over to jazz, not vice versa.Sherinian extended further into the fusion realm by collaborating with guitarist Allan Holdsworth and Jerry Goodman (formerly of the Mahavishnu Orchestra) on Mythology (2004).In addition to another appearance by Phillips, other musicians appearing on this recording were Zakk Wylde, John Sykes, Steve Stevens, and Tony Franklin.Other influences include guitarists Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, and Eddie Van Halen.Sherinian was presented the G2 Modular synth serial number 001 by Clavia representative Bengt Lilja in January 2004.Derek continues to use the Trinity's successors, the Korg Triton and Korg Triton Extreme both in the studio and live.However, he's also describes the sound of lesser digital emulations as "the sound of a puckered..."Sherinian currently uses the following gear: Korg Triton Extreme, Clavia Nord Lead 3, Clavia Nord G2X Modular, and Yamaha C9 Conservatory Series Grand Piano.With other musicians

hbx.Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian.Kiss, Alice Cooper and Billy Idol.Evidently, people have been saying yes to Sherinian.Wylde instead of Di Meola.Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, Simon Phillips and Tony Franklin, but I like to bring in new people to spice things up.Whenever Sherinian wants a crushing heavy metal groove, he knows he can always count on Zakk Wylde to deliver the goods.Wembley Arena with Alice Cooper.Ozzy gig, and then, in the early Nineties, Zakk and I often ran into each other in Los Angeles.Zakk to interpret his own parts because he comes up with great ideas.Ozzy influenced, but ultimately it was Yngwie who played the intro rhythm.Yngwie will go down in history with people like Hendrix, Bach, Paganini and Beethoven.He listens to a track once and lays his solo in just one take.Most have to work at it, but Yngwie is a natural.Again, Zakk laid his tracks down first.Miami to complete the recording.When Yngwie does long notes or bends, I always spike the delays a bit and then roll them off when he starts burning.You develop a language comprised of scales, keys and modes.Once you know where things go, you just burn it up.Basically, you spend all these years figuring things out; then you just forget about it and let loose.Music should be all about having fun, not about making tons of money or getting laid.Yngwie was Di Meola influenced and it would be exciting to have the two of them on the same track.Working with Di Meola in particular, says Sherinian, was immensely gratifying.It sounded so good it spun my head around!Somehow, he can get the fluid, legato phrasing of a sax with his guitar.Derek got both of them to play on his albums.Growing up as a guitar player it was very inspirational to be exposed to these two different styles of guitar playing.Unfortunately, you need to use some distortion to achieve that on guitar.Jordan was more compatible for Dream Theater.When we were making Falling Into Infinity with Dream Theater, there were times when John would take a whole day to record just one guitar solo.Keyboardists, in general, sound so wimpy.Actually, Sherinian harbored thoughts of playing guitar during his formative years as a keyboardist.It was all about Eddie Van Halen for the next few years until Blizzard of Ozz with Randy Rhoads in 1981.Berklee College of Music.Al Pitrelli, who would go on to play with me in Alice Cooper, and drummer William Calhoun, who later played in Living Colour.He comes in, takes care of business, and plays with a lot of feel.September, when he played with Eddie Van Halen.The day before the gig after soundcheck Eddie gave me a private tour of his 5150 studio.CDs and told him it would be a dream to play with him again.Now I just have to convince him to play on my next solo album. |
