| New Message from Dionne.New Message from Dionne.African American singer, actress, activist, United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization, former United States Ambassador of Health, and humanitarian.Billboard Pop Singles Charts.Early years
Dionne Warwick was born to parents Mancel Warrick, who began his career as a pullman porter, chef, a gospel record promoter for Chess Records and later a Certified Public Accountant and Lee Drinkard Warrick, manager of a renowned family gospel group and RCA recording artists The Drinkard Singers in East Orange, New Jersey. She performed her first gospel solo at the age of six and frequently joined The Drinkard Singers.Other family members include Dionne's brother, Mancel Warrick, Jr.The Drinkard Singers and were carried on local television stations in New Jersey and New York City.Dionne graduated from East Orange High School in 1959 and was awarded a Scholarship in Music Education to the Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut (a school from which she earned her Doctorate of Music Education in the 1980s).Their first performance together was at the world famous Apollo Theatre, where they won the weekly amateur contest.Various other singers joined The Gospelaires from time to time, including Judy Clay (adopted by Lee and Mancel Warrick), Cissy Houston, and Doris Troy (who had a hit with 1963's "Just One Look" featuring backing vocals from the Gospelaires). The backstage encounter led to the group being asked to sing background sessions at recording studios in New York.Soon, the group was in demand in New York music circles for their backgound work for such artists as The Drifters, Ben E.King, Chuck Jackson, Dinah Washington, Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks, and Solomon Burke among many others.Biography that after school, they would catch a bus from East Orange to the Port Authority Terminal, and then subway to recording studios in Manhattan, perform their background gigs and be back at home in East Orange in time to do their school homework. The background vocal work would continue while Dionne pursued her studies at Hartt. While performing background on The Drifters' recording of "Mexican Divorce", Dionne's voice and star presence were noticed by the song's composer Burt Bacharach, a Brill Building songwriter who was writing songs with many other songwriters including Hal David. What emotion I could get away with!"And what complexity, compared with the usual run of pop songs.During the session, Bacharach asked Dionne if she would be interested in recording demonstration recordings of his compositions to be used to pitch the tunes to record labels.Dionne was signed to Scepter Records in 1962 by Greenberg along with Bacharach and David as producers. The demo version of "It's Love That Really Counts", along with her original demo of "Make It Easy on Yourself", would surface on Dionne's 1963 debut album for Scepter Presenting Dionne Warwick.Biography of Dionne Warwick) supplied by Warwick herself when she snapped the phrase at producers Burt Bacharach and Hal David in anger.Warrick's name was misspelled on the single's label, and she began using the new spelling (i.Rhapsodized Jean Monteaux in Arts: "The play of this voice makes you think sometimes of an eel, of a storm, of a cradle, a knot of seaweed, a dagger. It is not a voice so much as an organ. You could write fugues for Warwick's voice."USA and also an international hit.Warwick even met Cilla Black while on tour in the UK."You're My World" would be my next single in the States. There was no imagination in her recording."Dionne Warwick in Valley of the Dolls, released in 1968.Playboy Magazine's influential Music Poll of 1970 named her the Top Female Vocalist. In a May 21, 1965, Time Magazine cover article entitled 'The Sound of the Sixties," Dionne Warwick's sound was described as follows: "Swinging World.Luc Godard, discuss "the brio and elegance" of Dionne Warwick's singing style as a "pleasurable but complex" event to be "experienced without condescension."In chic circles, anyone damning rock 'n' roll is labeled not only square but uncultured. For inspirational purposes, such hip artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers and Andy Warhol occasionally paint while listening to rock 'n' roll music.Explains Warhol: "It makes me mindless, and I paint better."The mid 1960s to early 1970s became an even more successful time period for Warwick, who saw a string of Gold selling albums and Top 20 and Top 10 hit singles. The January 1967 LP Here Where There Is Love was her first RIAA certified Gold Album and featured "Alfie", (ironically a Warwick cover of a Cilla Black hit) and two 1966 hits "Trains and Boats and Planes", and "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself"."Alfie" had become a radio hit when disc jockeys across the nation began to play the album cut early in 1967.Bacharach had been contracted to produce "Alfie" for the Michael Caine film of the same name and wanted Dionne Warwick to sing the tune but the British producers wanted a British subject to cut the tune.Warwick, at first, balked at recording the tune and asked Bacharach "How many more versions of Alfie do you need?"Chart and the AC Charts.Today, "Alfie" is considered a signature song for Warwick.Later that same year, Warwick earned her first RIAA Gold Single for US sales of over one million units for the single "I Say a Little Prayer" (from her album The Windows of the World). It was not written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, it was the "B" side of her "I Say a Little Prayer" single, and it was a song that she almost didn't record. The song was to be given to Judy Garland who had been fired from the film. The film soundtrack LP, sans Warwick vocals failed to impress the public, while Dionne Warwick in Valley of the Dolls earned an RIAA Gold certification.Do You Know the Way to San Jose?"Do You Know the Way to San Jose" also scored internationally and became a Top 10 hit in several countries including the UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Japan and Mexico.David penned single was March 1971's "Who Gets the Guy" and her final "official" Scepter single release was "He's Moving On" backed with "Amanda" both from the soundtrack of the motion picture adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's "The Love Machine".Other Scepter LPs certified RIAA Gold include Dionne Warwick's Golden Hits Part 1 released in 1967 and The Dionne Warwick Story: A Decade of Gold released in 1971.Dionne Warwick became the first Scepter artist to request RIAA audits of her recordings in 1967 with the release of "I Say A Little Prayer".On Wednesday, September 17, 1969, CBS Television aired Dionne Warwick's first television special entitled "The Dionne Warwick Chevy Special."Biography of Burt Bacharach, with the release of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" in 1963.In 1971, Dionne Warwick left the family atmosphere of Scepter Records for Warner Brothers Records for what was at the time the most lucrative recording contract ever given a female vocalist according to Variety.David sued Scepter Records for an accurate accounting of royalties due the team from Warwick and labelmate B.The breakup left Dionne devoid of their services as her producers and songwriters.Dionne was contracually obligated to fulfill her contract with Warners without Bacharach and David and she would team with a variety of producers during her tenure with the label.Warwick, for years an aficionado of psychic phonomena, was advised by famed astrologist Linda Goodman in 1971 to add a small "e" to her last name, making Warwick "WARWICKe" for good luck and to recognize her married name and her spouse, actor and drummer William " Bill" Elliott. The extra "e", according to Dionne "was the worst thing I could have done in retrospect, and in 1975 I finally got rid of that damn "e" and became "Dionne Warwick" again."David had provided, Warwick's career slowed in the 1970s.There were no big hits until 1974's "Then Came You", recorded as a duet with the Spinners and produced by Thom Bell. She didn't like it much, but I knew we had something. So we ripped a dollar in two, signed each half and exchanged them.If it doesn't go number one, I'll send you my half. When it took off, Dionne sent hers back. Then Came You, produced by Jerry Ragavoy; Track of the Cat, produced by Thom Bell; and Love at First Sight, produced by Steve Barri and Michael Omartian.Warners expired in 1977, and with that, Warwick ended her stay at the label. The 80s: Move to Arista
With the move to Arista Records and the release of "I'll Never Love This Way Again" (a tune written by Richard Kerr and Will Jennings and first recorded by Cheryl Ladd in 1978) in 1979, Dionne was again enjoying top success on the charts. The song was produced by Barry Manilow. The accompanying album Dionne (1979 Album) (not to be confused with the Warner Bros.Dionne's followup was another huge hit."Deja Vu" was written by Isaac Hayes and Adrienne Anderson.Internationally, the tune was also a smash in continential Europe, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Canada, and Asia. The title track was taken from the album of the same name which sold over 3 million internationally and earned Dionne an RIAA USA gold record award for the album.Dionne stated to Wesley Hyatt in his The Billboard Book of Number One Adult Contemporary Hits that she was not fond of "Heartbreaker" but recorded the tune because she trusted The Bee Gees' judgment that it would be a hit.The project come about when Clive Davis was attending his aunt's wedding in Florida and spoke with Barry Gibb.In 1983, Dionne released another notable album titled How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye which was produced by Luther Vandross.Their collaboration had been a lifelong dream of Vandross, who had maintained that he wanted to work with Warwick, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross.In 1985, Warwick recorded the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) benefit single "That's What Friends Are For" alongside Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. The single, credited to "Dionne and Friends" raised over three million dollars for that cause."You have to be granite not to want to help people with AIDS, because the devastation that it causes is so painful to see. With this single, Warwick also released her second most successful album of the decade, titled Friends. This song, another written by Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, was featured in Warwick's album Reservations for Two.The album's title song, a duet with Kashif, was also a moderate hit.Warwick's career slowed in the 1990s.During this period, Warwick hosted infomercials for the Psychic Friends Network which featured psychic Linda Georgian. The 900 number psychic service was active from 1991 to 1998.Warwick's longtime friend and tour manager Henry Carr acknowledged in a 2002 Biography Channel interview that "when Dionne was going through an airport and a child recognized her as 'that psychic lady on TV' Dionne was crushed and said she had worked too hard as an entertainer to become known as "the psychic lady".Warwick's most publicized album during this period was 1993's "Friends Can Be Lovers", which was produced in part by Ian Devaney and Lisa Stansfield.Featured on the album was "Sunny Weather Lover", which was the first song that Burt Bacharach and Hal David had written together in many years.Entertainment program "Day One", alleged financial improprieties by the Warwick Foundation, founded in 1989 to benefit AIDS patients, particularly Dionne Warwick's charity concert performances organized to benefit the organization.ABC maintained the report to be factually correct but the item has not been repeated since the original air date.In 2004, Dionne Warwick's first Christmas album was released. In 2005, Dionne Warwick was honored by Oprah Winfrey at her Legends Ball. Her first release for the label was My Friends and Me, a duets album containing reworkings of her old hits, very similar in fashion to her 1998 CD "Dionne Sings Dionne" .Dionne Warwick's new gospel album, "Why We Sing", will be released on January 28, 2008.In 1975, Warwick and Elliott divorced again.Dionne stated in an interview in "Don't Make Me Over: Dionne Warwick" a 2002 Biography Channel interview "I was the breadwinner. The male ego is a fragile thing. All my life, the only man who ever took care of me financially was my father.Sacha Distel, actor Phillip Michael Thomas("Miami Vice"), Seagram heir and CEO Edgar Bronfman, Jr.Luther Vandross' "Here and Now" among others) and a former Los Angeles police officer.Whitney Houston duet "Love Will Find A Way" featured on her album Friends Can Be Lovers.Since 2002, David has toured with and performed duets with his famous mother periodically. In 2002, Dionne Warwick was arrested at the Miami International Airport after baggage inspectors found a small silver case containing 11 marijuana cigarettes in her carry on luggage. She was originally charged with misdemeanor possession but the charges were dropped after Warwick entered into a plea deal and agreed to perform a series of public service announcements regarding illegal drugs.Dionne Warwick made the Top 250 Delinquent Taxpayers List published in October 2007."I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" in 1967 and "She Didn't Know (She Kept On Talking)" in 1970.Warwick's aunt is gospel singer Cissy Houston, and one of Warwick's cousins is Whitney Houston.Awards and honors

"Wishing And Hoping," became a huge hit when Dusty Springfield covered
it.David compositions earlier recorded by others:
"It's Love That Really Counts" (Shirelles), "The Love Of A Boy" (the
unheralded Timi Yuro), "Make It Easy On Yourself" (Jerry Butler).Cry Alone"), with only the melodies, some of the lyrics, and Warwick
taking it out of the realm of the ordinary. Thanks to the stinginess of
Scepter Records, the five best tracks of the twelve here were recycled
on later albums, and in addition Dionne rerecorded "Make It Easy," so
despite its historical value you probably shouldn't pay too much for
this one.Anyone Who Had A Heart (1964)
The quality of the recording and complexity of the arrangements (this
time strings are featured on most tracks) takes a big leap forward here."Shall I Tell Her," which Bacharach didn't even
write (it was by Atlantic stalwarts Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman) gets a
breathless delivery that brings out the drama in the lyric.Three tracks were reused from the previous record: "Don't Make Me Over,"
"I Cry Alone" and "This Empty Place.""You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart).""Only The Strong, Only The Brave."But again,
the arrangements are creative ("How Many Days Of Sadness"), the melodies
are always worth hearing ("Don't Say I Didn't Tell You So").Cole Porter's "I Love Paris" and "Se Si Bon."She carries it all off with her trademark elegance, and the pristine sound quality (surprising for
a 1966 live release) doesn't hurt.Ray Charles's "What'd I Say" is all the more impressive.Warwick's typical live show during her prime you'll have to track down The Dionne Warwicke Story."Message To
Michael" was relegated to a greatest hits package, and the title track (from the What's New Pussycat? In fact, you may want to have a respirator on
hand."Are You There (With Another Girl)?"And "I Never Knew What You Were Up To," a lovely,
sinuous shuffle. Here I Am more than the hits
here.That said, it's a fine introduction to Warwick's expressive
interpretations of Bacharach's melodies and arrangements, with perhaps
David's best lyrics ever.On Stage And In The Movies (1967)
As Bacharach and David's music became increasingly complex, the Broadway
covers were sounding more and more out of place."Something Wonderful" is left
uncluttered.Warwick shows off her range on a dramatic reading of the
Gershwins' "Summertime."There's some
more Bacharach composing and arranging magic ("Another Night"), but also
some insubstantial efforts ("Walk Little Dolly") and a fair number of
covers: Warwick sings the hell out of Andre and Dory Previn's "You're
Gonna Hear From Me," but her broad, corny take on Bert Kaempfert's
ancient "Love" is unforgivable. Not surprisingly, this
was her best charting album ever, and it's very solid: besides the hits,
Bacharach is in top form ("Let Me Be Lonely," "As Long As There's An
Apple Tree") and Jimmy Webb contributes "Up, Up and Away."Not as surefire as a
couple of the earlier albums, but an easy recommendation.Bacharach and David had no evident
involvement.Aretha Franklin ("Do
Right Woman, Do Right Man," "The
Weight," "You're All I Need To Get By"),
making comparisons inevitable, and on this material Warwick's
sophistication doesn't match up to Aretha's raw emotive power.David (who were about
to split up) sound out of gas.David's lyrics are
interestingly introspective, though sometimes uncharacteristically
labored ("They Don't Give Medals To Yesterday's Heroes"), but
Bacharach's music doesn't rise to the occasion: only "The Green Grass
Starts To Grow" has the dramatic impact we expect from the team.McCartney's "Yesterday" by 1971,
but Warwick doesn't even try, and tunes like Paul Williams' "We've Only
Just Begun" didn't have anything new in them to begin with. The Dionne Warwicke Story: A Decade Of Gold (rec."For
Once In My Life" and a horrific "Impersonation Medley" where Warwick mocks Diana Ross,
Pearl Bailey, and god knows who else. The full orchestra is servicable, though they lose some of the nuances of Bacharach's original arrangements. To Be Young Gifted And Black"),
which presumably Scepter wanted to keep under wraps lest she aliena
her supper club audience.Reach Out And Touch Somebody's
Hand."The record is low on originality, with a rerecording of "Close To You"
that didn't chart, and Warwick's version of "One Less Bell To Answer"
(originally a hit for the Fifth Dimension).Elton John) doesn't add any
interest, leaving it up to Warwick to try to wring emotion out of the
minimal melody."Be Aware," "I Just Have To Breathe," and "The Balance Of
Nature" are a bit California cool, but the compositions and arrangements
are so intricate (not to mention David's cosmic lyrics) you won't mind.Holland, right after they
folded their independent labels and went back to major label work.Warwick would have between 1970 and 1979.The last "Warwicke" record.Strings and horns are
by Bell's MFSB conglomerate, and the rhythm section features former
Motowners Bob Babbit and Andrew Smith, plus Bell on keys and Tony Bell
on guitar.It
seems they were trying to make AM radio hits, but didn't have the
melodies for it (aside from the moving "Since You Stayed Here"), and the
record didn't crack the charts. The supporting cast
includes well known sessioneers Scott
Edwards, Victor Feldman, Ed
Greene, Ray Parker Jr.Will Jennings and Richard Kerr's dramatic ballad
"I'll Never Love This Way Again" was a big hit (and a Grammy winner),
"Deja Vu" (written by Hayes and Adrienne
Anderson) was also successful, and the album went platinum. There are a couple of Manilow compositions, and they're not
bad: "In Your Eyes" (orchestrated by Jimmie Haskell) and "All The Time."The band is Manilow and Bill Mays (keyboards), Rick Schlosser (drums),
Mitch Holder (guitar), Will Lee (bass) and Alan Estes (percussion). But it's tuneful enough to
keep you going if you love Warwick's voice, though nothing here ranks
among her best performances.Live And Otherwise (1981)
A double album, three sides live and one side studio, and it's a treat
for fans.David tunes that weren't hits for her:
"(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" and "Close To You"), and
putting more life into her late period hits ("Deja Vu, "I'll Never Love
This Way Again") than there was on the studio versions.Diana Ross hitmaker Michael Masser produced
most of the studio side, and it's unremarkable: none of the tracks
charted as singles.Nothing particularly illuminating, but enjoyable.Warwick's performance had been up to scratch.Top 40
hit) and cheesy aerobics pop ("All The Love In The World").This is lacking even the basic hooks that the best BeeGees work had.As usual, if Warwick doesn't have a good melody to sing, she's
lost, and this time out, well, she's lost on every track.Aretha Franklin records he produced
during this period.Avoid, unless you're a Vandross fan.Manilow's back in the producer's chair.Warwick lets
loose on one more Richard Kerr dramatic ballad, "You Make Me Want To
Love Again," but otherwise she's mostly content to take it easy.Elton John,
Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder (originally recorded by Rod Stewart for the Night Shift soundtrack).Smokey Robinson's "You're My
Hero" is the record's best track, recalling his 60s heyday lyrically,
musically and vocally.Paulinho Da Costa, East, Phillingaes,
Larry Williams, etc.Get A Kick Out Of You," "I Love Paris," "I've Got
You Under My Skin")."Begin The Beguine") but mostly it's a
full orchestra or synths imitating one.Stanley
Jordan, Grover Washington Jr.Bobby Brown hit "Every Little Step."Richard Kerr, Sandy Knox, even Lisa
Stansfield.Dean
Parks, Anthony Jackson, Michael Boddicker, Will Lee and Tee."Captives Of The Heart," is dreadful: it sounds like a soap opera theme.Chico Buarque, and several songs are cowritten by
Warwick herself. The best surprise is a gently swinging version of "Always Something There To Remind Me,"
with guest vocals and guitar by Jonathan Butler."Love Begins With You" is perhaps the drippiest). My Favorite Time Of The Year (2004)
Lemme guess...Kidding aside, Warwick does a remarkable job of breathing life into a bunch of hoary holiday standards: by playing fast and loose with melody and phrasing, she gives tunes like "The Christmas Song" and "Silver Bells" an elegance and force they never deserved."Silent Night," accompanied only by piano)."White Christmas" is as loud as the record gets, and that's still quite mellow.Produced by Tena Rix Clark.Sign in or join now
