Badu was born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas, Texas, in 1971.She was one of three siblings raised by single mother Kollen Wright, a former theater actress.Badu's mother nurtured her child's talent for performing from an early age, and by 4 Badu was taking part in her mother's routines at the Dallas Theater Centre.She was now known by her friends as "Apples" (her high school nickname), and had formed a freestyling duo with another female friend.Arabic word for "can do no wrong".She would eventually change her surname to Badu ("manifest truth and light" in Arabic), a personal move which she accredits to her rejection of her slave name.Badu is also known as a five percenter.She taught drama and dance to children at the South Dallas Cultural Center.On", won Grammy Awards at the 1998 ceremonies.Their relationship ended sometime in the late 90s.Badu recorded her first live album, Live, while pregnant with Seven, and the release of the recording coincided with the birth to her child."Bag Lady" was nominated for a Grammy.She hit the road throughout 2002 and much of 2003 on what she dubbed the "Frustrated Artist Tour," in search of inspiration to write and perform new material.The conclusion of the tour saw Badu head back to the studio with new material, and in September of 2003, the Worldwide Underground EP was released.Badu was quoted as saying that the release was designed to serve as one continuous groove.Billboard charts and was certified gold not long after its release, and Badu received four further Grammy nominations for the EP.Music style
Badu's lyrics are highly personal philosophies which throw emotional challenges in the face of the listener.An eclectic collaborator, she has performed with artists from many different genres and backgrounds, among them roots reggae musician and singer Burning Spear.The father of her second child is West Coast rapper The D.Badu also serves as an activist in South Dallas where she grew up.Acting career
