6.Fairport Convention played their first concert at St Michael's Church Hall in Golders Green, North West London on 27 May 1967.Based in suburban north London, the group had coalesced around a bass guitar player and bandleader named Ashley 'Tyger' Hutchings. Thus was born the name of a band that has endured for over four decades. As well as Hutchings and Nicol, there was lead guitarist Richard Thompson and Shaun Frater on drums.Fairport found no shortage of work and was soon a regular act at underground venues such as The Electric Garden, Middle Earth and UFO.The band had only been playing a few months when they caught the ear of Joe Boyd who secured them a contract with Polydor Records.Iain Matthews (who had changed his surname from MacDonald and was spelling his forename 'Ian' at the time) joined the band and the first album, Fairport Convention, was recorded in late 1967 and released in June 1968.Later the band would play with folk guitarist Nick Drake, who also had connections with Joe Boyd.At this early stage, Fairport looked to America (Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan) for material and inspiration. The album did not sell many copies, and Boyd got them signed to Island Records.By the time the second LP, What We Did On Our Holidays, was released Judy Dyble had been replaced by Sandy Denny, a folk singer who had previously recorded as a soloist and with Strawbs. He played the band's albums on his influential BBC shows.Peel also recorded a number of BBC sessions which were later released as the album Heyday.USA by 1968, Fairport Convention was the first English band to concentrate on bringing rock instruments and rock arrangements to traditional songs. However, Fairport Convention was also developing in other ways. The record just missed the top twenty but got the band (with guest triangulist, John Peel) a slot on Top Of The Pops, Britain's most popular television pop music programme at the time.Tragedy

freakin' time!""Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon. The fact that the album was released at all was astonishing in itself.Fairport Convention first took wing into the realms of the British rock scene in 1967.The line up stabilized to Simon Nicol on guitars and vocals, a great man to have in any band as adaptability was his middle name, and enthusiasm he kept in bags.Ashley Hutchings took over the bass responsibilities and being steeped in traditional British folk music became the unspoken leader come spokesman for the band.Ian Matthews was then added as a second vocalist and the band went into the studio after signing a contract with the newly formed Island Record Company.Fairport Convention' Ian Matthews left after contributing to one track on the next album, understandably as it was very hard for him to compete and be compared to Sandy Denny. The new album from the Fairport Convention was a cracker released only six months after their debut album.Unhalfbricking' (1969) was a definite step down the road of development, for the first time including the talents of long time friend and fiddle man Dave Swarbrick for this album as a session player, but his future influence on Fairport Convention and British folk rock were swathing.Due to their popularity Fairport Convention were almost constantly on the road, and just when everything seemed to be on the up and up disaster struck. In June 1969 returning from a gig in Birmingham their Van ran off the motorway, in this terrible crash the lives of Martin Lamble and Richard Thomson's girlfriend Jeannie Taylor were snatched away. But Joe Boyd Fairport Convention's manager rented a remote cottage in Farley Chamberlayne, near Winchester in Hampshire (You can tell how remote it was by the address).Dave Mattacks seemed to have the right temperament, was an excellent drummer, and above all made a superb centre half for the Fairport's football team.Fairport Convention were a band again.Collectively it was decided that a new direction had to be taken as the others could not imagine playing the old songs without in particular Martin Lamble on drums. They as many others were impressed by the new music coming out of America particularly 'The Music From The Big Pink' by The Band. They could never inhabit the space occupied by The Band.Once the band had decided where they were going the music was laid down quickly and almost effortlessly.Daytimes were spent playing football in the spacious gardens, or taking long walks with Dave Swarbrick's Collie dog.The results were stupendous, a landmark in rock 'n' roll history.Of the eight tracks, the album opens and closes with originals the Sandy Denny and Ashley Hutchings 'Come All Ye' sets the mood perfectly, whilst 'Crazy Man Michael' by Dave Swarbrick and Richard Thompson brings the album to a fitting close.Sandy Denny and Ashley Hutchings which have been arranged by the band.Certainly Fairport Convention's finest hour.LP 'Si Tu Dois Partir' which actually got to 21 in the charts, and only nine concerts.Sandy Denny and Ashley Hutchings left the band.Sandy Denny to form 'Fortheringay', and Ashley Hutchings to 'Steeleye Span'.Especially strange as these were the two musicians who had taken the band off in it's new direction.Having a new album in the charts by the following July 'Full House'(1970).Fairport Convention banner still record and tour to this day, keeping the Fairport ideals alive.Sadly she died of a brain hemorrhage on Friday 21st April 1978 after falling down some stairs at a friend's house the previous Monday, a great loss to the world. But her beautiful voice lives on as can be heard here on this exquisite album. Was this review helpful to you?In many ways this album was the high water mark of British folk rock.Leige and Leif followed the excellent Unhalfbricking but with Dave Mattacks replacing the deceased Martin Lamble who had passed away in a car accident. The lineup was supplemented by the violin playing Dave Swarbrick, a mainstay of the folk tradition. The album starts off with the joint Ashley Hutchings composition, Come All Ye and is followed by the Fairport arranged but traditional song Reynardine.Matty Groves, already a favourite at live shows, follows next. Many years later Rick Sanders was heard to describe this song as the chance to play like Pink Floyd as it assumed a wholely different role at gigs. The Deserter finds Sandy Denny in great voice with this traditional song, while the medley indicates the shift in direction which was to follow on the next album, Full House.Tam Lin again returns to the rock side of Fairports with another traditional song highlighting Denny, Thompson and Hutchings and some really nice guitar licks.Known to some in the US as Britain's answer to Jefferson Airplane, Fairport brought together traditional England and rock'n'roll in a way that no other band has been able to replicate.See all 48 customer
