Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources.For the American band of the same name, see Fastball (band).During pregame bullpen warmup Chris Young warms up with a four seam fastball.The fastball is the most common type of pitch in baseball.Some "power pitchers," like Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Satchel Paige, Troy Percival, Bob Feller, Bob Gibson, Sam McDowell, Randy Johnson, Justin Verlander, Bobby Jenks, Joel Zumaya, Kyle Farnsworth, Rich Harden, Jake Robbins, Joba Chamberlain, and J.The result is known as an "exploding fastball": a pitch that seems to arrive at the plate quickly despite its low velocity.Fastballs are usually thrown with backspin, so that the Magnus effect creates an upward force on the ball, causing it to fall less rapidly than might be expected.Colloquially, use of the fastball is called throwing heat or putting steam on it, among many other variants.The type of fastball is intended to have minimal lateral movement, if any.The first and most traditional way is to find the horseshoe seam area, or the area where the seams are the farthest apart.Keeping those seams parallel to the body, the pitcher places his index and middle fingers perpendicular to them with the pads on the farthest seam from him.The thumb then rests underneath the ball about in the middle of the two fingers.Because of the deviation from the straight trajectory, it is sometimes called a moving fastball.The pitcher grabs a baseball and finds the area on it where the seams are the closest together.The thumb needs to rest on that seam from the side to the middle of its pad.Sinkerballers tend to induce a lot of ground ball outs.Rising fastball
The rising fastball is an effect perceived by batters, but is known to be a baseball myth.Some batters claim to have seen a "rising" fastball, which starts as a normal fastball, but as it approaches the plate it rises several inches and gains a burst of speed.Such a pitch is known to be physically impossible, due to restrictions of gravity, conservation of momentum, and air density.It has been explained as an optical illusion.What is really happening is that the pitcher first throws a fastball at one speed, and then, using an identical arm motion, is able to throw another fastball at a higher speed.The higher speed fastball both arrives faster, and sinks less due to its high speed.Thus, as the pitch is thrown the batter expects a fastball at the same speed, yet it arrives more quickly and at a higher level.The batter's eyes and brain perceive it as a fastball which has risen and increased in speed.Factoring in the element of depth perception when the hitter watches the pitcher from sixty feet away from the pitcher's mound, and the hitter perceives the pitcher's size and positioning on the mound to be much less elevated than it actually is.Hence, to the hitter an overhand pitch will appear to be thrown at a hitter's shoulder level (or even belt level), as opposed to several inches above the hitter's head, from where the pitch is actually released from the pitcher's hand.This perception enhances the apparent "rising" motion of the fastball when the pitch passes by the hitter at a higher level than where the hitter perceived the pitch to have left the pitcher's hand.It is possible for a rising fastball to be thrown by a submarine pitcher because of the technique with which they throw the ball.Because they throw almost underhand, with their knuckles near the dirt, the batter perceives the sensation like the ball going upward because of its rarely experienced trajectory.However, this is not the traditional rising fastball batters believe they see.Sid Fernandez was known for throwing a rising fastball from a slightly "submarine" motion.This usually causes the pitch to shift inwards or outwards by a few inches, less than a typical slider, and often very late.Mariano Rivera, a relief pitcher for the New York Yankees, has perhaps the best known cutter in baseball.Rivera can deliver extremely late motion while still throwing the ball around 95 mph.Esteban Loaiza, currently with the Los Angeles Dodgers, effectively used a cutter to help him win 21 games in 2003.Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays also has an effective cut fastball, but claims that overusing it has given him forearm trouble in the past.Yankee Andy Pettitte is the only other current pitcher who has had as much success throwing the cutter.The ball does not have the characteristically tight spin of a fastball.Since these two fingers are off to the side of the ball, there is some slippage at release.This is desirable because it is this slippage that robs the ball of spin and causes it to run out of energy and dart randomly as it approaches the batter.Not only is it difficult to control, but it is stressful on the arm.The reason it is so stressful is that there is tension created in the upper arm as a result of the drastic split of the fingers.This has a tendency to lock the wrist up and prevents there from being any shock absorption at release.Ming Wang of the New York Yankees, Kelvim Escobar of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Jose Contreras, and Jake Robbins of the Chicago White Sox, Jonathan Papelbon and Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox, Jeremy Accardo of the Toronto Blue Jays, J."The Fastest Pitcher in Baseball History".All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.Fastball is an American rock band that formed in Austin, Texas in the 1990s.The band originally called themselves "Magneto U.A" but changed their name after signing with Hollywood Records.In 1998, their album All The Pain Money Can Buy reached platinum sales within six months of its release, and stayed on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart for a year.They also received an MTV Video Music Award nomination as Best New Artist.Bio
In 1994, Tony Scalzo, Joey Shuffield, and Sean Lachut, formed Fastball in Austin, Texas.Shuffield and Zuniga first played together in a band called Big Car.After a stint with another group called Wild Seeds, Shuffield introduced Zuniga to Scalzo, who had played in a band called the Goods in Orange County, California.The trio decided to form their own band, and began playing around the Austin area.When they first started out, the band tried out several names, such as Star 69, Magneto, Magneto USA, and Starchy, before finally deciding to adopt the name Fastball.They share the name with the group's favorite pornographic film.It's like a really raunchy Bull Durham."Fastball quickly built a strong following in the Austin area, and created a regional buzz.They did, and Fastball soon signed a record contract.The album didn't sell very well, but it did win the "Best Pop Band" category at the Austin Music Awards.The following year, the members of Fastball were unsure of their future.The members of Fastball still had side jobs as late as January of 1998.Tony Scalzo worked the graveyard shift at The Bagel Manufactory in Austin.Fastball's second album, All The Pain Money Can Buy, was released on Hollywood Records.Scalzo was inspired to write the song in 1997, after reading a news article about an elderly couple who had disappeared in Texas.Scalzo imagined that they began reminiscing and decided to take off on their own romantic trip; however, the true story didn't have such a happy ending.RV and were found dead at the bottom of a canyon.In 1999, Fastball received two Grammy Award nominations as a result of All the Pain Money Can Buy.They also received an MTV Award nomination for Best New Artist.Riding high on their success, the group headed back into the studio to record their third album, The Harsh Light of Day.Produced by Julian Raymond and Fastball, the album was released in September of 2000.Although The Harsh Light of Day sold less than 85,000 copies (compared to All The Pain Money Can Buy's 1,000,000+), the trio didn't lose steam and chalked it up to lacking a musical category to fit into."You can't write down what we do in a sentence," Zuniga told Mac Randall at Launch.But in a way, that's our saving grace also, because you can't find an easy angle to summarize us and exploit us.In October of 2000, Fastball began touring in support of The Harsh Light of Day in Amsterdam.In June of 2004, Fastball released their fourth album, Keep Your Wig On, on a new record label, Rykodisc.Members
