disease's stranglehold on the continent. Many governments in Africa were in official denial of it's spread, as the World Health Organization was to find over the years to it's horror. He was the most visible artist in Africa partly because of his constant struggle with the successive governments in his Nigeria.Thoughout his life he was beaten, imprisoned, and burned out of his home. His mother was on stage to fifty or more.Though he was adept with many instruments, those who saw his concerts will mostly recall his prowling the stage, or even the audience. No studio wizardry, no overdubs.MCA has felt, correctly, was not indiginous to Africa at all, but brought there by Europeans and people from the Middle East.If anything, the song is even more relevant today than when it was recorded in 1978.It should also be said that both his father and grandfather were Protestant ministers. This was, of course, the song which precipitated the seige and destruction of Kalakuta.Three of the thirteen cuts are edited down to a more manageable size, but they're lovingly shortened and you won't notice a thing. In spite of the minimal editing, there are no short tracks here. This is an excellent compendium, well suited to the needs of longtime fans, or as a perfect introduction to the art of this eloquent man, who though less well known, is as important a voice for social protest as Bob Marley was.Essential listening, pretty damn good for dancing too.Was this review helpful to you? What to say about this music?See all 35 customer reviews...CD to start a Fela Collection Having rebelled...Few Afropop stars dare use celebrity to criticize political leaders.Of those who have, none has inveighed with such gusto, or paid so dearly for it as Nigeria's maverick bandleader Fela Anikulapo Kuti.Born in the Yoruba enclave Abeokuta to a wealthy family steeped in colonialism, Fela rebelled against his strict upbringing leaving school to study music in London during the late '50s.There, he acquired a taste for jazz.On stage, Fela lead his band through lengthy African funk epistles. When the song crested, a row of women danced and sang and the band's massive cluster of behind the scenes footage from other Sessions alums.Kuti was one of Africa's most controversial musicians and throughout his life he continued to fight for the rights of the common man (and woman) despite vilification, harassment, and even imprisonment by the government of Nigeria.Born to Yoruban parents, Kuti was strongly influenced by both parents, his mother being Funmilayo, a leading figure in the nationalist struggle.Entire recordings often consisted of just a few songs and this propensity for jamming set up a roadblock for Fela to attain commercial acceptance in the United States. He also abhored performing a song after recording it, and this led to audience disinterest in the U.MOP (Movement of the People). The military returned to power in 1983 and within the year Kuti was sentenced to five years in prison on a spurious currency smuggling charge. He was released in 1986 after yet another change of government. It had been rumoured for some time that Fela had a serious illness he was refusing treatment for, many said he was suffering from prostate cancer. But as it turns out, Fela died from complications due to AIDS.Fela was a man with great influence in the African music world, he is irreplaceable and his presence will be sorely misssed.Sign up as a New User Lost your password? His father, like his grandfather, was a minister of the Protestant church, and director of the local grammar school. His mother was a teacher, but later became a politician of considerable influence. His parents sent him to London in 1958, but rather than study medicine like his two brothers and his sister, Fela chose to register in the Trinity School of Music, where he was to spend the next five years. While still a student, he married a Nigerian girl called Remi and had three children. In his spare time, Fela played in a highlife band called Koola Lobitos with other Nigerian musicians living in London.Bremah, who had previously influenced Fela by introducing him to African music circles in Lagos at a time when Western music predominated there.Fela returned to the Nigerian capital in 1963, three years after independence.Over the next few years, they performed regularly in Lagos and then in 1969, in the midst of the Biafra war, Fela decided to take Koola Lobitos to the United States. She introduced Fela to the philosophy and writings of Malcolm X, Eldridge Cleaver and other Black activists and thinkers, through which he was to become aware of the link existing between Black peoples all over the world. At that time, he was still playing the trumpet, having not yet changed to the saxophone and piano. He started singing mostly in Pidgin English rather than Yoruban, so as to be understood all over Nigeria and in neighboring countries.Later he was to become satirical and sarcastic toward those in power, condemning both military and civilian regimes for their crimes of mismanagement, incompetence, theft, corruption and marginalization of the underprivileged. On countless occasions, Fela was to suffer the consequences of his scathing denunciations with arrests, imprisonment and beatings at the hands of authorities.Fela went to Accra to arrange a tour. The entire group was arrested and held for two days before being put on a plane bound for Lagos, banned from returning to Ghana.Upon his return to Lagos, still with nowhere to live, Fela and his entire entourage squatted at the offices of Decca, where they remained for almost two months.Africa 70 to play at the Berlin Festival. After the show, almost all of the musicians ran away.Fela returned to Lagos determined to continue.Any further Presidential aspirations were crushed, however, when a coup brought Nigeria back to military rule.He was only released when, under General Babangida, the judge confessed to having sentenced him with such severity because of pressure from the previous regime.Over the next decade, with an entourage of up to eighty people, now called Egypt 80, Fela made several visits to Europe and the United States. These tours were to receive tremendous public and critical acclaim, and made an important contribution to the worldwide popular acceptance of African rhythms and culture.Even those who did not agree with him were among the million people or more who attended his funeral.Even the many governmental letters of condolence sent to his family were eloquent testimonials to a great man.Rikki Stein (London) 1999.Courtesy of MCA Records."Fela was sweetperhaps not an adjective that would normally be used to describe this tornado of a man, but Fela was sweet to me.He was ready to lay his life on the line in defense of such causes, which he did on countless occasions. Each time they were to beat him, though, he always bounced back with a vengeance, stronger than ever.Heaven help any musician who might stray from his given task. The icing on the cake of a Fela performance was his singers and dancersfabulous glittering unreal creatures from another world who would exude waves of sensuality and downright sexiness that you could cut with a knife. No moon and toon and joon for this articulate firebrand.Once, when running for President of Nigeria, he proclaimed that his first act upon being elected would be to enroll the entire population in the police force. He never left the house, except twice a week to go to the Shrine to play. The road was thronged with tens of thousands of people, until we came to the brow of a hill.Seven hours to cover 20 miles and the band never dropped a note.As we came nearer to Ikeja, we began to worry. How, in fact would we reach The Shrine with a million people in front of us?Night fell as we drew near.We turned in to Pepple Street.Fela was my friend for the past fifteen years. He will live forever through the incredible legacy of more than 50 albums of music which he has left up and through the love and respect of the millions of people who knew him, from near or far.His son, Femi, played a plaintive sax solo.Fela, the Life and Times of an African Musical Icon by Michael E.Temple University Press, 2000.
