By the time Souzay made these recordings for EMI, here licensed for reissue by Testament in excellent remasterings, the noted baritone's voice, never the plushest of instruments, had faded with age.The vocal decline is less evident in the Duparc songs, recorded in 1971 when he was 53, than in the Chausson, which dates from six years later.The Duparc songs were long a Souzay specialty and if he was in fresher voice for his earlier recordings on Decca and Philips, the diction is still impeccable, the slightly understated emotions still powerfully conveyed, and the style still more authentically idiomatic than his successors in this repertory could muster.Florentine, and radiance in L'invitation au voyage, despite the reduced instrument.The Chausson too, packs emotional impact: even though the voice is drier and frayed around the edges, Souzay exploits those limitations for dramatic effect.Throughout, Souzay's longtime partner, pianist Dalton Baldwin, plays with lovely tone and sensitivity to the singer's every nuance.Testament provides full texts and translations, enhancing the experience. |
