bearded and confined to a wheelchair, whereas Donald Swann, at
the piano, had a boyish intellectual look and was referred to by
his partner as 'an all round egghead'.Although their material was humorous neither considered
themselves comedians.He was born in Wales in
1923.Their paths diverged for a few years.The latter invited them to illustrate a talk he was giving at the
Bath Octagon and finding that the audience appreciated their
work, Flanders and Swann began to work on more numbers.They called the show At
The Drop of a Hat.It was so successful that three weeks later it was transferred to
the Fortune Theatre in the West End where it ran for 759
performances and in 1960 transferred to Broadway where it
received similar acclaim.Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood

Indonesian.Audiences thought nothing of sitting in theatres and
singing about mud and hippos, however surreal it may have felt
later.Those things that made us laugh in the 1950s make us

the conveniences, or rather inconveniences, of modem life.Flanders' humour may have been caustic but Swann later commented
on his ability to draw attention to serious matters in a humorous

Donald Swann was born in Llanelli, Wales on September 30, 1923.In 1941 Swann was awarded an exhibition to Christ Church, Oxford, to read modern languages.Egypt, Palestine and Greece.In 1992 Donald Swann was diagnosed with cancer, and he died at Trinity Hospice in South London on March 23, 1994.He was survived by both wives and two children from his first marriage; Rachel Swann and Natasha Swann.Career
A chance meeting between Swann and Flanders in 1948 let to the start of their professional partnership.They began writing songs and light opera, Swann writing the music and Flanders writing the words.At the Drop of a Hat and At the Drop of Another Hat, which they performed all over the world until their partnership ended in 1967.Throughout the 1980s and early 90s he continued performing in various combinations with singers and colleagues and as a solo artist.He wrote a number of hymn tunes which appear in modern standard hymn books.The Space Between the Bars.Swann's Way Out: A Posthumous Adventure.Revised, Arthur James 1993.Father's autobiography
