The Mothers of Invention was a rock and roll band active from 1964 to 1975."The Mothers" on Sunday, May 10, 1964 (that year's Mother's Day). The Mothers and Wilson then spent several months and thousands of dollars recording and editing the band's first album, a double LP named Freak Out!.Their debut was released in 1966, and The Mothers of Invention subsequently went on tour.MGM recorded sales of Freak Out!In 1970, Zappa created a new incarnation of The Mothers which included only one other original Mothers member, Don Preston.Ian Underwood (keyboards, guitar, woodwind, vocals) and Ruth Underwood (marimba, vibes), who had joined the original Mothers for the recording of Uncle Meat in 1969.June 1971 and Just Another Band From L.Zappa again disbanded the band in late 1971 after an attacker had pushed him offstage into an orchestra pit at a concert in London, resulting in serious injuries that kept him off the road for more than a year.Although Zappa had always released, and would continue to release, albums explicitly as solo artist (Lumpy Gravy, 1967; Hot Rats, 1969; Chunga's Revenge, 1970; Apostrophe ('), 1974), various line ups of the Mothers followed in the 70s, the band now clearly a mere vehicle for Frank Zappa.Elsewhere, 1974) or Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (One Size Fits All, 1975) until Zappa permanently dropped the moniker in 1976, from the release of Zoot Allures (1976) onwards.Ahead of Their Time, 1993).Since 1980, Jimmy Carl Black, Don Preston and Bunk Gardner, plus other former members of the Mothers of Invention, have occasionally performed and recorded under the name "The Grandmothers" or "The Grande Mothers Re:Invented", performing music by Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart as well as originals and blues standards.June 1971 1995, and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.In 2005, his 1968 album with the Mothers of Invention, We're Only in It for the Money, was inducted into the United States National Recording Preservation Board's National Recording Registry. In 2007, his birthtown Baltimore declared August 9 official "Frank Zappa Day" in his honor. They had four children: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.During Zappa's childhood, the family often moved because his father, a chemist and mathematician, had various jobs in the US defense industry.Due to the home's proximity to the Arsenal which stored mustard gas, Zappa's father kept gas masks on hand in case of an accident. As a child, Zappa was often sick, suffering from asthma, earaches and a sinus problem. He was, however, mainly interested in sounds for their own sake, in particular, the sounds of drums and percussion.Events that initiated Zappa's deep engagement with modern classical music occurred when he was around thirteen.Ionisation as "a weird jumble of drums and other unpleasant sounds."Zappa convinced the salesman to sell him the store's demonstration copy at a discount. His own heterogeneous ethnic background and the diverse cultural and social mix that existed in and around greater Los Angeles at the time were also crucial in situating Zappa as a practitioner and fan of "outsider art".Zappa kept the framed letter displayed for the rest of his life.Sample from the album Zappa in New York (1978) Problems listening to the file?Although he performed as a singer and guitarist for most of his later career, Zappa's original influence by classical percussion compositions made him retain a strong interest in rhythm and percussion and his bands have been noted for the excellence of their drummers and percussionists. His works such as "The Black Page", written originally for drum kit but later developed for larger bands, are notorious for complexity in rhythmic structure, featuring radical changes of tempo and metre as well as short, densely arranged passages. In 1956 Zappa met Don Van Vliet (best known by his stage name "Captain Beefheart") while taking classes at Antelope Valley High School and playing drums in a local band, The Blackouts.Van Vliet's Trout Mask Replica, which Zappa produced, and the 1975 Mothers of Invention live album Bongo Fury). In 1957 Zappa was given his first guitar.Among his early influences were Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Howlin' Wolf and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (he would in the 1970s and 80s invite Watson to perform on several albums). He graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 1958, and he would later acknowledge two of his music teachers on the sleeve of the 1966 album Freak Out!He left community college after one semester, and maintained thereafter a disdain for formal education, taking his children out of school at age 15 and refusing to pay for their college."Kay" Sherman during his short stay at college, they moved in together in Ontario, and got married in December 1960.Throughout his career, Zappa always took a keen interest in the visual presentation of his work, designing some of his album covers and directing his own films and videos. It contains many themes that would subsequently appear on later Zappa records.Zappa may therefore have worked on it years before its recording.During the early 1960s Zappa also wrote and produced songs for other local artists.Wop group The Penguins), and producer Paul Buff.Although none of the recordings from the period achieved major commercial success, Zappa earned money allowing him to stage a concert of his orchestral music in 1963 as well as broadcasting and recording it.In addition, Zappa lost several recordings made at Studio Z in the process, and eventually he could no longer afford having the studio. The Soul Giants, as a guitarist.Zappa accepted, and soon he assumed leadership and convinced the other band members that they should play his music so as to increase the chances of getting a record contract. The band was renamed "The Mothers" on Mothers Day.Americans working as a major label pop producer at this time.Wilson signed The Mothers to the Verve division of MGM, which had built up a strong reputation for its modern jazz recordings in the 1940s and 1950s, but was then attempting to diversify into pop and rock, with an "artistic" or "experimental" bent.Sample from the album Freak Out!Problems listening to the file?Wilson, however, provided the industry clout and connections to get the unknown group financial resources needed.Zappa moved into a house in Laurel Canyon with friend Pamela Zarubica, who appeared on the album. After a short promotional tour following the release of Freak Out!American society but also of the people fighting it in the Sixties. The Mothers of Invention played in New York in late 1966, and being successful, they were offered a contract at the Garrick Theatre during Easter 1967.This also proved successful, and Herb Cohen managed to extend the booking, which eventually came to last half a year.At one evening, Zappa managed to entice some U.European tour, the Mothers of Invention recorded the album widely regarded as the peak of the group's late Sixties work, We're Only in It for the Money (released 1968).It was produced by Zappa, with Wilson credited as executive producer. The cover photo parodied that of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.Listeners and critics were not sure whether the album was a satire or a tribute. The Rite of Spring is heard during one song. While in New York, Zappa increasingly used tape editing as a compositional tool.Zappa was able to augment his studio productions with excerpts from live shows, and vice versa.Zappa moreover evolved a compositional approach, which he called "conceptual continuity."The idea was that any project or album was part of a larger project.Everything was connected, and musical themes and lyrics would reappear in different form on later albums.Conceptual continuity clues are found throughout Zappa's entire oeuvre.During the late Sixties, Zappa also continued to develop the business sides of his career.Zappa produced the double album Trout Mask Replica for Captain Beefheart, and releases by Alice Cooper, Tim Buckley, Wild Man Fischer, The GTOs as well as Lenny Bruce's last live performance.Although the Mothers of Invention had fantastic success in Europe and England, had fanatic fans everywhere, they were not doing that well.In late 1969, Zappa therefore broke up band due to financial strain.Remaining recordings with the band from this period were collected on Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Burnt Weeny Sandwich (both 1970).Sample from the album Hot Rats Problems listening to the file? After he disbanded the Mothers of Invention, Zappa released the acclaimed solo album Hot Rats (1969).Zappa kept composing music for symphony orchestra while playing and recording with the Mothers of Invention. He made contact with conductor Zubin Mehta and a concert was arranged in May 1970 where Metha conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic amended with a rock band.In late 1970, Zappa put together a new version of The Mothers (from then on, he mostly dropped the "of Invention").It was shot on video, and transferred to 35 mm film, and was released to mixed reviews.Royal Albert Hall prior to the beginning of filming was cancelled. The reason for the cancellation was that a representative of the Royal Albert Hall found some of the lyrics obscene. He would in 1975 lose a lawsuit against the Royal Albert Hall for breach of contract. This left him wheelchair bound for a time, forcing him off the road for over half a year.Upon his return to the stage in September 1972, he was still wearing a leg brace for a period thereafter, had a noticeable limp and could not stand for very long while on stage.Zappa noted that one leg healed "shorter than the other" (a reference later found in the lyrics of songs "Zomby Woof" and "Dancin' Fool"), which was cause of chronic back pains for years.Meanwhile, the Mothers were left in limbo, and eventually formed the core of Flo and Eddie's band as they set out on their own.You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol.MGM over the rights of the early Mothers of Invention recordings, as well as preventing Zappa access to any of his previously recorded material during the trials.Zoot Allures (1976) directly to Warner Bros.In December 1976, Zappa appeared as a featured musical guest on the NBC television show Saturday Night Live. His performances included an impromptu musical collaboration with cast member John Belushi during the instrumental piece "The Purple Lagoon."Belushi appeared as his Samurai Futaba character playing the tenor sax with Zappa conducting.SNL booth announcer Don Pardo, was performed.Zappa in New York (1978).Don Pardo providing the opening narrative). While Zappa had always been explicit about sexuality, his continued insistence on being so fared negatively with some critics.Orchestral Favorites (1979), featuring recordings of a concert with orchestral music Zappa had put together at UCLA back in September 1975.Sample from the album Sheik Yerbouti Problems listening to the file?Americans have with sex and sexual frankness. Finally, the album contains what would become one of Zappa's most famous guitar "signature pieces," "Watermelon in Easter Hay."About people who do stuff that is not normal. The 2 hour and 40 minutes movie was based on footage from a number of concerts in front of a New York audience around Halloween 1977.It also contained several extraordinary sequences of clay animation by Bruce Bickford who had earlier provided animation sequences for Zappa to a 1974 TV special (which would later become available on the video The Dub Room Special (1982)).Zappa ever had (mostly featuring drummer Vinnie Colaiuta).American people to believe anything. The same year the double album You Are What You Is was released. The album included one complex instrumental, "Theme from the 3rd Movement of Sinister Footwear," but focused mainly on rock songs with Zappa's sardonic social commentary satirical lyrics targeted at teenagers, the media, and religious and political hypocrisy."Dumb All Over," is a tirade on religion, as is "Heavenly Bank Account," wherein Zappa rails against TV evangelists such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson for their purported influence on the US administration as well as their usage of religion as a means of raising money.Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar Some More, and The Return of the Son of Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, which were initially sold via mail order by Zappa himself, but were later released commercially through CBS label due to popular demand.Fusion, completed by Zappa shortly before his death, featuring solos recorded between 1979 and 1988 (with an emphasis on 1988) was released in 2006.Zappa compositions conducted by Kent Nagano and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.London Symphony Orchestra, Vol.It came after Zappa had experienced a few unsuccessful and financially costly attempts to have his orchestral works performed.Zappa was not pleased with the LSO recordings as they were not perfect performances of his compositions. The most notable example is "Strictly Genteel," which was recorded after the trumpet section had been out for drinks on a break.Sample from the album Boulez Conducts Zappa: The Perfect Stranger Problems listening to the file? For the remainder of his career, much of Zappa's work was affected by use of the synclavier as a compositional and performance tool. With the complex music he wrote, the synclavier represented anything you could dream up.With the Synclavier, any group of imaginary instruments can be invited to play the most difficult passages .Pierre Boulez (which was listed as an influence on Freak Out!Ensemble InterContemporain, heard interacting with Senators Fritz Hollings, Slade Gorton, Al Gore (who admitted to being a Zappa fan), and, most notably, an exchange with Florida Senator Paula Hawkins over what toys the Zappa children played with.Zappa would also go on to argue with PMRC representatives on the CNN's Crossfire in 1986 and 1987.Parts are also found on You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, volumes 4 and 6.In the late 1980s Zappa's passion for American politics was becoming a bigger part of his life.He personally oversaw the remastering of all his 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s albums for the new compact disc medium.Havel, a lifelong fan, and was asked by Havel to serve as consultant for the government on trade, cultural matters and tourism.Zappa enthusiastically agreed and began meeting with corporate officials interested in investing in Czechoslovakia.Within a few weeks, however, the US administration put pressure on the Czech government to withdraw the appointment.Zappa's political work would soon come to a halt, however. In 1991, he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. After his diagnosis, Zappa devoted most of his energy to modern orchestral and synclavier works.Although ill, Zappa invited them to Los Angeles for rehearsals of new compositions as well as new arrangements of older material.Everything Is Healing Nicely (1999).Frank Zappa died on December 4, 1993, age 52, 1966 he did, but not much longer. The message of Freak Out!This is the soundtrack of the awakening of a new individual sensibility. Now or in 1966, this album is an audacious, vital masterpiece by one of the greatest artists of the century. So here it is, Zappa's first album.Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention created one heck of a first album. It was one of the first double albums in rock history, and certainly one of the wierdest. Those tracks are not available as samples on www.I'd say that the original vinyl is probably the way to go, but the cd is very good too.Besides, the cd saves you flipping records over. Was this review helpful to you?Forty years have passed since it was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world and it is every bit as fresh and fascinating today as it was then.Zappa defies categorization, but for want of anywhere else to put him, he was lumped in with rock musicians.Consider then who is on this album. What none of us fully appreciated at the time was that Zappa was a truly modern classical composer whose repertoire included rock.Ain't Got No Heart, How Could I Be Such A Fool?He also showed us his belligerent, downright hostile side in songs like, You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here. Not surprisingly, it is the songs we skipped over in 1966 that have the most enduring impact; in 1966 they were unintelligible.Eight minutes of Help, I'm A Rock, four of It Can't Happen Here, and twelve minutes of The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet charted territory that was distant indeed considering that, back then, the Kingston Trio was considered hip.No matter how far out Zappa got in later years, the entirety of his splendidly cracked and thoroughly original vision is right here. And remember folks, Zappa claimed that he didn't take drugs, which means he was this weird naturally! Was this review helpful to you?See all 61 customer reviews...Zappa and the Mothers of Invention when I borrowed this double album set from a friend. It belonged to his sister who was away at college. In many cases, when an artist puts out a great debut album (or film, book, TV programme), it is quite often a pain in the butt, as they have an enormously difficult time coming up...One of the most ambitious (not to mention greatest) debuts of all time Frank Zappa's debut is a bizarre, eclectic, hilarious piece of work that's one of the man's best.To be fair, I'm not at all familiar with Zappa.People have many bench marks in their lives, things that remain forever vivid in their memories.Published 18 months ago by K.Every single song on this album is amazing. That's all I have to say.See all 61 customer reviews...Be the first person to add an article about this item at Amapedia. What Do Customers Ultimately Buy After Viewing Items Like This?My Zappa forget about it and dig in to the records. So we've provided a review page despite the fact that we don't have anything close to a comprehensive Zappa collection (a mere 24 records!Alphonzo's Pancake and The Black Page. One personality usually dominates any given record, and the typical listener will love one or more facets, hate at least one, and be indifferent to the rest.Alroy seems to like the Fusion Bandleader more, and Wilson the Just Plain Rock And Roller, but basically our attitudes are similar, and your mileage may vary considerably.Carefully crafted, and brilliant."How Could I Be Such a Fool"; "Any Way the Wind Blows").Frank indulges himself anyway and tacks 20+ minutes of aural insanity onto the end of the record. The album opens with several terrific songs ("Who Are The Brain Police?"We're Only in Zappa's catalogue.Goes Home" is goddamned funny.Lumpy Gravy (1967) Disposable collection of conversations by Frank's uninteresting pals, and chunks of noise.American scene by 1968 ("Who Needs the Peace Corps"; "Flower Punk").Even the liner notes are so far ahead of the curve that they make your head spin. Not because of the rerecorded tracks, but because it's uncensored (a few parts of the 1968 release were recorded backwards and are incomprehensible there) and because remixing brings many of the orchestral passages farther forward, making it easier to hear them.JA) Ahead Of Their Time (rec.An official live Mothers recording taken from a single show. The sound quality could only be better than the official Rhino bootleg series."Uncle Meat" and "King Kong" (it does eventually dissolve into unlistenable chaos). There's also a good take on his hard rock joke tune "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" (released two years later), and the weakest number still features some creative noise making ("Some Ballet Music").CD rerelease includes an extra half hour of this crap.Much of the music is real good, although most of the Mothers weren't too sharp on their instruments (Ian Underwood, star of "Ian Underwood Whips It Out," and FZ himself excepted).Yet another doowop sendup ("Electric Aunt Jemima") cooks. And there are several versions of the best tunes ("King Kong" has seven versions, and the title track has at least two) to choose from.Joni Mitchell as part of the L.Express), as well as Zappa stalwarts like Ian Underwood and Captain Beefheart, who contributes characteristically bizarre vocals to "Willie The Pimp."The only weak track is the overlong "Son Of Mr.Green Genes," a remake of a song from Uncle Meat.Though FZ gets credit for trying to introduce these techniques to a rock audience, the pieces themselves are nowhere near as innovative, accomplished or interesting as works by pioneers like Dolphy, Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman."Rudy Wants To Buy Yez A Drink").Guerin show up on a couple of tracks. Some of the material is abstract, inaccurately performed, repeated on Fillmore East ("The Mud Shark"), or just too poorly recorded to show you what the hell Zappa was up to, but it's remarkably entertaining anyway.June 1971 (1971) This live disc was his second record (after We're Only) to hit the Top 40, but it's almost unlistenable. It's a concept album, all right: dirty jokes about groupies who are supposedly after Flo and Eddie, but want to hear their big hit ("Happy Together") first.Good luck finding the album in any form, as United Artists allowed it to go out of print years ago.JA) Just Another Band From L.Half the running time is eaten up by "Billy The Mountain."But the vocal tunes are weak. And it is a good demonstration of Zappa's ability to function in an instrumental jazz context. But otherwise there's too much wasted air space here.Mike Altschul on horns, vocals, etc.The Grand Wazoo (1972) A mock concept album, like the later Apostrophe', this time with almost no words; the performances are decent but uninspired.Funk imitator before hitting his stride as Anita Baker's producer, overplays to an alarming degree. There's one decent fusion groove, "Eat That Question," and scraps of interesting music elsewhere, but they're few and far between.DBW) This looks like the last album with Aynsley Dunbar as the regular drummer, although he guested later.Gonna be a dental floss tycoon" ("Montana"), not to mention others best left unquoted in mixed internet company. If the concept of yellow snow strikes you as screamingly funny, go snap this record up.The mock storyline, something about an Eskimo, is too stupid to be offensive. But the real bad news is on the longer tracks, which repeat the same banal licks for minute after minute ("Stinkfoot," the title track).DBW) I take exception to DBW's evaluation of this work of art.Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast" clearly has his finger on the pulse of popular culture. And hey, the band is good too. This was Zappa's biggest hit and his only gold record; in my view it's deserved, with some of the songs ranking among Frank's best ("Cosmik Debris").It's far from light entertainment, though; several pieces are so long and complex they're hard to follow ("Inca Roads")."Can't Afford No Shoes."JA) Bongo Fury (1975) A collaboration with Captain Beefheart, recorded live in Texas. It features Zappa regulars like George Duke and Tom Fowler.JA) Zoot Allures (1976) Captain Beefheart makes a guest appearance on harmonica. To get revenge, he played the entire album over the radio, ensuring that bootleggers would have access to his original master, but it was never given a full release until Rykodisc got around to it in 1996.JA) Sleep Dirt (1979) Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Terry Bozzio, and Chad Wackerman are among the players.NYC with the Sheik Yerbouti band, including Terry Bozzio, Adrian Belew, and Peter Wolf."Dinah Moe" is sped up significantly, but to no avail.Vida" into song after song.Sheik Yerbouti (1979) A double LP collected on one CD.More often he switches gears many times within each track; this works well on the disco sendup "Dancin' Fool" but more often is just distracting you from the fact that the individual sections are trivial ("Wild Love," "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes").Orchestral Favorites (1979) Terry Bozzio appears on this one."Joe's Garage" is the story of every band that never made it to the top.Ike Willis and some terrific guitar solos.Little Green Rosetta" is far less amusing than the mindless disco he seeks to parody.Luc Ponty shows up to play a baritone violin duet with FZ on bouzouki ("Canard du Jour"), but for me it's the least enlightening cut on the record."I'm A Beautiful Guy," "Charlie's Enormous Mouth") and religion ("The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing"); though there's still a lot of silliness ("Conehead") he lays off women and gay men for once (except on the appalling "Jumbo Go Away"), so it's much more palatable to PC types like your humble servant.DBW) The double CD set includes London Symphony Orchestra Vol.JA) The Perfect Stranger (1984) A classical record with the Ensemble InterContemporain, and the first appearance of the stupid little dog.JA) Them Or Us (1984) There's a version of "Whippin' Post" here.Fish (1984) Some 70s compatriots like the Bozzios make guest appearances.Draw your own conclusions.DBW) Francesco Zappa (1984) Apparently a solo experiment with classical music, and with stupid little dogs.Steve Vai, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Ike Willis, and Ray White.Does Humor Belong In Music?"Let's Move To Cleveland," which also has a long, generic jazz piano solo by guest Alan Zavod. And just to offend everyone, there's a cover of the Clovers' pointlessly profane "Cocksucker's Ball."The band also includes Willis, White, Thunes, and keyboard player Bobby Martin, but not Vai.Etienne," the only track featuring anyone other than Zappa (his full road band is in the mix).Guitar (1988) A collection of guitar solos that runs over two hours; some of them are graced with politicized titles like "Orrin Hatch On Skis."Broadway The Hard Way (1988) One of three live records from the aborted 1988 tour; this compiles most of the new material presented on the tour, along with a couple of older tracks like "Dickie's Such An Asshole" and "Outside Now."Lyrically, he's back to hilarious political satire, mostly focusing on Republican misadventures ("When The Lie's So Big") and TV evangelists ("What Kind Of Girl?""Rhymin' Man") and even Michael Jackson ("Why Don't You Like Me?"Plate Heaven At The Green Hotel," keeping the focus on the backing band."Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk")."Zoot Allures") and many are bizarre cover versions ("Stairway To Heaven"; "Theme From 'Bonanza'"; "Bolero"; both "Purple Haze" and "Sunshine Of Your Love").JA) Make A Jazz Noise Here (1991) Another live album based on the 1988 tour."The Orange County Lumber Truck" and "Harry, You're A Beast."Spot Tornado" suite excepted). You're probably wondering why you're here...
