see Gene Clark (disambiguation).Gene Clark is best remembered for his association with the Byrds between 1964 and 1966 but there was much more to his body of work than this legacy.Joe Meyers and the Sharks. He began performing with several folk groups working out of Kansas City at the Castaways Lounge, owned by Hal Harbaum, where he was discovered by the New Christy Minstrels, in August 1963, who hired him for their ensemble and with whom he remained for six months.Beatles convert Jim (later Roger) McGuinn and in early 1964 they began to assemble a band that would become The Byrds.McGuinn for their major singles and Dylan covers, despite Clark's superior voice. This disappointment, combined with Clark's dislike of traveling (including a chronic fear of flying) and resentment by other band members about the extra income he derived from his songwriting, led to internal squabbling and he left the group in early 1966.Clark, together with The Flying Burrito Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, Poco and The Byrds can be credited as prime influences on later soft Country Rock performers such as The Eagles, Pure Prairie League, and Firefall. In 1970 Clark began work on a new single, recording two tracks with the original members of the Byrds (each recording his part separately). The resulting songs, "She's The Kind Of Girl" and "One in a Hundred", were not released at the time due to legal problems and were included later on Roadmaster.Frustrated with the music industry, Clark bought a home at Albion near Mendocino, disavowed alcohol, married, and fathered two children while living off his still substantial Byrds royalties. It wasn't until 1971 that a further Gene Clark solo set finally emerged. The album was meant to be named White Light but, possibly due to the record label's concern about drug references, the title Gene Clark was used. All of the material was written by Clark, with the exception of the Dylan number "Tears of Rage".Launched to almost universal critical acclaim, the LP failed to gain commercial success, except in Holland where it was also voted album of the year by rock music critics.Once more, Clark's refusal to undertake promotional touring adversely affected sales. In the spring of 1971, Clark was commissioned by Dennis Hopper to contribute the tracks "American Dreamer" and "Outlaw Song" to Hopper's film project, "American Dreamer".Clark's compositions "Full Circle" and "Changing Heart" plus the Neil Young covers on which he did the lead vocal work ("See The Sky About To Rain" and "Cowgirl In The Sand") were widely regarded as the standout tracks on a record which received overwhelmingly negative critical response. On the basis of the quality of Clark's Byrds contributions, David Geffen signed him to Asylum Records in early 1974.Deeply affected by his visions, he composed numerous songs which would serve as the basis for his only Asylum LP, the aptly titled No Other.Geffen berated Clark and Kaye.In spite of these setbacks, he mounted his first solo tour (by road) in an attempt to salvage No Other, playing colleges and clubs with backing group, the Silverados. In 1977 Clark released his RSO Records debut entitled Two Sides to Every Story. In a belated attempt to find an appreciative public, he temporarily overcame his fear of flying and launched an international promotional tour.McGuinn, Clark and Hillman was a rebirth in both performing and songwriting for Clark. The media loved the band and they performed on many TV rock shows, including repeated performances on The Midnight Special, where they played both new material and Byrds hits.April 1979 and Clark contributed heavily to the band since it was an outgrowth of his London shows.McGuinn, Clark and Hillman's second release was to have been a full group effort entitled City, but a combination of Clark's unreliability and his dissatisfaction with their musical direction (mostly regarding Ron and Howard Albert's production) resulted in the billing change on City to "Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, featuring Gene Clark".Despite the turmoil, Clark penned a classic love song, "Won't Let You Down", rumoured to have been offered as an olive branch to the other former Byrds.Clark moved to Hawaii with Jesse Ed Davis to try and overcome his drug dependency and remained there until the end of 1981.Firebyrd (the title acknowledges the Byrds and Firefall origins of some members). While waiting for Firebyrd to be released, Clark joined up with Chris Hillman and others in an abortive venture called Flyte which failed to secure a recording contract and was quickly dissolved. When Firebyrd was finally issued, in 1984, it coincided with the emergence of jangle rockers such as R.Tom Petty who had sparked a new interest in the Byrds and so Clark began developing new fans among L.He embraced his new status by appearing as a guest with The Long Ryders and by cutting a duo album with Carla Olson of the Textones titled So Rebellious a Lover in 1986.His health began to deteriorate and, at the same time, he also lost a certain amount of goodwill among longtime Byrds fans due to his collaboration with drummer Michael Clarke in a series of shows billed "A 20th Anniversary Celebration of The Byrds."However, Clark's health continued to decline as his drinking accelerated and on May 24, 1991, not long after he had begun work on a second album with Carla Olson, Gene Clark died at the age of 46, the coroner declaring that he succumbed as a result of "natural causes" brought on by a bleeding ulcer.Gene Clark's songs have been covered by several artists.Death In Vegas covered his song "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" on their 2003 album Scorpio Rising.References Einarson, John (2005).Tambourine Man: The Story Of the Byrds' Gene Clark. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.Throughout his career, Clark's official bio gave his year of birth as 1941; only after his death did it become generally known that Clark was actually three years younger than previously reported. The age discrepancy may stem from the fact that he was only 18 when he was hired by the New Christy Minstrels; he may have decided his life would be simpler if he were 21.It may even predate that period, since he was apparently performing in clubs before his 18th birthday. On November 17, 1944, Harold Eugene Clark was born in Tipton, Missouri, a town of about two thousand souls 75 miles from Jefferson City.Clark came from a large family, with twelve siblings, all younger. As a child living in Missouri, and then on a family farm in Bonner Springs, Kansas, Clark heard plenty of country and bluegrass during his childhood. As a young boy, Clark enjoyed Hank Williams and other country musicians, but in his early teen years, he was, like McGuinn and Hillman, galvanized by Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, and other early rockers. The Surf Riders By the late '50s, Clark, like McGuinn, had grown away from rock and roll and discovered folk music, then enjoying a commercial boom after the success of the Kingston Trio in 1958.Clark's next group was a band called the Rum Runners.Kingston Trio, not the Beach Boys or the Ventures. The Surf Riders played regularly at a Kansas City club called (for similar reasons) Castaways, and quickly became a popular draw in Kansas City.In June of 1963, Gene Clark had his first big break.Randy Sparks and a couple members of his popular folk group the New Christy Minstrels came into Castaways to check out the Surf Riders.Until recently, Gene Clark's tenure with the group was obscure, presumably because of the group's lack of street credibility with both the rock audience and the folk music purists who tend to make up the music press.Christy biographer Tom Pickles shed some welcome light on this phase of Clark's development with a lengthy profile in a recent issue of the Byrdzine Full Circle.Clark's stint with the group. It was Ellis who suggested that Sparks check out the Surf Riders.Sparks was unhappy with Brookins and needed a replacement quickly; the group had just released their single "Green, Green," which looked likely to be a hit single, and the album Ramblin' (Columbia, 1963) was ready for release in August. The group had a full schedule of upcoming tour dates and TV appearances in support of the single and the new album, and recording dates for other releases were also planned."The Wheeler Dealer" was on the soundtrack of a James Garner film by the same name.In July, the group returned to the studio to record Merry Christmas (Columbia, 1963), which was released in November. As a result, he never stepped into the limelight that his predecessor Ellis had occupied. This project was held in reserve until August of 1964, several months after Clark's departure. In January, the group recorded sessions for another album, Today (Columbia, 1964).According to Pickles, Clark was apparently among the members who missed the sessions due to colds.Ironically, his old bandmate Mike Crumm (aka Crowley) was brought in from the Back Porch Majority to fill in for absent Christies, and actually soloed twice on the album. On January 14, 1964, seven months of constant touring culminated with an appearance at the White House before new President Lyndon Johnson. His role in the group was clearly subordinate, and there was no prospect of the Minstrels singing any of his compositions. Then, when the Minstrels were on tour through Canada, Clark heard the Beatles sing "She Loves You."Overcome with enthusiasm, Clark listened to the songs over and over. One night he showed up at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard and heard Jim McGuinn singing "You Can't Do That."Receive Free You Heard It!Trace Adkins off on young Gene; he began learning the guitar at age nine and was soon picking out Hank Williams tunes, as well as material by early rockers such as Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers. However, Clark longed to perform his own songs and didn't care for life on the road; after hearing the Beatles for the first time, Clark decided he wanted to form a rock band and he quit the NCM and moved to Los Angeles. There, he met a fellow folky who had his head turned around by the Beatles, Jim McGuinn (he would later change his name to Roger) and in 1964 they started assembling a band that would, in time, come to be known as the Byrds.Byrds, and in 1966, Clark opted to leave the group.Columbia Records, the label the Byrds recorded for, signed Clark as a solo artist, and in 1967, he released his first solo set, Gene Clark With the Gosdin Brothers, a pioneering fusion of country and rock. However, Clark's album was released almost simultaneously with the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday, and Clark's set was a commercial bust. With the future of his solo career in doubt, Clark briefly rejoined the Byrds in 1967, but by the end of the year, he once again parted ways with the group.M, but they fared no better at the marketplace than Clark's efforts with the Gosdin Brothers, and in 1969, Clark began work on his first proper solo album, recording a pair of tracks with several members of the Byrds. However, legal problems prevented their release at the time, and it wasn't until 1971 that a Gene Clark solo set finally emerged, entitled White Light.Byrds to cut a reunion album with their original lineup; Clark contributed a pair of fine songs to the project, "Full Circle" and "Changing Heart," but most of the album sounded uninspired and the reunion quickly splintered.Clark, however, had hoped to release the set as a double album, which did not please labelhead David Geffen, and the album stalled in the marketplace without promotion. This led the three men to begin working up new material together once they returned to America, and in 1978, they began touring as McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman.Clark soon became disenchanted with the project, and on their second album, 1980s City, the billing had changed to Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, with Gene Clark. After splitting with McGuinn and Hillman, Clark stayed on the sidelines of music for several years, assembling a band called Flyte that failed to score a record deal.Clark's solo career), but Clark began to develop serious health problems around this time; he had ulcers, aggravated by years of heavy drinking, and in 1988, he underwent surgery, during which much of his stomach and intestines had to be removed. Many clubs simply shortened the billing to the Byrds, and Clarke and Clark soon found themselves in an ugly legal battle with Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, and Chris Hillman over use of the group's name.Roll Hall of Fame in January of 1991, where the original lineup played a few songs together, including Clark's "Feel a Whole Lot Better."However, Clark's health continued to decline as his drinking accelerated, and on May 24, 1991, not long after he had begun work on a second album with Carla Olson, terrific collection put together by Sid Griffin features key album tracks recorded with The Byrds, solo and with various collaborators over the years.Featuring a number of previously rare or such as Brian Wilson, his particular genius was based more in his arrangement and production skills than in writing tunes which hold up when performed by just a singer with an acoustic guitar."She Has A Way" and "The Day Walk" were left off early albums in favor of lesser songs and even cover versions like "Oh!Clark's early success was never matched commercially as a solo artist. His first album was (formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1964) were an American rock band.Roger McGuinn as the only consistent member), they broke up in 1973.Some of their trademark songs include pop covers of Bob Dylan's "Mr.They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and several band members have launched successful solo careers after leaving the group.Greatest Artists of All Time.Origins The Byrds were founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1964 by singers and guitarists Jim McGuinn (born James McGuinn III; he changed his name to Roger McGuinn in 1967, after joining the spiritual movement Subud), Gene Clark, and David Crosby.Bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke joined soon after.Gene Clark, who'd been in the New Christy Minstrels, briefly joined McGuinn in a duo playing at The Folk Den before Crosby, who'd performed with Les Baxter's Balladeers, persuaded them to let him join."The Only Girl I Adore", soon after naming themselves "The Jet Set" (McGuinn and Crosby were aviation buffs). As such they cut a couple of numbers, "You Movin'" and "The Only Girl."They then hired Michael Clarke (who had the right look for the part) to join on drums.Overall, it can be said the members were markedly influenced by the American folk music revival."Don't Be Long", under the name "The Beefeaters".Years later, these World Pacific demos were released as the Preflyte album and even made the lower reaches of the album charts.Rickenbacker for its extremely bright tone) was immediately influential, and has remained so to the present day.The album mixed reworkings of folk songs (most notably Pete Seeger's "The Bells Of Rhymney") with several more Dylan covers, as well as a number of the band's own compositions, mainly written by Gene Clark.Since the band had not yet completely gelled in January, McGuinn had been the only Byrd to play on "Mr.By the time the album was recorded, Melcher was satisfied that the band were up to scratch, and they were to play on all the remaining tracks.Dylan song, "All I Really Want To Do".Unfortunately for The Byrds, Sonny and Cher simultaneously released their own version of the song with greater commercial success. This time they featured more of their own compositions and now had, in Gene Clark, a major songwriter; his songs from this period, including "The World Turns All Around Her", "She Don't Care About Time", "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" and "Set You Free This Time", are widely regarded as amongst the best of the genre. The Yardbirds, were moving in a similar direction).Gene Clark left the band in March 1966, partly due to a fear of flying which made it impossible to keep up with the band's itinerary.Allegedly irritated by the overnight success of manufactured groups such as The Monkees, the group next recorded the satirical and slightly bitter dig at the music business "So You Want To Be A Rock'N'Roll Star", which again broke new ground musically, featuring a brass part played by the South African musician Hugh Masekela. The song achieved modest success as a single and also kicked off their fourth album, Younger Than Yesterday."Have You Seen Her Face", "Time Between", "Thoughts And Words", "The Girl With No Name").In June, when the Byrds performed at the Monterey Pop Festival, Crosby sang the majority of lead vocals, and to the intense annoyance of the other members gave lengthy speeches between every song, on subjects such as the JFK assassination and the benefits of giving LSD to "every man, woman and child in the country".He then added insult to injury by performing later with rival band Buffalo Springfield (filling in for Neil Young).Gene Clark briefly rejoined The Byrds to take his place, but left three weeks later, after again refusing to board an aircraft while on tour. The bluegrass guitarist Clarence White contributed significantly on several tracks, later becoming a permanent band member in 1968.The record mixed folk rock, country, psychedelia and jazz, often within a single song, and attempted to deal with many contemporary themes such as peace, ecology, freedom, drug use, alienation and mankind's place in the Universe. Now reduced to a duo, The Byrds quickly recruited Hillman's cousin Kevin Kelley as drummer and the band went out on tour in support of The Notorious Byrd Brothers as a trio.Country rock On February 15, 1968 they played at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the first group of longhairs ever to do so, and immediately started recording their next album in a wholly Country style with Parsons choosing and singing many of the songs. However, on July 29, Parsons quit the band just before they flew to South Africa because he refused to play to segregated audiences. At the same time, Sweetheart of the Rodeo was released, most of Parsons' vocals being replaced by either McGuinn or Hillman due to legal problems with Parsons' previous record company.Basement Tapes collection, and more traditional songs from such unlikely sources as The Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life").Bob Dylan's "Nashville Skyline".The first country rock band was Gram's International Submarine Band, released by the indie record company that created legal problems for Gram with the Byrds.McGuinn, now the only original member left, hired bassist John York to replace Hillman and the resulting quartet recorded the Dr.Hyde album and released it in February 1969 to poor US sales and moderate UK success. In July 1969 The Byrds were the headliner of the Schaefer Music Festival in New York City's Central Park, along with Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, B.The title track was composed by McGuinn (expanding on a verse line written by Bob Dylan) as the music theme for the 1969 hippie movie Easy Rider, and the album sold well off the back of the movie's huge success.By the time this album was released, John York had left the band because his girlfriend didn't want him going out on the road.In 1970, The Byrds released the double album (Untitled) which charted well in the UK and acceptably in the US.It also included a 16 minute live version of Eight Miles High.In July 1973, White was killed by a motor vehicle while he was loading equipment after a gig in Palmdale, California.Soon afterwards, Gram Parsons died, as a result of an overdose of morphine and alcohol, in the Joshua Tree Motel, California.Skip Battin and John Guerin either quit or were fired after the February 10, 1973 show in Ithaca, NY and were replaced with Chris Hillman (ironically) and Joe Lala respectively for the Byrds' final two shows on February 23 (Burlington, VT) and 24 (Passaic, NJ).The five original Byrds all briefly reunited in late 1972 (while McGuinn was still on tour with the CBS version of the Byrds) to cut the reunion album Byrds. The album garnered withering reviews and a planned tour of the original five Byrds to support it never materialized. Some of the earlier and later live shows were advertised by unscrupulous promoters as Byrds reunions.Clarke and Clark toured separately under The Byrds' name at that time, and from 1989 through most of 1993 Clarke toured occasionally as "The Byrds Featuring Michael Clarke" with former Byrd Skip Battin along with newcomers Terry Jones Rogers and Jerry Sorn. These shows led to McGuinn, Hillman, and Crosby recording four new studio tracks for the boxed set The Byrds in 1990.The entire band's past members were honored at this induction.Gene Clark died later that year and, two years later, Michael Clarke succumbed to liver disease brought on by alcoholism. In addition, there have been two Byrds box sets: " The Byrds" (October 1990) and the more recent " There Is A Season" (September 2006).Hyde, Byrdmaniax and Farther Along were deleted from the Legacy catalogue. The latter two now
