16.Some psychologists, such as Robert Baker, claim that what we call hypnosis is actually a form of learned social behavior, a complex hybrid of social compliance, relaxation, and suggestibility that can account for many esoteric behavioral manifestations.Nicholas Spanos states, "hypnotic procedures influence behavior indirectly by altering subjects' motivations, expectations and interpretations."Dissociation and neodissociation theories
Pierre Janet originally developed the idea of dissociation of consciousness as a result of his work with hysterical patients. He believed that hypnosis was an example of dissociation whereby areas of an individual's behavioral control are split off from ordinary awareness.Hypnosis would remove some control from the conscious mind and the individual would respond with autonomic, reflexive behavior.Weitzenhoffer describes hypnosis via this theory as "dissociation of awareness from the majority of sensory and even strictly neural events taking place."Neuropsychological theory of hypnosis
Anna Gosline says in a NewScientist. The team screened subjects before the study and chose 12 that were highly susceptible to hypnosis and 12 with low susceptibility. They all completed the task in the fMRI under normal conditions and then again under hypnosis.During their first task session, before hypnosis, there were no significant differences in brain activity between the groups. But under hypnosis, Gruzelier found that the highly susceptible subjects showed significantly more brain activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus than the weakly susceptible subjects. This area of the brain has been shown to respond to errors and evaluate emotional outcomes. This is an area involved with higher level cognitive processing and behaviour."Hypnosis as a conditioned process leading to sleep
Ivan Pavlov believed that hypnosis was a "partial sleep".He observed that the various degrees of hypnosis did not significantly differ physiologically from the waking state and hypnosis depended on insignificant changes of environmental stimuli.Pavlov also suggested that lower brain stem mechanisms were involved in hypnotic conditioning. As attention is focused and magnified, the hypnotist's words are gradually accepted without the subject carrying any conscious censorship of what is being said. This is not unlike the athlete listening to the last pieces of advice from a coach minutes before an important sport event; concentration filters out anything that is unimportant and magnifies what is said about what really matters for the subject. Thus, the object of the hypnotist is to use techniques to reduce the interference and increase the receptability of specific messages (suggestions). It takes and establishes the necessary organization of the nervous system into interacting subsystems. On that basis it develops a picture of hypnotic phenomena as involving not only increasing or decreasing of the activity of particular subsystems, but on their interaction. Please see the discussion on the talk page.December 2007)
Please do not remove this message until the dispute is resolved.Ambrose and Newbold (1980) consider the theoretical debate surrounding hypnosis theories to have been productive, especially in relation to distinguishing evidence based research from conjecture.Clinical studies
In 1996, the National Institutes of Health technology assessment panel judged hypnosis to be an effective intervention for alleviating pain from cancer and other chronic conditions.Brain imaging
One controlled scientific experiment postulates that hypnosis may alter our perception of conscious experience in a way not possible when people are not "hypnotized", at least in "highly hypnotizable" people. In this experiment, color perception was changed by hypnosis in "highly hypnotizable" people as determined by (PET) scans (Kosslyn et al.Stroop task performance between participants of low and high hypnotic susceptibility, at baseline and after hypnotic induction".Szechtman and his colleagues imaged the brain activity of eight very hypnotizable subjects who had been prescreened for their ability to hallucinate under hypnosis...General methods
The act of inducing hypnosis is referred to as an induction procedure. Many hypnotists associate hypnotic induction with a swinging pendulum, but there are many usable techniques. Most commonly, the hypnotist will use calming techniques designed to relax the subject by suggesting that their limbs are going limp, eyelids are getting heavy, etc.Relaxation is not a key factor, however, as hypnosis can also be induced during vigorous exercise.Rapid Induction (RI) can induce hypnosis in just seconds by combining the subject's anticipation with shocking the subject.Using RI is absolutely necessary for a stage hypnotist, as PR takes more time than a show audience is willing to wait.Hypnotic susceptibility is a measurable amount of responsiveness that one can have to hypnosis. There is little evidence linking susceptibility to intelligence or personality traits, but some research has linked hypnosis to the amount of imagination in subjects.Recent research suggests that highly hypnotizable people have high sensory and perceptual gating abilities that allow them to block some stimuli from awareness (Barnier, McConkey, and Wright, 2004).There is a common claim that no one can be hypnotized against his will. This lowering in inhibitions is called disinhibition and can sometimes be found in the hypnotized subject.Disinhibition leads the subject to performing acts that he would normally consider socially unacceptable or simply would not do.New research, developed by Board Certified Hypnotist Gerald Kein, has claimed that everybody is equally hypnotizable and "people accept hypnosis in direct relationship to the amount of fear they have".Successful hypnosis is attained by the removal of any inhibitory fear.Licensed mental health professionals are generally not trained in these techniques and use the old PR hypnotic induction developed in the 1940s (Kein, 1985).Common hypnosis phases
From "How to Create a Self Hypnosis Recording".Deepening
The deepening phase takes the subject from a very relaxed state into the fully "hypnotized" state, where conscious thinking is minimized.Purpose
If the purpose of the hypnosis session is amusement, then this phase is when the subjects are asked to say or perform things that will entertain the audience.Awakening
The awakening phase is when the subject is taken out of the hypnotic state. If the session is to try to alleviate insomnia, then the subject is encouraged to sleep, otherwise the subject is brought back to a state of awareness with the conscious mind fully reengaged.Focused attention
Some schools of thought hold that hypnosis as a state is very similar to other states of extreme concentration, where a person becomes oblivious to his or her surroundings while lost in thought.Often suggested as an example is highway hypnosis, when a driver suddenly finds his or her self much further down the road without any memory of driving the intervening distance. Some of these studies involve the Harvard scale, and Stanford scale.Hypnosis has been described as "suspension of the critical factor" which expands on the idea of "increased suggestibility".However, this still does not show the validity of hypnosis as a real state, as subjects carrying out role playing would likewise answer seemingly illogically if convinced that was the paradigm. It often appears as if the "hypnotized" participant accepts the authority of the "hypnotist" over his or her own experience.Richard Feynman describes this, in his memoir Surely You're Joking, Mr.The mechanism of this effect is, however, disputed. Some hypnotists would claim that this showed the difference between a deep and a shallow hypnotic trance, while skeptics would cite that such effects can be duplicated in other circumstances where an agent holds authority, such as the Milgram experiment.Because of the ability to achieve these effects through normal varieties of communication and circumstance, there is no scientific theory that supports the existence of hypnosis.Breuer's absent pupillary reflex sign
An objective sign of hypnosis can be observed by a pupillary reflex test, which demonstrates a response that is opposed to the normal physiological response. When subjects are in a profound hypnotic state, they are asked to remain in hypnosis and open their eyes. The esoteric publication Hypnotism, by Danish hypnotist Carl Septus, is an early reference work that notes the absent pupillary reflex sign. The hypnotist may use suggestion to keep the subject in hypnosis, but the hypnotist must avoid suggestions relating to eyes, visual focus, light, and the pupils' dilation or contraction.Hypnotherapy is a term to describe the use of hypnosis in a therapeutic context.Hyp in the UK) today earn a large portion of their money through the cessation of smoking (often in a single session) and the aid of weight loss (body sculpting). There is no evidence that 'incurable' diseases are curable with hypnosis (such as cancer, diabetes, and arthritis), but pain and other body functions related to the diseases are controllable. This is why forensic hypnosis is not widely used in many countries' legal systems. However, hypnosis therapy is frequently used by the public and there is no shortage of testimonial evidence of its helpfulness.Organizations promoting hypnosis
The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and British Society of Clinical Hypnosis are organizations that attempt to promote the use of hypnosis to treat a wider variety of physical and psychological ailments. The American society was founded by Milton Erickson, who was opposed to unlicensed professionals performing therapeutic hypnosis.Medical and dental application
One of the major initial applications of hypnosis was the suppression of pain during medical procedures.Educational applications
In a lecture to the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) during their annual conference at the State University Of New York, Dr.Milton Erickson taught the process of indirect hypnosis while Dr.Habbick spoke of his research on the use of hypnosis in enhancing learning and reducing anxiety.Habbick explained the use of a triad of suggestions: "(a) enhancing confidence, while (b) strengthening focused interest in the work and (c) improving energy to do the studying necessary."The results of his controlled research pointed the way toward the need to apply hypnosis especially with students having trouble studying.Hypnodermatology is the practice of treating skin diseases with hypnosis.Surgery
A study done at the Mt.Sinai School of Medicine looked at two groups of patients facing surgery for breast cancer. The group that received hypnosis prior to surgery reported less pain, nausea, and anxiety after surgery than the control group.Nash writes, in a 2001 article for Scientific American titled "The Truth and the Hype of Hypnosis", "using hypnosis, scientists have temporarily created hallucinations, compulsions, certain types of memory loss, false memories, and delusions in the laboratory so that these phenomena can be studied in a controlled environment."This led manufacturers to produce new brands of laundry detergent in competition with their own, existing brands, where the primary differences were in the product names, colors and shapes of designs on the packages, which were designed to appeal to women at different times of their menstrual cycles.Hypnotism has also received publicity about its use in Forensics, Sports, Education, and physical therapy and rehabilitation. This article or section may contain original research or unverified claims. Please improve the article by adding references.See the talk page for details.Wagstaff, of the University of Liverpool, carried out research around the phenomenon of stage hypnosis or hypnosis for entertainment.Wagstaff's work explores how a hypnotist will carefully choose volunteers from the audience, put them into a trance using hypnosis, and then plant suggestions for them to perform. The critical factor in any stage hypnosis show is the choice of enthusiastic and credulous individuals.Various techniques exist for discerning whether an individual is a likely candidate for a hypnosis stage act, showing a higher than normal susceptibility.Often, the sheer willingness of audience members to volunteer is a sign that they will cooperate with the hypnotist's suggestions during the show whether or not they actually become hypnotized in the first place. The hypnotist will use carefully selected terms in the initial call for volunteers.Stage hypnosis is a unique performance in that it involves real people from the audience responding in a variety of ways, making no two shows the same. There has been debate over the years as to whether some degree of fraud or collusion may be involved in some stage hypnosis acts.Often, people are simply unable to relax and go with the hypnotist's instructions due to an inability to relax and allow their minds to follow instructions without conscious thought or simply determination to not be induced. There are many behaviors that can be observed of those who "go under", such as slumping in their seat, head lolling to the side, falling into the lap of someone next to them, eye lids flickering, and an inability to wake when spoken to or prodded unless done so by the hypnotist himself. For those who are simply watching this show and seeing the person next to them become induced, it can be quite amazing to witness. The hypnotic state of a person performing on stage under supposedly the hypnotist control, is far different then a person seeking help to overcome habits, fears or stress management in a therapy environment. It is rarely used for the more complex or controversial uses of hypnosis, which require the hypnotist to monitor the hypnotized person's reactions and responses and respond accordingly. The LEDs stimulate the visual channel, while the headphones stimulate the audio channel with similar or slightly different frequencies designed to produce a certain mental state. The use of binaural beats in the audio is common; it is said to produce hypnosis more readily. It is a good idea to initially seek the skills of a practicing hypnotherapist in order to understand what it feels like to be in a hypnotic trance.Alternatively, a person may wish to use hypnosis recordings instead.Individuals can be trained in how to enter this walking hypnosis state. Many students learn how to use waking hypnosis in their classrooms so that all the information they receive is permanently embedded in their subconscious mind and can be accessed whenever needed.Waking hypnosis
This phenomenon, as expounded by Melvin Powers in 1955, involves altering the behaviour of a subject by suggestion without inducing a trance. In order to work, the subject must completely trust the source of the suggestion or be subconsciously convinced by a calm authoritative tone.Mass application
Influencing crowds through common longings and yearnings by a demagogue is called mass hypnosis.Generally, mass hypnosis is applied to religious sessions. Many forms of music and dance can be used to create religious trance.Indirect application
In addition to direct application of hypnosis (that is, treatment of conditions by means of hypnosis), there is also indirect application, wherein hypnosis is used to facilitate another procedure. Some people seem more able to display "enhanced functioning", such as the suppression of pain, while utilizing hypnosis.Robin Waterfield writes, in his 2002 book Hidden Depths: The Story of Hypnosis, "a person can act, some time later, on a suggestion seeded during the hypnotic session. When I touch you on the finger you will immediately be hypnotized.Possible dangers of hypnosis
Pratt et al.Clinical Hypnosis Primer, "A hypnotized patient will respond to a suggestion literally. They also mention:
From Kleinhauz and Beran, 1984:
"In one case, a woman had experienced 10 years of fatigue, irritability, and periods of childish behavior during which her perceptions were distorted. From Kleinhauz and Eli, 1987:
"In one case, a dentist using hypnorelaxation with a patient complied with her request to provide direction suggestions to stop smoking. From Machovec, 1987:
"A woman undergoing psychotherapy facilitated by hypnosis attempted to use the procedures she had learned to relieve her husband's dental pain.During the deepening technique of arm levitation, her husband's fingertips 'stuck' to his head, and a therapist had to intervene to end the trance state."False memory
False memory obtained via hypnosis has figured prominently in many investigations and court cases, including cases of alleged sexual abuse. There is no scientific way to prove that any of these recollections are completely accurate.Common misconceptions
The notion of hypnosis has elicited many presentations in popular culture.Due to the nature of belief in hypnosis, it's possible that popular beliefs regarding hypnosis actually influence the experience, reinforcing the beliefs. These beliefs are not generally based on scientific evidence, as there is no scientific consensus on whether mind control even exists. But there are people interested in research and funding to help work on controlling others and perfecting mind control techniques. These techniques can be researched with the scientific method and reasoning skills. This series has also been shown on other cable channels. In the pilot, Brown appears to use a simple verbal suggestion to manipulate a store clerk into accepting a plain piece of white paper as a twenty dollar bill.Additionally, he gets people to hand him their wallets and walk away from him.He emphasizes that he has no special personal powers and there is no proof that any of his magical "effects" actually employ hypnosis techniques at all.Hypnosis is caused by the hypnotist's power
Due to the stage hypnotist's showmanship and their perpetuated illusion of possessing mysterious abilities, hypnosis is often seen as caused by the hypnotist's power. The reality is the hypnotist has no power other than to offer suggestions which the subject or client may choose to respond to or not to respond to.In a stage hypnosis situation the hypnotist picks out people who appear extrovert and willing to put on a show.In other words the participants are persuaded to 'play along'.This gives the impression that the hypnotist has total control over them, which he does not.One is Unconscious and Unaware in Hypnosis
While the word hypnosis is derived from the Greek word for sleep, and many hypnotists still use the language of sleep and awake, hypnosis is not sleep. Some choose to think of this as a state of mind called "trance".Due to the popular but incorrect notion of hypnosis as mind control, some people believe that the ability to experience hypnosis is related to strength and soundness of mind.Overactive imagination
Another misconception in popular culture is that hypnosis is often the product of vivid imaginations and that hypnotic phenomena is merely imagined in the mind.Trance
It is a misconception that induction into hypnosis is time consuming and requires complete relaxation. It is possible to hypnotize a subject in just a few seconds by causing confusion, loss of equilibrium, misdirection, shock, and eye fixation.John Cerbone and Richard Nongard (2007) to describe this virtually instantaneous phenomenon.Variations of rapid inductions based on the Milton Erickson Handshake Interrupt and its use by Richard Bandler and practitioners of NLP have been widely taught.Teller, took a skeptical look at hypnosis in one of their episodes.Penn and Teller also state that the unusual behaviors people exhibit during a hypnosis session have always been well within their reach.Paramount syndicated television show The Montel Williams Show, featured a presentation by Hypnotist The Incredible Boris Cherniak where hypnotized subjects reacted to a variety of comical situations, while at the same time showcasing the therapeutic effects of hypnosis such as quitting smoking. The British car show Top Gear featured one of the presenters, Richard Hammond, getting hypnotized.Once hypnotized, he manifested a number of personality and mental changes, including not remembering how to drive a car, and thinking that a miniature child's version of a Porsche 911 was his own car, and attempting to drive it around in the studio. In the 2001 movie Zoolander Derek Zoolander is hypnotized to the song 'Relax' by Mugatu to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The internet website YouTube has become a popular forum for learning techniques associated with both clinical hypnosis and stage hypnosis. It has also brought about the phenomena of "street" hypnosis.Several songs are named after hypnosis. These include "Hypnotized" by Fleetwood Mac, "Hypnotize" by System of a Down, The Notorious B.G, and The White Stripes, "Mass Hypnosis" by Sepultura, "Hypnotized" by Heathen, Hypnotic Suggestion EP by The Apples in Stereo and also "Are You A Hypnotist??"In a later episode, he is shown to have his own popular television show, "Everybody Loves Hypnotoad".Doctor Who, the recurring Time Lord villain the Master will sometimes use hypnosis to is a procedure during which a health professional or researcher suggests that a
client, patient, or subject experience changes in sensations, perceptions,
thoughts, or behavior. The hypnotic context is generally established by an
induction procedure.People respond to hypnosis in different ways.Others describe hypnosis as a normal state of
focused attention, in which they feel very calm and relaxed.Regardless of how
and to what degree they respond, most people describe the experience as very
pleasant. Some people are very responsive to hypnotic suggestions and others
are less responsive.Contrary to some depictions of hypnosis in books, movies or on television,
people who have been hypnotized do not lose control over their behavior. They
typically remain aware of who they are and where they are, and unless amnesia
has been specifically suggested, they usually remember what transpired during
hypnosis.Hypnosis makes it easier for people to experience suggestions, but it
does not force them to have these experiences.Psychological Hypnosis: A Bulletin of Division 30,
2, p.Although scientists have
different theories about the nature of hypnosis, all seem to agree that
hypnotized people report changes in the way they feel, think, and behave, and
that these changes are in response to suggestions.Scientists disagree about whether hypnosis involves a special mental state. On the other hand, many scientists
believe that the facts of hypnosis and what one can do with hypnosis can be
explained without using the term 'state. For more information, search the
Database for words such as Theory, State, Expectancy, Dissociation. Most people are average in hypnotizability and are sufficiently
responsive to use hypnosis in medical, dental, or psychological therapy.People
who are low in hypnotizability often can improve in their response to
suggestions with training and practice, and thereby use hypnosis to work on
their problems. Many clinical uses of hypnosis do not require very high
hypnotizability.HYPNOTIZABILITY
SCALES or tests
measure a person's ability to respond to suggestions following a hypnotic
induction. Most require a trained hypnotist to read a script consisting of a
hypnotic induction, followed by a series of test suggestions that range in
level of difficulty. Most people respond to some but not all of the
suggestions, just as they would have correct responses to some but not all of
the test items on an intelligence test. For more information, search the
Database for Test and Hypnotizability.SUGGESTIBILITY
is related to hypnotizability, and is usually taken to mean the ability to
respond to suggestions without a prior hypnotic induction. It is a scientific
concept and does not have any connotation of a weak will. The decision to use hypnosis as an adjunct to treatment
can only be made in consultation with a qualified health care provider who has
been trained in the use and limitations of clinical hypnosis.Psychological Hypnosis: A Bulletin of Division 30,

ETHICAL PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Various professional
organizations follow the general principal that hypnotists should use hypnosis
only in the areas of their competence, and in their own particular field of
education and training (psychology, dentistry, medicine, social work, marriage
and family therapy, nursing).Obviously, if a
person is not licensed for professional practice in one of the health care
professions, they do not meet these standards.Hypnosis
is not a type of therapy, like psychoanalysis or behavior therapy.Instead, it
is a procedure that can be used to facilitate therapy.Because it is not a treatment
in and of itself, training in hypnosis is not sufficient for the conduct of
therapy.Clinical hypnosis should be used only by properly trained and
credentialed health care professionals .Psychological Hypnosis:
A Bulletin of Division 30, 2, p.Members may seek to broaden the usefulness of
hypnosis in their professional field in the interest of individual patients as
well as in the interests of extending the professional and scientific knowledge
of hypnosis. The hypnotist should inform you about the kind of
hypnosis treatment you will receive and obtain your consent to treatment. The hypnotist should be willing to communicate with
other health professionals involved in your care.Your treatment should be confidential with the
hypnotist. The hypnotist should respect your rights and dignity,
and should not engage in sexual intimacies with you.STANDARDS FOR
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
It is clear that education,
training, and access to professional review and consultation mark the
responsible professional use of hypnosis.Education and training involve two components.First, the person should have a graduate degree and be professionally
credentialed to diagnose and treat the particular problem in a number of ways
(e.Different professional organizations
world wide have different criteria for what constitutes sufficient clinical
training in hypnosis. But it is fair to say that most, if not all, agree that
there should be a didactic component (information about hypnosis grounded in
science), an experiential component (practice using hypnosis, guided and
observed by experts), and a supervisory component for a period of time
(consultation with an established expert about ongoing clinical use of hypnosis
with patients).Organizations
Do Professionals Using Hypnosis Belong To?Kenneth Bowers' paperback, Hypnosis
for the Seriously Curious, reissued in 1993 by W.Avenue FL 6, New York, N.When I was a kid, my family doctor was a hypnotist. That story had a big impact on me.When I was in my early twenties, I enrolled in the Pierre Clement School of Hypnosis in San Francisco. And I figured maybe it could help with dating. The Pierre Clement School of Hypnosis is named after a notable and long dead hypnotist. At the time, it consisted of one instructor and a small room where the eight or ten of us met twice a week, at night for a few hours, for maybe ten weeks. It was something like that.An important part of the process involves being hypnotized yourself, and watching others being hypnotized.Let me stop here and give you some facts about hypnosis. The subject has all of his regular faculties operating plus he gains some more, if he has no objection to those new powers. For example, a subject under hypnosis would get a little extra power in one or more of these areas:
1.In my experience, every person can be hypnotized, at least to the degree of getting some of those extra powers. For them, hypnosis can fix a lot of problems. For the rest of the world, hypnosis can be a great way to relax, which has lots of health benefits. And it can help focus on good habits and away from bad ones. For example, it can help some people with minor phobias and bad habits.People who use hypnosis to quit smoking and quit overeating have about the same success as people who use other methods.Hypnosis can only help you do what you want to do.If you want a cigarette more than you want to quit, hypnosis is useless. So is every other method. And if you want to quit more than you want to smoke, almost any method, including hypnosis, can make that quitting feel easier.Sometimes the meek will be concerned that the hypnotist will turn them into zombies. It feels a bit like being pampered. You might be wondering if the subjects are really actors and the whole thing is fixed. Our homework in hypnosis class involved finding subjects to hypnotize for practice. We learned you should charge for your service because it makes you more credible and makes the hypnosis easier.Everyone was a Viking or a French peasant or something easy to describe.Hypnosis does mess with memories. That has more to do with the fragility of memory than with the power of hypnosis. The power of hypnosis, for me, was in understanding how easily people can confuse the imagined with the real.So on a scale of dangerous imaginary things, hypnosis is somewhere closer to advertising, well below peer pressure, nowhere near religion. He was a skilled hypnotist, although it was unclear how much was from training and how much was natural.Hypnosis is done entirely with choice of words.Half of the process of hypnosis is performed before the subject knows you started. The second goal of the pretalk is to convey your certainty that the hypnosis will work. You want to relax the subject, and you want to show them the connection between your words and the changes they feel. There are a variety of methods for hypnosis. My objective is to convince the subject that something happened with their eyes because of something I said.Imagination merges with reality.Anyone will want to blink more often if you call attention to their rate of blinking.Hypnosis is an extension of that process.Next comes the wordy part of the induction. From there, they float onto an escalator, then an elevator, and then I ask them to see a floating pendulum. You would have to be a gifted actor to pretend to be hypnotized. And breathing becomes slow and regular.Almost everyone can experience the floating arm under hypnosis. They are clearly more relaxed toward twenty, and visibly more awake toward one.The people who experience the phenomena might take fewer. To end the session, I suggest that when I count to zero the subject will awake and feel refreshed and happy and have a great day.You go beyond the obvious stuff like crossed arms and who is leaning toward whom, and see meaning in everything from skin tone, to breathing, to pupil dilation, and even choice of words.Never lie to a trained hypnotist. The other super power you get from being a hypnotist is the knowledge of how to weave it into your normal life. For example, Dilbert is designed using tricks I learned from hypnosis. The reason Dilbert has no last name, and the boss has no name, and the company has no name, and the town has no name is because of my hypnosis training. But the best super power that hypnosis gives you is a different world view.Nothing in this life makes sense if you assume people are rational most of the time. While hypnosis can't make a person do what he doesn't want to do, sometimes it can change what he thinks he wants, just as advertising and peer pressure do.It's not magic, but you shouldn't underestimate its power.I'm a special education high school teacher and a hypnotherapist. However, hypnosis as a therapeutic tool for helping children has been overlooked in your article. Many of my clients bring their children to me for hypnosis so their children my gain a better understanding of the motivating behaviors in their subconscious.Once a child understands the functioning of the subconscious, they do not have to deal with negative results of childhood trauma, when they grow up.Hello Scott,
Did you try hypnosis to overcome your adductor dystonia laryngitis?Very interesting and a great post!Hypnosis is an amazing tool that is a cross between a science and an art!Hello, I am a student in North Carolina and I am currently writing a research paper about hypnosis. If you are interested, please reply back via email. There are so many misguided people who think that hypnosis is snake oil or worse. There are so many misguided people who think that hypnosis is snake oil or worse. You did a wonderful service to all by explaining the misconceptions that people have about hypnosis. Also, a very good example of how hypnosis is induced. If anyone is looking to try hypnosis, we offer a number of Free Hypnosis CDs.Hi Scott,
I really like this article.Since you are interested in hypnosis, you may want to check out hypnotize.Hypnosis, Mind Control,Hypnotherapy,NLP,Psychology and related topics.Videos, scripts or just Pictures. It contains powerful Web 2.This may be one of the most succinct yet detailed posts I've seen on the subject of hypnosis. It brought a smile on my face WHAT can make you start going into a theme like hypnosis.Did it finally work out? This is one reason i find self hypnosis difficult. It requires a lot of visualizing. The part about past lives is especially relevant as this is also the reason why hypnosis is not good for accurate memory retrieval of ANY kind.Hypnosis can be an incredibly powerful tool in helping you achieve whatever you want to do.Watch the master perform...I'm not sure when you studied hypnosis, but there's a lot of science to understanding it nowadays. With the advent of brain imaging, activity in the brain of the hypnotized person can be fairly well identified. There are other methods of induction, though, that use little or no imagination.By the way, animals can be induced into an extremely relaxed state and offered the ealiest form of stage hypnosis for entertainment. With other techniques, though, I can be a "lucky bastard."Very interesting but I disagree about the people participating in a stage show being the ones with the phenomena, as you put it.So this means that a very high percentage of people "have the phenomena', much more than 1 in 5.Hypnosis is something I badly want to experience because I am so curious about it and after seeing it done to others, I can't seem to function well for the next day or two because all I think about is "Why didn't it happen to me" and "What are those people really experiencing?".I've also watched internet videos and listened to audio on the internet and nothing has ever happened. The only thing I haven't tried is a one on one session, but I finally have one scheduled very soon, so we will see if I truly can be hypnotized.I've noticed that there is some different opinions on whether or not everyone can be hypnotized. So there are some disagreements among professionals, right. The process described is incredibly similar to the technique of 'Yoganidra' that people practising Yoga can use for relaxation. But of course, this is only a small part of Yoga, and there is much more to it than what you have described under hypnotism. Some years ago, her therapist thought it would be helpful to hypnotize her, to help her get past some stuff in her past. And stayed that way, out of hypnosis, for a couple of days.Ever since this experience, I've looked at hypnosis as misunderstood, and potentially dangerous.About hypnosis helping with dates is really really true.Weirdly, on few occasions just mentioning some interest in hypnosis has some insecure women hanging on your words as if they already chose to be hypnotized, while you really haven't done anything yet to make it happen..I'm that good looking, who knows..Scott,
You are Damn good. How could you put it so beautifully about a topic like hypnosis.Has any research been done in this area?Assuming that "Never lie to a trained hypnotist."Then you might be UNBEATABLE in a Poker tournament!!!With money, who cares about charms to help dating. No offense but u called yur mom a lucky bastard!Scott Adams hypnosis cult.It was really surprising how different the process works from how pop culture leads you to believe it would.Until you've seen someone go under, then done it yourself, it is all just a show. That was a fascinating read.No more anxiety, no more nervousness. It was the strangest thing.Since then I've been anxious again. It's unfortunate that it took something so drastic to set me straight, but it finally happened.Does this make any sense? When done on stage in front of an audience, it seems to be some sort of hoax or carnival side show trick, but when done by a trained mental health professional, it's anything but. It's a very powerful tool for focusing and training your mind, and you would never do something that was suggested under hypnosis that you weren't already open to.She remembered this under hypnosis, and of course if it were a memory that was 'planted' there by the hypnotist then the illusion of 'remembering' it would only last until her parents told her that they had never been to Austria."False memories can be so vivid that the subject would decide her parents were lying to her. There have been studies (from what I have read) that induced memories seem very real. But for the really susceptible people, couldn't you hypnotize them to believe that a suicidal action action is safe? That there is a bridge over this hole here? That the bottle of bleach under the sink is a delicious ice cream?Scott, you write like someone that has an inmense confidence in yourself. You write about the inners of what makes you a great cartoonist.Scott:
I am a certified instructor with the National Guild of Hypnotists. It's refreshing to have someone present such a balanced, accurate article on hypnosis.Do you ever use the Elman induction?I've tried 2 different hypnotists in the past, but with both of them I felt like I was "faking it", lifting my hand because they asked and I wanted to keep things moving, not because it floated up.Rowling or Tom Clancy were my hypnotist I'd have better results. His use of observation in hypnotherapy and his positive view of the unconscious mind are most enlightening. The foundation named for him still provides wonderful training opportunities. In your opinion, Uncle Scott, is Derren Brown doing hypnosis, or something else, particularly in "The Heist" episode where a few of his subjects end up robbing an armored car at gun point, and in "Photo Booth Hypnosis" where he gets a guy from London to Marrakech without him waking up?Hypnosis transformed my love life.Catholic High School in Washington, DC, and during our Junior year we were required to go on a "retreat" with the Christian Brothers (nothing morbid or perverted coming)....Imagine yourself walking through a forest. There is a danger, you can implant false memories that never happened. You only have to look at the cases were families were wrecked by someone who under hypnosis "discovered" that a relative or father raped them.My cousin remembered a trip to Austria she took with her parents as a little child. She remembered this under hypnosis, and of course if it were a memory that was "planted" there by the hypnotist then the illusion of "remembering" it would only last until her parents told her that they had never been to Austria.Could this be a case of hypnosis increasing the power to "focus"?How do you come out of Hypnosis? In one example, I've seen someone hypnotised and given a bucket of water. They were then told if they saw someone on fire, they should not panic but simply throw the bucket of water on the person to put out the flames. Then (of course) they were told that a particular audience member was on fire.If you don't believe me, pick a random politician and try it.Surely, then, it is clearly possible to convince someone to commit at least that crime by hypnosis. If you can give a bucket of water to a person under hypnosis and convince them to dump it on a random person (because you are told that they are on fire) surely you could give the person under hypnosis a gun and tell them it is a water pistol, and that they are playing a water pistol game with the audience member.Very soon you won't feel the discomfort of that massive wallet in your pocket. The one you'll mail later today when the sun is shining and the birds are singing.Free your mind and your heart will follow. The birds will sing for that too, maybe where the sun doesn't shine.Just keep your eyes closed and think about all the nice things you could do when you're more in tune with the sunshine and singing birds.Hell, if hypnosis helps with dates, then sign me up for it!See David Spiegel's work at Stanford regarding metastatic breast cancer. The hypnosis group on average lived 18 months longer than the control group.Gottheil E
Effect of psychosocial treatment on survival of patients with metastatic breast cancer. But for the few of us who practice "clinical hypnosis" within family practice I assure you it is rewarding. What you could do to convince the public in one Sunday strip would take us physicians years. We have cocaine that can be used as a perfectly good topical nasal anesthetic, but it can also be abused for fun and frolic.Hypnosis is quite similar; it is a powerful medical tool in medical hands and a potential problem in the wrong hands. It is about time the public gets a proper education on how hypnosis can help them and stop the chicken quaking stories.Thank you for your Blog! You know how they always have those things where a great hypnotist comes to town to hypnotise people into losing weight or quitting smoking and so on?From what you've said then these are perhaps more real than I had thought, but still scams.Yes, real hypnosis might be going on, but it will probably require more than one session, and at least up to 5, to create a change in that person's life as a result of the hypnosis even if the person does want to change. So all that money people pay to go is not well spent. It may depend on the exact definition. They did have research showing that belief in hypnosis was not a factor in being able to be hypnotised. You could believe in it and not have it happen or vice versa. So on a scale of dangerous imaginary things, hypnosis is somewhere closer to advertising, well below peer pressure, nowhere near religion."No one blames science for Nazi killing of handicapped people although they tried using social Darwinism to justify it.So just as there is such a thing as responsible science, there is such a thing as responsible religion. So if a person's mindset can be altered with hypnosis, even subtly, and they volunteer for it.It is the clearest explanation of hypnosis I have ever seen.Any tips on finding a qualified hypnosis instructor?I'm going to be a teacher, so besides the obvious benefits of the "super powers", I think it could help me tremendously. My Nana had talked me into going out with them for this hypnotists show a few days earlier, I was absolutely shattered on the night but couldn't talk my way out of it because she was so excited about going. When he 'woke me up' again I was Sooooo not tired anymore, I was buzzing and raring to go, so much so I was almost manic according to my friends.Methinks that must make me one of the 'lucky bastards' you describe. You feel like taking your clothes off....It's so hot in here even your underwear is making you too hot...This reminds me of a quote from Men in Black:
J: Why the big secret?People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.Get good at spotting a liar.Scott,
Can you recommend how to find a quality hypnosis school for anybody who is interested in learning about hypnosis? He went off to his car to get peace and quiet to try it.When he came back he said, "I don't think it worked, I fell asleep"!When I asked if he felt rested and energised, he admitted that he was but maintained it was because he had slept, not because of anything else...Thank you for writing it.Now you're dispensing hypnotism lessons.Scott, you're starting your own cult, aren't you?You wiiiilllll come over to my place....You wiiiilllll come over to my place....But it seems like you have a tendency to figure things out, and then say, "OK, figured that out," and shine it up and place it in a box in your head with a little square label, and never touch it again.Do any of the things you figure out come up for review?By the way I noticed that about evangelistas and thought so too.The 'cadence' of their voices."But the best super power that hypnosis gives you is a different world view.Awesome post Scott, and I didn't mind the length at all.But I've never ever been so relaxed in my life and it was awesome. The suggestion he gave me that I would want to go jogging upon waking up in the morning (and would feel great afterward) seemed hilarious to me.But I did it anyway when I woke up because I didn't want him to know I was 'faking' that I was actually hypnotized the night before. And I really did feel great afterward.Best post I ever read on your blog.My high school's "Project Grad" graduation party hired a stage hypnotist.Of that group, one did not become hypnotized, and one became too relaxed by the hypnosis.Everyone else were acting pretty funny though.Hi Scott,
Long time reader and never commented before, but this was post was great.Very well written, particularly in comparission to a wikipedia article on the same subject. And so, armed with this new information, I'm going to go and get hypnotised to help me give up smoking. So as a thanks for the compliments in your earlier post:
You may well have saved me from a horrible smoking related death, and for that you are a great person."One must give him his due.He has considerably
cretinised me.That hypnosis stuff sounds very helpful, I think I'll give it a shot. What's the deal with the people who can't handle the length of the post? Those things are much longer than this.I've only been reading this blog a few months but if you haven't already I'd like to know why you blog!Long post, but to some extent, even just reading it worked. This really makes me want to try it.Scott,
Thanks for the interesting post.I'm noticing parallels to techniques of hypnosis you mention and I'd be curious to know what your opinion on what connection there might be between the two disciplines, if any.I'm not sure how acquainted with music you are, as you haven't mentioned it much on this blog.It is so easy to blame one's affiliations and memberships for the actions of the individual.Of course, it is not as easy to consider the millions of people whose lives are benefitted by their affiliations and memberships because it is difficult to report on humility, basic kindness, and general honesty.Certainly there should be more rational and critical thinking in organized religions, and other groups. That was pretty darn cool...Now I need to stop blinking and yawning...My wife gave birth to our third child under hypnosis, and it was amazing. But she was fine the whole time, with no drugs.Compared to the first delivery where she was doped up and groggy, and the second 'natural' birth with it's extreme agony, this was a cakewalk. If they were ever at another show of his they would automatically come up to the stage upon hearing it.No matter how many years had passed.Be curious to know how feasible that is.Sounds like being hypnotized could be a neat experience.Ferenc Puskas, the great Hungarian soccer player, into believing in magic which in turn led me to create the Lovin'Spoonful jug band which is why even to this day whenever I hear the opening chords to "Daydream" I immediately run outside and score an amazing goal while singing the Hungarian National Anthem. Some things just happen like that. Thanks for the information and insight into the power of compliments and the subject of hypnosis. Thanks for the interesting read on hypnosis. The second time I sought hypnosis was in a brilliant doctor's office. He actually taped the session for me.At the end of the tape, you can hear me exclaim "it worked!"Do you think the success rate has something to do with desire? You have redeemed yourself.Your powers of hypnosis have worked on many of your blog readers. And you're awesome, as you must surely already know."For example, Dilbert is designed using tricks I learned from hypnosis. The reason Dilbert has no last name, and the boss has no name, and the company has no name, and the town has no name is because of my hypnosis training."It made an excellent read.Maybe their 'anger' at the UK was actually 'planted' in their heads over numerous hypnosis sessions at the local mosque or something, what say?Really, it is the art of interfacing with your subject so intently that they cannot differentiate you from themselves. When you come across taboos or strong mental blocks, the subject will break from the hypnosis. So the televangelist that you watched used hypnosis (broadly), as well as religion, peer pressure, and propoganda to get past those blocks.Since hypnosis by itself cannot cause the subject to perform an action the subject normally wouldn't, based on your experience with moist robots, can it provide the tools to do so?Google New about a notable university (Stanford, Brown, Yale, etc.You have to be careful with it.I've said this before, but...CDs for the past several weeks and have found them very helpful.Hypnotist taking a crack at me either.I've got nothing to fear or lose by giving it a go; just haven't run across one yet.Not that you've hypnotized me or anything...I'm just wondering, if it is possible to hypnotise animals like pet dog?To those who have posted about the difference between affect and effect:
As a verb, affect means to somehow change, or act on an object. On the other hand, a lot of smart people still do typos, so it could be a typo.Unless you are making fun of us.My grandmother on my mother's side was a psychologist who practiced hypnotherapy. Many of her patients were entertainers who were trying to get over stage fright or trying to improve their performance (her apartment was across the street from Lincoln Center in NYC).If Dogbert found that hypnosis could really make people into
zombie slaves, what would he do?He would tell everyone he
knew that you can't use hypnosis to turn someone into a zombie
slave. So, all hypnotists will tell you that hypnosis does
not give you control over the subject? He's done many 'feats' the really make you question free will. Thanks for taking the time to communicate all of this to us.That's a great point that to play to people's imaginations, leave room for them to fill in their own details.Teller's opinion of hypnotism (hint: they featured it on their show "Bullshit!"Is it possible to hypnotize someone so that they believe they are a cat?Somehow I doubt that it's that simple. It definitely explains why you are such a control freak, and think you are superior to others. You actually believe that you are the puppeteer of the world. The fact that people give you huge sums of money to put other people's ideas into badly drawn cartoons only reinforces your world view.It also makes clear why you never feel compelled to back up any of your views with evidence.Great post, and yesterday's.Self hypnosis is also a great way to get better service from your dentist. The hard part is when he then decides that you're so relaxed you want to hear jokes and chat about his life.Ok, now you just need to figure out a way to hypnotize people and suggest that they come into your restaurant. Some people won't read it because it's so long, but I loved the whole piece. You are falling under my spell...You have been tagged with the 7 Things Meme.Once more, a brilliant post.Learning hypnosis only makes it easier to go under. You can lie under hypnosis if you choose to.When I can't sleep due to too many problems I imagine I can push my problems to the top of my head and compress them. After a while it worked, a little shakily at first, but my finger did lift up from my lap.The whole time a conscious part of my mind was observing how I felt and questioning whether it was 'real'.Perhaps there's no difference.Hypnotherapy tends to be expensive. It's a lot of money just to have someone talk to you, even if it is effective. This reminds me of a hypnosis session about 20 years ago.It wasn't me, but it was my mother. She went on stage with David Copperfield and he hypnotized her.Of course, she was horrified afterwards. My husband and I took a class in Hypnobirthing before the birth of our first child. We both were immediately able to fall asleep more easily and sleep more deeply.Powerful thing, the mind!I'm kind of tired from not sleeping well last night, your blog was so relaxing. As an amateur hypnotist (I might do some stage work soon), I found what you had to say fascinating.Well I just have to say this isn't what I've found, even though I am just an amateur and so not fantastically skilled I can always show a subject no matter who they are the strength of some simple suggestions; such as the arms feeling lighter as you mentioned, and more impressive tricks like making hands be stuck together until I release them.Especially things like therapeutic hypnosis, which is really easy, if you do it right. What you SHOULD do is link smoking with something negative, trigger some unpleasant taste or smell to smoking, and soon the subject will find smoking distasteful without you needing to give any direct suggestion. As you probably well know, you don't need to relax, and the relaxation is simply a process of hypnotic suggestion in itself; the only reasons that people seem easier to hypnotise when they are in this state are that A: they have got used to listening (and doing) to what you say, so your suggestions are followed more closely, and B: they believe in hypnosis more strongly if the stereotypical trace stuff has been done, and belief as you said is the lifeblood of hypnosis.Anyway thank you very much for this post, I must agree with what you said earlier that learning hypnosis is really quite a life changing experience. Most of us fell asleep during the 15 mins of it.And it used to happen every day.Klagg

my soul of spartan five years old!Africa who has had remarkable success with hypnosis and working with people's problems, phobias, and relationships. The process puts a person in touch with the real "self", whatever that is.Part of her success has been the unorthodox training she has had and some discoveries about hypnosis and how memories are stored and how we access them.According to her (and my own experience in one of her sessions) is that memories are stored as or in conjunction with a physical sensation. If the person can recall exactly how they felt at the point of trauma or whatever the issue is then they are able to review the experience and "reprogram" or "undemonize" it, This has worked for smokers, drinkers, people who tend toward suicide, people in destructive relationships, really anything. In conjunction with that line of thought, are the effects of Uri Geller, though I don't want to use words to create create a concept of whatever "it" or "they" might be.This "effect" (in his case it was bending silverware by gently rubbing) was proven to work by me in my early twenties, though I can't recall how to do it anymore, and my friend has a spoon impossibly bent in precisely the same manner in front of her by a fellow in his 40's she met in Toronto at a party she was giving some time ago.She still has this spoon and it is one of her prize possessions, and seeing it on occassion reminds me that what I did was real and not imagined.Instead, we are programed to believe in all sorts of crazy stuff by people who they themselves are led around by all sorts of learned and programmed perverted desires of pleasure, power, greed, or whatever. How much better would the world be if we could jump past this baloney that we have learned or cloned into us in order to be a contributing member of a "functional and creative society".After a lot of soul searching however and seeing where others are in "evolution" that the demonstration of such healing in oneself could be a place where the population at large is entirely unready for, and might be best left alone, at least for the time being for the sake of what is left of the safeguards in place preventing the large percentage of people from manifesting the evil that they actually feel and act out in their hearts. Is it because someone cut them off?Or is is because after they were cut off that they descriptively named the person cutting them off? This process happened one at a time until now almost all the freeways are filled with an extraordinary number of people who have accepted that "common name" as their own who act out what the name actually means.Hypnosis by any other name still smells as stinky. You are a true Renaissance man. What subject will you next dazzle us with your depth of understanding?Did he get laid more knowing hypnosis?Forgive us but it is hard to take the animal urges out of the human creature. This post has made me want to dig deeper into hypnosis and possibly take a class. You're way too smart to confuse "affect" with "effect" though.Or maybe my mastery of the two terms is not as great as I thought.Or you hypnotized me to see the opposite word of what should be there.Tone of voice can control a person.Memory can be retrieved, if done carefully. Not "What are you wearing?"Then watch them flail when you tell them to test this. It's amazing to see every muscle twitching, except those in the arm that is NOT Moving.Clement Hypnosis Center was a state of California approved school and one of the oldest and most prestigious in the United States.Pierre Clement passed away.Hypnosis actually can improve memory recall, according to the TV show "Mythbusters."They show a group of people remembering more details about an event after hypnosis.Further, it is easy to believe that being in a relaxed state would improve your memory recall abilities.Derren Brown's book "Tricks of the Mind", which draws the parallel between religion and hypnosis, among other many other topics.I'm not sure if you can get it in the states though. It's just barely plausible that "affect" is used properly in this post, but you would have almost certainly noted the very rare usage.Hypnotize yourself and fix the difference between "effect" (what you want 99.Man, that was a long post. But one thing you didn't cover was speed hypnotism. My doctor claims that Margaret Thatcher, the former British prime minister, used self hypnosis between long meetings. This alledgedly kept her fresh while the union leaders that she was negotiating with ended up being exhausted by the extreme stress and lack of sleep.Thatcher using this trick.Any info greatly appreciated! The hypnotist convinced me that I was floating in water and that I would wake up when I went over a waterfall.Would you be able to make someone with suicidal tendencies kill themselves? What would happen if you hypnotize someone, and once that person is 'under', just walk away?Would he remain in that state till you come back and 'revive' him?One of your best blog posts to date, Scott.Your post has generated some interest in hypnosis within this reader.I've always wondered about hypnosis. This was very interesting. That was a loooong post, Scott. So long that it almost put me to sleep.Hi Scott, thanks for sharing your insights on Hypnosis with us!Perhaps you would be so kind as to also share your insights on dating, and whether hypnosis helped in any way at all...BTW, wasn't hypnosis guilty for "remembering" many child abuse? This makes a lot of sense but I couldn't help chuckling because it made me think of a job I had delivering coffee in the early 80s.One of my customers was a small hypnosis office in Shrewsbury, MA.But I don't hold it against people, it just puts me on guardr about the sincerity level of anything they say.Does understanding how hypnosis works make it harder to be hypnotised? Can you (Scott Adams) still be hypnotised? My stat professor claimed he learned hypnosis simply by reading books on it.And I think I had a religious hypnosis experiance, though I didn't recognize it at the time. The entry on hypnosis was highly enlightening. Can someone "under" utter lies? The mind, and our memories are highly fragile,I totally agree.Even more amazing is our ability to quickly overcome the shock of strange new situations.Apparently, THAT is something we don't need hypnosis for!You haven't mentioned anything about the technique of interrupting a natural process, thereby causing the brain to go into the hypnotic state.Or is that just bollocks? When I was in grad school, I saw a hypnotist do a show at the local mall. Then I went to the university library and checked out 5 or 6 books on hypnotism all of which were published in the very early 1900's.In these subjects I could induce positive hallucinations (having them see something that wasn't there). Some never got past this stage ..But then I had a woman who started to panic when she couldn't stand.KNOWING that hypnosis does what it does (SEEING it ..EASY it is) definitely changes your world view in certain ways. They seemed a little dazed but no too terribly upset over their erstwhile exhibitions of lust. Why Scott,
