The 40th Anniversary of Jethro Tull is upon us in February 2008.But it would hardly be appropriate for old Sourpuss and his cohorts to give too much credence to birthday bashes in this sense.Watch for rock.Developing their own style 1.Band member history 3 In popular culture 4 Lineups 5 Discography 5.Origins Ian Anderson's first band, started in 1963 in Blackpool, was known as The Blades. The band moved to the London area in search of more bookings, basing themselves in nearby Luton. This name stuck simply by virtue of the fact that they were using it the first time a club manager (namely, John Gee of the Marquee Club, London) liked their show enough to invite them to return."Sunshine Day" on which the band's name was misspelled "Jethro Toe", making it a collector's item), they released the bluesy album This Was in 1968.Following this album, Abrahams left and formed his own band, Blodwyn Pig.There were a number of reasons for his departure: he was a blues purist, while Anderson wanted to branch out into other forms of music; Abrahams and Cornick did not get along; and Abrahams was unwilling to travel internationally or play more than three nights a week, while the others wanted to be successful by playing as often as possible and building an international fan base.Black Sabbath after the performance.Developing their own style After auditions for a replacement guitarist, Anderson chose Martin Barre, a former member of Motivation, Penny Peeps, and Gethsemane, who was playing with Noel Redding's Fat Mattress at the time.Barre impressed Anderson with his persistence more than anything else: he was so nervous at his first audition that he could hardly play at all, and then showed up for a second audition without a cord to connect his guitar to an amplifier.Bassist Cornick left following Benefit, replaced by Jeffrey Hammond, a childhood friend of Anderson whose name appeared in the songs "A Song for Jeffrey", "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square", "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey, and Me", and who also is the writer and narrator of "The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles" featured in the A Passion Play album.Hammond", but the extra "Hammond" was an inside joke regarding the fact that Hammond's mother's maiden name was also "Hammond", no relation to his father.Though consisting of distinct tracks, there is a common narrative thread leading some to label it as a concept album.Him resurrected from the grave..."In contrast, the gentle acoustic "Wond'ring Aloud" is a love song. The title track and "Locomotive Breath" remain staples of US classic rock stations and, to this day, are rarely left out of Tull's live act.Thick as a Brick concept album.Because of the heavy touring schedule and his wish to spend more time with his family, drummer Bunker left the band after the Aqualung album, and was replaced by Barriemore Barlow in early 1971.Barlow first recorded with the band for the EP Life Is a Long Song and made his first appearance on a Jethro Tull album with 1972's Thick as a Brick.LP, with a number of movements melded together and some repeating themes.Thick as a Brick was the first true prog rock offering by the band, as well as the first Jethro Tull album to reach number one on the (U.Fans regard the album as arguably the band's best compilation.Years of Jethro Tull boxed set, and the complete sessions were finally released on the 1993 compilation Nightcap, with the contemporarily overdubbed flute lines where the vocal parts were missing.Around this time, the band's popularity with critics began to wane, but their popularity with the public remained strong.War Child, an album originally intended to be a companion piece for a film, reached number two on the Billboard charts and received some critical acclaim, and produced the radio mainstays "Bungle in the Jungle" and "Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of the New Day)".Written and recorded during Anderson's divorce from his first wife Jenny, the album is characterised by introspective, cynical, and sometimes bitter lyrics.Following this album, bassist Hammond left the band, retiring from music altogether to pursue painting (which had always been his intention).Carmen, a support band on the previous Jethro Tull tour, was tabbed as the band's new bassist.Although not formally considered a part of the folk rock movement (which had actually begun nearly a decade earlier with the advent of Fairport Convention), there was clearly an exchange of musical ideas among Tull and the folk rockers. Also, by this time Anderson had moved to a farm in the countryside, and his new bucolic lifestyle was clearly reflected on these albums.Entitled Bursting Out it featured dynamic live performances from the lineup that many Tull fans consider comprising the golden era of the band.Did you give it a good shake?"The vinyl LP contains three tracks not found on the initial U.CD edition: Martin Barre's guitar solo tracks "Quatrain" and "Conundrum" (which had an extended drum solo from drummer Barriemore Barlow) and a version of the 1969 UK single hit, "Sweet Dream".During the USA tour, because of health problems, John Glascock was replaced by Anderson's friend and former Stealers Wheel bassist Tony Williams. In 1977, David Palmer (now known as Dee Palmer), who had long been the band's orchestra arranger, formally joined the band on keyboards. After this tour, Anderson decided to record his first solo album. Also after this tour, Barriemore Barlow, deeply upset by Glascock's death, decided to leave the band.In concert, the band was known for theatricality and long medleys with brief instrumental interludes. This culminated with the War Child tour's oversized codpiece and colourful costume.Jethro Tull in concert in Naples, 1998.Martin Barre was the island of calm amongst the madmen, with Anderson (and sometimes Evan) crowding him and making faces during his solos."The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles."Too Old To Rock and Roll...Certain routines from the 1970s have recently become ensconced in concerts, such as having a song interrupted by a phone call for an audience member (which Anderson now takes on a cell) and the climactic conclusion of shows including bombastic instrumentals and the giant balloons which Anderson would carry over his head and toss into the crowd.Roxy Music, UK, Frank Zappa). After pressure from Chrysalis Records, Anderson decided to release it as a Jethro Tull album. In keeping with the mood of innovation surrounding the album, Tull made an early foray into the emerging genre of music video with Slipstream, a film which takes place at London's Hammersmith Odeon (which was used for exterior scenes). However, the main concert footage was actually from an American performance in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Sports Arena (as heard on the Magic Piper ROIO) featuring the A lineup filmed in November of 1980.The video was directed by David Mallet, who has directed numerous music videos including the pioneering "Ashes to Ashes" video for David Bowie. The electronic style of the album was even more pronounced in these live performances and was used to striking effect on some of the older songs, including "Locomotive Breath"."Slipstream", long a rarity on VHS, was included as a bonus DVD with the 2004 remastered edition of the A album.Gerry Conway), Paul Burgess (for the US leg of the Broadsword and the Beast tour), and Doane Perry.Broadsword and the Beast.Viking longship and the band performed in traditional medieval regalia.Although the album featured electronic soundscapes and synthesiser voicings advanced for its time, as well as cerebral lyrics about the alienating effects of technology, the release failed to resonate with longtime fans or with new listeners. However, as with later solo efforts by Anderson and Barre, some of the Walk Into Light songs, such as "Fly By Night", "Made in England" and "Different Germany", later made their way into Tull live sets. However, the video for "Lap of Luxury" did manage to earn moderate rotation on the newly influential MTV music video channel. Also, the acoustic version of the title track, Under Wraps 2, found some favour over the years and a live instrumental version of the song was included on the "A Little Light Music" concert CD of 1992.Anderson continued to oversee his salmon farm which he founded in 1978.Shades of their earlier electronic excursions were still present, however, as three of the album's songs again utilized a drum machine.Metal Performance, beating the favourite Metallica and their ...And Justice For All album. The award was particularly controversial as many did not consider Jethro Tull hard rock, much less heavy metal.Under advisement from their manager, who told them they had no chance of winning, no one from the band attended the award ceremony. In 1992, when Metallica finally won the Grammy in the category, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich joked, "First thing we're going to do is thank Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year."The style of Crest has been compared to that of Dire Straits, in part because Anderson no longer seemed to have the vocal range he once possessed. The album also contained the popular live song "Budapest", which depicts a backstage scene with a shy local female stagehand.Although "Budapest" was the longest song on that album (longer than ten minutes), "Mountain Men" became more famous throughout Europe, depicting a scene from World War II in Africa.CD set, and as a truncated single CD version on 20 Years of band's history in detail. Now out of print, it has become a collector's item, although many (but not all) of the outtakes have been included as bonus tracks on the remasters of the band's studio albums. He joined the band mainly as keyboard player, starting with the 20th Anniversary tour.In 1989, the band released Rock Island, which met with less commercial and critical success than Crest of a Knave.Although Rock Island was something of a miss for the group, a couple of fan favourites did emerge from the album.Jethro Tull Christmas Album release.Allcock, who had played on the Catfish Rising Man", "With You There To Help Me" and "Hunting Girl".As of the end of 2006, the website www.Band member history Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi played guitar for Jethro Tull briefly in 1968 following the departure of Mick Abrahams. The only recording of him with Jethro Tull is on The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus although his guitar is not heard as all of the music (excepting Ian Anderson's vocals and flute) was dubbed in afterwards. He was soon replaced by Martin Barre.Barriemore Barlow replaced Clive Bunker on drums.Genesis' Phil Collins was Jethro Tull's drummer for only one Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution. He matriculated at St John's College, Oxford at the age of 17 but appears to have not taken a degree. He helped transform agricultural practices by inventing or improving numerous implements, the most notable being the seed drill, which he invented in 1701 while living in Crowmarsh Gifford. His interest in ploughing derived from his interest in weed control, and his belief that fertilizing was unnecessary, on the basis that nutrients locked up in soil could be released through pulverization.Although he was incorrect in his belief that plants obtained nourishment exclusively from such nutrients, he was aware that horse manure carried weed seeds, and hoped to avoid using it as fertilizer by pulverizing the soil to enhance the availability of plant nutrients.Tull's inventions were sometimes considered controversial and were not widely adopted for many years.See also Agricultural science British Agricultural Revolution Tillage Note that the benefit of drilling seeds was mostly in weed control.Today people are ignorant how vital good weed control was to yields (and even safety of the food) and how hard and laborious it is to do by hand on a large scale (that is more than a few hectares). This page was last modified 01:26, 29 December 2007.All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. You are seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s.Ian Anderson, the group carved a place all its own in popular music.Tull had its roots in the British blues boom of the late '60s.Edinburgh, Scotland) had moved to Blackpool when he was 12.July 30, 1946) on bass and John Evans (b.By the end of 1967, Glenn Cornick (b.Toggery Five and were now members of a local blues band called McGregor's Engine. They began playing two shows a week, trying out different names, including Navy Blue and Bag of Blues."Sunshine Day," released by MGM Records (under the misprinted name Jethro Toe) the following month. The single went nowhere, but the group managed to land a residency at the Marquee Club in London, where they became very popular. In the late spring of 1968, managers Terry Ellis and Chris Wright (who later founded Chrysalis Records) first broached the idea that Anderson give up playing the flute, and to allow Mick Abrahams to take center stage. At the time, a lot of blues enthusiasts didn't accept wind instruments at all, especially the flute, as seminal to the sound they were looking for, and as a group struggling for success and recognition, Jethro Tull was just a little too strange in that regard.Abrahams was a hardcore blues enthusiast who idolized British blues godfather Alexis Korner, and he was pushing for a more traditional band configuration, which would've put him and his guitar out front. As it turned out, they were both right.Abrahams' blues sensibilities were impeccable, but the audience for British blues by itself couldn't elevate Jethro Tull any higher than being a top club act.Abrahams exited the band. The group went through two hastily recruited and rejected replacements, future Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi (who was in Tull for a week, just long enough to show up in their appearance on the Rolling Stones' Rock 'N Roll Circus extravaganza), and Davy O'List, the former guitarist with the Nice.It wasn't until April of 1969 that This Was got a U.Ironically, the first small wave of American Jethro Tull fans were admiring a group whose sound had already changed radically; in May of 1969, Barre's first recording with the group, "Living in the Past," reached the British number three spot and the group made its debut on Top of the Pops performing the song. The group played a number of festivals that summer, including the Newport Jazz Festival.Their next album, Stand Up, with all of its material (except "Bouree," which was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach) written by Ian Anderson, reached the number one spot in England the next month.Palmer would play an increasingly large role in subsequent albums, and finally join the group officially in 1977.Meanwhile, "Sweet Dream," issued in November, rose to number seven in England, and was the group's first release on Wright and Ellis' newly formed Chrysalis label.Their next single, "The Witch's Promise," got to number four in England in January of 1970.Benefit reached the number three spot in England, but, much more important, it ascended to number 11 in America, and its songs, including "Teacher" and "Sossity, You're A Woman," formed a key part of Tull's stage repertory.King, and Johnny Winter at the Atlanta Pop Festival in Byron, GA, before 200,000 people.Aqualung reached number seven in America and number four in England, and was accompanied by a hugely successful American tour.Released in England during April of 1972, Thick as a Brick got as high as the number five spot, but when it came out in America a month later, it hit the number one spot, making it the first Jethro Tull album to achieve greater popularity in American than in England. At this point, it seemed as though Jethro Tull could do no wrong, and for the fans that was true. The piece was another extended song, running the length of the album, this time steeped in fantasy and religious imagery far denser than Aqualung; it was divided at the end of one side of the album and the beginning of the other by an A.This time, the critics were hostile toward Anderson and the group, attacking the album for its obscure lyrical references and excessive length.Despite these criticisms, the album reached number one in America (yielding a number eight single edited from the extended piece) and number 13 in England. The real venom, however, didn't start to flow until the group went on tour that summer.Anderson was apparently unprepared for the searing reviews that started appearing, and also took the American rock press too seriously.Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, especially once he recognized that the shows were completely sold out and audiences were ecstatic, and the tour continued without interruption.Tull's last platinum album, reaching number two in America and number 14 in England. The dominant theme of War Child seemed to be violence, though the music's trappings heavily featured Palmer's orchestrations, rivaling Barre's electric guitar breaks for attention. In any case, the public seemed to respond well to the group's return to conventional length songs, with "Bungle in the Jungle" reaching number 11 in America.Tull's successful concert tour behind this album had them augmented by a string quartet. The next Tull album, Minstrel in the Gallery, showed up ten months later, in September of 1975, reaching number seven in the United States. This time, the dominant theme was Elizabethan minstrelsy, within an electric rock and English folk context. The Jethro Tull lineup had been remarkably stable ever since Clive Bunker's exit after Aqualung, remaining constant across four albums in as many years. His replacement, John Glascock (b.Anderson and Palmer, released in May of 1976.The group later did an ITV special built around the album's songs. The title track, however (on which Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior appeared as a guest backing vocalist), became a subject of controversy in England, as critics took it to be a personal statement on Anderson's part.In late 1976, a Christmas EP entitled Ring Out Solstice Bells got to number 28.This song later turned up on their next album, Songs From the Wood, the group's most artistically unified and successful album in some time (and the first not derived from an unfinished film or play since A Passion Play). This was Tull's folk album, reflecting Anderson's passion for English folk songs.Having lasted into the late '70s, Jethro Tull now found itself competing in a new musical environment, as journalists and, to an increasing degree, fans became fixated on the growing punk rock phenomenon. In October 1977, Repeat (The Best of Jethro Tull, Vol.The group's next new album, Heavy Horses, issued in April of 1978, was Anderson's most personal work in several years, the title track expressing his regret over the disappearance of England's huge shire horses as casualties of modernization.Tull was lucky enough to acquire the services of Dave Pegg, the longtime bassist for Fairport Convention, which had announced its formal (though, as it turned out, temporary) breakup. The Stormwatch tour with the new lineup was a success, although the album was the first original release by Jethro Tull since This Was not to reach the U.The record, A, was eventually released as a Jethro Tull album in September of 1980, but even the Tull name didn't do much for its success.Barlow, Evan, and Palmer, however, were dropped from the group's lineup with the recording of A, and the new version of Jethro Tull toured in support of the album.Following its lackluster performance, Anderson revived Jethro Tull for the album Under Wraps, released in September of 1984.No further Tull albums were to be released until Crest of a Knave in 1987, as a result of Anderson's intermittent throat problems. In the meantime, the group appeared on a German television special in March of 1985, and participated in a presentation of the group's work by the London Symphony Orchestra. To make up for the shortfall of new releases, Chrysalis released another compilation, Original Masters, a collection of highlights of the group's work, in October of 1985.In 1986, A Classic Case: The London Symphony Orchestra Plays the Music of Jethro Tull was released on record; and Crest of a Knave performed surprisingly well when it was issued in September of 1987, reaching number 19 in England and number 32 in America with the support of a world tour.Crest of a Knave was something of a watershed in Tull's later history, though nobody would have guessed it at the time of its release."Steel Monkey," had a harder sound than any previous record by the group. In 1990, the album Catfish Rising did less well, reaching only 27 in England and 88 in America after its release in September. Some of the information on this page is provided by All Music Guide and does not necessarily reflect the views of Ticketmaster. All Music Guide is a trademark of All Media Guide, LLC.URL for it released than the rock press started hailing it as a "concept album" (prompting Ian Anderson to go to work on the surreal and Pythonesque _Thick as a Brick_ so as to give everybody, tongue firmly in cheek, a _real_ "concept album")."But it does reflect a critical stage in the development of Jethro Tull.Bassist Glenn Cornick had just departed and been replaced by Anderson's boyhood friend Jeffrey Hammond; as of the next album (TaaB) Barrie Barlow would replace Clive Bunker on drums and percussion.Anderson was developing both his songwriting and his acoustic guitar chops, and Martin Barre was successfully finding his "voice" as a guitarist. It's something of a cliche among Tull fans that Anderson's songwriting had taken a darker, more cynical turn as of _Benefit_ (the album preceding this one). This sort of thing was to continue through _Minstrel in the Gallery_ (especially "Baker Street Muse"), roughly until Anderson moved to the country.Anderson was also developing what we now know as "his" acoustic guitar style. And Martin Barre had turned himself into the Tull lead guitarist we all know and love. The opening blast of "Aqualung" is quintessential Tull; the guitar solo on that song ranks among rock's greatest; and I don't know about you, but when I listen to "Locomotive Breath," I have to remember to breathe myself. Now, for all that, this is not my favorite Tull album (or even my favorite _early_ Tull album). The remastered version is clean and crisp, and to my ear somewhat anechoic.Your vote will be counted and will appear on the product page within 24 hours."After nearly thirty years of wearing out various copies of it, I have yet to tire of this phenomenal artistic tour de force. As the show started the house lights went down and the stage went black. Then, hobbling out of the blackness a single spotlight caught Anderson dressed extravagantly like the old man on the album cover, bent over and leaning on his flute, which he used as a cane.Leering maliciously, slowly creeping up front, he finally stopped, silently grinning out at the house as the audience howled with delight. Then he threw his flute straight up, high, and the spotlight went up with the flute, shining and sparkling as it twisted its way up and then down, the only thing visible in the darkness. When the flute came back down it was met by Anderson's upraised hand, and at the instant he clutched it all the stage lights came up and the band struck the thunderous opening notes of the album. If you've somehow denied yourself owning this remarkable work of art and music, get it now!Why don't they try again and get it up to speed?Japanese remaster for a very good recording on CD.See all 150 customer reviews...This album came out in 1971 or thereabouts, with
