Each track, including second single "Please Read the Letter," is an intricately choreographed dance in which Plant and Krauss shift places to accommodate and complement the other.Plant's hushed plea for understanding gains intensity as Krauss and Marc Ribot punctuate the sonic landscape with the fiddle and electric guitar, respectively.New years are a time for renewal, right?Granted, singles from house.Whatever we were to do had to be very positive, and full of intention."Led Zeppelin in 1980, it was to be no mere trot round the block for old time's sake.Starting with a live MTV special titled Unledded, what might have been a tentative return to collaboration became a triumph captured both on videotape and on the album, "NO QUARTER."Such Led Zeppelin songs as "Gallows Pole" and "Kashmir," whose original studio versions had hitherto seemed definitive, were stunningly rearranged to present a thrilling new face, while four new songs inspired by North African rhythms took a bow. There had been a lot of stuff flying around between us, and most of it was coming from my adamance not to have anything to do with a Led Zeppelin rerun.I'd missed Jimmy's playing so much that as soon as we started working, I realized that we'd wasted quite a bit of time.Plant's "reunion" was one of prodigious logistic and aesthetic ambition. We really had to hone our personalities and our expectations to this creature that we'd created; there was no slouching. It was so exciting, a dream come true, which neither of us could have created without the other."Enter a completely unexpected wild card: Steve Albini."Steve Albini really knows how to EQ using microphones, the old science of recording.Plus it's been really wonderful working at Abbey Road.Everything sounded so good."Jimmy and Robert were keen to capture all the flavors that go into their globally eclectic songwriting style, without overcooking the actual recording process, and so losing the spirit of spontaneous invention. To follow where the music takes them.Fiercely proud of their records, Page and Plant have always regarded the music that comes out of the studio as the starting point of a musical journey, not an ending. We'll be doing some Led Zeppelin numbers, but we'll also be doing a good percentage of "WALKING INTO CLARKSDALE" as well. That's what is so exciting about going on the road seeing how songs evolve from their embryonic state on the record. That's the beauty of the thing."That beautiful evolution starts right here.Obj", "950", headerHeight, "8.You can still view this site without the Flash plugin, but it upon my face...It is not a Led Zeppelin reunion, but there are plenty of guest musicians who shine, including Najma Akhtar on vocals and the Egyptian Ensemble, Musicians in Marrakech and the London Metropolitan Orchestra.Plant's voice sounds strained, he makes up for it with effort.Plant's vocal in a lower register sounds better here.North African instrumentation, along with acoustic guitar, and with this number the musicians start to sound more comfortable and relaxed.Plant and Page weave their magic of vocals and guitars.Guitars and banjos and some of the most heartfelt lyrics Page and Plant ever wrote.LZIII that gets a nice treatment here, especially when it picks up tempo and the other instruments join in.It's one of the more obscure tunes from LZIV, but the rapidly strummed nice surprises.Whereas most reunions find aging rock stars regurgitating standard versions of their greatest hits (Kiss, anyone?Jimmy Page and Robert Plant did something different for their 1994 MTV special, during which No Quarter was recorded.Backed by a traditional ensemble from Morocco and a symphony from London, the duo explored what could have been by reworking material from their years with Led Zeppelin (plus presenting three damn good new songs). While the Zeppelin tracks do not outdo the originals (Who would expect that?Moroccan singer and Plant's new, forceful approach to the lyrics produce a memorable version of "Battle of Evermore."An sense and adventure and experimentation is present throughout No Quarter.Out of all of the novel ideas explored on the album, the best is perhaps that of a rock group reuniting with a definitive purpose and producing an excellent album.Upon listening to it, my hopes were dashed. This is a matter of contentiousness between honest Zep fans and Plant freaks. His vocal tone has almost totally changed. No longer does he have the power or range to sing these numbers with conviction.Mostly glarlingly is Kashmir.Arrangement commentary (I'll address later) aside Kashmir is unlistenable from a vocal perspective.Since I've been loving you (SIBLY) also is woeful.Second, the tendancy to play with the arrangements is real hit and miss.Rather boring and plain, but alright. When you get to Kashmir the real outrage happens.Kashmir is a piece of art, to slice it up and add long orchestral sections in the middle was ill advised.Thats not the worst of it.Time will show this to be the worst type of betrayal of the Zep legacy. For lack of space and time, I really won't go into the John Paul Jones issue. The handling of that was extremely poor and will forever taint this effort with fans in addition to its musical shortfalls.Zeppelin material is best appreciated in its unvarnished state. Was this review helpful to you?See all 38 customer compostions from "Led Zeppelin III" and "Houses Of The Holy".John Bonham are certainly competant and their absence tugs at the sentiment of the heart rather than the sensitivity of the ear.But for me the accompanying musicians are what really makes this set go.Arabic lutes, in addition to both Western and Eatern string sections as well as Arabic percussion specialists. The culmination of the meshing of musical talents and the melding of musical sensibilities is no better realized than in the epic performance of "Kashmir", my personal favorite Led Zeppelin song (and perhaps my favorite song by any performer). This is a tremendous sampling of a band broken down to its most musical elements. Not specifically rock, folk, or even acoustic. Was this review helpful to you?"Thanks for the
