1980s, little did he or the rest of the country know the huge impact he would have on British life. His debut work with Bronski Beat ("Smalltown Boy" and "Why") accomplished the previously unthinkable: mixing overtly gay lyrics with catchy melodies, while at the same time becoming substantive Top Ten hits.Although success wasn't immediate for the new pairing, Somerville and Coles achieved their first UK No."Don't Leave Me This Way".By the end of the 80s Jimmy had decided to go it alone and his solo work continued the musical styles he had previously helped establish ("Comment Te Dire Adieu", "Read My Lips (Enough is Enough)" and "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)").Find out about the hotels in Somerville before you book. This album is excellent."Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.Don't deny yourself this CD a minute longer! This music was always in the background of my childhood, and I have vivid memories of Jimmy's numerous hits right through the 80's and early 90's.Nevertheless, some great pop music was recorded during those years, some of it by Jimmy Somerville, who was lead singer of Bronski beat and, later, the Communards. It is worth pointing out that Jimmy was gay and this is reflected in the lyrics of many of the original songs.Bronski beat had six UK hits but only the first four are included here.Hit that perfect beat (a top three hit) and Come on come on are missing. Two of the others also made the top three, these being Small town boy and an unlikely medley (with Marc Almond) of I feel love (Donna Summer) and Johnny remember me (John Leyton). Why made it to number six while It ain't necessarily so made the top twenty.Thelma Houston and Harold Melvin.UK top ten hit, the original song, So cold the night.Their other UK hits were You are my world, Disenchanted, Tomorrow, For a friend and There's more to love.Comment te Dire adieu (featuring June Miles Kingston) made the UK top twenty.Despite the omission of one major UK hit and a couple of minor hits, this is an excellent collection of music by one of the best British pop singers of the eighties. Was this review helpful to you? This is the best album I've heard in ages!Being a collection spanning Jimy Somemrville's career, it is a real mixture of old favourites and some less well known tracks.See all 5 customer reviews...You did not enter a search term.Bronski Beat and the Communards, before embarking on a solo career.Sylvester club perennial "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," rocketed into the Top Five, and the LP Read My Lips was a Top 40 entry as well.Bee Gees chestnut "To Love Somebody" was next, but in the wake of 1991's "Run from Love" Somerville was absent from recording for several years, finally returning in 1995 with the LP Dare to Love.Manage the Damage followed in 1999 and Root Beer arrived a year later.By the end of the '80s, Jimmy Somerville's records with Bronski Beat and the Communards sounded unpleasantly dated and of their time.Write a
