Plateaus, Canyon Spirit, Spiritlands, In the Land of Dreams, and Return to Spiritlands. They are from my "Musical Stories and Visions of the Southwest" Series I started in 1990.Please try out my other newer albums such as Under Desert Skies or Ancestral Waters.Ancient Canyons by John Huling was originally titled Return to Spiritlands. The record label felt that the Return to Spiritlands would sell better under the title Ancient Canyons. The artwork was also changed.Musically speaking, it does not really matter. Both albums are exactly the same only the art and title are different. So be sure you don't already own one before you accidentally buy the other. There is a very limited supply of old stock remaining for fans of the original Return to Spiritlands as well as the other older releases. Many other musicians are now attempting to recreate the unmistakable "Desert Southwest Native American Sound" of John Huling.Using Native American Flutes, his own nature sounds, drums and keyboards, Huling started his enchanting Southwest styles music in the mid to late 80's.The compositions for Desert Plateaus were completed in 1989 and was released one year later for a PBS special about the Anasazi Pueblo Indian culture. Most of the attempts at "sound alike albums" are mid to late 1990's and 2000 or even later.Huling has a great relationship with most his fans and they know the difference.Under Desert Skies by John Huling Music...It took a while but after nearly 10 years I have finally returned to the "Desert Plateaus", "Spiritlands" sound that I started back in 1990.My mother and father (both of whom have since passed away recently) first brought me to the Desert Southwest in 1958.We lived on the edge of the De Anza Borrego Indian Reservation as it was called then in Southern California. It was a fairly remote place at that time compared to present day. That was a car in those days for those who think it might of been an actual "jet".But it made us feel more secure just the same.We would have some water in case our "green bomb" got stuck. My sister and I would listen and dream...Check the John Huling Website often for news about these releases.SPIRITLANDS me and one for himself, several years ago back.To this day I pull out this CD when in dire need of some rest and relaxation. The melodies and beats are at once uplifting and soothing. Each song is a trip through different aspects of tranquility, as is the album as a whole, conjuring visionsof nature in all it's unbridled beauty.Though each ensemble is deserving of recognition, myfavorites would have to be Lost Canyons, with it's infectiously haunting melody, and FinalJourney, with the hypnotic drum beats and soft pattering of rain in the background.I'm working on the computerto help keep me relaxed, or during meditation. This track is one of my favorites.Like track 3, it is mellow allthe way through, is also about six and a half minutes, and is great for meditating orrelaxation.Track 5, "Ghost Dancers" starts out with upbeat drumming and rattles.Track 7, "Spiritlands" starts out with birds chirping, bringing to mind the dawn of a newday, waking up to fresh morning dew.The storm is breaking, the gray turning to brightness asthe sun comes out of hiding. It ends with light pattering and sounds of nightfall, signalingthe end of the day, and the CD.The selections vary in their
