| In a world that lacks compassion, John Martyn and his music, is a breath of fresh air.His trade mark melodies and lyrics are in a class of their own and his voice which is steeped in pleasure and pain, joy and fear and love and hate, expresses emotion like no other and can reduce even the strongest of men to tears.John Martyn was born Iain David McGeachy on 11th September 1948 in New Malden, Surrey, the only son of two light opera singers.John learnt to play the guitar at fifteen and on leaving school at seventeen he started playing in some of the local folk clubs under the wing of Hamish Imlach, who encouraged and John to play the guitar.John was influenced by many different music genres including Debussy and soon began to explore music on his guitar.Clive Palmer who founded the Incredible String Band and became a good friend.John and Clive lived together for a while in a shed near Alston in Cumbria. Those were wild times, and Clive was a remarkable man, a great musician and down to earth, absolutely no bullshit, taught me lots of things to play.London Conversation, was recorded in mono and released in October 1967.An album of innocent songs that won praise from the music press and launched a career that has spanned five decades! The jazz flautist, Harold McNair, who played on The Tumbler, joined John and he performed a number of songs including Dusty, Hello Train, Flying On Home, Seven Black Roses and The Easy Blues, which was to appear 5 years later on Solid Air.In 1969 John married Beverley Kutner, a singer from Coventry, who was recording at the time with producer Joe Boyd of Witchseason.Studios in New York and was released in February 1970.Hendrix lived virtually next door.He used to arrive every Thursday in a purple helicopter, stay the weekend, and leave on the Monday. The Road To Ruin, which was released in November 1970.The album featured the introduction of the other Sunshine Boy, Danny Thompson, on double bass. The Road To Ruin stands apart from other John Martyn albums...My Baby Girl, Mhairi in February 1971.Without elaborating on Bless The Weather too much, let me say that it is a fabulous album, quite definitely one of the very best of 1971, and one which you should spare no amount of trouble over to possess. This album has more than its share of fine songs like that, but noticeably Go Down Easy and May You Never. With mellow jazzy flourishes and warm acoustic sounds, Solid Air is the musical equivalent of a reassuring hug...Over The Hill was also used in the film soundtrack to Scrapple in 1999.Fine Lines, on the album Inside Out, which was released in October 1973.Child and was joined by Danny Thompson and John Stevens on drums, with Paul Kossoff making a guest appearance for the last few songs of some gigs.John sold the limited edition of 10,000 by mail order and from his own front door in Hastings!Kossoff did not feature on the original release and fans had to wait until 1998 for the album to be released on CD with 5 additional tracks featuring Kossoff.September and November 1975 saw John touring again and by the end of the year he was totally exhausted.Paul Kossoff died in March 1976 and John wrote Dead On Arrival about the loss of his friend, a song that he performed later that year, but as yet remains unreleased, as does One For The Road, which John performed on the same tour.John record a single with John Stevens Away called Anni on which John took lead vocal and guitar. In the summer of 1977, Chris Blackwell asked producer Phil Brown to work with John, and the Island Records mobile studio was set up on Saturday the 16th of July 1977 and One World was recorded in three weeks in the courtyard of a house in Teale, Berkshire.John wrote the theme tune Anna (which was based on Small Hours) and some of the incidental music.Grace And Danger was released.Beverley had finally broken down and the album is a collection of very powerful, personal and painful songs.John Giblin played bass with Phil Collins on drums and backing vocals, John and Phil were both going through divorces at the same time and this strengthened their friendship. Two of the songs were also used in films.Save Some (For Me) in The Morning After in 1986 about a woman who wakes up with a hangover and no memory of how she ended up in bed with a dead man!He left Island to sign up with Warner Brothers.Love You More saw Eric Clapton on guitar.John embarked on a massive tour and Alan Thomson joined the band on bass guitar.During the recording John accidentally impaled himself on a fence near his home in Scotland and punctured a lung.To coincide with the release of Well Kept Secret, Island released The Electric John Martyn on 12th October 1982.The tracks included the US mixes of Dancing, Certain Surprise and Dealer (from the American version of One World), the single version of Sweet Little Mystery and the 12 inch dub version of Johnny Too Bad.In 1982 the BBC released a video John Martyn In Vision containing live performances from their archives from 1973 to 1981.John then left Warner Brothers and was without a recording contract.John returned to Island Records and recorded Sapphire at Compass Point studios in the Bahamas.John Martyn strikes the perfect balance between virtuosity and modernism. The series was shown on Tyne Tees Television in the Autumn of 1986 and featured the environmentalist David Bellamy.Want To Know with a new musical arrangement and adapted lyrics. The series ran over budget and plans to release a soundtrack were scrapped.Tight Connection To My Heart.Annie, and was later used in the film soundtrack to Vital Signs in 1990.Pop Quiz with Mike Read and other guests.Live from London a recording of a gig at the Camden Palace Theatre on 23rd November 1984 was released on video on 27th March 1986 and contains an early version of John Wayne. This has now been released on DVD.The album contained three new songs, The Apprentice, Send Me One Line and Deny This Love.Foundations video was also released.Small Hours was used for a contemporary dance called Shock Absorber by The Phoenix Dance Company.Permanent Records was released on 9th September 1991.Tremendous bass lines featured through Jack The Lad, The Cure and the atmospheric title track, which was originally known as Running Up The Harbour.BBC Radio1 Live In Concert contains material taken from the BBC archives featuring 9 tracks recorded at Glastonbury in 1986 along with some earlier material.Love You More is in fact the session tapes for No Little Boy.They had the tapes and I was in America and when I came back the next thing I knew it was out!Love You More were remixed, but most songs were completely overhauled.Child and Bless The Weather featuring John Giblin on bass, and a excellent new version of Just Now featuring Levon Helm on harmony vocals. The end result was a vastly superior album, much more balanced.ReviewWhilst working on No Little Boy John was approached by The London Contemporary Dance Theatre to write the music for a new dance, which was choreographed by the highly acclaimed Darshan Singh Bhuller.Dirty, Down and Live on the Griffin label.Unfortunately, this was a short term relationship as Polygram soon bought the Go Discs label.John improvised most of the lyrics in the studio!John was struggling with his health and whilst seriously ill in hospital he was distraught to learn of the death of his wife Annie, from whom he was separated.May 1999 saw the release of Another World, made from the One World session tapes, a gem providing an insight into the making of One World and featuring instrumentals and the unreleased Blackman At Your Shoulder.John started the new millennium with Glasgow Walker and a tour of Italy and the United Kingdom.Glasgow Walker marks a departure for John in that it is the first album he has written on a keyboard instead of his trusty guitar. But about once every three years or so you hit nine and a half. And when it happens you never really know why it happens.Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow starred in the film, which received widespread acclaim.John and the band had been touring the USA promoting The Church With One Bell album. They were very short on sleep and exhausted with all the travelling when they arrived in New York at Radio WFUV.Arran Ahmun, Spencer Cozens, Jim Lampi and John were squeezed into the room.Want To Know was used as the theme tune for the comedy television series Human Remains directed by Steve Coogan and starring Julia Davis and Bob Brydon.January 2001 and not only contains some stunning live music but also John as we have never seen him before, just chilling out, joking, talking, in the dressing room and behind the scenes rehearsing before the Glasgow Walker Tour.John will also feature on a new BBC DVD release to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of The Old Grey Whistle Test.Presenters of the programme were asked to nominate their favourite moments from the series and Richard Williams chose an early performance of May You Never. He was just singing it to get the vibe of it and even those vocals were brilliant.John and Theresa met in Dublin in 1998 have been inseparable ever since with Theresa accompanying John on his recent tours.John refuses to conform to any particular music genre whilst simultaneously embracing them all.Put simply John Martyn is unique.Parts of this article or section are no longer up to date.He grew up in Glasgow and attended Shawlands Academy.Career
2 Discography
2.This first album was soon followed by The Tumbler, which was moving towards jazz. This sound was first apparent on Stormbringer in 1970, which featured Martyn's then wife, Beverley Kutner, as his collaborator. On this album, as with the one that preceded it, Bless the Weather, Martyn collaborated with jazz bass player, Danny Thompson, with whom he proceeded to have a fruitful musical partnership which continues to this day.He also developed a new, slurred vocal style, the timbre of which resembled a tenor saxophone.Live at Leeds features Danny Thompson and drummer John Stevens, and is notable not only for the performances given, but the recording quality and incredibly quiet audience for a live recording. After releasing Live at Leeds, Martyn took a sabbatical, including a visit to Jamaica, spending time with famous reggae producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It included tracks such as 'Small Hours' and Big Muff, a collaboration with Lee 'Scratch' Perry. One World is notable for having been recorded outside, the album's lush soundscapes partly the result of microphones picking up ambient sounds, such as water from a nearby lake.Released in October 1980, the album had been held up for a year by Island boss Chris Blackwell. He was a close friend of John and Beverley, and found the album too openly disturbing to release.Only after intense and sustained pressure from Martyn did Blackwell finally agree to release the album.Commenting on that period, Martyn said, "I was in a dreadful emotional state over that record. The reason they finally released it was because I freaked: Please get it out!In the late 1980's Martyn would cite Grace and Danger as his favourite album, and said that it was "probably the most specific piece of autobiography I've written.Phil Collins played drums and sang backing vocals on Grace and Danger and subsequently produced Martyn's next album, Glorious Fool (1981).His steady output has gained him considerable recognition as a performer and a songwriter. There is a more comprehensive short biography written by John Hillarby on the Official John Martyn Website via the link below.John continues to write and collaborate with various artists and has recently completed recording a ballad 'Really Gone' with UltanJohn which was released in November '06.Studio albums

internet for awhile, THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.John Martyn on being asked whether he is jealous of his massively successful contemporaries, Van Morrison and Joe Cocker.Today, John shuffles uneasily on the outside of whatever side there happens to be, successfully avoiding categorization by evolving and absorbing the influences of our time.Born Iain David McGeachy on the 11th of September 1948 in New Malden Surrey, the young Martyn was moved to be brought up in Glasgow soon after. The Martyn household boasted some thirteen rooms, forever bustling with aunts and uncles going about their business. His mother also played piano which he particularly enjoyed: "She used to play Debussy when I was a kid. They did a show once with Roy Rodgers and I was introduced to Trigger and I remember I much preferred Trigger to Roy."His parents divorced when he was five resulting in his mother returning to home territory in Surrey, leaving John to spent most of his remaining childhood being brought up by his father and grandmother in Glasgow. His grandmother brought him up the Victorian way with mustard baths and plenty of carbolic soap, while his father was left to teach him: "how to fish and fuck and ride a bike."Weekends were spent with his father in the countryside and school holidays with his mother touring the riverways of Southern England on a houseboat.Cockney and Scotsman, and on a particularly good day I can be Afghani too."In true bohemian style he walked barefoot to school at The Shawlands Academy, whilst his peers considered him far too laid back for the intelligence he displayed. At fourteen Joan Baez's 'Silver Dagger,' prompted John to seek out and learn to play the guitar.Hamish was a larger than life character with an enduring passion for life.He was also an important influence on John during this time, encouraging him to bend the rules, mixing ethnic, rag time and blues into the, at times, restricting folk formula. There was only one member of the audience who could sing and play and that was John, whose set went down so well with the audience Hamish invited John to join him in his set for a few quid. With himself recently kicked out of art school: "for being nasty and silly" and tired of earning money playing darts, he jumped at the opportunity. He) was a mine of information on these things, and simultaneously introduced me to socialism, because that was the driving force at the time.Folk music was folk music, it was for the people, and quite deliberately so."From the socialist aspect of the music he was introduced to many of the great black musicians that were already influencing bands like The Rolling Stones and Cream.People like Howling Wolf, Chuck Berry, Snooks Eaglin and Big Bill Broonzy. At weekends John and his friend Howard Camber would have a few beers and hang out at the Glasgow Folk Centre watching anyone who could play well.Howard agrees: "Hamish was definitely the main influence on John's guitar playing in those early days" but others such as Les Brown (a local guitar maker, who hung out in Glasgow's great folk pubs, such as the Scotia Bar, Clive's Incredible folk Club and Hangman's Rest) left a lasting impression. There were no shortage of talented players for John and Howard to listen to, as the Glasgow scene buzzed with an air of excitement supplied by the likes of Hamish, Matt McGinn, Bert Jansch and an aspiring banjo player by the name of Billy Connolly. Now immersed in the hobo lifestyle he began living the life of a music man, where inevitably drugs became a part of the equation.Firstly, to play at Les Cousins (the experimental music club on Greek Street), following in the steps of Dylan and Donovan, and secondly, to make a record.London in the late sixties was a dream for young John, who soaked up every influence around him both musically and romantically.Everything seemed larger than life, with the Stones and The Beatles, London was 'the' happening place to be.On arrival, he quickly began hustling as many bookings as he could in the many coffeehouses and clubs that catered for the most eclectic of tastes."Fuck you man, I've played in your club five or six times, why haven't you heard me?"In what seemed like no time at all, John was discovered by Theo Johnson performing on the Kingston Folk Barge.Witchseason would later sign acts like Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band, Sandy Denny and Nick Drake.Less than a year after arriving in London the angelic, blue eyed boy had achieved his two ambitions."He was definitely the best flute player I've ever heard. He did a great deal for me in that he opened me up."Early 1969, and folk singer Beverley Kutner spotted John performing at the Chelsea College of Art, he was supporting American singer Jackson Frank.Beverley, who was signed to Deram records at the time, approached John after the gig and asked him to play a few tunes for her."Here he was, individual and rakish, all curly hair and smiles. His live sets also undertook the electrification process with the aid of the Echoplex unit, which rattled folk clubs up and down the country. That said, the record still displays many fine tracks including 'Parcels' which highlights John's developing vocal style with its understated delivery, signaling a new direction.Though both albums received a respectable amount of attention from the press, they didn't sell very well, much to the concern of Island. However, they did begin to signpost John and Beverley's new direction, predominately in that they were quite different. With the imminent arrival of their second child, Beverley was out of the frame and as John later mentioned: "the record company weren't to wild about Beverley. From then on Beverley was rarely seen in public, and this was not Beverley's choice; she was knocked off the roundabout.Bless the weather marked a return to simple songs, which for the most part displayed simple instrumentation.Martyn shone through this new collection of songs. The Fairport Convention were thriving and it paid off.Resulting in great praise from the critics, notably for 'Bless The Weather,' 'Head And Heart' and the innovative Echoplex showcase piece 'Glistening Glyndebourne,' displaying John's increasing mastery of the technique he himself pioneered. The home where he signed his first record deal; where he met his wife Beverley and performed his first legendary Echoplex performance. But Martyn's unorthodox innovations and growing array of gadgets made him a piece that no longer fit, resulting in quick move to the University circuit, a more welcoming and quite frankly the only place left for him to perform. He seemed to have it all.Hop, showcasing the various facets of the John Martyn persona, with its skilful use of distilled jazz, folk, blues and rock.Back then, it swept in with grace revealing new possibilities amidst all the pompous superstardom that had taken precedence over much of the music.Pentangle) bass that remains high up in the mix, blurring and imbedding into John's vocals, which stretch and slur like another instrument adding colour and tone.At this point he'd clearly found his voice, a voice that married naturally with his extraordinary guitar technique. For a long time John couldn't help but feel that maybe he didn't do enough: "Nick was a beautiful man, but walking on solid air, helpless in this dirty business, and innocent abroad ...He was killed by the indecent, parasitic opportunism that pervades the music business.""I've never sung as good on that record.John Martyn on Nick Drake.Returning from a stateside tour supporting Free and Traffic, Island quickly ushered Martyn into the studio, where they gave him a free hand.Perverse as he is (he'd know begun wearing three piece suits) the predictable and commercial sequel failed to surface.Instead Inside out an album of freer and less structured songs, arrived to a mixed reception. But a lot of people said it was very complicated."Regardless of what the critics did or didn't say it won him a Golden Disc from Montreux, and for Martyn it was: "everything I ever wanted to do in music ...Inside out was heavily influenced by Martyn's increased submersion in jazzers like Joe Zawinul, John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter.Working long and hard with little time to hang out, life on the road began to take its strain with Martyn developing an array of infections and boils forcing him to increase his intake of cocaine."The intensity of recording that album was so strong that I needed to dry out.For the Sunday's Child tour John persuaded Paul Kossoff (who at the time was inactive and heavily involved with drugs) to take the road with him, Danny Thompson and John Steven's.Kossoff joined the stage on the last few numbers, which were usually 'Clutches,' 'So Much In Love With You' and 'Mailman. What can you do with someone like that?"From the extensive touring that Martyn had endured over the past year the infamous Live at Leeds was released.Somehow, when these two men worked together they didn't even have to try."Those were wild times, all part of the Jazzy thing.John Martyn on Paul Kossoff
On the road they were impossible and nobody knew what to do with them. They didn't pay bills, they demanded money with menaces and sometimes scrapped on stage."He nailed me under a carpet once," recalls John.So he stepped over my helpless body, went to the phone and in a very loud voice said, 'can I have a glass of orange juice for one please?Rumour has it, that Danny ceased touring with John in light of adverse effects from their growing indulgences on the road.Admittedly, at this point John was now earning more money than he'd ever earned before, but found himself unhappier than ever. The sabbatical took up most of 1976, passing four months in Jamaica (on Strawberry Hill, the wrong side of the fence that separated the rich whites from the poorer blacks), winding down with the natives amidst cheap rum and reefer. With encouragement from Dub producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry, John soon began playing again. And 'look up a nana' is what you do when you're a naughty little boy and you look up your grandmother's skirt. If you want the truth blacks are hipper than we are, they're got more vibes and have lost less."Inside out was to be the closing chapter on Martyn's innovative experiments with Moroccan and Arabic scales. After ten years of hard graft people were beginning to wake up to the music of the smiling stranger. With the DJ and producer present, they began the interview with a John and Beverley Martyn track. How COULD you play that?I'm ready to walk out of this station, you heartless ignorant fuckers."To this day, the DJ (whom wishes to remain nameless) at the station has never played a John Martyn track. And both being fans of Robert Johnson they attempted writing a drinking blues song together called 'The Brahms and Liszt Blues' (Brahms and Liszt being cockney rhyming for 'pissed').Back in 1969 John and Beverly celebrated their love for one another with the album Stormbringer. The long spells away from home and all that comes with the rock 'n' roll lifestyle had slowly edged Martyn into the eye of the storm."I'd noticed that John was in something of a bad shape and I offered moral support by inviting him to stay here in the house, where we recorded the basic tracks for Grace with bassist John Giblin."True to form, the creative stream flowed in abundance with pain and misery the driving force.Grace and danger was John's very own Blood on the tracks, his most open and autobiographical album to date."Every song on that album, whatever people think of them, they are honest.I'm singing to Beverley those love songs."With these songs John attempted to exorcise what demons he could, no doubt resulting in a long hard look at himself.I'm singing to Beverley those love songs."The decision, that apparently had nothing to do with the fact that Chris Blackwell delayed Grace for nearly a year, was due to a combination of attitude and money.I'm a very loyal person ...But I wanted my career to expand rather than remain static."The lies came courtesy of the newly elected American president Ronald Reagan, the Marlboro smoking fool. With a sparse arrangement lightly underpinning him, the big geezer has never sounded so vulnerable. Many believed this was the end of the John Martyn that they knew and loved.WEA wanted another album quickly to capitalize on Martyn's growing popularity, the result Well kept secret is regarded by many as Martyn's worst album to date.John was guilty of over indulging in the common musical phrasings of the eighties, something Martyn has always consciously avoided, and in doing so he lost a lot of his uniqueness. The success of Glorious fool seemed to have lulled John into a false sense of security, hence an over zealous stab at the big time. However, the recording of Secret suggests Martyn never had any agenda, being so 'out of it' during the sessions, he can't even recall recording the album.During recording Martyn went for a swim in the nude near his home in Lanarkshire, and whilst attempting to vault a fence, the fence gave way resulting in a trip to hospital.By the time he got to the hospital John was so plastered he was told by the nurse to wait for twelve hours (with several fractured rips, one of which had punctured his lung), until he'd sobered up.Martyn spent the rest of the subsequent recordings so loaded they remain a blur.At a time when he was reaching his largest audience, John began to feel like a pawn in the record companies game.Driven by a new management, he found himself doing the promotional rounds of America and hating it: "I went round America doing the whole schlep, four interviews and two radio stations a day.Nothing used to infuriate me more than playing a mediocre gig and finding the record company backstage going 'Fantastic!Signing back to Island soon after, Chris Blackwell quickly shipped John out to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, to begin the recording of a new album. That Sapphire was completed at all was quite an achievement, with many of the musicians consuming too much cheap rum, and John landing himself with a producer who knew very little about him or his music.Things came to a head whilst recording 'Rope Soul'd,' when the producer insisted John laid down some more lyrics, and not being one to mince words, John fired him.In the end, admits John: "It was all down to Robert."And it was John Wayne, so I slid him in to confuse the thing in my own brain."Whatever immediately strikes your heart is alright. The soundtrack that was to contain contributions from other artist's was shelved when the series ran over budget. After a long struggle with Island he was left with no option but to sell it himself. For six months he entered a life minus music, downing nearly half a bottle every morning just to get straight.Fortunately, he did and avoided becoming another causality of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. He toured mainly solo but was occasionally accompanied by Foster Paterson and his vast array of computer programs and drum machines.Foster who contributed heavily on Piece by piece and The apprentice, empathizes with the troubled hobo: "John's a bit of a tragedy, cause he's an incredibly talented man.His biggest enemy seems to be himself and alcohol. But he knows that, and he lives with it."Finally, via a brand new label (Permanent), The apprentice was released. The superbly crafted ballads are all there, along with the title track, the finest written track on the album. His second release with Permanent, Cooltide, was a more confident and laid back affair with a jazzy tilt to boot. The technology which had overcrowded some of the songs on The apprentice, had evolved considerably, enabling John to fly free. With a string of increasingly strong albums behind him John began to regain critical acclaim, only to be shattered with the release of two ill conceived albums, Couldn't love you more and No little boy.The result was an album that should never have been released and Martyn hated it.Whilst promoting No little boy John suggested his new direction to Guitar Magazine: "If I've been working on anything for the last six years it's becoming a better singer, and I think I'm getting there ...People like Morrissey just piss me off ...With Permanent relations soured he parted company and once again John was alone. And you find yourself in some sort of financial or contractual hole that you really shouldn't be in ...Another label change occurred soon after And, as Go Discs suddenly ceased to function as a label.Fortunately, Andy MacDonald founder of Go Discs founded his own independent company, Independiente and John was quickly signed. It was then the cover album was born. The timing couldn't have been better, elevating the pressure to complete the new album and bringing a much needed flow of cash for a church (that is now John's recording studio) which John had his eye on for quite some time.As spontaneous as all John Martyn sessions are, the lyrics were faxed through on the day of recording.Recording The church with one bell effectively lifted him from his creative slump and by January 1998 he was back to work on the new album. As 1998 progressed John's drinking had subsided and he'd turned to Buddhism, which in turn reflected in the quality of his live work.In between sets he now leaves the venue and walks the streets for consoling isolation: "I used to hang with everybody, but it's dangerous because you get drunk.Recently, John supported The Verve (at the bands request) at their homecoming concert at Haigh Hall in Wigan. With a capacity crowd of thirty three thousand he performed a short unrehearsed set, whilst the crowd either ignored or harassed him.His new album is now complete (which I believe features John's own live drum manipulations, plus many new musicians including Jim Lampi on the Chapman Stick) and awaits to be released by Independiente. That he is still performing and recording quality heartfelt music is in itself an achievement to be proud of.Martyn claims his best music is yet to come. And now, like Martyn we must play the waiting game and hope serendipity prevails."Are you sure you want to delete this comment?"Tle and thinyks you lobok
