"Bill's still an asset, but he wasn't enough.Transcript: THE MCLAUGHLIN GROUP HOST: JOHN MCLAUGHLIN PANEL: PATRICK BUCHANAN, MSNBC; ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK; TONY BLANKLEY, THE WASHINGTON TIMES; MORT ZUCKERMAN, U.Copyright (c) 2007 by Federal News Service, Inc.Vermont Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005, USA.Federal News Service is a private firm not affiliated with the federal government. No portion of this transcript may be copied, sold or retransmitted without the written authority of Federal News Service, Inc.This followed two earlier interest rate cuts from the Fed and a 3.But it wasn't enough to banish the Wall Street hobgoblins.Real estate values in the top metropolitan markets are plummeting as much as 10 percent this year. And the day after Bernanke's Halloween treat, the stock market dropped over 360 points.BUCHANAN: It certainly can, John. However, at the same time, if you look at the price of gold, you look at the price of oil, you look at the Canadian dollar, the Euro, the pound, they're all saying that inflation is coming and the dollar is going down dramatically. So you've got two great conflicts here. One says cut interest rates to get the economy moving.MCLAUGHLIN: Are you in big?BUCHANAN: I'm in big in gold and silver.MCLAUGHLIN: Are you still buying?BUCHANAN: I can't afford it now.CLIFT: Look, the data points are not all bad. This economy is working well for people at the very top.Going into the '08 presidential campaign, the economy is going to be every bit as big an issue as war.MCLAUGHLIN: What happens if there's a run on the dollar?BLANKLEY: I have no idea. The same economists who are predicting the economy is going to shrink next quarter were predicting it was going to shrink last quarter. So, yes, we should be concerned. But it's not just the rich people.BLANKLEY: But justifiably, everybody's anxious.MCLAUGHLIN: Do you think Tony has failed in his appeal to some optimism?ZUCKERMAN: No, I think there is reason for some optimism. You have a situation where we have two and a half trillion dollars of paper, of which the estimate is that 25 percent of it is going to be wiped out in value. And that's just the estimates today.MCLAUGHLIN: Is Citibank following in that wake?AAA paper has gone down to 79, AAA paper.I'm predicting that it's going to be much worse than people were saying for the last several months.MCLAUGHLIN: What's his quandary?ZUCKERMAN: He has to save the financial system.BUCHANAN: But John, that's the problem.ZUCKERMAN: The inflation that they measure, if I may say so, is without food and energy. And on that basis, the inflation rate is about two and a half percent.BUCHANAN: But, look, look, I know it is now.But the dollar is sinking like a stone. Those prices are going to begin to rise.MCLAUGHLIN: Do you think we should open the window and go to the ledge now?BUCHANAN: We probably do, Eleanor, in our portfolios.ZUCKERMAN: The companies will take the hit.And the problems that Mort is talking about are coming.MCLAUGHLIN: It's going to start in December, but we're not going to know it until June.MCLAUGHLIN: No, we won't know it.That is the lubrication that makes the whole economy work.MCLAUGHLIN: Do you think they think there's going to be a recession?MCLAUGHLIN: They'll be happy if it's a recession and not a depression.MCLAUGHLIN: I have already spoken. The answer is it will begin in December and it will be visible in June, before the election.TIM RUSSERT (NBC News): Do you, the New York senator, Hillary Clinton, support the New York governor's plan to give illegal immigrants a driver's license? You told the New Hampshire paper it made a lot of sense.Do you support his plan?NY): You know, Tim, this is where everybody plays "gotcha."It makes a lot of sense. What is the governor supposed to do?He is dealing with a serious problem.Tim Russert built his question out of Hillary's comments to a newspaper editorial board in Nashua, New Hampshire. And I hate to see any state being pushed to try to take this into their own hands because the federal government has failed.MCLAUGHLIN: I disagree with you. She's okay with Spitzer.MCLAUGHLIN: He's got 500,000.Under those circumstances, he should do it.BLANKLEY: Let me make a point here.BLANKLEY: Since 1964, when I worked for Barry Goldwater. They started showing her less respect than they have. And the question is, will she be able to sustain the image of the inevitable candidate through the next two, three, four weeks?ZUCKERMAN: She shifted the focus from her strength and from her experience and from her knowledge to whether or not she's evasive. It became an issue of trust and character. And that's the way the dialogue about her has shifted as a result, not just of this, but of the way she answered a whole series of questions. She is out there now supporting driver's licenses for illegal aliens. One is not even a full license. It's a special card, and you get it for being on the road. You're for giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens.Political rhetoric is normally glib.BUCHANAN: She will get off this position.MCLAUGHLIN: Okay, politics, yes.Cannibalism like Buchanan, yes, and politics, no.Unless I missed something, Senator Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes just a few minutes ago.And I think this is a real issue for the country.MCLAUGHLIN: Unfortunately for John Edwards, Bill Richardson, in Hillary's defense, returned fire. You know what I'm hearing here? It's bothering me, because it's pretty close to personal attacks that we don't need.ZUCKERMAN: Well, I think almost every shot from Edwards is a cheap shot.He is the guy who accepts more money from the trial lawyers than anybody else.ZUCKERMAN: He represents hypocrisy.ZUCKERMAN: Hypocrisy and glibness; that's what he represents. All of these vulnerabilities are out there, including the one about her electability. She didn't handle them very well the other night.MCLAUGHLIN: What are you exacerbated about now?BLANKLEY: You're giving her the credit for some sort of lofty intellectual discussion when that's the most calculated evasion of taking a position on any position that I've seen in a presidential campaign.MCLAUGHLIN: Oh, that's nonsense. She took a position on it.She said it's not good for every state.BUCHANAN: Let me get into this, John. She was utterly unprepared for an easy question she was certain to be asked about Spitzer.CLIFT: Pat, I have news for you.In most areas of this country, you get a driver's license with a birth certificate and proof of residence with some utility bills.Spitzer has a third division.MCLAUGHLIN: Issue Three: But Can Hillary Get the Vote?Remember, big numbers are bad; small numbers are good. It's done on the computer. Now, he may be, shall we say, exaggerating.MCLAUGHLIN: I know that.ZUCKERMAN: Well, we don't know how they are selected.MCLAUGHLIN: They select themselves.MCLAUGHLIN: He said, "Do you want to be polled?"What I'm saying is, forget the Zogby poll. The fact is that she has a fairly low ceiling.MCLAUGHLIN: We should insist that polling be done in person by professional pollsters.BUCHANAN: All right, John, throw the poll out.But every single poll ever taken nationally, she's at the top in terms of numbers who will never vote for her.February 5, Super Tuesday, from then until the election to turn it around.Granted, it's 50 percent. And every matchup with the Republicans, she beats the Republican.CLIFT: That's a much more relevant figure than this one.The worst that happened to her was afterwards.ZUCKERMAN: I wouldn't give her more than a C.BLANKLEY: It changed all the comment about her. That's the big issue that people really identify her with, and she reminded everybody of her weakness.MCLAUGHLIN: The answer is she gets an A.Issue Four: Hillary's Revenge.CLIFT: Well, the gender issue is obvious. It was a tag team, and it was all guys going after her, and optics do matter. And I think she followed up the debate with a speech at Wellesley College, which is her alma mater. And Mark Penn, her pollster, says that she can get up to 24 percent of Republican women. So the gender issue is obvious, but she shouldn't overplay it.Look, I think that was very effective. She went up to all these young gals and said, you know, "We're up there. We're in there with the boys now.But don't overplay it and don't act like a victim. And I think that tape was good. You're going all over that question.BUCHANAN: I come down that she's handled it, after the first 24 hours, extremely well.BLANKLEY: What you didn't show was John Edwards' ad where he showed Hillary on both sides of about four different issues. She gave a lot of grist for the advertising mill. She also handled it well.BUCHANAN: Hillary came back well at Wellesley, John. She will also repudiate amnesty, because that is the one burning populist issue that reaches Democrats, independents, working folks, black Americans. You cannot hold a position of softness on illegal immigration and be elected.BUCHANAN: Are you serious?CLIFT: People calling for amnesty.CLIFT: The prediction is that the Democrats have legitimized the Republican attacks on Hillary Clinton, and "Slick Billary" will become part of Republican attacks.BLANKLEY: They won't pass a health care bill either.ZUCKERMAN: In a recent poll, 87 percent of voters between the ages of 18 and 30 say they will vote. This is going to be a dramatic help for the Democrats, not for the Republicans.MCLAUGHLIN: I predict that Judge Michael Mukasey will be confirmed as U.This article does not cite any references or sources.Jon McLaughlin), is a jazz fusion guitarist from Doncaster, Yorkshire in England. He is regarded by many as one of the most influential and technically gifted guitarists of all time, having mastered a remarkable range of styles and genres, including jazz, Indian classical music, fusion, and Flamenco.McLaughlin recorded Extrapolation (with Tony Oxley and John Surman) in 1969, in which McLaughlin showed technical virtuosity, inventiveness, and the ability to play in odd meters.Davis paid tribute to him in the liner tracks that expressed some of McLaughlin's other influences include "Something Spiritual" (Dave Herman), "Hearts and Flowers" (P.Bob Cornford), "Phillip Lane," "Waltz for Bill Evans" (Chick Corea), "Follow Your Heart," "Song for My Mother" and "Blue in Green" (Miles Davis). It was on this album that McLaughlin took the name "Mahavishnu."Luc Ponty), keyboardist Jan Hammer (later Gayle Moran and Stu Goldberg), bassist Rick Laird (later Ralphe Armstrong), and drummer Billy Cobham (later Narada Michael Walden). The band performed a technically virtuosic and complex style of music that fused eclectic jazz and rock with eastern and Indian influences.McLaughlin's playing at this time was distinguished by fast solos and exotic musical scales. He has also worked with the jazz composers Carla Bley and Gil Evans. The Mahavishnu Orchastra's personality clashes were as explosive as their performances and consequently the first incarnation of the group split in late 1973 after just two years and three albums, one of which was a live recording "Between Nothingness and Eternity".Mclaughlin then reformed the group with Nerada Michael Walden (drums), Jean Luc Ponty (violin), Ralphe Armstrong (bass) and Gayle Moran (keys and vocals). The incarnation of the group recorded a further two albums, after which time Mclaughlin was almost completely absorbed in his acoustic playing with his Indian classical music based group Shakti (see below). The group featured Lakshmirnaraya L.Shankar (violin), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Thetakudi Harihara Vinayakram (ghatam) and earlier Ramnad Raghavan (mridangam).John was the first westerner to attain any acclaim performing Indian music for Indian audiences.Larry Coryell (replaced by Al Di Meola in the early 1980s) as the Guitar Trio, the virtuoso talents of all three musicians equally on display.Di Meola, reunited in 1996 for a second recording session and a world tour.Mclaughlin was so used to the scalloped fretboard from his Shakti days and so accustomed to the freedom it provided him that he had the fretboard of the Gibson Byrdland Electric hollow body he used on the album scalloped. One Truth Band who recorded just the one studio album: with latter featuring Dominique DiPiazza on bass for all but two tracks. The synth also featured a pedal which provided virtually infinite sustain when pressed. The results of this are quite incredible, with Mclaughlin playing parts which sound overdubbed and creating lush soundscapes, aided by Gurtu's unique percussive sounds. In 1986 he appeared with Dexter Gordon in Bertrand Tavernier's film "Round Midnight."He also composed The Mediterranean Concerto, orchestrated by Michael Gibbs. The world premier featured McLaughlin and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It was recorded in 1988 with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. In the early 1990s he toured with his Quartet on the Que Alegria album. The quartet comprised John McLaughlin, Trilok Gurtu, Kai Eckhardt and Dominique DiPiazza. In addition to original Shakti member Zakir Hussain, this group has also featured eminent Indian musicians U.Abstract Logix label that works closely with independent jazz, progressive rock,
