Johnson during the 30s playing get backs, juke joints, street corners, and The Elder
Moten Hour radio program in Windsor, Canada.The two split up shortly before
Johnson's mysterious death, and Shines went on to fame as one of the innovators of
the Chicago Blues style.In addition to many recordings for a
variety of labels, Shines has performed throughout the United States, Europe and
Japan.In the late 60s, Shines daughter died leaving 10 children.He moved to
Tuscaloosa to raise his grandchildren.In 1980, Shines suffered a career threatening
stroke, but his strength and determination returned him to the concert stage until his

The September 3rd, 1969, session at the Thunderbird Motel
in Chicago started with Johnny Shines, whose participation was
solicited by Big Joe Williams.In Windows
Media, the size is 779 Kb.Johnny had already made
a dent in the Jim Beam whiskey and started teasing Honey, who
took it with his characteristic good humor.Johnny Shines is born in Frazier, Tennessee, on 26 April 1915.In 1932, at the age of 17, now married and living in Hughes, Arkansas, Johnny begins learning guitar to complement his accomplished singing, helped along by his older brother Willie and a circle of Hughes musicians that included the young Howlin' Wolf.In Helena, Arkansas, in 1935 he meets Robert Johnson.He played a good guitar, the best Johnny had heard.He would have the boogie beat strumming on the bass strings while he played.He new Robert was the man of the day.Johnny appears with Johnson on The Elder Moten Hour, a local radio show in Detroit.However, he and Johnson soon go their separate ways.Johnny settles in Chacago in 1941 after finding receptive audiences for his music.He secures a recording date with the Columbia Record label in 1946.But the for blues numbers he records for them are not released.Johnny quits music in 1958.He finds work on a construction site but over the next few years he will keep in touch with the blues scene by taking photographs in the Chacago clubs.Johnny Shines dies on 22 April 1992 after continued long illness.Click inside to view Larger Map. |
