Following a nervous breakdown and increasing difficulties with drink, Coyne left the UK in 1985.He settled in Nuremberg, and having given up alcohol, never stopped recording and touring, as well as writing books and exhibiting his paintings. His German recordings often featured his own Paradise band, but increasingly in later years he collaborated with Brendan Croker, Jon Langford of The Mekons, Gary Lucas of The Magic Band and his own son Robert Coyne.Diagnosed with lung fibrosis in 2002, Coyne died peacefully at his home.He is survived by his wife Helmi and his sons Eugene, Robert and Nico. His wife Helmi intends to continue releasing recordings Kevin made in his last years on Kevin's own Turpentine records. The first is Underground (2006).Tribute Year

society should get its most recognition and exposure from white Europeans. It was during this huge revival that a young art student named Kevin
Coyne put up a flyer at the Derby School For The Arts seeking to jam some
blues.Kevin Coyne was born in Derby in 1944.He is, in my opinion, one of the
greatest talents ever produced out of Europe. His voice cuts to your soul,
while tingling your spine along the way.Buried near
the end of the first album's collection of jumping and grooving blues is a
somber, mysterious solo song by Kevin.Kevin and two acoustic guitar tracks. The song is no doubt influenced by
Kevin's work with the insane. The song is a monologue of an insane man,
talking to you, telling you of the cold dank place where he lives. This contains
another odd duck Coyne penned composition, 'Hold My Hand', a warbly, strangely
tuned guitar and Kevin's telling of a relationship between a man in his mid
twenties, and a much, much older woman, who is only into young guys, and
dumps the guy for a 9 year old (!Thanks to a largely unresponsive music
audience, Kevin left Siren.Kevin refused, and the Doors made a brief attempt to
continue.Instead of
singing about the life of a rock and roll hedonist, Kevin penned songs that
delved deep.Coyne released his first LP in 1972, Case History, on John Peel's Dandelion label. The 1978 LP, Dynamite Daze (a song dedicated to Sid Vicious) closed the
chapter of Kevin as the psychedelic blues man.Kevin is a guest at pop's wild party, and being kicked out when Kevin

Happy's marvelous Dagmar Krause. The story is of The Moors Murderers,
and Kevin's attempt to find the love they shared before their personal and
public demise. It's almost like a lost Robert Wyatt solo LP.Sadly, around this time, Kevin started to go through some problems. However, Kevin kept
putting out music, though his alcoholism started to get out of hand.Pointing The Finger featured Brian Godding on guitar.Kevin and company rock out to some angular jazz rock. After his two Cherry Red releases, Kevin's mental state worsened to the point
that his marriage dissolved, and his dependence on alchohol continued, along
with the pressure to keep his career going. After his divorce, Kevin left
England, and relocated to Germany. He continued to release music steadily
throught the 80's, backed up by The Paradise Band.Through the support of his friends and fans, Kevin soon started to pick
himself up by the boot straps. The Alcoholic has turned himself
into the Workaholic!Kevin's new album, Knocking On Your Brain, features help from Gary
Lucas, guitarist extrodinaire whose credits include Captain Beefheart and
Joan Osbourne.If
that is not enough, there are plans in the works for Kevin to come over to

was 60 in January 2004.In this article, Frank Bangay, survivor
poet and mental health activist looks back over Kevin's career. My first introduction to
Kevin Coyne's music came in 1973.Kevin Coyne was born in
Derby in 1944.After leaving school he attended Art College studying
graphics and painting. After this he worked as a social therapist
at the Whittingham Psychiatric Hospital in Preston Lancashire. In 1968 he moved to London.Signing to John Peel's Dandelion label they released two
LPs.Siren and Strange Locomotion. In 1971 Siren broke up Kevin
then worked at the Soho project in London.During this time he made his first solo album
Case History.Unfortunately Dandelion ceased to exist. However it did come to the attention of Virgin records.Musically it's a mixture
of blues and music hall comedy, with a punk edge.Kevin carried on making
interesting records.Like Blame It On The Night and Matching Head
and Feet.Despite this and his heavy drinking taking its toll,
he carried on working. One record in particular Pointing the Finger
spoke of his experiences at the time.In 1985 Kevin left England
to live in Germany.Settling in Nuremberg where he lived until
his death at the beginning of December last year.It proved to
be a good move. Then in 1990 he toured here. His second book
Showbusiness was published in 1993.Elvira (recorded in 1979)
released in 1995 tells an interesting story.During this period
Kevin released a number of new recordings. The Adventures of Crazy
Frank in 1995.Garry Lucas who has worked with Captain Beefheart. The cover features
some great Coyne artwork.Kevin's gigs were always an uplifting
experience with his onstage humour. In 2003 Kevin was diagnosed
with lung fibrosis.Over the years he has shown himself to be something of a
survivor.Kevin has written for a variety of magazines and newspapers, including the Asbury Park Press and The New York Times, for which he now writes a weekly column about New Jersey. He is the author of A Day in the Night of America (1992), Domers: A Year at Notre Dame (1995) and the recipient of the J. |
