part due to the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto!"Michael Rennie as Klaatu Klaatu (played by Michael Rennie) arrives in a flying saucer in Washington, DC, wearing a silver spacesuit and accompanied by a large humanoid robot, Gort (played by Lock Martin).Klaatu arrives as a peaceful ambassador from an extraterrestrial confederation, but when he presents a harmless device containing the combined knowledge of several worlds, he is shot by one of the soldiers that form his rather apprehensive welcoming committee. To protect Klaatu, Gort vaporizes all of the surrounding weaponry.Klaatu is taken to a hospital, where he quickly recovers, and on learning that the government doesn't expect other nations to be willing to come to meet him, wants to get out to meet the people. The government wants to keep him in the hospital, so Klaatu escapes with a disguise, using the surname Carpenter.Carpenter is brought by later by an army driver, Barnhardt discusses the situation with Klaatu, agrees to summon scientists from all nations, and asks Klaatu for a show of power that won't harm anyone, thus exhibiting that the extraterrestrial alliance controls enormous power that would threaten Earth if Earth threatens the peace in space.Klaatu neutralizes electric power all over the world (with some notable exceptions, such as hospitals and airplanes in flight) for 30 minutes.Unfortunately, as a result, Klaatu is taken to be a threat and, betrayed by Mrs.However, Gort is programmed to defend Klaatu and will wreak havoc if anything untoward happens to him.Klaatu had told Mrs.Gort aborts his attack, retrieves Klaatu's body, transports him to the saucer, and revives him from death.Keanu Reeves as Klaatu A remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, to begin production in late 2007 or early 2008, will feature Keanu Reeves in the role of Klaatu and Jennifer Connelly as Helen Benson.Release dates for The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008).See Copyrights for details.Charts Concerts Lyrics News Y!Pepsi Smash Nissan Live Sets Who's Next?Klaatu was released on Capitol Records to little notice.Klaatu is the central character of the 1951 science fiction film The Day The Earth Stood Still, but KIaatu is also the name of a Canadian rock group.American science fiction films of the fifties."In this highly allegorical film, Klaatu, a peace emissary from outer space, accompanied by Gort, a robot, lands in Washington D.Klaatu is a quick healer and after he finds it impossible to deliver his message simultaneously to all nations through diplomatic channels, he escapes from the military hospital where he is being held and steps out to see the town. After several plot complications, Klaatu decides that Earthlings might listen if they knew what was at stake, if they just stopped for a while and thought about it.In the movie, Klaatu thought that peace and silence were eloquent enough to speak for themselves. In the music world, the rock group, Klaatu, was naive enough to think that their music would speak for itself so they remained anonymous. No writing credits, other than "Klaatu" were given on their early recordings. No biographical information was furnished to the record company that signed them (probably the only time this has happened). The group made no public appearances. As the recording begins, we hear someone walking in a forest. Then we hear a record start (in 1976, we were still playing vinyl). We are asked to concentrate and call our friends in outer space.Tell them we mean no harm. The Beatle comparisons are not unique to my ears.Since the group provided no biographical information either to the record company or the public, (they were very secretive about their identities), and rock fans wanted a Beatles' reunion, the rumor began that Klaatu was, in fact, the Beatles.Because of this rumor (and its subsequent debunking), in 1977, Rolling Stone Magazine dubbed Klaatu,"Hype of the Year."Also because of the Beatle rumor, album sales rose high enough to gain for Klaatu the number 32 spot on the Billboard chart for the week of April 30, 1977, where they remained for three weeks. In the movie, the character, Klaatu, is killed before he is able to communicate his message to his intended audience. In the music world, Klaatu, the rock group, was abandoned by many listeners who felt they had been deceived by a group of unknown musicians pretending to be the Beatles. When the rumor about the Beatles declined in popularity, so did Klaatu's album sales. In the film, Klaatu is resurrected via technology and the world is granted another chance to hear his message.Klaatu imagined that the asteroids had once been a planet that had been destroyed in a catastrophic conflict between nationalistic societies. With his last breath, the lighthouse keeper utters what he perceives to be the perfect prayer, what all creatures live for: hope.Intricately crafted and produced by Klaatu with longtime friend and collaborator, Terry Brown (who produced many recordings for the rock band, Rush), Hope is a blending of musical styles achieved with taste and virtuosity. The album incorporates jazz, rock, pop, classical, and romantic musical genres to paint a colorful, interesting and pleasant picture in sound.Speaking to a body of scientists from around the world, Klaatu's message is much like the lighthouse keeper's on the Hope album, 'be warned or be mourned tomorrow."In the film, Klaatu explains that, before nuclear weapons and rockets were an issue, Earth's wars and nationalistic squabbling were her own affair. However, now that Earth is venturing into a more advanced technology, Earth's neighbors in space are concerned. If Earthlings do not behave themselves, warns Klaatu, the alien, Earth will have to be destroyed.Klaatu then returns to his spacecraft and departs. This time, the drawing was done by Hugh Symes and the album was, both visually and musically, less conceptual than its predecessors. The album is more of a collection of single songs than Klaatu's previous albums had been, less of a collective opus. One song of particular interest is titled, "Silly Boys."Yet, the lyrics seem coherent. This song is, in fact, backwards. The majority of the song is a song from Klaatu's first album played backwards. The band just happened upon it by accident and said, "Hey, that's weird.Let's put it on the album."On Klaatu's next album, Endangered Species, we finally discover who these "Silly Boys" are.Klaatu was formed by three studio musicians who lived in Toronto, Canada. These musicians are John Woloschuk, Dee Long and Terry Draper. When asked in an interview if Klaatu's emergence into the media's spotlight might dilute their message, John Woloschuk replied with a laugh, and then said, "Not really. That's a shame, I think, because I feel it is a better album than either Sir Army Suit or Endangered Species. The album, Magentalane, is more positive, emotionally, and it has a heavier, fuller, sound, like that found on Klaatu's first album. There are plans being formulated to release an album of alternate mixes and rare recordings by Klaatu.Like the character in the film, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Klaatu is thousand records, but it also blinded much of the world to a simple fact: KLAATU was a great LP in it's own right. If anything, I like KLAATU better than I did when it was released several lifetimes about a year before exploding in late 1972 and the members went their separate ways.Long and Woloschuk continued to work together at Long's father's electronics factory where they hatched the idea of Klaatu.Woloschuk had been working sessions at Toronto Sound for Terry Brown and he managed to convince Brown to produce Klaatu.Brown would develop the project, along with partner Doug Riley, and act as unofficial additional member of the band.Klaatu recorded its first song starting January 1st, 1973 with Long's rocking "Hanus Of Uranus".Over the months a second track was completed, "Sub Rosa Subway" and Brown managed to get a 7" single released through GRT Records.Long and Woloschuk up to this point had been using a session drummer, Whitey Glan, and soon realized that a permanent percussionist was needed if they were going to record any further, and in late 1974, Terry Draper was brought in and made his debut on the single "California Jam".Through the connection of Terry Brown's partner and Klaatu arranger Doug Riley (Dr.British or American than so be it.There was only one problem...Klaatu had decided they didn't want to appear in public, play live or give interviews to support their productions. The reaction was one of mild curiosity, but it did not fair well in the sales department. They decided on a weighty space concept album called 'Hope' and proceeded to England at the beginning of 1977 to have the London Symphony add their orchestrations to some Doug Riley arrangements.By March, Klaatu were to deliver the finished album to Capitol Records, despite Klaatu not being entirely happy with the final product.Steve Smith of the Providence Rhode Island Journal had hypothetically declared Klaatu the official reunion of the Beatles and the first album had started gaining national interest.Klaatu' sold out pressing after pressing...As an entire nation (plus Australia and Canada) had lost their minds, Klaatu were given the opportunity to rework the tracks on 'Hope' to make them more presentable.Within weeks, the Carpenters album 'Passages' featuring the song, and Klaatu's 'Hope' LP were riding the same charts.Star Trek motif while the rest of the world were becoming punks or John Travolta Studio 54 wannabes.Klaatu was at an impasse.During the recording process, Terry Brown and Klaatu had a dispute and the band let him go.The pressure of producing an opus as grandiose as 'Hope' had exhausted Woloschuk and so, he gave Long a free reign to have more songs on 'Sir Army Suit' (only two tunes of Long's appeared on 'Hope').Capitol and the band found this impractical and instead agreed to let Shadow Productions produce an animated TV special featuring 4 songs from the upcoming album and two Klaatu classics: "Calling Occupants" and "Sub Rosa Subway".Klaatu Is The Beatles' affair the previous year?Capitol Records by this time were increasingly tired of being told what to do by one of their own acts and threatened to pull the plug on the band unless they shipped up and delivered a radio friendly contemporary record.Barely able to afford to make demos, Klaatu were handed over to producer Christopher Bond who chose Klaatu's songs for recording, flew them to LA for 4 months at the end of 1979 and hired studio musicians Lee Sklar and Ed Greene to replace not only Draper in the recording process but, on many of the overdubs of Woloschuk and Long, Bond himself played guitar.Several deadlines for airing it on television had come and gone and the timeliness of the material seemed outdated.Meanwhile Klaatu's 4th album, 'Endangered Species', was released and deleted almost immediately due to the administrative changes going on at the time within Capitol LA.Klaatu's record deal expired shortly thereafter. Not willing to throw in the towel on a bad note (the band members distanced themselves from 'Endangered Species'), Klaatu negotiated a new deal with Capitol's field office in Canada. They would agree to finance and release a 5th LP on the condition that the band reveal their secret identities and go on tour.Long's ESP which he had opened with John Jones (Duran Duran, Alan Frew, Fleetwood Mac). The first leg of the tour, in November and December 1981, was opening for Prism.Klaatu, as it turned out, stole the show at nearly every gig (Prism would split up shortly after). With the opening slot under their belts, Klaatu learned more songs for a series of club dates around Ontario's Golden Horseshoe. But not before the departure of founding member Dee Long who was more interested in running his own studio than performing.Surrender bandmate Alfie Zappacosta on his solo material.McCracken would leave to join Wrabit in the summer time and was replaced by drummer Marty Morin (Goddo, Wireless).Alas, the cost of keeping 6 musicians on the road, the lack of high profile shows, and dwindling support from Capitol Records led Klaatu to abandon ship in August 1982.Woloschuk and Draper called it quits and Frank Davies had Capitol release a posthumous 'best of' called 'Klaasic Klaatu'.He did successfully record a children's album called 'Robotman' with producer Peter Shelley.Terry Draper formed a lounge duo with singer Jacqui Kroft before hanging up his keyboard to work steady as a roofer. In 1987 a TV production company in Germany required some work done on its hit Cop show 'Tatort', and the producer had just the song.Long thought it would be an easy project for Klaatu to knock off...The band briefly reunited in January 1988 to record "Woman" which was released as a single, but the song was a disappointing comeback and the band returned to their lives as before.Long packing up his gear and heading back to Canada for a proposed Klaatu reunion on the upcoming 'Peaks' hits package that was intended to have several brand new songs on it.This was not to be as the band was in a contractual battle with its new Canadian distributor, BEI.Klaatu revival began in 1995 as Permanent Press Recordings in the US was the first American label to issue 'Magentalane' anywhere other than Canada.Klaatu still maintains healthy enthusiasm from the fanbased Klaatu Audiophile Appreciation Society (KAAS) and royalties from appearances of their songs on CD compilations globally.Canada on Bullseye Records. Both Draper and Long have gone on to lucrative independent solo careers.Footage and audio
