The perception of loudness is related to both the intensity and duration of a sound.For long duration sounds loudness is often approximated by a power function with an exponent of 0.More precise measures have been subsequently made that show that loudness grows more rapidly (with a higher exponent) at low and high levels and less rapidly (with a lower exponent) at moderate levels.Loudness and hearing loss

NIIHARA, still devoted to soul music at the time, and Takasaki's childhood friend MASAYOSHI YAMASHITA as the band's bassist.LOUDNESS ensconced themselves in the studio in August, and three months later, the band's debut album, "THE BIRTHDAY EVE", hit the stores.The second LOUDNESS album, "DEVIL SOLDIER", was released in July 1982, followed by "THE LAW OF DEVIL'S LAND" in January 1983.Since there were no acclaimed heavy metal sound engineers in Japan at the time, the support of the American Daniel McClendon was enlisted for these recordings.Thanks to his contribution, the albums surpassed the quality expected from an Japanese rock act, and the band's style and technique established themselves.In July 1983, the band conducted their first American tour, followed by a European tour one month later.It was a dream come true for the band to record an album abroad.Julian Mendelsohn, known for his work on Yes' "90125", was enlisted as sound engineer.In August '84, LOUDNESS went special to them.The news came as a shock, not only to the Japanese but also to the international rock community.The result was the album "SOLDIER OF FORTUNE", followed by "ON THE PROWL" in February 1991, a compilation of cover versions of the band's earlier work, as well as a number of new songs.Vescera left soon after the arrival of "SLAP IN THE FACE" in October 1991, followed by Yamashita, and A widely used "rule of thumb" for the loudness of a particular sound is that the sound must be increased in intensity by a factor of ten for the sound to be perceived as twice as loud.Another way to state the rule is to say that the loudness doubles for every 10 phon increase in the sound loudness level.Although this rule is widely used, it must be emphasized that it is an approximate general statement based upon a great deal of investigation of average human hearing but it is not to be taken as a hard and fast rule.Why is it that doubling the sound intensity to the ear does not produce a dramatic increase in loudness?Nerve cells have maximum rates at which they can fire, and it appears that doubling the sound energy to the sensitive inner ear does not double the strength of the nerve signal to the brain.This is just a model, but it seems to correlate with the general observations which suggest that something like ten times the intensity is required to double the signal from the innner ear.One difficulty with this "rule of thumb" for loudness is that it is applicable only to adding loudness for identical sounds.Adding Loudness
When one sound is produced and another sound is added, the increase in loudness perceived depends upon its frequency relation to the first sound.Insight into this process can be obtained from the place theory of pitch perception.If the second sound is widely separated in pitch from the first, then they do not compete for the same nerve endings on the basilar membrane of the inner ear.Adding a second sound of equal loudness yields a total sound about twice as loud.But if the two sounds are close together in frequency, within a critical band, then the saturation effects in the organ of Corti are such that the perceived combined loudness is only slightly greater than either sound alone.This is the condition which leads to the commonly used rule of thumb for loudness addition.Critical Band
