2.Origins
Prima was born into a musical family in New Orleans.His older brother Leon was a well regarded local bandleader.American and from New Orleans.His singing and playing showed that he absorbed many of the same influences as his fellow Crescent City musician, Louis Armstrong, particularly in his hoarse voice and scat singing.In his youth, Prima played trumpet with Irving Fazola, his brother's band, and the pit band of the Saenger Theater before forming his own group, Louis Prima's New Orleans Gang.Prima's 1936 composition "Sing Sing Sing" became one of his biggest hits and one of the most covered standards of the swing era; Benny Goodman's performance of the song at Carnegie Hall with a featured performance by Gene Krupa on drums has become iconic.Louis Prima and His Band
Prima moved to Los Angeles to headline at the Famous Door nightclub.Prima and his Dixieland Gang continued to play club dates across the nation, including a 1939 stint at New York's Hickory House.Big bands were big business then, and Prima apparently bowed to pressure from booking agents and formed a conventional big band in 1940.Prima sang most of the band vocals, with Lily Ann Carol as the "girl singer."In the late 1940s he added singer Keely Smith (who was to become his fourth wife), and the band concentrated on novelty songs like "Civilization (Bongo Bongo Bongo)" and "All Right, Louis, Drop the Gun."Eventually he called up his friend Bill Miller, who was then entertainment director of The Sahara nightclub and casino in Las Vegas, and asked for a job.Prima telephoned saxophonist Sam Butera and instructed him to pick up a few musicians and go to Las Vegas in time for Prima's debut.Butera what the name of the band was.Their efforts were rewarded with a resurgence in their popularity, and they were at least partly responsible for making the lounge at The Sahara a hotspot.Smith actually had a fine sense of comedy that is often audible on the team's recordings; no matter how much the incorrigible Prima tried to disrupt her vocals, Smith would often come back with a funny remark of her own.Louis Prima and Keely Smith were very much the model for Sonny and Cher: the exuberant Italian musician and the serious, exotic female singer, Smith and Cher both being of Cherokee descent (although Cher's heritage is primarily Armenian).In 1959, Prima and Smith won the Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Vocal Group or Chorus for "That Old Black Magic."It was an attempt by Capitol Records to capture the essence of the Vegas act.They appeared in a few quickie musical films, including Senior Prom and Hey Boy!One night, he refused to conduct for one of Smith's performances, delegating to Butera instead.Later years
Following the divorce, he began dating Gia Maione.By this point, the band was putting out a markedly different and more contemporary sound, with electric organs and synthesizers.In 1967 Prima's distinctive voice and jazzy delivery landed him a role in Walt Disney's animated feature The Jungle Book, as the raucous orangutan King Louie.In 1975, following headaches and episodes of memory loss, Louis Prima sought medical attention, and found out he had a brain tumor.He went into a coma following surgery to remove the tumor.He never recovered, and died three years later, having been moved back to New Orleans.Ho" (from their album Fush Yu Mang), and covered "I Wanna Be Like You" for the soundtrack album of The Jungle Book 2."Buona Sera", which they dedicate to Prima's memory.Alex Harvey and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band also came under the spell of Louis Prima.Sam Butera and the Witnesses also continue to tour.This page was last modified 09:41, 20 December 2007.All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.Louis Prima was a trumpeter, band leader, singer, composer, and sometime film star.Robin Hood', which was a success for Les Brown in 1945.Also in 1945, Prima had engagements at Frank Dailey's Terrace Room in Newark New Jersey.He also wrote the 1947 Jo Stafford hit, 'A Sunday Kind Of Love'.After making an good impression in his feature film debut in the Bing Crosby movie musical Rhythm On The Range (1936), Prima continued to have relatively small, but telling roles in a number of other movies, notably Rose Of Washington Square (1939), in which he enhanced Alice Faye 's rendering of 'I'm Just Wild About Harry' with his ebullient and exciting trumpet accompaniment.Bottom Trousers' (vocal: Lily Ann Carol), and 'Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo)', an amusing novelty from the 1947 Broadway revue 'Angel In The Wings".After having a hit in 1950 with their joint composition 'Oh, Babe!July 13, 1953 and had two daughters,Toni Elizabeth and Luanne Frances.Keely was his fourth wife.During the next decade they were recognized as one of the hottest nightclub acts in the USA, and became known as 'The Wildest Show In Las Vegas'.Lake Tahoe in 1957, and released under the title of The Wildest, and they reassembled in 1959 for the feature Hey Boy!Prima Style' and Hey Boy!As a result of Phil Harris' and Prima's success with the Jungle Book movie, they cut two albums "The Jungle Book", on Disneyland records and "More Jungle Book".In the early 1970s Prima's act was no longer a crowd drawer as in the old days in Vegas, so he moved with Butera back to New Orleans, getting steady work for the tourist crowd.In October 1975 underwent surgery for the removal of a brain tumor.Disabled and incapable of communicating remained in a coma until in early July of 1978 he contracted pneumonia.Prima a strong willed man hung on for another six weeks until he died from complications due to the brain stem tumor on August 24, 1978 in a New Orleans nursing home.He is buried in the Metairie Cemetery in
