mainstream popularity in the UK in the late 1990s.They are known for their intelligent and often political lyrics and have a dedicated following.Although during the early part of their career they were regarded as a punk rock band, their music is now often generally regarded as alternative rock, due to changes in their sound.Richey James Edwards (Richey James, as he preferred to be known) mysteriously disappeared in 1995; his whereabouts are unknown.Isnardi, a previous girlfriend of Nicky, has also claimed to be the band's first singer. Her autobiographical book, In the Beginning, describes her life with the other band members around this time.Nicky switching from rhythm to bass guitar, and in 1989 they recorded their first single, "Suicide Alley".The cover was highly reminiscent of The Clash's first album (simply titled The Clash) and was photographed and designed by school friend Richey James Edwards. The four track EP New Art Riot attracted as much media interest for its attacks on fellow musicians as for the actual music. With the help of Hall Or Nothing management, the Manics signed to indie label Heavenly Records. In music press interviews they attacked bands like Slowdive (who Richey famously described as 'worse than Hitler'), Ride, and My Bloody Valentine, the crusty pop rockers (Carter USM, Senseless Things, Ned's Atomic Dustbin) as well as the dying Madchester movement (The Happy Mondays, The Farm, Stone Roses). The Manics' manifesto went as follows: release one album that would outsell Appetite for Destruction, tour the world, headline Wembley for three nights and then burn out.The band also had plans to release their first LP in a sandpaper covered sleeve, as The Durutti Column had already done, so that their music would burn (or scratch) out with them. They again displayed their huge cultural scope; the single sampled Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima as well as Iggy Pop.The video featured Nicky in drag as Marilyn Monroe and contained visual references to Betty Blue and Aleister Crowley."Culture, Alienation, Boredom And Despair"), was released on the Columbia Records imprint.Grunge Music explosion, making anything that whiffed of glam or heavy metal unfashionable overnight. The liner notes contained a literary quote for each of the album's eighteen songs (Albert Camus, Sylvia Plath, George Orwell among others) and the album lasted just over seventy minutes. The second album, Gold Against the Soul, was released to mixed reviews but still performed well, reaching number eight in the UK album chart, and displayed a more grungy sound.Vincent van Gogh based on Theo van Gogh's remark after his brother's suicide: 'The sadness will last forever'.The band also disposed of their glam slut punk image, adopting in its stead a more mainstream hard rock look, and their venomous attacks, though Nicky would still slag off other bands at gigs.He was admitted into The Priory in 1994, a private mental clinic to overcome his problems, and the band played a few festivals as a three piece to pay for his treatment.UK tour, but now took on a new meaning. The performance was extremely controversial at the time, as the band were all dressed in army regalia, with Bradfield wearing a terrorist style balaclava. At the time, the band was told by the BBC that they had received the most complaints ever. His car was found abandoned February 14, 1995 at the Severn View service station near the Severn Bridge, which has since its construction acquired notoriety for being a suicide spot.He was never seen again, although unsubstantiated sightings have been common, so much so that the band have even kept a percentage of the royalties aside should Edwards ever return. The band was put on hold for six months and calling it quits was seriously considered, but with the blessing of Edwards' family the other Manics went back to work.Edwards, was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The bulk of the lyrics were written solely by Wire including number two hit single "A Design for Life", which became a working class anthem, and established the band alongside the other premier British bands of the day like Oasis. We only want to get drunk' was intended as a scathing critique of those who believe working classes have no cultural or emotional depth. This line was wrongly adopted by many as a drinking anthem). This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours was just as successful across most of the world, and gave the band their first number one single in "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next".The album also included the hit singles "You Stole The Sun From My Heart", "Tsunami" and "The Everlasting".Despite receiving little to no promotion, the record hit the number one position on the UK Singles chart. In 2001 they became the first popular western rock band to play in Cuba, (at the Karl Marx theater) and met with president Fidel Castro. The song "Ocean Spray" was written by James about his mother's battle with cancer (she died in 1999).Other singles included "Let Robeson Sing".The greatest hits (plus remixes) album Forever Delayed was released in 2002.It was controversial with fans who claimed that it did not reflect the band's greatest songs but instead only featured the songs that charted well (although a look at the chart entries for singles included and excluded reveals that this is not completely true either). The album included the last song that was ever recorded when Edwards was still in the band, the previously unreleased "Judge Yr'self" that was intended to feature on the Judge Dredd movie soundtrack, as well as "Forever Delayed", a song the band had been playing at gigs throughout the year but had not been released.Musically, it was a great departure from the Manics' previous albums, though foreshadowed by "There By The Grace Of God".The album was followed by a UK Arena tour in December 2004, which featured a second guitarist backing up the band for the first time since Richey's disappearance. The decision although controversial, was generally welcomed by the fans and it has since become standard at shows for the band to have a second guitarist onstage. To thank the fans for coming, the band released an EP entitled God Save the Manics.Around 300 EPs were available and were given out before the gig to fans. However, some were just left in boxes and some fans took armfuls of the EPs, which surfaced on internet auction sites some time later. After all the copies were gone, the band made the EP available as a free download on their website, allowing fans who did not manage to get an EP to listen to the three previously unreleased tracks. In July 2005, the BBC's Newsnight conducted a cultural interest poll of their viewers, spanning topics such as albums, books, works of art, etc.The Holy Bible topped the album list, beating out OK Computer by Radiohead, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, and more.On the poll, Peter Barron (Newsnight editor) said "The biggest surprise was the triumph of The Holy Bible by the Manic Street Preachers, an album which I suspect most quintessential Newsnight employees have never heard. On Christmas Day 2005, the band posted on the official site an mp3 of Wire's new solo track "I Killed The Zeitgeist" free for download during the course of the entire day.Singles entitled "Break My Heart Slowly" from Wire and "That's No Way To Tell A Lie" from Bradfield were later premiered on radio.Bradfield's aforementioned debut single as well as album (entitled The Great Western) were released in July while Wire's single and debut album entitled I Killed The Zeitgeist were released in September.Manic Street Preachers performing at the 2007 V Festival."Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" to early tracks that the band had not played live in years, including "Born To End", "Sleepflower" and "Condemned to Rock 'n' Roll" (which was segued into a rendition of "Motown Junk")."Underdogs" from the new album was made available through the Manic Street Preacher's website on 19 March 2007.The first official single released from Send Away the Tigers was "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" which features Cardigans vocalist Nina Persson. The Japanese release of the album features 3 bonus tracks, "Love Letter To The Future", "Morning Comrades" and an acoustic version of "Send Away The Tigers" in addition to the uncredited "Working Class Hero" which features in all other releases. The band follow the likes of The Clash, New Order, and last year's winners, Primal Scream, in receiving the award. The band will be presented with the award at the NME Awards ceremony on February 28th, at the Indig02.For more details on this topic, see Manic Street Preachers discography. All the chart positions are for the UK.On the same day, at Southampon Guildhall, James from the band confirmed that Autumnsong would be the bands next single release. This page was last modified 13:47, 1 January 2008.All text is available Richey Edwards grew up in Blackwood, South Wales, where he attended Oakdale Comprehensive.University of Wales, Swansea and graduated with a 2:1 degree in political history. He has one sister named Rachel.Edwards was initially a driver and roadie for Manic Street Preachers, but he soon became accepted as the band's main spokesman and fourth member.Manic Street Preachers was in the words and design.More often than not he was miming on the guitar during early live performances, but was, along with bassist Nicky Wire, principal lyricist.Despite Richey's lack of musical input, he nevertheless contributed to their overall musical direction, and according to the rest of the band on the Everything Must Go DVD, he played a leading role in deciding the approach of the band's sound. It is possible that had he not disappeared, the album that would have followed The Holy Bible would have been dramatically different from the melodic, accessible rock heard on Everything Must Go, Edwards having expressed a desire to create a concept album described as "Pantera meets Nine Inch Nails meets Screamadelica".However, Bradfield has since expressed doubts over whether the band would have produced such an album: "...There would have been an impasse in the band for the first time born out of taste..."The NME discussion as to whether to publish this image was a bonus track on "Suicide Is Painless".In 1991 he gained notoriety following an argument with NME journalist Steve Lamacq, who questioned the band's authenticity and values, keen to ensure the punk ethic was not abused, after a gig at the Norwich Arts Centre.Edwards responded by carving the words "4 Real" into his forearm with a razor blade he was carrying. When I was young I just wanted to be noticed.Nothing could excite me except attention so I'd dress up as much as I could.Outrage and boredom just go hand in hand."All the little things that might have been annoying me suddenly seem so trivial because I'm concentrating on the pain.I'm not a person who can scream and shout so this is my only outlet. It's all done very logically."His problems with eating and alcohol were well documented, and he was, according to Nicky Wire, "on the verge of anorexia" when he was at his worst.Europe with Suede and Therapy?Edwards' final live appearance with the band was at the London Astoria, on the 21 December 1994.Disappearance
Edwards disappeared on 1 February 1995, on the day that he and James Dean Bradfield were due to fly to the U.On 14 February Richey's Vauxhall Cavalier received a parking ticket at the Severn View service station, and on the 17 February the car was reported as abandoned. In his book Everything (A Book About Manic Street Preachers), Simon Price states that aspects of the investigation were "far from satisfactory."Price also records Edwards' sister Rachel as having "hit out at police handling" after CCTV footage was analysed two years after the disappearance. While his family had the option of declaring him legally dead from 2002, they have chosen not to, and his status remains open as a missing person.Literature and other cultural influences
As well as an interest in music, Edwards' other love was literature. He chose many of the quotes that appear on Manics records and would often refer to writers and poets during interviews. This interest in literature has remained as integral to the band's appeal as their music. Many of them, like Kurt Cobain, Ian Curtis and Sylvia Plath, committed suicide at a young age following a short but exceptionally productive life; J."Fans keep hopes alive for missing Manic", The Guardian, February 1, 2005, pp."The lost boys", The Guardian, 28 January 2000.The Sunday Mirror, 2 June 1996, pp."Living With Ghosts", Sunday Herald, 30 January 2005, pp.Manic", BBC, 1 February 2005.Everything (A Book About Manic Street Preachers), first edition, Virgin Publishing.National Missing Persons official site

Nicky Wire (Bass) Sean Moore (Drums)Sounds LikeManics! The Manic Street Preachers have been through a process of destroying what we are.So, for Send Away The Tigers, we've been listening back to Everything Must Go and even the youthful idealism of Generation Terrorists, placing ourselves back at being 18 or 21 again, and reconnecting with all the things that made us so excited back then.Send Away The Tigers isn't a high concept album, but the theory behind it is important. When we started this album it was the three of us, in a rehearsal room, making a right old racket.Sometimes you have to learn from your own past.We began writing for the album in late 2005, and began recording in earnest in March 2006 with Dave Eringa.Doing the solo albums has been really important and really helpful in terms of letting us do the albums we wanted to do in a vain kind of way.Technicolor moment of the Sex Pistols being so hilarious, as well as serious. We've denied it for a long time. And on this album, we've gone back to source. We never contemplated splitting. But there was a general malaise. We've just announced our tour and this is the fastest our tickets have sold out in about ten years.Send Away The Tigers is a phrase the comedian Tony Hancock used whenever he started drinking. Now his life is utterly ruined.Killed The Zeitgeist gave me an opportunity to embrace nihilism in all its beauty.Because you do get scared, when everything around you is so on the surface and light.Every alternative band has just been sucked into nothingness. The Guilty Pleasures thing has also had a bearing, especially with James who knows Sean Rowley very well.We love classic radio records by The Eagles, Boston and REO Speedwagon, and we wanted to get back to that, but with our obvious lyrical bent.James was really trying to deconstruct that song at one point because it was so obvious that it was Sweet Child O' Mine and Aerosmith's I See You Crying. From that moment on, we didn't really have to work on anything.Paradise City and get up on the Marshall stacks.Things that give you the power to go outside and believe you can actually do something.Being in a rock 'n' roll band is just a euphoric kick.Sean has written a lot more of the music with James this time around. And I wrote half of the music for the first single, Your Love Alone Is Not Enough, which features Nina Persson of The Cardigans, who I think are one of the great underrated bands and I love her voice. We need all these elements for any country to be coherent. There are just too many people I've known who have killed themselves.Another fucking song about suicide!Whether its suicide or not, obviously, we don't know.Could someone have done more?Which they got hold of somehow, which is even weirder, and this place is above the law, and then they take it to the sky, which is also above the law. It's such a bizarre concept for a country that prides itself on this mythical bullshit called "the rule of law".If you get it, you get it.But if you don't, you don't.Imperial Bodybags is another view of America. Not everyone is an American Idiot. It's also about the massacre of the Russian royal family in the Bolshevik revolution. As you get older you wonder if it's just one evil replacing another.Plastic Ono Band when I was doing my solo album. And it just seemed really applicable. That's the purpose, really. There's no point carrying on if we don't.The lyrics are really joyous and uplifting. When the three of us are together, there's no real feeling like it that we can get anywhere else. You can say anything no matter how foul or bad and no one takes it that seriously, you work things out together. On this record, James is trying to fit a lot of words into a line again. On Send Away The Tigers he's literally out of breath by the time he gets to the chorus.Because when we don't worry, we make If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next which is our biggest song round the world. And it's impossible to understand that record.Thank you so much for the add!Happy new year to all of you!Say Goodbye Last year 2007 , Remember everything of good and Forget everything of bad in 2007.......Sincere Happy New
