Mike Stern at Verviers 2006.Mike Stern (born January 10, 1953) is an American jazz guitarist.History At the Berklee College of Music in Boston his focus shifted to jazz. Two years later he joined Miles Davis group, making his public debut on June 27, 1981 at the Kix nightclub in Boston (a performance that was documented on the CBS live album, We Want Miles). He remained with Davis through 1983,.From 1983 to 1984 he toured in Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth band and in 1985 he returned to Davis for a second tour of duty that lasted close to a year. His solo debut, Upside Downside, was released on Atlantic Records in 1986 It features performances by Pastorius, David Sanborn and Bob Berg. From 1986 through 1988, Mike was a member of Michael Brecker's potent quintet, appearing on Don't Try This At Home.Stern's second Atlantic album, 1988's Time In Place, featured Peter Erskine on drums, Jim Beard on keyboards, Jeff Andrews on bass, Don Alias on percussion and Don Grolnick on organ. He followed with 1989's Jigsaw, which was produced by fellow guitarist Steve Khan and included Mike's menacing Miles Davis tribute, "Chief".In 1989, Stern formed a cooperative touring group with Bob Berg that also included drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Lincoln Goines. They remained a working unit through 1992 and are featured on Mike's Atlantic release, Odds Or Evens.Stern joined a reunited Brecker Brothers Band in 1992 and became a factor in the success of that popular group for the next two years. He followed that up with 1994's Is What It Is and 1996's Between The Lines, both of which received Grammy nominations. In 1997, Stern returned to a jazzier aesthetic with Give And Take, a looser, more spontaneous session featuring bassist John Patitucci, drummer Jack DeJohnette, percussionist Don Alias and special guests Michael Brecker and David Sanborn.Mike Stern signature model was manufactured by Yamaha as part of their Pacifica range. The guitar is based on Mike's heavily modified Fender Telecaster. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.MIKE STERN "These Times" label: ESC Records cat.On These TimesMike Stern joins forces with stellar saxophonist Kenny Garrett (a fellow Miles Davis alumnus), drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and a string of stellar bass players in Will Lee, Victor Wooten and Richard Bona. And that kind of energy you can kind of grab onto and go from there, which is what happened in the studio this time out."One of the goals for These Times", says Stern, "was to balance that excitable raw energy of a live performance with the production values necessary to build pieces to dramatic peaks. And that successful balance is due in large part to Jim Beard. He preserves the raw vibe of the live playing but is really great at building up the tracks from there".These Times opens with the slamming "Chatter", the title being a reference to a term that has become increasingly familiar in these troubled times.New Orleans second line groove provided by drummer Colaiuta. As Stern explains, "this was loosely inspired by (Pakistani qawwali singer) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who I had been listening to a lot during the time of this recording.Middle Eastern melody and a second line feel underneath. Also, Arto brings a lot to the whole thing with his vocals at the very beginning of the piece. And Vinnie sounds great on this tune.Voices but that was almost more of a supportive role for him.Flecktones had just formed. It was very fresh sounding and I was just amazed at what Bela could do on the banjo. But when I heard them again more recently, a couple of years ago at a nightclub in New York, I was just blown away. And so I would ask Bela from time to time about doing some recording together and we were finally able to do this one piece for this album".Police kind of feel to it.Elizabeth sounds great on it.And I think Bob Franceschini also really shines here.Richard to write lyrics for one of the ballads and this is the one he thought he could definitely write for.His lyrics describe how as a boy he was going to go someplace with some friends.Richard sings it beautifully".Indian flavored thing that Arto puts on it.And Bob Malach kills on this tune".So it just felt like an obvious choice to me to name it in memory of Bob".With those cats you just kind of solo real quick and get out of the way.And together, these guys are scary".By overdubbing several tracks of harmony vocals, Bona creates the uplifting sweep of a full choir as the piece gradually builds to a more dramatic crescendo. And as Mike points out, "Richard plays some smaller percussion on the first part and then at the end Don Alias adds a bunch of bigger drums to really build the sound to by the time it fades out with the guitar solo it sounds huge.Mike really erupts on this urgent workout. These Times is another triumphant blend of searing chops, engaging melodies and infectious grooves, enhanced by the inspiring sound of the human voice in all its glory. After growing up in Washington D.Mike moved to New York City and was recruited by Miles Davis and played a key role in his celebrated comeback band of 1981 (which also included bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, percussionist Mino Cinelu and saxophonist Bill Evans). From 1983 to 1984, he toured with Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth band and in 1985 returned to Miles' lineup for a second tour of duty that lasted close to a year.In the summer of 1986, Stern went out on the road with David Sanborn and later joined an electrified edition of Steps Ahead which featured Mike Mainieri on midi vibes, Michael Brecker on the Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI), Darryl Jones on electric bass and Steve Smith on drums.Neesh) before making his debut on Atlantic Records in 1986 with Upside Downside, featuring such celebrated colleagues as Sanborn, Pastorius, saxophonist Bob Berg, bassists Mark Egan and Jeff Andrews, keyboardist Mitch Forman and drummers Dave Weckl and Steve Jordan. He followed that in succession with 1989's Jigsaw and 1991's Odds Or Evens, both of which ably showcased his legendary guitar prowess and musicality.During this period he also formed a touring group with saxophonist Berg that included drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Lincoln Goines. They remained a working unit from 1989 to 1992, at which point Stern joined a reunited Brecker Brothers Band (he appears on 1992's Return of the Brecker Brothers).Mike's acclaimed 1993 Atlantic Jazz release, Standards (And Other Songs), led to him being named Best Jazz Guitarist of the Year by the readers and critics of Guitar Player magazine. In 1997, Stern recorded Give And Take with bassist John Patitucci, drummer Jack DeJohnette, percussionist Don Alias and special guests Michael Brecker and David Sanborn.Mike earn the Orville W.Bill Frisell and John Scofield that was appropriately titled Play. For booking, contact: EMMECI."Are you sure you want to block this user? You must set your browser and the instrumentation are virtually unchanged from Upside Downside and Time in Place.Thankfully, since this cd, Stern has developed somewhat and avoided monotony.Time in Place (superior songs) and Upside Downside (has Jaco on one cut and a slightly different feel)."Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.Your vote will be counted and will appear on the product page within also has the sense to run with the solo different from how a rock guitarist would by improvising his notes like a jazzman. His wood hardbody electric guitar that he features on the cover of the CD has such an interesting sound. Its tone is hard to describe, just listen to it for yourself. He rocks as hard as any jazz guitarist i've heard.Buy the CD, because one of the songs is cut out of the tape tenure in the Miles Davis in the early eighties. It was this album that really displayed the full scope of his talents. As pal Brecker put it, "Sten is a prolific composer."This album really displays his talents as both a composer and player as well as any.Stern's guitar sings on the ballads, and is smoking hot on numbers like Scuffle. Was this review helpful to you?Maybe I'm biased since Dave
