Everyone range from shimmering pastoral drones to dense and hypnotic electronic tides joined by tribal clatter, vocal experimentation, skittery free improv, tape loop hallucinations, and ghostly folksy strum. The field recordings, otherworldy sounds and drones, and cinematic terrain take this into a kind of Sun City GIrls meets Sunroof!Z'ev and who else but Stephen O'Malley, that dark prince of abstracted metal guitar.O'Malley, recorded and captured as the source material. They get pretty noisy at times, but for the most part Magistral is pure blackened drone, nowhere as harsh and metallic as O'Malley's recent KTL recordings with Pita, instead leaning far more to the cavernous deathdrift of Lustmord or Yen Pox.Speedy, feral noise with diseased vocals and ripping riffs.Fans of AGATHOCLES and UNHOLY GRAVE style raw grind will particularly dig this fetid blast of highspeed scum."Long Way Home" that stands as one of the heaviest noise jams in my collection.YOB and Dead Meadow, weird and sorta processed, the songs bulldozing along into climactic meltdown.Sleep and Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Hawkwind, well, this isn't a bad place at all to start with in terms of experiencing the awesomeness that is Mammatus!Grindcore that delivers the groceries...Amusing Anecdotes For The Depraved is a collection of tracks excavated from extremely rare cult demos, split releases, and unreleased songs that fans of brutal grinddrill ( The Berzerker, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Wadge ) will definitely find satisfying. But this shit is absolutely essential for MITB fans that don't want to shell out the crazy dough on Ebay to get their hands on all of this nuclear tuneage.Man Is The Bastard, and they still rank as one of our favorite hardcore bands ever...Man Is the Bastard's freaked out, jazzy exploratory hardcore.Packaged in a black digisleeve with xeroxed 11x17 insert sheet.Man Is the Bastard's freaked out, jazzy, exploratory hardcore.Totally fucking essential for fans of true extreme hardcore.Jamal, the author, journalist, activist, and death row inmate convicted of the murder of a police officer in Philadelphia in 1981, followed by four tracks from legendary West Coast powerviolence masters Man Is The Bastard.Blast as we want to offer everything that is still in print from Man Is The Bastard.Just over 20 minutes of exclusive MITB awesomeness, some of their jazziest stuff ever recorded.Kayo Dot, and huge production. We can't wait for the full length. From the somewhat serene cover photo of Mr.Marhaug's dense storms of smoking amplifier skree and obliterated drone riffs like steel plated tentacles.Voice and, perhaps surprisingly, Banjo (an unusual choice for Martyn Bates), are the principal instruments that carry this music, a skeletal, simplistic music, deftly coloured and fleshed out by inventive use of Autoharp, Percussion, Whistles and Pump Organ. Here is the 1999 contribution from Japanese noise legend Masonna to RRR's infamous Recycled Music Series cassette series, this one possessing some of his sickest throat exorcisms yet. Each is one of a kind, as the nature of dubbed cassettes allow for glimmers of the original audio content to often bleed into the crushing noise assault that has been dubbed onto the tape.THE MASS continues to evolve its cryptic heaviosity.YOU BLACK EMPORER, and ISIS.Crucial Blast, we blew through them in less than a week.Their music is really hard to come by here in the US, so we're not expecting these to sit around for too long, either.Napalm Death, Samiam, Melt Banana, Mr.Second full length from Austrian grind band MASTIC SCUM.Iehn Tale presents eight tracks of clustered piano melodies that are decomposed and layered into gauzy sheets of elegiac drone...There's a hazy, buried, twilight beauty to this album that situates it next to Tim Hecker's Mirages and Final's 3, hence getting highest recommendations from us!Slow, meditative and very very beautiful, these pieces are the sound of grey light on overcast days and of silent empty churches.HEAVEN SHALL BURN and YEAR OF OUR LORD.Really, this is barely black metal, as this 2005 full length expands beyond any genre boundries. And remember when we mentioned Sigh?Sigh's keyboardist Mirai drops some guest keyboard solos on this, too.The Meads, and it might be even more freaked out.And certainly one of the most fucked up and mind melting.Features guest appearances from members of Sigh and Hawkwind."One More" and "50 Years", and even a bluesy instrumental ("Blue") that sounds like a mutant outtake from Zeppelin's III.The last track "Crawl" is the album's zenith, a nearly 10 minute masterpiece of strangely processed sludge riffs winding around an eerie, alien electronic melody while triumphant cosmic bagpipes herald the arrival of a crushing, ridiculously catchy riff that rides the dawnfire; the last five minutes of the song dissipate into a shimmering cloud of vibrating Arabic guitar drones and ethereal electronic hum that reminds me of an even trippier Growing.Neurosis, Today Is The Day and Unsane fused together with a malfunctioning computer system ejaculating psychotronic fractal noise.Forcefield with rhythmic pulses and phased out psychedelic noise, and bridges the lysergic skronk mantras of early Boredoms with the crude splatter rituals of the noise cassette underground.PILOT, DISCORDANCE AXIS, PENCILNECK, KILLOUT TRASH, XEROBOT, TARGET SHOPPERS, STILLUPPSTEYPA, and PLAINFIELD, the Untitled (Piano One) 7", the Eleventh 7", the Dead Spex 7", and the It's In The Pillcase 7".NEW MELT BANANA ALBUM !!!Bambi's Dilemma, which the band has been referring to as a more "rock" orientated release. So what's my take on this?Absolutely awesome and addictive, as hyperfast and heavy and CRAZED as anything they have done before, but even catchier and poppier and weirder than ever. The new MELT BANANA ALBUM on wax !!!"Dog Song" is one of the weirdest MxBx songs ever, a brilliant, sweetly catchy punk song with Yasuko switching between poppy singing and imitating a crazed dog?Yasuko channeling Laurie Anderson over the stuttering noisewave, ending the album on a dark, threatening note. Can't recommend Bambi's Dilemma enough, for real.MEGA CATCHY hooks, and cosmic guitar eruptions.Imagine hyperspeed power violence as played by anime cartoon characters on crack.Melt Banana followed their Wedge EP on Slap A Ham with 1998's Charlie, their most conceptual album, which captures Melt Banana in transition from hyperactive no wave grind unit to a mystical, Dadaist thrashcore ensemble with insane song arrangements delivered with laser guided precision and an advanced use of electronics for increased freakout. The vinyl version of Melt Banana's mindblowing Charlie!Melt Banana followed their Wedge EP on Slap A Ham with 1998's Charlie, their most conceptual album, which captures Melt Banana in transition from hyperactive no wave grind unit to a mystical, Dadaist thrashcore ensemble with insane song arrangements delivered with laser guided precision and an advanced use of electronics for increased freakout.Bungle that helped mark the band's entrance into the wider public eye.One of the greatest, most inventive Hardcore bands ever.HG Fact THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.DJ scratching 3 different records, a laser gun going off, and an unstoppable thrashcore riff machine.Dead Mind inhabitants DEAD HUSBANDS..."You've Never Been Right", and the avalanche of tom rolls that finishes off the mutoid arena rock of "Civilized Worm".Melvins album and just get bludgeoned by a nonstop battery of sludgy speaker blowing metallic rock.Melvins, then this is an essential addition to the library: packaged in a bright blue case with bizarre covert art featuring a fruit basket, this is where the songs became longer, the riffs even heavier yet catchier...."It's Shoved", the stuttering force of "Zodiac"....This is from when Lorax was on bass, and the lineup is thunderous. If you've been following the Melvin's for awhile, you know that those dudes love KISS.Dale's entry is easily the catchiest and most accessible disc of the trilogy, the songs "Hex Me", "Dead Wipe", "Respite", and "Hurter" combining into a droney, hypnotic slab of darkened sludge pop.If yer a regular over here, you've no doubt noticed that we are HUGE Joe Preston fans.Starting off with low, rumbling feedback drones and stretched out metal powerchords suspended in space, the track slooowly shifts and turns with crushing ominous sludge drone and distant, elephantine tympani strikes, sounding exactly like what Sunn O))) were doing on their 00 Void album, but with those monstrous, distorted drum explosions and Preston's weird electronic sounds making it even heavier.Buzzo's veiled vocals enter."Annum" appropriates part of the key riff from "White Rabbit" and crafts a tense, understated pop song. It's actually Dave Grohl from Nirvana and Foo Fighters, who also played drums on this disc, going under the name "Dale Nixon" due to legal issues with Nirvana's label, Geffen.Almost 20 years later, this is still some of the heaviest shit you'll ever hear.Mudhoney Matt Lukin on bass. And Adam Jones from TOOL shows up on a bunch of these tracks with atmospheric guitar noise. And to top it off, the album jacket feature original illustrations from the awesome dark cartoonist Camille Rose Garcia, whose weird, creepy artwork is a perfect accompaniment to the music.Blast), which combined brutal noisy rock sprung from the seed of Am Rep's heaviest with an apocalyptic metallic mightiness. They've gotten even heavier with their new album A Story Of Blood And Violence, their first new disc in 3 years, still centered around a crushing battery of eerie endtime dirges and slithering dissonant riffage.Nico's vocals for Membrane, too, a gruff, warbly throaty scream that at times almost sounds like a cross between Tom Araya from Slayer and freakin' Tom Waites.Unsane's "Sick", which rules.Internal Void to drop another hammer on us.Merzbow material, probably one of the best of the entire Akita output in this style.Opening with the rumbly croak of a single frog, Masami Akita's epic Frog morphs into a series of ultra grooving loops of grinding distortion that borders on crushing Industrial, reminding me alot of the Batztoutai album but much heavier, thick crunchy maelstroms of digital distortion destruction, pummeling white noise, and buzzing metallic insect chirps swirling together with processed recordings of frog croaks.Sunn O))) powerchord trapped in an eternal loop.FX and alien percussion sounds.Towards the end, Masami Akita begins to incorporate livestock sounds to chilling effect.Masami Akita comes from his "laptop era", and sees him mutating rock riffs and songs into storms of repetitious melody and loops of swarming locust electronics.Definitely our favorite album from Merzbow's laptop era.The Merzbow track is pretty abrasive analogue material recorded in 1994, and bathes you in whooshing electronic textures and screaming feedback that morphs about halfway through into a brutal, almost funky rhythmic loop that sounds like it was cobbled out of snippets of death metal riffage and thudding drumbeats...LP boxset), Merzbow Loves Emil Beaulieau finds Merzbow's Masami Akita creating extreme analogue tension from extremely unpredictable volume bursts of nuclear distortion screech situated between moments of uneasy calm.Released as part of the Pure series. Some scarce samples, echoed and distorted, are used from time to time, bringing back a bit of life to the empty spaces depicted by the music.Another new one from Al at At War With False Noise!Scottish duo Messiah Complex, assembled in a run of 100 copies and bound to a simple xeroxed sheet that is painted in ghoulish toner overload...If you've been digging any of that blackened deathdrone stuff from Nuentoter Der Plage, you gotta check this one out.Like Ron's other projects, one of the highlights of this freeform freakishness is the total assault these guys put on their instruments, ripping sonics out of a saxophone and guitar that are downright demonic.European metalcore we've been unearthing recently?Hydra Head chaotic metalcore thing, and doing so far better than pretty much anyone here in the US.Maybe out favorite Radar Swarm release to date? And from what we can glean, the title roughly translates to "Our Love is Powerful Enough to Destroy This Whore of a World", which might just fall into our list of top twenty favorite album titles ever.Isis guitarist Mike Gallagher whose name you might recognize as a reference to Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five.Neurosis or Isis parts ripped free from their tribal rhythms and set free to float skyward, gorgeous notes ringing out over huge fields of pulsating drone, piano, and shimmering dark electronic ambience.Greg Burns from Red Sparowes adds some subtle, haunting pedal steel to the first track, and murky, distant programmed beats appear in the distance on the fourth track courtesy of Octopus from Dalek, the minimal hazy rhythms hard to make out through the ever shifting haze of twilight fuzz and whirr. This is a breathtaking album, further enhanced by Gallagher's beautiful photography of twilight skies and storms looming in the distance that are collected in the accompanying booklet.Luttenbachers and The Locust.Killer stuff, packaged in a red case with minimalist packaging. The B side sports four bars of a Bach fugue etched directly into the vinyl. The booklet sheds little light on what the hell is going on here.Drummer Mara performs so insanely fast, you gotta hear it to believe it.Limited to 150 copies and enclosed in a miniature DVD style case, Cracks In The Void is the first release from the Finnish project Mockingwyrd, whose two lengthy tracks of rumbling, melodic ambient dronesludge are created from a single bass guitar.Dephine Knormal Musik THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.Staiano, avant percussionist extraordinaire and former member of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.Ron and friends splatter the room with all sorts of noise guitar skronk and electronic noise. We've got, like, two of these in stock!SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM and IDIOT FLESH conspirator) Moe!These are the debut recordings (from 2002) of the high energy Moe!"Gusano De Fuego", and you get one killer sludge metal album that'll satisfy yer urge for maximum tarpit riffage.Witchy cello skree from Fred Lonberg Holm accentuates some seizure inducing piano fucking.Don't let the cutesy cover and iconography fool you, with its childlike text scrawl, playfully crude upside down crosses, and Seripop style doodling..."Les Lumieres" have been blown out, which makes up the entire second disc is the pinnacle, is an incredible dirge that builds into a minimal, monstrously heavy repetitious melodic riff that achieves total beauty. The disc starts off with Elysium's blasting destruction, four songs in six minutes, shredding though a blastbeat splattered holocaust of Infest style vocals, hyperspeed drumming, and buzzsaw thrash riffs spewed out at 700 miles per hour.Monde Bruit is actually one Shohei Iwasaki, who uses Digitech effects pedals to generate, chop up, and orchestrate swarms of carnivorous feedback particles that squrim en masse out of your speakers.Toshiji Mikawa of Incapacitants.Eleven tracks of intense noise rock (with the emphasis on noise) with bass guitar and drums falling into utterly fucked sludgy circular grooves that repeat endlessly, over and over, while severe sax squeal and brutal laptop electronics and assorted improvised noise battle for oxygen.Lightning Bolt's frenzied rhythms. The first part is very free, with some wonderfully abusive sax blowing.Really great free jazz that fans of Coltrane and ESP Records will dig.Monster X never promoted straight edge as anything but positive and liberating.MOONSHINE starts sounding like a ragged, ghostly COWBOY JUNKIES, right before unleashing monster doomcrust riffs again in a thunderstorm of amp damage and gooey blastbeats.Another hugely dope black metal offering from Southern Lord.CD from MORTUARY HACKING SESSION.And you can't really go wrong with a CD that closes with a track called "Boys Drool, Girls Decapitate".Hyper spastic leads and squealing dive bombs fly back and forth, multitracked into oblivion (I think, otherwise this guy is one of the best shredders on the planet!!And they do an instrumental ode to Ossorio's "Blind Dead" series!Carcass riffage and unexpected stoner rock riffs over drum machine blastbeats that sound exactly like a couple of jackhammers going full blast, with ridiculously formless and gross vocals sounds that are electronically processed and manipulated into blurts of psychedelic bubbling, gurgling gore noise.Industrial and spaced out, primitive techno.Czech Republic like Contrastic and Mincing Fury, Mortuary Hacking Session is like a brain damaged mashup of Cannibal Corpse, outsider bedroom casio experiments, and Genghis Tron's Cloak Of Love.Every once in a while Mortuus does rip into some savage blastbeat drumming and torrents of atonal black riffage, like the beginning of "Astral Pandemonium" or the closing blast storm of "The Illumination of Job"; but De Contemplanda Mort works primarily as an exceedingly somber and ghoulish funeral march through overgrown graveyards and crumbling crypt walls, which the band paints with slow, metronomic drumming, dark synthesizer textures, depressing grave melodies and crushing doom riffage strummed out of bleary guitars, and the singer's demonic deathrasp soaked in echo and ringing off of the disintegrating tomb walls. The album reminds me a bit of old school Dutch suicide metallers Deinonychus, but Mortuus have a much more prominent Scandinavian BM sound behind their depressing epic slog.Dark Holler THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.Timothy, Revelator and Alicia have worked together in the past (Mourning Cloak, Breathe Stone), but never so extensively.Moth Masque is an album of love songs through the eyes of moths.Or, perhaps, moth songs through the eyes of love.Negative Reaction split, albums from the The Knell and Funeralium, some of which are listed in this week's update, And all of 'em deliver, in one form or another, punishing slow motion heaviness from the bleaker, more funereal end of the doom metal spectrum.Translation Loss THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.Out of the ashes of RUNE come MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT, whose debut "Time And Withering" is a surprising and epic foray into grinding, gorgeous melodic crunch.MOTA utilize the best of both worlds throughout these songs: panoramic Ennio Morricone style slide guitar ambience, massive droning riffs that bulldoze everything before them, spacey quiet interludes.Rune personnel among their ranks.Neurosis influences that the band had been working with on their full length into new realms of melodic heaviness.Explosions In The Sky, with wistful melodies and atmospheric crescendos. Both bands are pretty crucial for anyone into the sounds of Pelican, Tides, Disappearer, Isis, Conifer, etc.Japanese harsh noise legend MSBR, aka Koji Tano, who sadly passed away in 2005.Longtime fans of heavy Japanese electronics are probably well acquantied with M.Tokyo noise scene of the 1990's, and he released an avalanche of limited edition cassettes, albums, compilation tracks and collaborations with The Haters, Richard Ramirez, Bastard Noise, Beequeen, and Small Cruel Party that pretty much all ruled.Corrupted, Khanate, Sunn O))), etc.As bleak and apocalyptic as Mrtyu! The sound is a mix of back woods New Zealand and modern urban decay.MRTYU, and this tape drops two major jams on our skulls. The tape totals 30 minutes, and if you were into that awesome double CD from Mrtyu on 20 Buck Spin, you gotta dunk your head into this vat of ritualistic, transcendant doomsludge rumble.Released in an edition of 120 copies.Gross sludgecore from this defunct Virginia Beach outfit that's documented here with thirteen tracks of sickening, tortured bluesy sludge boogie in the vein of Eyehategod, Cavity, Weedeater, and especially Buzzov*en...Southern metallic vomit sound we dig so much around here. The newest dose of extremely dark ambient from Murderous Vision.Incredible production, evocatively package...This release was composed very slowly over the course of two years.Utilizing field recordings of hypnotic rhythms from an ancient gas meter in McGinley's basement, old telephone feedback recordings, and more, these environmental sound pieces blend slowly from one to the next.Debut full length from one of the finest Japanese hardcore thrash bands around.Hakodate City's MUSTANG play rough, blazing traditional Japanese hardcore with a strong rock influence.Toilet bowl vocals, zero melody, technical riffage, and juicy, carnivorous grooves.Russian label that we just recently stumbled across after J.Blade Runner style urban nightmares via the repetitive, undulating beats.Deeply submerged techno pulses throb from several miles away while theremins chant softly.CDs we have reviewed in this weeks newsletter, The Second Confession is packaged in a super cool, unique oversized thick cardboard case with silkscreened, handassembled printing and full color cover art.Mykado can deliver actual riffs, making this way more memorable than most of the bands out there doing this sort of stuff, and all of the shifts in style are seamless, and not the trainwreck you might normally expect from this style of music.Dutch blasters MY MINDS MINE unleashe 48 tracks taken from all of their vinyl output released through the years, delivering unbelieveably fast, devastating high octane grindcore reminiscent of old S.Add some pretty instrumentals, sounds of rain and forests and waves, and what sounds like a harpsichord...Well, we've got this follow up disc from Mystic Forest, and it rules.Green Hell (which we also carry), and boasting fuller production than previous work, this is still very twisted, very haunting, and ULTRA catchy...Stefan Kozak plays everything in Mystic Forest, and is only augmented by some additional female vocals on this album)!
