It is often ceramic, but many other materials, such as plastic, wood, glass, clay, and metal, may also be used.Ancient History The ocarina is a very old family of instruments, believed to date back some 12,000 years. For the Chinese, the instrument played an important role in their long history of song and dance. The ocarina has similar features to the Xun, another important Chinese instrument. Both the Mayans and Aztecs had produced versions of the ocarina, but it was the Aztecs who brought the song and dance that accompanied the ocarina to Europe. The ocarina went on to become popular in European communities as a toy instrument.Giuseppe Donati, Italian inventor of the modern ocarina, with his work. Its common use in the Western countries dates to the 19th century in Budrio, a town near Bologna, Italy, where Giuseppe Donati transformed the ocarina from a toy, which only played a few notes, into a more comprehensive instrument (known as the first "classical" ocarinas). The word ocarina is derived from Italian meaning "little goose."The earlier form was known in Europe as a gemshorn; which was made from animal horns.Budrio continues its tradition in the form of the Fabio Menaglio ocarina workshops, which produce a full range of professional instruments."Gruppo Ocarinistico Budriese" (since 1865).During World War II, American soldiers were issued plastic ocarinas by the U.In 1998 Nintendo released the video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.In the game, the story follows a young boy, Link, in his quest to save the land of Hyrule from the evil Gerudo King Ganondorf. In the game, Link receives a magical Ocarina from Zelda the princess of Hyrule. The Ocarina aids Link in his quest throughout Hyrule with magical songs that complete various tasks.Today the ocarina is most developed and popular in Korea and Japan, as well as in Italy where an annual ocarina festival is held.Professional musicians who play the ocarina include: Nancy Rumbel, Kenji Ogawa, Osawa Satoshi, Nomura Sojiro and Paolo Gavelli.Acoustics How an ocarina works: 1.Air enters through the windway 2.Air vibrates throughout the inside of the ocarina 4.Covering and uncovering holes lowers and raises the pitch The ocarina, like other vessel flutes, has the unusual quality of not relying on the pipe length to produce a particular tone.Since an ocarina is a Helmholtz resonator, the frequency of the tone played is: Where v is the speed of sound, A is the total uncovered area and V is the enclosed volume. The resonator in the ocarina can create overtones, but because of the common "egg" shape, these overtones are many octaves above the keynote scale. The technique of overblowing to get a range of higher pitched notes is not possible with the ocarina because of its vessel shape, so the range of pitches available is limited to a 12th.The tone can also be varied by changing the strength with which one blows through the instrument (pitch bending).Tabulature There are three main ways that music is written for the ocarina. There are archives of sheet music, which are either specifically written for ocarinas, or have been adapted from piano sheet music and transposed or arranged to fit within the ocarina's range.Since the ocarina is a fully chromatic instrument that can be played at the professional level in many musical backgrounds, including classical and folk, sheet music is the ideal notation to use for ocarinas. Some makers have developed their own system of numerical tablature for their ocarinas, while others follow a more universal system where numbers correspond to different notes on the scale. This method is often used by beginners who have not learnt to read sheet music.Thirdly, some beginners makes use of a pictorial tablature similar to the ocarina's finger hole pattern with blackened holes representing which holes should be covered. The tablature represents the holes on the top of the ocarina, and, where necessary, the holes on the underside. This enables easy playing, particularly for beginners. The most popular tabulature systems are 1) The John Taylor 4 hole system (Invented in 1964 by British mathematician John Taylor) and 2) The 10 hole sweet potato system (credited to inventor Giuseppe Donati of Budrio Italy).Types of ocarina There are many different styles of ocarinas varying in shape and the number of holes.Transverse (Sweet potato) This is the most well known style of ocarina. It is has a rounded shape and is held with two hands horizontally.Depending on the number of holes, one just needs to open one more hole than the previous in order to ascend in pitch.Pendant These are usually very small and very portable, Common ones usually have 4 to 6 holes using many finger combinations, but rare pendants use 8 to 10 holes.Inline These are often called a "fusion" of the Pendant and the Transverse. This allows one to ascend in pitch with the linear finger pattern rather than finger combinations Ocarinas with keys have been produced by several makers, mostly experimentally, beginning in the late 19th century.Keys and slides may be added with the intention of either expanding the instrument's range, or to enable the fingers to reach holes that are widely spaced.Multi chambered ocarinas, better known as Double and Triple ocarinas, also exist within the three broad categories of ocarina.Double and Triple ocarinas give the ocarina an extended range of up to three octaves, and enables the ocarina to play chords when more than one chamber is blown into at once.Double Transverse ocarina from Korea.Gives the ocarina extended range and enables to play chords.Made of polycarbonate plastic.Blue and white pattern transverse ocarina, early 20th Century.Front and back view of transverse ocarinas. The double holes on front indicate a fingering system developed in 20th Century Japan. The English pendant ocarina, invented in the 1960s by John Taylor, produces an entire octave using just four finger holes.Ocarinas owned by an amateur ocarina player.Ocarinas owned by a professional ocarina player.Similar instruments Other vessel flutes include the Chinese xun and African globe flutes.Chinese Densetsu Toki no Okarina? It was followed by a direct sequel, Majora's Mask.Ocarina enjoyed wide critical acclaim as well as commercial success.Gameplay 2 Plot and setting 2.When battling, the player can cause Link to focus on an enemy through a new feature called "Z Targeting" (L Targeting in the Game Cube version). When using this technique, the camera will follow the target and Link will constantly face it.Projectile attacks will be automatically directed at the target and do not require manual aiming.Link must avoid guards at times in both Hyrule Castle and the Gerudo Fortress.Link gains strength and new abilities through the collection of items and weapons found in dungeons or in the overworld.Ocarina of Time has several optional side quests, minor objectives that the player can choose to complete or ignore. In another side quest, Link can acquire a horse.Link is given an ocarina near the beginning of the game, which is later replaced by the Ocarina of Time. The Ocarina of Time is also used to claim the Master Sword in the Temple of Time.Young Link and adult Link have different abilities. For example, only adult Link can use the Fairy Bow, and only young Link can fit through certain small passages.Plot and setting Further information: Races in The Legend of Zelda series, Ocarina of Time characters, Enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.Ocarina of Time is set in Hyrule, a fictional kingdom surrounding Hyrule Castle and the setting of most Zelda games.Hyrule Field serves as a central hub connected to several outlying areas with diverse topography. Some of these areas are populated by one of the races of Hyrule: Hylians, Gorons, Zoras, Kokiri, and Gerudo.Story The game opens as the fairy Navi awakens Link from a nightmare.Navi has been sent to bring Link to the guardian of his village, the Great Deku Tree, who is cursed and near death.Link breaks the curse, but cannot stop the tree from withering. The Deku Tree tells Link that the king of the Gerudos, Ganondorf, has cursed him and seeks to conquer the land of Hyrule, and that Link must stop him.He gives Link the spiritual stone of the forest, also known as the Kokiri's emerald, and sends him to Hyrule to speak with the princess of destiny, Zelda. At Hyrule Castle, Link meets Princess Zelda, who explains that she has been having dreams about the future of Hyrule and that she foresaw Link's arrival.Link retrieves the three stones and returns to the castle, where he sees Ganondorf pursuing Zelda on horseback.Spotting Link, Zelda throws the Ocarina of Time into the castle moat. After Link retrieves the Ocarina, Zelda telepathically teaches him the "Song of Time", which, combined with the Sacred Stones, allows Link to open the door that leads to the Sacred Realm.Seven years later, an older Link awakens in an ethereal room and is met by the elderly sage Rauru.Rauru informs Link that his spirit was sealed for seven years until he was old enough to wield the Master Sword and defeat Ganondorf.Rauru is the ancient Sage of Light, one of seven sages who protect the location of the Triforce. The seven sages can imprison Ganondorf in the Sacred Realm; the other six sages are unaware of their identities, however because Ganondorf has transformed Hyrule into a land of darkness.Under Ganondorf's Reign, Hyrule has rapidly fallen into decline and numerous disasters happen.Link returns to Hyrule and is met by the mysterious Sheik, who guides Link to rid five temples of Ganon's monsters, so that the power of the temples can awaken the sages and they will help him liberate Hyrule from Ganondorf's tyrannical rule. After awakening five sages, Sheik is revealed as Princess Zelda, the seventh sage.Ganondorf kept the Triforce of Power, Zelda gained the Triforce of Wisdom and Link obtained the Triforce of Courage.Zelda bestows Link with the magical Light Arrows needed to defeat Ganondorf, when Ganondorf traps Zelda in a crystal and transports her to his tower.Zelda then takes the Ocarina of Time from Link, and uses it to send him back to his original time so he can live out his childhood naturally.Development Ocarina of Time was first shown as a technical demo at Nintendo's SpaceWorld trade show in 1995.Nintendo originally intended the game for the Nintendo 64DD peripheral, but later decided to release it on a cartridge. The development crew involved over 120 people, including stuntmen to capture swordfighting and Link's movement.Ocarina of Time Collector's Edition gold cartridge.Ocarina of Time contains development code and text that is not used in the finished product. An Arwing enemy can be found in the game code, with the attack and movement AI fully programmed. The model, sound effects and animations are taken from Star Fox 64.Also, the collector's edition had different symbols for the mirror Shield and the banners in Gerudo Fortress.Nintendo GameCube in both the Ocarina of Time: Master Quest and Collector's Edition compilation discs as an emulated ROM.In Europe and Australia the disc came in the same case as the initial pressings of The Wind Waker. In Europe it was available for a limited time through a special offer on the Nintendo website.Master Quest contains both the Ocarina of Time and a modified version with rearranged dungeons.Collector's Edition was available in GameCube bundles in Europe and North America, as well as by registering hardware and software, or by subscribing to official magazines or clubs. The disc also contains The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link, Majora's Mask, a demo of The Wind Waker and a Zelda retrospective. It was released in North America on February 26, 2007, and in Japan on February 27, 2007.The only absent element is the rumble feature (this includes the use of the Stone of Agony). The Virtual Console is Version 1.Gerudo, which was changed to a new design.Ocarina of Time was followed by four direct sequels: Majora's Mask is a story of the same Link from Ocarina of Time as he travels to a parallel land of Hyrule known as Termina. The Wind Waker is set one hundred years after Ocarina of Time, on a timeline that follows on from the devastated world of adult Link, long after Hyrule has been flooded due to the return of Ganon. The DS game Phantom Hourglass takes place shortly after The Wind Waker and features the same Link and Zelda characters.Since many details about the time line are not supplied by Nintendo (only some bits in magazine interviews), it is impossible to say exactly what order it comes in, or how many years pass in between each one.It has been said directly by creator Shigeru Miyamoto, however, that Ocarina of Time is the first in the storyline. It has been suggested that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (soundtrack) be merged into this article or section.Ocarina of Time's music was composed by Koji Kondo, a composer famous for his work on some of Nintendo's key titles.Kokiri Forest to Spanish flamenco in the Gerudo Valley. In some locations, the music is a variation of an important ocarina tune related to that area.Ocarina of Time's soundtrack has been one of the biggest influences on the soundtrack of all subsequent Zelda titles.Twilight Princess contains several of the songs learned in Ocarina of Time, present as background motifs.GameSpot considers it one of the top ten video game soundtracks as of 2001.Ocarina of Time met with both commercial and critical success.Reviewers praised the graphics, soundtrack, gameplay and story. In 1998, Ocarina of Time won the Grand Prize in the Interactive Art division at the Japan Media Arts Festival. It also won six awards at the 2nd Annual Interactive Achievement Awards including "Game of the Year", "Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Design", "Outstanding Achievement in Software Engineering", "Console Game of the Year", "Console Adventure Game of the Year", and "Console RPG of the Year".The most recent Gamespot review awarded a score of "vessel" or closed end flute and is a wind instrument. An assortment of types of ocarinas have existed since ancient times.Ocarinas can make beautiful music and rhythm. There are numerous many ocarinas, like the sweet potato, inline.Various ocarinas have differing hole sizes and numbers of holes. In recent times a video game called zelda the ocarina of time has made the ocarina popular among kids.In this video game by Nintendo (R) the character Link plays his flute for different reasons.Christian, hynns, jazz, bluegrass, hard rock, classic or acid rock, rap, country western, folk music, pop, traditional Irish, Scottish, disco, native american, Latin, Mexican, South American, African, or just any of a number of musical styles you can think of.Ocarinas are made of a variety of materials including hard wood, ceramic, pottery, plastic, other woods, glass, metal, steel, aluminum or just about any substance that can be worked into a firm shape. Some say that versions of the ocarina originated in Budrio which is a city near Bologna Italy.Though different ocarinas have varying fingerings, some ocarina artisans and craftsmen have produced ocarina tab or tablature similar to tab used in guitar.Of course conventional notation can also be used in this new age to express an opus. Some composers have made scores to be used to play harmonies.Since the start of time, from earliest to modern time, music and the arts have been an essential element of all cultures and civilizations. Some artisans make ocarinas to play in different keys. Some ocarinas are chromatic and some are pentatonic only. Some fingerings are straightforward and some are difficult.High school bands, for example, usually instruct all non C instruments as transposing instruments for ease of learning.Certainly this makes it more complicated when duos, trios, or quartets perform in concert because it requires transposition of the staff of music. The ocarina is a musical instrument. Some are high quality, some are inexpensive, some are worthy of a public recital. They can be used by the professional or amateur or beginning musician alike to play haunting meoldies for a choir or chorus or to jam with friends. Then you can set the mood with your playing. They can be played along with the guitar, piano, trumpet, accordian, banjo, harp, recorder, cello, violin, mandolin, bass, viola, clarinet, horns, bells, vocalist, tin whistle, penny whistle, bagpipes or just about any instrument you can think of...Welcome to Ocarina Workshop. Our ocarinas are widely acclaimed and highly Confidence Their squeakproof high notes allow you more confidence to play in public and more freedom to play very quietly when you need to.Some woodwinds emit annoying (and embarrassing) squeaks or squawks if you don't blow correctly on the high notes.Native American, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Blues, you name it.Sooner than that if you're already a musician! For example, after playing for a few months, a beginner will sound much better on the ocarina than they would if they had played the violin or flute for the same period of time.Note: With younger children, ideally one parent should learn
