Card's writing career began primarily as a poet, studying with Clinton F.It was while working at Ensign that Card published his first piece of fiction. His short story "Gert Fram" appeared in the July 1977 fine arts issue of that magazine under the pseudonym Byron Walley. It was eventually purchased by Ben Bova at Analog and published in the August 1977 issue.Mormon Church history, the New Testament, and other subjects for Living Scriptures in Ogden, Utah; on the basis of that continuing contract, some freelance editing work, and a novel contract for Hot Sleep and A Planet Called Treason, he left Ensign and began supporting his family as a freelancer. He completed his master's degree in English at the University of Utah in 1981 and began a doctoral program at the University of Notre Dame, but the recession of the early 1980s caused the flow of new book contracts to temporarily dry up.Magazine in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1983, and has resided there ever since. In October of that year, a new contract for the Alvin Maker "trilogy" (now up to 6 books) allowed him to return to freelancing.Ender's Game and its sequel Speaker for the Dead were both awarded the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, making Card the only author (as of 2007) to win both of science fiction's top prizes in consecutive years.Other works include the novelization of the James Cameron film The Abyss, the alternate histories The Tales of Alvin Maker and Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus, the comic book Ultimate Iron Man for Marvel Comics' Ultimate Marvel Universe series, and Robota, a collaboration with Star Wars artist Doug Chiang.Outside the published fiction world, Card contributed dialog to two video games, the The Secret of Monkey Island and The Dig in the early 1990s.Participants are picked from applicants who submit a sample of their fiction writing.Card has cited his frustration with dismal teaching methodology for creative writing in most universities as a reason for accepting this position, along with his desire to teach the techniques of effective fiction writing to writers whose values are more harmonious with his own.Card has worked closely with colleagues to develop new and effective ways to educate aspiring writers and has published two books on the subject. After being affected by his students' essays he decided to stop teaching regularly at the university to spend time with his youngest child who still lives at home.He edited the first two issues, but found that the demands of teaching, writing, and directing plays for his local church theatre group made it impossible to respond to writers' submissions in a timely manner; former Card student and experienced freelance writer and editor Edmund Schubert became the new editor as of 1 June 2006.Political writing
Card is active as a critic, political writer, and speaker. The column is published in the Greensboro Rhinoceros Times. Both columns are archived on Card's websites. At the same time, being a cynical critic of pretty much everything, the thought flashed through my mind: So Fox News is profiting from the love and loneliness and fear of our military people?"Card is also known for his strong support for the State of Israel.Maybe the Democrats will even accept the idea that sometimes the people don't want to create your utopian vision (especially when your track record is disastrous and your "utopias" keep looking like hell)...He has also been a staunch defender of Fox News, stating that "It's a good feeling to hear about our war from people who actually think it would be a good thing if we win."There is only one issue in this election that will matter five or ten years from now, and that's the War on Terror...Democrat, for whom the Republican domination of government threatens many values that I hold to be important to America's role as a light among nations.Card has also frequently criticized precipitate action on global warming, and has voiced the suggestion that scientific evidence against global warming is suppressed because global warming has become an academic orthodoxy that discourages opposing evidence..Similarly, he has voiced distrust of Darwinism as dogma in opposition to Intelligent Design (which he also distrusts, for entirely different reasons). He has written that an increase in crime in USA of the 1970s and 1980s "might well have been the result" of what he calls "the New Morality and the Pill" because they may have increased the number of babies born to "the people with poor impulse control" who are "most likely to be irresponsible parents."In his essay "The Hypocrites of Homosexuality" he advocates laws against homosexual sex, "not to put homosexuals in jail," but to encourage gay men and women to have sex only in secret "so as not to shake the confidence of the community in the polity's ability to provide rules."In the same essay, he claims to have a number of homosexuals as "dear friends" and speaks out against the use of "ugly words like faggot."Family
He and his wife Kristine are the parents of five children, each with at least one name of authors he and his wife admire.Emily Dickinson), Charles Benjamin (Charles Dickens), Zina Margaret (Margaret Mitchell) and Erin Louisa (Louisa May Alcott).Charles, afflicted with cerebral palsy, died shortly after his seventeenth birthday and their daughter, Erin, died the day she was born.Currently Card and his wife live with their youngest living child, Zina, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The life of their son Charles influenced some of Card's fiction, most notably the Homecoming series, Lost Boys and Folk of the Fringe.Their daughter, Emily, along with two other writers adapted Card's short stories "Clap Hands and Sing", "Lifeloop" and "A Sepulchre of Songs" for the stage in Posing as People. The Internet Movie Database (IMDb).Who Is Orson Scott Card?.The Official Web Site of Orson Scott Card.Uncle Orson Reviews Everything.Interview with Author Orson Scott Card..Uncle Orson Reviews Everything.Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show.War Watch: Where Do the Parties Go Now?.Civilization Watch: When Progress Stops Being Progress.WorldWatch: Creation and Evolution in the Schools.Online science fiction magazine published by Orson Scott Card."Women of Genesis" series.Orson Scott Card's work at Marvel.Ninth paragraph under the heading The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations.Fan sites

differs from this stereotype.Although he creates novels that
appeal to a wide audience using the usual science fiction appeal,
Card uses his novels to weave in his own religious and philosophical
beliefs.Card's books Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead deal
with issues of good and evil, ruthlessness and compassion, the
cycle of sin, guilt and redemption, and the damaging effect of
lies.Ender's inner struggle is dealing with guilt that his actions
have caused. The second book of the series, Speaker for the Dead begins here.Speaker
takes Ender through more of a spiritual and psychological journey
rather than a mainly physical one (Susan, SD).Speaker transcends Game, dealing with
moral dilemmas, with the heart of the book not found in the plot,
but in the ideas that surface through the character's dialogue
and thought (Susan, SD).Card deals with the symbolism of good and evil in a somewhat
polarized way within Ender's Game.Ender represents all that is
good, and his older brother, Peter, represents all that is evil.Ender is filled with remorse for any problems he causes and always
takes full responsibility for his actions and searches for a way
to correct them.Ender is good because he seeks out other's problems and attempts
to remedy them.Although Ender is not without sin, he represents the
best any person could do, given the circumstances of life.He is violent, manipulative, and power hungry.Upon realizing that he would need Valentine's assistance in his
strive for power, he pretends to befriend her.He blames certain sects for the worlds problems and gains
support using this tactic. To many people, lying or withholding information is
sometimes necessary or beneficial.Card's views that are portrayed
through his novels are exactly the opposite. It is decided not to tell Ender what he is doing,
believing his emotions would keep him from doing what he had to
do.Ender was informed that the last simulation he had played
was not a simulation at all.He had destroyed the bugger home
world.The buggers would still be
alive, and living in peace with the rest of humanity. In Speaker
for the Dead, Ender discovers a family with painful, deep secrets.Although the lies and secrets the mother created were with the
best of intentions, they damaged the family and resulted in her
marring a violent, abusive husband. Her children were all born through adultery, of the man she wanted
but could not marry because of her lies.He uncovers
the lies that the mother had told and the secrets she kept. His compassion
prevents him from becoming either a power hungry creature like
Peter, or a killing machine.Ender's compassion is
what allows him to correct the mistakes he, and others have made.Bozo and
Staleson's fatal confrontation with Ender was a last resort and
had meant to be avoided. If it had not been for Ender's compassion
there would be a second Xenocide on the colony of Lustina. He suffers because he is either
obligated, or forced into problems because he is only one who
can solve them.While humanity felt
only indirectly responsible for the destruction, Ender took the
full burden of knowing he was completely responsible for what
he had done.In the second book of the Ender series, Speaker for
the Dead, problems and suffering, still target the most distinguished
individuals.Religion is undoubtable one of Card's biggest themes. The cycle of sin, guilt,
and redemption probably sticks out the most.Card does not simply state that religion
can solve problems. He attempts to tackle a larger question: Where
should one's loyalties stand when religion and government come
into conflict?Cards belief is clear regarding this dilemma. To side with the church would be treason, a crime
punishable by death. The citizens of Lustinia decided with little
hesitation to support their church, and openly defy the government. In the battle to save humanity, Ender is accompanied by twelve
of his closest friends.The
similarities between Christ and Ender show that Card created his
character to be a symbol of God.The main influence on his work is that
he is dismayed, annoyed, or ashamed of most of the current trends
in American culture (Influence, Porschet).Current aspects of
our culture are portrayed years into the future.Video games are a basic creed of todays youth. It is well known
that these games are becoming increasingly violent. To do this, the military trains Ender through a series of video
games.The solution to all but
one of the situations is a specific violent action.By repeatedly enforcing that violence is the answer, their aim
is to pass this belief on to Ender.Although leaders mainly gain this
support with new ideas, charisma, and by endorsing favorable policies,
our history has proven that many have come into power using more
corrupt methods.These men
assumed their power through the use of political propaganda and
by creating a common enemy to the state. From the actions of two
people, a world war was started.Card, one man is able to
assume complete control of earth using these corrupt tactics.By creating a common enemy to the state, Peter acquires a unified
support base that will eventually lead him to power.Humanity must correct it's faults now.Cards theme regarding video games should not
be interpreted to narrowly.Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead are both very enjoyable
books to read. They contain many underlying themes that express
Card's views on a variety of subjects all revolving around religion
and understanding. What separates us from one another is the balance we find between
them.Card indirectly shares his philosophy on lies within the
book.If every lie that is told among the characters was compiled
into two lists, one containing the lies that motivated by greed,
hatred, and envy, the other containing the lies told with good
intentions, Card's belief would be uncovered: no matter what the
motive, any lie that is told hurts those who create it, those
it is told to, and anyone who is even indirectly connected to
it's effects.Although, Card's books clearly depict that the majority
of suffering is held by the best and brightest, it is hard to
say whether this is a belief he holds to be true. This is possible because the book revolves around Ender,
the single most gifted human in the universe, who is dealing with
problems that require the interaction with the best people from
various fields. The example regarding the culture of the piggies
is much too blatant to hold a true belief behind it.Another example that would weaken the argument
that this theme holds true to Card's beliefs is the evidence within
his books that enduring hardships creates a stronger person.Aside
from this reoccurring issue, most themes found within Card's novels
can be taken as one of his beliefs. The reader can make this assumption
because of Cards motivation to write his books.New York: TOR Books, 1985.New York: TOR Books,

Believe me, I can infuriate a room full of Republicans and seize every opportunity to do so, since I have little patience with their worship for the free market or their opposition to civilized control of weaponry. But the fact that I find George W.On politics in his fiction:
My fans can take my political views as they wish."Ender's Game":
"Ender's Game" looks, at first glance, like an obvious movie to make. What's often overlooked is that everything depends on experience through Ender's point of view, knowing what he's thinking and feeling all the time. That's a place where film simply cannot go."Ender's Shadow," into one film. The people who are slimy, tyrannical, deceitful, larcenous, etc.Life is too short to let them shape my experience of the filmmaking art.Sign in to get personalized recommendations.Hours() * 3600 + newCurrentTime.Hours() * 3600 + currentTime.Minutes() * 60 + currentTime.See all 2,450 customer reviews...Want it delivered Tuesday, January 8?Books and DVD promotion.Orson Scott Card

Intense is the word for Ender's Game.Aliens have attacked Earth twice and almost destroyed the human species.Much of the story is internal dialogue, and each narrator reads the sections told from the point of view of a particular character, rather than taking on a part as if it were a play.Card's phenomenal emotional depth comes through in the quiet, carefully paced speech of each performer. No narrator tries overmuch to create separate character voices, though each is clearly discernible, and the understated delivery will draw in listeners. In particular, Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender's inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take.Reed Business Information, a one previous book by Orson Scott Card: the novelization of James Cameron's The Abyss, which I thought was pretty good.Ender's Game, but I just didn't think it was all that great. It wasn't bad, but it just never really involved me the way that a great book does. What bothered me first off was the quality of the writing.Card doesn't even seem to follow the basic conventions of fiction writing. The lack of vivid description was one of them.Except for in the case of some of the better action sequences, I generally felt that I was reading about something that had happened to somebody else instead of feeling like I was there experiencing it myself. That's the first job of any great writer, to be able to paint with words in a nuanced way that makes the reader feel he or she is uniquely experiencing the world of the story in the first person. Also I felt the language was overly simplistic and at times unceasingly idiotic.Surely by having them use a certain amount of slang, Card is reminding us that his characters are children.Even the adults say it to one another.Hitler, or maybe a mixture of the two, depending on how you read the character) and I felt this just made me feel extremely distant from him. There's too much cold calculation in Ender, and not enough genuine human feeling. There's a lot of telling in this book.Once you get involved, you're compelled to finish it.If you're a somewhat fast reader, you probably won't need to bother with a bookmark for this one. Also, I would say overall it was a pretty fun read.If you loved Ender's Game, I have nothing bad to say about that. This one just didn't do it for me.Here's to good reading....Was this review helpful to you?Neither, I think, is this magnificent book. The plot is enthralling, the characters are complex and realistic, and the descriptions of the battleroom fill your head with fantastic images that make you wish your school had been like this, without the burden of saving humanity. The subplot involving Valentine and Peter is superb and cannot fail to inflame every reader's megalomaniacal side. Not only will you not be able to put the book down, you won't be able to read this book just once.Ender has his personal monitor removed after living with it for three years. This is the beginning of Ender's real struggle.Humanity was once almost wiped out by aliens called the buggers.Only the brilliance of a single general saved us.Now the International Force is trying to create a new general before the buggers show up again and complete their genocide. His new mentors immediately and publicly single him out as someone special, and as a result Ender has to break one bully's arm on the shuttle up to school. This book's science is plausible, the background story is interesting, the mock battles are exciting and a great device for revealing Ender's growing tactical genius. His character is strengthened through his constant struggle with his envious and sometimes sadistic classmates. This book's ending is a bit contrived, its climax impersonal and deflated, but other than that Orson Scott Card treats us to brilliant science fiction that is well deserving of its Hugo and Nebula.Ender is the true heir of Heinlein's smart, likeable, believable heroes.See all 2,450 customer reviews...In general I was turned off by this book.In the end, I think it is a child's book.It was
