0.Olbers on March 28, 1802.The orbit of Pallas is highly inclined to the plane of the main asteroid belt at 34.Name
The asteroid is named after Pallas Athena, an alternate name for the goddess Athena. In some mythologies Athena killed Pallas, then adopted her friend's name out of mourning.Pallasite meteorites are not connected to the Pallas asteroid, being instead named after the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas. The chemical element palladium, on the other hand, was named after the asteroid, which had been discovered just before the element.Shortly thereafter he announced his observations of this object, noting that the slow, uniform motion was uncharacteristic of a comet, suggesting it was a different type of object.Olbers after a preliminary orbit was computed by Friedrich Gauss. This object came to be named Ceres, and was the first asteroid to be discovered.Olbers was again attempting to locate Ceres when he noticed another moving object in the vicinity. This was the asteroid Pallas, coincidentally passing near Ceres at the time. Before this point it had been speculated by astronomers that there should be a planet in the gap between Mars and Jupiter. Now, unexpectedly, a second such body had been found. The orbit of Pallas was determined by Gauss, who found the period of 4.However, Pallas had a relatively high orbital inclination to the plane of the ecliptic. In a later paper he reported a group of three asteroids associated with Pallas, which became named the Pallas family after the largest member of the group.Since 1994 more than 10 members of this family have been identified.Pallas has been observed occulting a star several times, including the best observed of all asteroid occultation events on May 29, 1983, when careful occultation timing measurements were taken by 140 observers. These have helped determine an accurate diameter.Pallas from the tiny perturbations induced by it onto the motion of Mars. There have not been any telescopic observations of Pallas that have resolved any features on its disk.Pallas has not yet been visited by a spacecraft, but if the Dawn probe is successful in studying 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta, its mission may be extended to Pallas.Due to the high orbital inclination of Pallas, it is more difficult for a spacecraft to reach than the other large asteroids.Size comparison: the first 10 asteroids profiled against Earth's Moon.Pallas is at second left.Pallas is the third largest object in the asteroid belt, similar to 4 Vesta in volume (to within uncertainty), but somewhat less massive.By comparison, the mass of Pallas is only about 0.Both Vesta and Pallas have assumed the title of second largest asteroid from time to time.Pallas is farther from the Earth with a much lower albedo than Vesta, and consequently appears dimmer.Indeed, the much smaller 7 Iris marginally exceeds Pallas in mean opposition magnitude.Pallas' mean opposition magnitude is +8.Ceres and Vesta, it will require more powerful optical aid to view at small elongations, when its magnitude can drop as low as +10.But during rare perihelic oppositions, Pallas can reach a magnitude of +6.During late February 2014, Pallas will shine at magnitude 6.Pallas was among the "candidate planets" in an early draft of the IAU's 2006 definition of planet, but does not qualify in the final definition because it has not "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit. There is some consideration that the largest asteroids, such as Pallas, are actually protoplanets. Many of the objects the size of Ceres and Pallas were accreted by the largest bodies, which became the planets.Pallas has unusual dynamical parameters for such a large body. This means that, every Palladian summer and winter, large parts of the surface are in constant sunlight or constant darkness for a time of the order of an Earth year.Consensus has not been reached as to whether Pallas' rotation is prograde or retrograde.Based on spectroscopic observations, the primary component of the Pallas surface material is a silicate that is low in iron and water. There are indications that the surface composition of Pallas is very similar to the Renazzo carbonaceous chondrite (CR) meteorites, which is even lower in hydrous minerals than the CM type.Exploration
An orbit of Pallas cannot be achieved by the Dawn Mission due to the fuel requirements of reaching the asteroid's highly inclined orbit. However, a flyby mission may be theoretically possible whenever Pallas is crossing an orbital node, as this briefly places the asteroid in the plane of the ecliptic."Triaxial ellipsoid dimensions and rotational pole of 2 Pallas from two stellar occultations"."The size and shape of (2) Pallas from the 1983 occultation of 1 Vulpeculae"."Estimations of masses of the largest asteroids and the main asteroid belt from ranging to planets, Mars orbiters and landers"."New determination of the mass of Pallas".NASA Planetary Data System.Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, 2nd edition, Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin, p.NASA Planetary Data System.Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.Los Alamos National Laboratory."Kiyotsugu Hirayama and His Families of Asteroids (invited)".Proceedings of the International Conference, Sagamihara, Japan: Astronomical Society of the Pacific.Description of the System of Asteroids."Ceres, Vesta, and Pallas: Protoplanets, Not Asteroids".Transactions of the American Geophysical Union 87 (10): 105."Radar Observations of Asteroids 1 Ceres, 2 Pallas, and 4 Vesta"."Shapes and rotational properties of thirty asteroids from photometric data"."The 3 Micron Spectrum of Asteroid 2 Pallas.".Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society 14: 719."Earliest Meteoritse Provide New Piece in Planetary Formation Puzzle."Hubble Images of Asteroids Help Astronomers Prepare for Spacecraft Visit.External links

Avg: 3.According to a British friend of mine who was present for the early 80's prog renaissance at the Marque in London, Pallas was
the band everyone felt would be the biggest success.Marillion was considered second to them, but also a contender for
success (in fact, in my friends clique.....Marque crowd was comprised of a number of cliques..........Eddy Offord production, gatefold album sleeve with a great fantasy art work. And worse, their tour de force, the Atlantis suite, had been butchered by the record company. The bands momentum was lost,
seemingly forever.Pallas in the late 90's, and only first listened to their music around 2004 or so, in preparation for their
Nearfest 2005 performance. What I heard was a fairly bland neo prog, though with a bit more of a bite than typical neo
bands. For myself, the first 3 tracks are somewhat throwaway, poppier type numbers. Not terrible, but short and very much like
early 80's MTV fodder, if a bit more interesting that most of what was popular on that channel back then. This is 80's prog at it's finest I think, neo done with
suitable amounts of rock, new wave, and symphonic grandeur. In other works, it's okay. When I pull this out to listen to it,
it is quite enjoyable, at least the the last 7 tracks anyway. But I don't pull it out very often. If you want a complete picture of the second wave of prog, and the gestation of neo prog, this album is really essential. The album shows that Pallas were
probably a perfect band for their time, but outside of it they don't hold up so well (though their more recent albums are
pretty decent neo prog of the modern variety).Pallas arrived as one of the bands amongst the early eighties British Neo Prog movement.Yes Producer Eddie Offord and the sound overall is pretty good. The cd version has added a few tracks and the running order has been changed too.Eyes in the Night (Arrive Alive) and Cut and Run and both display the more commercial side of the band.Ark of Infinity and Atlantis are both over seven minutes.Ark of Infinity closes the cd version and not such a good way to end in my opinion.Pallas, if not up to the quality of their predecessors and in the eighties helped give us hope that Progressive Rock still had a life.Pallas was one of the rare bands active in the (early) eighties.Pendragon, Marillion and IQ.Marillion in the Fish days and Pendragon (The Jewel). So I wondered what Pallas was like.Pallas label, but what a disappointment.Studio Album, 1998)
Avg: 3.Pallas made in this album is tremendous and worthy of congratulations, but at times, the band
seems indistinct from other modern Neo bands, especially Arena and Pendragon. In fact, the only time Beat the Drum really falters is on indistinct songs slightly past the half point.Bruce Dickenson, but because his voice is utterly
commanding. This applies to all Pallas albums after Beat the Drum as well, in case you
decide to start with Pallas at a later album.Every aspect of this record would be improved upon with the two
subsequent records.Nevertheless, I cannot turn away from Beat the Drum.Pallas songs, and I
would not want to go back to a time when I did not know them. So, please give this album a try if you are interested in Neo
Prog in the least (and try not to be put off by the term). If you know and like any other Pallas material, you must try this
album. You owe it to yourself to know
Pallas for more than their 80s material.Prog Archives, All rights reserved.Pallas
