individuals who designed, built, and served aboard the submarines bearing the name "Parche."USS Parche (SSN 683) during the Cold War and beyond which earned her the distinction of being the most highly decorated vessel in U.They toiled in quiet anonymity and continue even today to honor the
Submariner tradition of being "The Silent Service."This spot acts as a
false eye. This may serve to intimidate the other animal or
may remind the predator that the butterfly is much too spiny to make a tasty
meal.Butterfly fishes usually frequent shallow inshore waters, where they feed
on a variety of crustaceans and on coral polyps.July, Miss Betty Russell smashed the traditional bottle of champagne
across the bow as she slid into the water for the first time.Russell is the daughter of the U.District Judge Robert Lee Russell,
formerly Judge Advocate General of the Navy.Parche was later
commissioned on November 20th, 1943 with Commander Lawson P.World War II Pacific Submarine Force, she made six war patrols, earning five
battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citation awards.Japanese convoy on July 31, 1944.Parche worked her way in inside two escorts and began an
approach on a medium AK at 0354.The target slid by about 200 yards away
and then turned to avoid two torpedoes Parche had fired at her. That move effectively blocked an escort who had sneaked in behind her
and also opened up an opportunity for shots at two tankers and the AK.One missed ahead of the ship but the other two fish hit the
forward section slowing down the tanker but not stopping her completely. The escorts opened up with deck guns, machineguns and
flares firing in all directions. The convoy started to mill about
smartly with Parche in the middle.Parche came back
after the first tanker to finish her off.Parche crossed her
track astern at only 200 yards.Parche fired three torpedoes from the stern tubes at
the tanker. All hit the tanker with terrific explosions effectively
silencing the gunfire from that quarter. The two escorts on the port quarter were now
concentrating their machine gun fire on Parche.Parche barely missed being rammed by
less than 50 feet. The first fish started off to
the right, so Ramage checked fire, spotted on, and fired two more.Stopping to take account of the situation, Ramage
counted eight ships still visible on her RADAR screen. The big transport was stopped and down by the bow,
but showed no further signs of going down. The entire attack took
46 minutes.Japanese ships ,and had disrupted yet another convoy.Presidential Unit Citation and Commander Ramage was awarded
the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Submarine Combat Insignia was
also authorized for the patrol.Parche survived both the airburst and the
underwater burst, coming through relatively undamaged.Parche's proud name was stricken from the Navy list on November
8th, 1969 and sold on June 18th, 1970 for scrap.USS PARCHE (SSN 683) continued the famous heritage of its namesake. The keel
of the second PARCHE was laid December 10th, 1970 at Ingalls Shipbuilding Division
of Litton Industries, Pascagoula, Mississippi.Parche was commissioned with Commander R.Mediterranean sea which included visits to
Naples, Taranto, La Spezia, and La Maddalena, Italy.Commander Maurer is the son of John H.The next month Parche sailed out of the Cooper river from
Charleston into the Atlantic ocean for the last time.Parche steamed into the Isthmus of Panama, through the Panama
Canal.Culebra Cut, and
over the great Continental Divide to the mighty Pacific Ocean. Here she began her new career with
Submarine Development Group One.Operations, was the operational focal point for all Navy deep
submergence matters. After topping off at Midway, the three reached the sea lanes south of
Formosa 16 April.On 29 April Bang reported
a large convoy 50 miles away, and the wolf pack attacked, Parche getting one hit.May and Parche headed north at full speed to
intercept. An hour after midnight Parche was
in position and scored three torpedo hits on the leading ship and two hits on
the second freighter, sinking both.Parche
scored two hits on the third freighter, which settled by the stern and
began to list to port.Parche getting
credit for Taiyoku Maru and Shoryu Maru.Parche returned to Midway
23 May 1944, after making a thorough photo reconnaissance of military
installations on the island of Ishi Gaki Jima.Parche went to sea 17 June, following her refit. On 4 July a Japanese cruiser and
destroyer bombarded and depth charged Parche.During this daring
night surface action Parche barely
avoided being rammed by one ship.Steelhead sank
two other ships, a transport and a cargo vessel.Another tanker and a cargo
ship were damaged. For this action Parche
received the Presidential Unit Citation. On 1 August the sub departed for
Saipan where she moored 5 August, arriving Pearl Harbor 16 August. On her third war patrol, 10 September to
2 December, one of the longest of the war, Parche
did not encounter any targets. When Parche left Pearl Harbor 19 March 1945,
she headed directly for the east coast of Honshu, Japan. On 11 April Parche made a gun attack, sinking a small freighter of about 800
tons. She torpedoed another small vessel the next day.On 13 April Parche sank a fishing trawler. Two hours
later she again opened fire on a small observation boat, leaving it blazing
stem to stern. On 22 April Parche sighted three small tankers in column, proceeding north
along the coast south of Okama Saki.Parche
fired three torpedoes at the second tanker and then shifted to the third,
which was left down by the stern covered with a cloud of smoke. The gunboat was soon joined
by a sub chaser and then by a freighter.Picking the freighter as the best
target, Parche fired four torpedoes
from her forward tubes for one hit, which threw up a veil of dense white smoke. She sank several trawlers by
gunfire on 23 June. Two days later she sighted three large ships and six
escorts headed north along the coast, one of the most tempting convoys seen for
some months in Japanese home waters. After another round of life guard duty
for the carrier planes of Task Force 38, on 17 July, Parche rendezvoused with Cero
to take aboard three fliers, and set course for Midway, arriving 23 July,
and mooring Pearl Harbor 28 July.Arriving in
Bikini lagoon 1 June, Parche survived
both the air burst and the underwater burst, coming through relatively undamaged. She was then assigned to
Naval Reserve training duty in Oakland, Calif. She is
credited with sinking 31,696 tons of enemy shipping. She let out a piercing scream and was rushed to a hospital as security officers tackled Parche and took him into custody. She had previously received death threats in connection with the conflict in Yugoslavia. But Hamburg police were quick to rule this out and described Parche as appearing confused and probably mentally disturbed.Further media reports in the days following the attack described Parche as a loner, who was prompted to attack Seles because of an obsession with seeing the German player Steffi Graf regain the World No.Parche was charged with the attempted murder of Seles, but insisted that he did not intend to kill her, only injure her.During his trial, psychology experts testified that Parche was mentally deficient. In the end he was acquitted of attempted murder and found guilty of the lesser charge of causing grievous bodily harm. The sentence was condemned by Seles and her family who felt that it was much too lenient, but it was nevertheless upheld on appeal. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.See Copyrights for details.Parche may refer to:
