Anka recorded his first single 'I Confess' at age 14.Diana' is one of the best selling 45s in music history.In the 1960s Anka would begin acting in motion pictures as well as writing songs for them, most notably the theme for the hit movie The Longest Day.From his movie work, he wrote and recorded one of his greatest hit, 'Lonely Boy'.He then went on to become one of the first pop singers to perform at the Las Vegas casinos.Anka returns to Canada several times a year, regularly playing to sold out crowds at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario.They would record two more duets that both made it into the Top 10.The jingle became so popular, he recorded it as a full song, and it became a hit a year later.On September 6, 1990, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.Anka awarded a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto.In December 2007, Paul Anka was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame.In October of 1995, he appeared in Treehouse of Horror VI on from the 80s and 90s.My favorite track is his cover of the Eric Clapton's song Tears in Heaven.Another highlight track on this CD is BlackHole Sun.The bass guitar playing on the track Hello is so Anka began composing songs which were based on his personal experiences.In 1956 he went to Los Angeles where he stayed with an uncle that worked
at the local civic playhouse.It was at this time that Anka's uncle became interested in Paul's music and arranged
for the industry contacts he needed.Freeman was impressed
with Anka and invited him to his home to rehearse.Disappointed Anka returned to Canada, made plans to attend college and considered a
career in law or news reporting.During Easter vacation, Anka went to New York with the Rover Boys, a Canadian quartet.Anka
then released singles every few months.However, they didn't do nearly as well as his past
records.Anka was now in demand around the world and appeared at the London Palladium and other
English venues in November, 1957.In 1959, he debuted at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas.The result was his popularity
began fading with teenagers.Still he had some good sized hits, but they had trouble
generating top record sales.Anka switched record labels and
signed with RCA Victor.His first few records sold well, but he also had some failures.During the five years after 1963, Anka failed to place a single on the charts.In 1971, he
signed with a new label Buddah Records, whom he thought was more in tune with his record
buying audience.Anka released a few singles for Buddah, but his songwriting was clearly
out of style.In 1974, Anka signed with United Artist, a company known for it's middle of the road
music.Anka was credited with writing twelve songs that became gold records, most of which he
recorded.Today Paul Anka is a multimillionaire, due to his night club successes, record and
publishing royalties, and investments that include two publishing houses.He owns a
personal jet, large ranch near Monterey and a home in Las Vegas.Paul Anka became a United States citizen in August, 1990. |
