Paul Motian was born in Philadelphia in 1931 and from the age of two, he grew up in Providence, Rhode Island.Soon the Korean War forced him to join the Navy which he left at the age of 24."There used to be a lot of sessions in New York", Paul told Downbeat "there were chances to play. One night Arthur Taylor didn't show up, and Bob Reisner, who was running the sessions said, 'Go, get your drums, you can play with Thelonious'.Around this time Motian met Bill Evans. They played together in Tony Scott's group. He also recorded with George Russell and had opportunities to play with masters as Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. It has proven to be one of the most pervasively influential groups in Modern Jazz history.Arlo Guthrie (at Woodstock).Motian mastered the nuances of color, texture and melody that take the function of the drums well beyond that of time and propulsion of the group into the more challenging realms of composition and utilizing space. In the late sixties, Motian began playing with Keith Jarrett aside of Charlie Haden.Throughtout the 70's and 80's, Motian's status as group leader, composer and recording artist grew and matured.Conception Vessel and Tribute (both on ECM) featured such friends and musical associates as Jarrett, Haden, Leroy Jankins, Sam Brown and Carlos Ward.Pat Metheny reccomended Bill Frisell.Ed Schuller (bass), Joe Lovano and Billy Drewes (saxophones) rounded the newly formed quintet up.With the expanded format Motian's music became more colorful and complex. The trio's first recording It Should Have Been a Long Time Ago (ECM) was followed by Motian's debut on jMT: Monk in Motian.Bebop standards and "Bill Evans" reflects his first trio experience with the Bill Evans trio.Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz as well as by young newcomers like Joshua Redman of the Electric Bebop Band. The Paul Motian trio in its pure form appears on two productions: on the 1991 live album In Tokyo and on jMT's recent release Trioism.Although he studied drums in the Navy School of Music in Washington, there has never been anything militaristic about Paul Motian's prolific work as a jazz drummer.Stan Getz, George Russell and Thelonious Monk, but his major association was with pianist Bill Evans, both in Evans's trio and as a member of other groups, such as the quartet led by clarinettist Tony Scott.Motian developed a particular rapport with bassist Charlie Haden, in whose own groups he toured and recorded from time to time, from the 1960s to the 1990s.From the late 1970s, Motian has mainly fronted his own groups, ranging from the excitement of his Electric Bebop Band (which pitted two guitarists against a saxophone player, backed by bass and drums) to more conventional jazz trios and quartets.Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell is particularly noteworthy.DO YOU LIKE DRUMMERWORLD?US Music Experts and Writers: Want to write for AMG?Garde JazzMusical trio (with bassist Scott LaFaro), appearing on his classics Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby...Paul Motian says describing his unique musical style. As a child Motian was surrounded by the sound of Middle Eastern music in the home of his Armenian parents and he often credits the Arabic and Turkish melodies and rhythms of his youth with having a lasting influence on his own idiosyncratic approach to drumming.Born March 25th, 1931, in Philadelphia, he grew up in Rhode Island during the swing era and after a brief flirtation with the guitar he settled down at the drums and became involved in the big band music of the day before falling under the modernist spell of the early beboppers. They influenced me a lot.George Russell, Tony Scott and Lennie Tristano.Half Note for 10 weeks and we had a different bass player every week.It was quite an experience. It was while with Scott and Russell that Motian got his first experience playing with pianist Bill Evans.European producer, Manfred Eicher, offered Motian the opportunity to present his own compositions on a record date for ECM.It Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago, featuring two then practically unheard of sidemen: guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano.Frisell trio has remained together for 21 years, recording a remarkable series of albums (including tributes to Evans, Monk and Tin Pan Alley) for a variety of different labels. This year the band returned to ECM with I Have The Room Above Her.The way it works with Lovano and Frisell, I would get together with them after I had something down and we would rehearse it and play it and it would come together like that.It kind of comes together bit by bit.And we did it on ECM; the first Electric BeBop Band record that we did on ECM.Bill McHenry at the Vanguard and next month will see the release of trio recordings by Frank Kimbrough, Bobo Stenson and Enrico Rava, each of which include his compositions in addition to his drumming.Conversations Larry Ridley: Them's That Teach Can Do Subway Songs New York Accent Don't Wait Too Long...Minutes() * 60 + currentTime.Ships from and sold by Amazon.See all 9 customer collaboration, the band taking a fresh look at the canon with inspired versions of Monk, Mingus and Charlie Parker tunes (the tenor dialogues can suggest a Mingus band).Send Band ringtones to your it's moving."It's a quote from Ben Ratliff circa 2003, describing Paul Motian's Electric Be Bop Band.He plays with an incredibly open feel.Motian's band: which has nothing to do with solos or chord changes, and a lot to do with hanging music onto a frame.Motian stacks three electric guitars on top of each other, and his music works. It's partly because his music is unique. He distinguishes between timbre and texture; and he leaves plenty of space, as both a composer and a drummer, for everyone to find their places.Motian wanted to make timeless music; and I think that, throughout his career, he's done exactly that."Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.Everything you go to Paul Motian for is here: his sober thoughtfulness, his pessimism, his lyricism and insistence on beauty in the midst of grief. As usual, there is the emphasis on song, sometimes keening, sometimes crooning, sometimes kidding, and, as usual, the shadow of Ornette Coleman smiling in the background.Motian, but I can safely say this is the first collection of his where I am not finding myself skipping over any tracks. This is music of the highest order. Was this review helpful to you?The Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Portrait of Jazz. Most recently, Motian has been playing with three of his own groups: his trio with guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano; Trio 2000 + 1, Frisell and Joe Lovano. It's the only one of their JMT recordings to focus entirely on Motian's original compositions and their final visit to the recording studio for over a decade."Jack of Clubs", with its darkly humorous melody, features Lovano and Frisell in short unaccompanied solos."Monica's Garden" has Motian laying down some nice, laid back swing and "In Remembrance of Things Past" substitutes the great Dewey Redman for Lovano.Overall this is a more uptempo, energetic album than the trio's most recent release, the beautiful I Have the Room Above Her.Was this review helpful to you?"Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.Your vote will be counted and will appear on the product page within 24 hours."Frisell CD I've purchased and heard.Motion's Electric Band discs, "Reincarnation Of A Love Bird" and "Garden Of Eden".The songs penned by Motian are spare and impressionistic, but the main difference is that the instrumentation is more individual on "Trioism"."Trioism" opens with "It Should Have Happened", which effectively summarizes the rest of the CD.The melody is eldritch and stated in parts by Lovano and Frisell. After that, the rest of disc isn't quite as good. They're certainly not taking the easy road with this CD, so that may be why.The exception is "In Remembrance Of Things".Dewey Redman comes in and shakes things up to good effect. Was this review helpful to you?See all 2 customer reviews...What About Jazz Since 67?Be the first person to add an article about this item at Amapedia.Music You Should Hear: Artists' PicksWant
