1.Pentacles as magical objects
Pentacles, despite the sound of the word, often had no connotation of "five" in the old magical texts, but were, rather, magical talismans inscribed with any symbol or character.Agrippa attributes Moses' feats of magic in part to his knowledge of various pentacles.Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy (c.Agrippa gives detailed instructions as to how pentacles should be formulated:
But we now come to speak of the holy and sacred Pentacles and Sigils. Now these pentacles, are as it were certain holy signes preserving us from evil chances and events, and helping and assisting us to binde, exterminate, and drive away evil spirits, and alluring the good spirits, and reconciling them unto us.And these pentacles do consist either of Characters of the good spirits of the superiour order, or of sacred pictures of holy letters or revelations, with apt and fit versicles, which are composed either of Geometrical figures and holy names of God, according to the course and maner of many of them; or they are compounded of all of them, or very many of them mixt.In the Golden Dawn magical system, the Earth Pentacle is one of four elemental "weapons" or tools of an Adept.Other pentacles for the evocation of spirits are also employed in the Golden Dawn system; these are engraved with the name and sigil of the spirit to be invoked, inside three concentric circles, having painted on their reverse a circle and cross like a celtic cross.Fire is not matter at all; water is a combination of elements; air almost entirely a mixture of elements; earth contains all both in admixture and in combination.Method of employment
In many old grimoires dealing with magical evocation, the pentacle is described as being hung about the neck, providing protection and authority to the operator.Trithemius has the magician donning the pentacle just before casting the protective circle:
Then taking your ring and pentacle, put the ring on the little finger of your right hand; hang the pentacle round thy neck; (Note, the pentacle may be either wrote on clean virgin parchment, or engraven on a square plate of silver and suspended from thy neck to the breast)...One version of the Key of Solomon mentions both a "Great Pentacle" which is drawn in a book, as well as a collection of other pentacles which are drawn in ink on separate pieces of parchment for use as amulets:
Thou shalt preserve them to suspend from thy neck, whichever thou wilt, on the day and hour wherein thou wast born, after which thou shalt take heed to name every day ten times, the Name which is hung from thy neck, turning towards the East, and thou mayest be assured that no enchantment or any other danger shall have power to harm thee. The pentacle is of central importance in the evocation of spirits. Here be the symbols of secret things, the standards, the ensigns, and the banners, of God the conqueror; and the arms of the almighty One, to compel the aerial potencies.Come ye promptly, and delay not to appear, and answer us with humility. If they appear at this time, show them the pentacles, and receive them with kindness, gentleness, and courtesy; reason and speak with them, question them, and ask from them all things which thou hast proposed to demand. But if, on the contrary, they do not yet make their appearance, holding the consecrated knife in the right hand, and the pentacles being uncovered by the removal of their consecrated covering, strike and beat the air with the knife as if wishing to commence a combat, comfort and exhort thy companions, and then in a loud and stern voice repeat the following conjuration: ...Once the spirit has appeared and been constrained, the pentacle is covered again, but is uncovered whenever demands are made of the spirit or when it is compelled to depart. In the Golden Dawn system, the pentacles are not suspended from the neck, but wrapped in a cloth covering; instead of a "pentacle", the magician wears fastened to their breast a "Lamen", which serves among other things as a magical shield. The Second Pentacle of Jupiter, from the Key of Solomon (Clavicula Salomonis). He was rumored to be an alchemist. The pentacle of the Art, as given in Pietro d'Abano's Heptameron.Mercury, the Moon increasing. The "First Pentacle of the Moon" from the Key of Solomon. It serves "to call forth and invoke the spirits of the moon, and further serveth to open doors, in whatever way they may be fastened."The Earth Pentacle in the Golden Dawn system of magic, one of the elemental "weapons" or tools of an Adept. The Pentacle of the Art as given in a 19th century publication of The Sixth Book of Moses, incorporating characters of the Alphabet of the Magi.Pentacles in the Tarot
In the Tarot, the minor arcana are divided into four suits (much like conventional playing cards): swords, staves, cups and coins.Following the innovation of Eliphas Levi, many writers on Tarot divination now call the coins "pentacles", and many decks depict them as discs marked with a pentagram. In this context they represent the element earth or divinity manifesting in matter.Third Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary gives only the derivation penta + culum, and defines it as a pentagram, especially enclosed in a circle; a talisman inscribed with such a shape; or any similar magic symbol; pentacle and the Middle French pentacol are considered separate and unrelated words.Pentacle approved as religious symbol on soldiers' tombstones
After a ten year legal battle, the circled pentagram (referred to as a pentacle by applicants and the court case) was added to the list of 38 approved religious symbols to be placed on the tombstones of fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery on 24 April 2007.Retrieved on 29 August 2006.Retrieved on 29 August 2006.MacGregor Mathers' introduction to The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage.Paul, Minnesota: Llewellyn Publications, p.Farrar, Janet and Farrar, Stewart. The Witches' Way (1984) (published as Part 2 of A Witches' Bible, 1996) Custer, Washington, USA: Phoenix Publishing Inc, p.Rabbi Abognazar (translator from Hebrew to Latin), The Veritable Clavicles of Solomon.Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edn.Burial and Memorials: Available Emblems of Belief for Placement on Government Headstones and Markers. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.Over the past decades Pentacle has earned tremendous

The terms pentagram and pentacle are sometimes used interchangeably. The same ending is found in such words as telegram. An upright pentacle is generally defined as an upright pentagram surrounded by a circle, as is shown in the
following icon.Pentagram
Upright pentacles and pentagrams are among the most widely used religious symbols. As Carmenta she was said to have invented the Roman
alphabet. The port of Caraalis, (now Cagliari,
the capital of Sardinia), was named after her. Many Wiccans,
other Neopagans and Roma
(Gypsies) continue to cut apples in this way.The Roma refer to the core as the Star of
Knowledge.BCE)
established a school which pursued knowledge in mathematics, music, religion,
and other specialties.Driven underground, his followers used the pentagram as a
secret sign to identify themselves to each other. The Masonic Order has
traditionally traced its origins back 2,500 years to the Pythagoreans. This date is still celebrated as Jesus'
birthday in Armenian churches, and is observed with more pomp than is Christmas
by the Greek Orthodox church. It was inscribed on King Solomon's
ring, which is often called Solomon's Seal in error. The Celts believed that the pentacle was the sign of the Goddess of the Underground, who they called
Morgan (a.Ireland had five great
roads, five provinces and five paths of the law.The five points of the pentagram have been interpreted as representing the five
wounds of Christ (2 wrist, 2 ankle and 1 side). These were changed
in the 19th century to pentacles when the Tarot became associated
with the Kabbalah. They eventually became the suit of
diamonds in modern playing cards. The pentacle and pentagram are their main
symbols. Many religious and spiritual groups use the pentacle or pentagram today.Pentagram
Some religious and spiritual groups have used the inverted pentacle.During the 20th century, Satanists inverted the upright pentacle and adopted
it as their own symbol. However, the symbol is most commonly shown with the head
of a goat within the pentagram as shown below.Sigl of Baphomet
The inverted pentacle with a goat's head is called the Sigl of Baphomet. It has also been
called the Black Goat, Devil's Goat, Goat Head, Goat of Mendes, and Judas Goat.It can probably be safely
assumed that their description of the Baphomet is more a product of the Inquisition's torture methods
than of any actual statue that was in use by the Knights. They installed the English occultist Aleister Crowley to head their
British section.Pentagrams to their users
There is no single consensus on the significance of these symbols.Wiccans have attempted to reconstruct a Pagan religion similar to
that of the ancient Celts.Morgan, an
ancient Celtic goddess. It is used to cast and banish their healing circles.Others relate the points to the four directions and
spirit.Their hand passes from their
forehead to one hip, up to the opposite shoulder, across to the other
shoulder, down to the opposite hip and back to the forehead. Some of the
more highly structured Wiccan traditions have used an inverted pentagram to
represent a second or third degree status. Many of these groups
have since substituted a triangle form for the same degrees because of the
association of the inverted form of the pentacle with Satanism and black
magic.Ceremonial magicians also use the pentagram. The Order of the Eastern Star is a international humanitarian
organization composed of women who are wives of advanced Masons. They use an
inverted pentacle as their symbol.Essentially all Eastern Star members in
North America are Christians. They frequently use a wand, sword, cup and pentagram as tools during their
rituals.Five Points of Fellowship.Masonry is vestigial and peripheral. Some heavy metal rock bands occasionally use a pentacle or
pentagram as a band symbol. It is often neither an upright nor an inverted
symbol. Most of these groups simply use the symbolism and
stage theatrics to generate notoriety, popularity and record sales. They number perhaps 20,000 in North America. Some Satanic
grottos and temples use the Baphomet symbol. This
disagreemnt carries over into their understanding of
pentacles and pentagrams.Liberal Christians generally view Satan as a principle of
evil rather than as a living entity.Wiccans are prohibited by their Wiccan Rede from harming, manipulating
or controlling others.Satanists, on the other hand, are free to use magic to harm their
enemies. Many religious liberals view the Wiccan upright pentacle or pentagram as
an elegant, spiritual symbol that represents life.Fundamentalist and other Evangelical Christians generally have an
entirely different view of Wicca, Satanism and other religions.Books by conservative Christian authors about Wicca and Satanism are
based primarily on books by other Christian authors, rather than on
primary religious sources. Some of the ideas put forth in these books as truth can
be traced back to 15th century Christian propaganda during the Burning
Times.The son of Katherine King,
owner of a local Pagan book store in Roswell, discovered the ban during a school
assignment. He asked why such a prohibition was in place, because it was such an
obvious violation of the 1st Amendment of the U.Roswell Daily Record News published an interview with Steve
Smothermon, pastor of the Church on the Move.He indicated that their goal was
not to deny any students the right to wear their religious symbol. His mention of violence and bloodshed
apparently refers to the Satanic Ritual Abuse hoax.During
the 1990's and early 1990's, many North Americans believed that Satanists
ritually abused and killed tens of thousands of children annually. However, many conservative Christians are
still convinced that it happens; Senator Adair is apparently one.Smothermon doubts that the wearing of a pentagram is protected by law. What
ruling allows for violence to be promoted in our school system? The police had an
obvious presence.Prayer meetings inside and outside the meeting area were held
throughout the evening.He
said that he found the Christian cross offensive because, to him, it stood for
the destruction of his culture. Many Wiccans and other Neopagans spoke, asking
for tolerance, understanding and human rights. No student on school property
or at any school activity shall wear, possess, use, distribute, display or sell
any clothing, jewelry, emblem, badge, symbol, sign or other item that currently
evidences or reflects membership in, or affiliation with, any gang. The board decided to allow the wearing of Neopagan religious symbols. The Church
on the Move threatened legal action to reinstate the ban.Thames and Hudson (1992), Page 128.The Witches'
