Peter Hammill portrayed on the cover of his 1982 album Enter K.Type, Virgin, Naive, Foundry, Enigma, Fie!Van der Graaf Generator. Most noted for his vocal abilities, his main instruments are guitar and piano. He has been married to his wife Hilary since 1978 and they have 3 children. He attended Beaumont College, Old Windsor, and Manchester University, where he studied Liberal Studies in Science. In general, however, solo Hammill is concerned with more personal matters, while the band's songs deal with broader themes. His earlier work was largely existential in nature and many of his solo album lyrics are literary, poetic and amongst the most sensitive and intelligent and complex expressions of angst and a search for meaning in the history of music. It appears to be very difficult to categorize his music. In a 1977 radio interview, John Lydon of the Sex Pistols played two tracks from the album and expressed his admiration for Hammill in glowing terms: "Peter Hammill's great. If you listen to his solo albums, I'm damn sure Bowie copied a lot out of that geezer. The credit he deserves, has just not been given to him.Hammill's solo career resumed in earnest after the final demise of Van der Graaf Generator in 1978, and has continued to the present day. Many different styles of music appear in his work, among them avant garde electronic experiments (Loops and Reels; Unsung; Spur of the Moment), opera (The Fall of the House of Usher); solo keyboard accompaniment (And Close As This); solo guitar accompaniment (Clutch); and band recordings (Enter K).Despite the complexity of his work, Hammill's output is prolific, typically with new albums once or twice a year. His catalogue varies between artful complexity in the late 1960s and early 1970s; raw, energetic new wave in the late 1970s and early 1980s; mature, expansive songform in the late 1980s and early 1990s; and slow, melancholic balladry in the late 1990s and 2000s.There are numerous exceptions to all of these phases, illustrating the difficulty of categorising Hammill's work.Hammill's early records, like the VdGG albums, were released on Charisma Records.Type, a label run by Hammill and his manager Gail Colson. In 1992 he formed his own label, Fie!Hammill survived a heart attack in December 2003.He was awarded the prestigious Italian Tenco Prize for songwriting at the end of 2004.In 2005, Hammill reformed Van der Graaf Generator.Nov 2006 played a series of well received concerts. The last of the Charisma remasters was released in September 2007.Solo concerts will continue simultaneously.Lyrics Hammill's lyrics are another distinctive feature of his work.Judging by the spelling of the names, Hammill's source seems to have been Magnus Magnusson's 1965 translation.Mike Barnes, Life Sentences.Peter Montreal, Canada April 1974.Peter Hammill was born on Bonfire Night, 1948, in Ealing, and educated at Beaumont College, Manchester University (Liberal Studies in Science) with further education in Van der Graaf Generator.Chris Judge Smith left (though he still writes songs with Peter) and Hugh Banton, Guy Evans, Keith Ellis and Peter Hammill remained together until the end of 1968 when the band broke up entirely.Van der Graaf Generator Mark II.The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other' and 'H To He Who Am The Only One', both of which received amazing reviews. The band at this point featured Peter Hammill, David Jackson, Hugh Banton and Nic Potter, although Nic left midway through the 'H To He' sessions.Inevitably the band broke up "for reasons described as spiritual though never fully explained to, or understood by, anyone outside the band".Late last year Peter Hammill started work on a further solo album at Rockfield studios which he has called 'Nadir's Big Chance' and suggests that it is closer to 'Fool's Mate' than the last three solo albums, with lighter, shorter songs.....The album is released by Charisma on February 7th, and, up to a point, manifests the completion of a full circle as Peter meets his alter ego, Rikki Nadir.Peter Hammill's vision of the future is typical of his attitude in general: "Hopefully I will go on doing what has to be done (which is known only in the moment of action) for as long and as honestly as possible......"Copyright issuesContact Information (and 2007!UK version of the Aerosol Grey Machine has surfaced, this time with a white label able to see the band live in 1972 was tempered by the fact that Peter Hammill was by then a solo artist and performing around Europe, albeit sporadically.Read articles from the Manchester Independent and other publications from 1968 and 1969, and Hugh Banton's advert in the International Times of August 23rd 1968.Also Caleb Bradley and The Lost Demo Tape! The album entitled The Aerosol Grey Machine wasn't originally released in the UK.It was the band's first album, recorded in 1969, but it only became obtainable in Britain in 1973 as an import, through Virgin (I think).Either way it was the final brick in the wall and a great album as well. This album, among others, was produced by John Anthony. The CD, released in 1997, contains some interesting sleeve notes, penned by Peter Hammill, about the early history of the band; "you should get some flavour of the times".In the early part of 1971 Van der Graaf Generator embarked on a tour of the UK with Lindisfarne and Genesis, fellow Charisma Records artists.See also other pictures and live reviews from 1971 and 1972.Peter Hammill also appeared in Ciao 2001 Magazine in December 1972.If you ever wondered where the band's name came from or where the inspiration for many of the early album cover designs originated then pay it a visit."They spelt my name wrong" maybe! It's so easy just to slip away...Van der Graaf and to begin with, like most people, he found the music difficult to get into.We went to several gigs together and had a habit of trying to get back stage to meet PH.The person to talk to of course was Gordian Troeller, Peter Hammill's manager (and later Van der Graaf's).Peter Hammill's brother Andrew was at Sussex University in Brighton at the same time but we didn't meet despite efforts on the part of my Sussex Uni housemates (inc Richard) to contrive for us all to be at certain parties) Autographed Killers...Killers, Angels, Refugees, Peter Hammill's first book published in 1974, contains lyrics for all the songs up to "Silent Corner", poems, drawings and other interesting stuff.Richard could be quite funny and sent me this Christmas card many moon's ago that I came across recently.VdGG lyrics to suit any occasion. We knew all the songs by heart then, which would be difficult now with 40 albums to learn, and annoyed everybody with never ending renditions.During 1973 the band, without Peter Hammill, but including Nic Potter, released an instrumental album called The Long Hello. The album wasn't released in the UK until 1976.Peter Hammill answered some questions from a Melody Maker reader in the March 27th 1976 edition which included comments about The Long Hello.Peter Hammill, Dave Jackson, Hugh Banton and Guy Evans.See Geoff Barton's interview of May '75.See also Antony Thorncroft's review in the Financial Times. Not quite as I remember it!It just shows how subjective reviews are."There is a musical barrier which keeps out the trivial and the commercial, but also most of the threads that make for a worthwhile musical experience".Well, it was a worthwhile musical experience for me!The front cover sported an unusual picture, entitled "Band of Millions of Years", which was used to publicise the Godbluff tour and appeared on a compilation album cover.University of East Anglia concert At this time I was studying at N.He was a budding journalist and set up an interview with the band. The band played brilliantly and went down well.Interestingly since I wrote the above words I found an interview by Geoff Barton, which mentions "old" Van der Graaf songs and in particular Killer, and whether the band would play them. The article has a certain relevance to Reading and you can cut straight to that section).Water had got into the electrics and the sound system didn't work.See Reading Festival for more details. Then in early 1977, disaster struck!Hugh Banton and Dave Jackson left the band.String Driven Thing) on violin.Charles Dickie, a cellist, joined the group.Pictures of the band from 1977 to 1978 Van der Graaf albums from 1977 and 1978 The band also underwent a name change to Van der Graaf.Well, I suppose we used to call them that anyway. After Vital became the best selling Van der Graaf Generator album, in July 1978, the band split up and Peter Hammill resumed his solo carreer. Please noteCopyright exists on EVERYTHING within this website. This leader Peter Hammill.Only when I bought the album on the basis of several other interesting cuts did I rediscover the song with glee.Hammill can be harsh, and doesn't so much sing as shout.Only being familiar with a small proportion of this man's catalogue, I cannot say how this stacks up, except that it has a good number of potent moments and a denseness of sound that stands repeated listenings. Not a masterpiece, but certainly no sitting target for critics either.Since bailing out of his Liberal Studies in Science course at Manchester University in 1968, Peter Hammill has pursued an idiosyncratic career as songwriter, singer and musician.Their complex music, as often brutal as it was lyrical, fitted somewhat uneasily into the once and then niche of Progressive Rock.By the time the group finally folded Peter had already recorded seven solo albums, covering many lyrical and musical bases in the process. The Silent Corner could well have been the work of three entirely different artists: it is Hammill's voice, both artistic and physical, which unifies them.Japanese paper sleeve editions of these classic Peter Hammill titles!Real Time: Royal Festival Hall (Japanese in a deluxe, miniaturized LP sleeve.Warped electric guitars and vocals crushed into slabs of noise are as likely to appear as grand pianos or acoustic guitars. Many definitions of singularity exist and though several of them have some bearing on and resonance in this work the principle ones with which Peter identifies here are the personal (unusual, strange) and gravitational (Black Hole).Four be impressed by the emotion in Hammill's voice on the songs, 'Other Old Cliches' and 'Besides the One You Love' ...Skin is nonetheless Peter Hammill continuing to declare his own direction minute by minute, rather than plotting overarching career goals. There is more of a dependence on MIDI on this album, and a lot of obvious keyboard support, but the core human players come through loud an dclear, expecially Guy Evans on drums and David Jackson on saxes. After all, the last time they had done so had been twenty nine years previously.Expectations and stakes were high.Collective breath was held as they advanced on stage.Would it be worth risking the reputation of the past with these present efforts? With suprises as well as old favourities, new songs as well as recovered classics, the event was, in the end, a triumph for critics and public alike. This double CD contains every note from first to last in real time as a true document of a unique occasion. This is very exciting stuff indeed. The main theme here is the long dive down into not being who we were....Peter sings and plays all instruments alone.Experimentation and change have always been important to Peter and some of the sonic landscapes encountered here are strangely new. After all, we are all circling just outside the gravitational pull of our personal black holes...The Future Now (remastered) ....Virgin have now decided to put out the next eight solo albums which fall within their compass.I've been hard at work at the desk sprucing, buffing, polishing and shining them to present them in the best possible light. But they all have their fascinations and there's some cracking content, of course.I've written liner notes, of a sort, for all the releases....Hammill's second solo album that was originally recent years and I am really pleased that it's going to be out there once more. The artwork has also been spruced up.The previous recording (Enter K) was remastered last year and it's high time that this one, too, had some sonic afterburner applied to its tracks. The recordings were made in the manner already set down with 'Enter k': half the tracks were initiated in my home studio, to be is a return to a more traditional format.Accordion, guitar, piano, organ, bass and drums, in various combinations, give the album an 'unplugged' feel, and showcase a collection of Judge's songs that are as original, unusual, and downright quirky, as one would expect from this unconventional and surprising artist.Despite Judge's eclectic approach to songwriting, THE FULL ENGLISH sounds surprisingly coherent and consistent, due mainly to his choice of musicians.THE FULL ENGLISH an excellent introduction to this refreshingly unconventional, and very 'English', talent. This is the second edition of the epic concert of David Jackson in Guastalla, Italy, on Nov 23, 2002.Roms will play PAL DVD's.Otherwise you'll need an all code DVD player to view on your television. Most fans thought it would never happen. But Guy Evans, David Jackson, Hugh Banton and Peter Hammill have reunited as Van der Graaf Generator. This is not a nostalgic reunion to relive past glories, but a coming together of new experiences and fresh perspectives for the creation of new music as well as new live performances, the rebirth of a phoenix!EMI who have resurrected the Charisma label for the occasion. These have always been a feature of Van der Graaf playing and are quite whacky....The Goldberg Variations (J.As you will know, Hugh was the organist in Van der Graaf Generator. The Goldberg Variations was originally written for double manual harpsichord but lends itself equally well to church organ.Indeed, the transfer to this instrument enhances the clarity of many of the lines. The contrapuntal detail is further highlighted by the precise nature of the digital organ. For what it's worth I give my highest commendation to this CD and am absolutely delighted to include it in the Fie!The music is continuous for the whole hour. While coming from such an extremely specific time frame the music itself has a timeless quality.Modern music with a (serious) smile on the face. When the two performances were put in synch together it was immediately obvious that something quite different had occurred.CD: a most particular hour embedded in music. The music on the CD is continuous, of course. It has a certain smile, a certain sense of playfulness about it; but it is also quite serious. The Union Chapel Concert ....Guy Evans was invited to do whatever he wanted for a concert at Union Chapel. He decided to do a duet performance with Peter Hammill. And in the process the two of them invited a number of their favorite musicians to join them.As you'll know, there's always some difference in attitude, approach and style as I've gone from one to the next. This time I've restricted myself to writing and playing exclusively on acoustic guitar. It was also a project of interesting and challenging discipline. Now newly remastered by Peter Hammill and including the bonus track, 'Seven Wonders.Enter K is very much a hybrid set of recordings which makes up a pair with Patience. The masters were evidently originally intended for vinyl, still the only game in town at that time. This is a brilliant new album by Peter Hammill. It is an extremely engaging and very personal statement, almost as if he were whispering a message to you.Stuart Gordon (violin) and David Jackson (saxes and flutes). It followed on from the 'calm' CD, Fireships and was flagged at the time as being number one in the A Loud series.Planet Coventry' and 'Primo on the Parapet.Another song, 'The Noise' itself, clearly celebrates the joy of making a racket on stage. With the forthcoming prospect of the Van der Graaf Generator reunion it remains to be seen exactly how much of a noise PH is still prepared to make. This is Peter Hammill's latest album, a collection of songs recorded between January 1999 and February 2000.An album of strong passions, The Roaring Forties shows Peter Hammill at his strongest.None of this stuff is exactly comfortable: for the most part it is music from beneath the surface and behind the light. An alternate world of Sonix.Unsung' contains experimental instrumental work of an unpredictable and uncategorisable nature. As the title implies, the absence of lyrics means that not even any clues are offered. This is effectively the third in an originally unconscious series initiated with 'Loops and Reels' and continued with 'Sonix. It also bears relation to the work I did with Guy Evans on 'Spur of the Moment' and Roger Eno on 'The Appointed Hour. They are not trying to fit into any given genre, nor trying to jam genres togethr in (cold) fusion. For me, these pieces collectively present an alternative aural landscape. This' is the fortieth album for which Peter Hammill has been responsible...It is released on the eve of his fiftieth birthday, after thirty years of music making. The lead voice is, as always, insistently to the fore, with the passing of time and rites of passage remaining the central lyrical concerns. What is clear is that his appetite for the fray remains undiminished.Since the Kids' offer proof that This has not stopped yet....Performances are all from '92, around Europe. This wonderful collection features over two hours of music and a 12 page booklet full of commentary from PH.I'm very fond and which I believe has an extremely wide sonic palette.Spur of the Moment was the first collaborative venture by Peter Hammill and Guy Evans since their days as members of Van der Graaf Generator. The music is instrumental and entirely improvised.Although these pieces are incapable of being placed in any normal musical classification, they draw on the spirits, sounds and styles of all.Peter Hammill has been a writer, singer and performer for the last thirty years. The rhythm section of Guy Evans (drums) and Nic Potter (bass) had, of course, played with Peter in Van der Graaf Generator. It should not be forgotten, however, that they were also members of Glenn Fernando Campbell's Misunderstood.Peter had met him while both were performing with the Stranglers while Hugh Cornwell was in jail. This release presents, on CD 1, the original 'The Margin,' as recorded live in the UK in '83, in a remastered form. The K Group could and did play in funny time signatures and at times with great sensitivity.Gentlemen, the bar is open.Curly's Airships is a work of words and music on a grand scale. Many will recognize Judge Smith as one of the earliest members of Van der Graaf Generator and also the librettist for the opera, Fall of the House of Usher, with music composed and performed by Peter Hammill. The album also features notable guest appearances from Peter Hammill, David Jackson, Arthur Brown, Pete Brown, Paul Roberts and many more. This is not actually a Fie!Compiled by Hammill and past band members. It covers the years 1968
