developed by Dr.As the lessons repeat themselves and add new material, the system does not demand complete mastery of the material, since the material is reviewed at varying intervals throughout the course.Methodology 2 Pimsleur Learning Principles 2.Graduated Interval Recall 2.At varying intervals, the student is prompted to repeat a phrase after the speaker finishes it The student is then introduced to a new phrase and the meaning is explained After repeating several times, the student is asked to repeat a previous phrase, but integrating vocabulary from the new one.Pimsleur Learning Principles Dr.Paul Pimsleur developed his system using four principles he regarded as important to forming memory associations and language recall.Anticipation Language courses commonly require a student to repeat after an instructor, which Pimsleur believed was a passive way of learning.Pimsleur developed a "challenge and response" technique, where a student was prompted to translate a phrase into the target language, which was then confirmed.Pimsleur thought that the principle of anticipation reflected real life conversations where a speaker must recall a phrase quickly.Graduated Interval Recall Graduated Interval Recall is a method of reviewing learned vocabulary by having students rapidly recall learned material and then gradually reviewing the material at increasing intervals.Pimsleur's 1967 memory schedule was as follows: 5 seconds, 25 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 5 hours, 1 day, 5 days, 25 days, 4 months, 2 years.Core Vocabulary The Pimsleur method focuses on teaching commonly used words in hopes that this will lead to a comprehensive understanding of a "core vocabulary", but leaving the students breadth of vocabulary somewhat limited. The number of words needed to comprehend varies from language to language. The Pimsleur method teaches almost no grammar, instead leaving the student to infer the grammar through common patterns and phrases.Pimsleur believed that students of languages would learn better with their ears, as opposed to traditional written formats.Pimsleur called this "organic learning," which entails studying grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation simultaneously.Learning by listening is also intended to teach the proper accent, which cannot be learned through written material.Effectiveness Paul Nation's comprehensive review of vocabulary learning, Learning Vocabulary in Another Language, concluded that Pimsleur's "memory schedule" has been validated by research subsequent to Pimsleur's seminal paper.According to Nation's summary of the research, "effective retention of vocabulary requires a certain amount of repetition over spaced intervals".Criticism The Pimsleur system teaches little reading and writing. Some believe that a gradual understanding of word etymologies and how words are related to each other (which is facilitated by literacy) is key in developing beyond the beginner level in a language. One might have difficulty in responding to any variation of the phrases taught.Pimsleur rarely explicitly teaches grammar, instead relying on students picking up grammar by recognizing patterns in large numbers of sentences. Some critics believe this leads to a weaker understanding of grammar, and therefore, it may be difficult to comprehend sentence structures that were not encountered in Pimsleur.Although children acquire their native languages this way, they have much more exposure to the language than audio tapes provide.Pimsleur students only receive feedback on the phrases used in the Pimsleur program. However, this is true of any language course. Also, another problem some may have is that the Pimsleur course is American, so focuses on asking for dollars in the chosen language; it will also teach phrases in the foreign language like "I am American".For an English person using this course, it may be frustrating that the phrases being taught are focused on Americans; one will need a Dictionary in order to find the appropriate English words. Some of the Pimsleur courses are also a little out of date with currencies; for example, many of the European languages available for purchase still use the old currencies and not the Euro.Basic Statistical Analysis of Corpus and Cross Comparison among Corpora Akshar Bharati, et al.Learning Vocabulary in education. At the time, the foreign language education program at OSU was the major doctoral program in that field in the US.Pimsleur was later a Professor of Education and Romance Languages at The State University of New York at Albany, where he held dual professorships in Education and French. He did research on the psychology of language learning and in 1969 was Section Head of Psychology of Second Languages Learning at the International Congress of Applied Linguistics. For this, he studied the learning process of groups made of children, adults, and multilingual adults. The result of this research was the Pimsleur language learning system. In the period from 1958 to 1966, Pimsleur reviewed previously published studies regarding linguistic and psychological factors involved in language learning. He also conducted several studies himself.Pimsleur and his associates developed the Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery (PLAB) based on these three factors to assess language aptitude.Today, the PLAB is used to determine the language learning aptitude or even a language learning disability among secondary school students.Pimsleur died unexpectedly of pneumonia during a visit to France in learning method better or more effective than another? Is the high price of a Pimsleur Comprehensive language course justified by its effectiveness or quality?Pimsleurs language learning method was painstakingly developed to be an easy and effective learning system, and its unique approach puts it way ahead of the competition.Pimsleur Comprehensive course is the single best language learning product available, but the brilliant method designed for Pimsleur Comprehensive courses does not work as well for the shorter courses that Simon and Schuster releases under the Pimsleur name.Pimsleur, but they may not be ideal for everyone or may require additional complementary materials, depending on your learning goals.I'll go over the finer points of those courses and I'll show you why I think Pimsleur Comprehensive is the best language learning product available, but first let's take a quick look at the Pimsleur method. Each lesson begins with a conversation between two native speakers of the target language and then an instructor begins to prompt the listener to learn and repeat the words and phrases you just heard. You then participate in the scripted conversation you heard at the beginning, playing each role in a variety of situations.Later in the course, the first minutes of each lesson are for review and then new material is introduced and worked with. What makes Pimsleur so good is that it is so engaging. It may be a guided conversation and initially you are simply repeating the phrases and words as you heard them, but before long you will be prompted to say something in a new way, a way you haven't used or even heard yet. This is Pimsleurs Principle of Anticipation. This creative use of the language is necessary to not only learn it, but become proficient at it.The beauty of Pimsleurs method is in its simplicity.Pimsleur shows us how obvious it is that the focus should be on hearing and speaking the language, rather than learning boring grammar rules and verb conjugations, at least at first.Pimsleur shows us how learning a new language in a natural way is not only faster and easier, but the language stays with us for much longer. It is also a more fun and enjoyable experience.Pimsleur developed a technique he called Graduated Interval Recall. This more effectively moves the newly learned information from short term memory into long term memory, particularly when its being used in context with material you already know.Another technique Pimsleur products employ is simply to focus on the most important function words in the language.Pimsleur makes sure that you are familiar with these function words and can use them in a variety of situations. Many language methods waste time and space teaching you how to say 'raspberry', but that's not a very useful word for most people when you're learning a new language.Pimsleur seems to feel, and rightly so in my opinion, that you are better served by learning how the language actually works so you can go and look up that word in a dictionary when you want or need to know it, and by then you'll know what to do with it in the new language.Pimsleur Quick and Simple.By lesson 8 you have a reasonable idea of word order, can use numbers, ask for directions and know a few simple greetings.Pimsleurs focus on conversation gives you a relatively good accent and ability to ask and answer simple questions. The full Comprehensive Level course takes advantage of the Pimsleur system and builds proficiency by integrating grammar and syntax right into the phrases and conversation, and builds up that grammar lesson after lesson. This much shorter course can barely begin to use that system effectively.Even as an audio supplement, I think someone would be better off with Pimsleurs Instant Conversation. This course, like Quick and Simple, is also not a unique course under the Pimsleur name, but rather just the first 16 lessons of the Comprehensive course. Also like its Quick and Simple little brother, Instant Conversation just doesn't go far enough to use the Pimsleur system most effectively.Arabic (Eastern), Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Greek (Modern), Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian and Spanish. These are the language courses for which Simon and Schuster have not developed a full Comprehensive course under the Pimsleur name. The reading study at the end of each lesson takes away from time used to work on pronunciation and conversation, like in the other Pimsleur products. If it's cost effective to do a Compact Swedish then it is certainly cost effective to do a Swedish Comprehensive.Compact is available in the following languages : Albanian, Armenian (East and West), Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Swiss German, Haitian Creole, Indonesian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Portuguese (Continental), Swahili, Swedish, Romanian, Twi and Irish. In the past I've been critical of Simon and Schuster for updating their existing titles but not expanding on them or adding new ones using the Pimsleur method.Since I originally wrote this article, it seems that they have expanded some of their titles and are adding new ones. The following languages have been upgraded from Compact to Comprehensive courses : Thai, Farsi, Korean, Polish, Vietnamese, Czech, Hindi and Dutch are all Comprehensive level courses now.It seems that Simon and Schuster are also dealing with the high cost of Pimsleur Compact courses. These are being repackaged as courses entitled Learn to Speak and Understand that sells for less than Compact. The packaging is different but it is essentially the same course. The most popular languages have 3 levels. While Pimsleur Comprehensive can't substitute for a live tutor, it's as close as you can get. While I heartily recommend Pimsleur Comprehensive as a stand alone language learning method, I also recommend it as a supplement to almost any other method. You can't buy fluency, and Simon and Schuster certainly doesn't claim that Pimsleur can provide it.Armed with a dictionary and a verb book, you will have the experience and proficiency you need with the language to put those two books to work and begin to advance toward true fluency.Obviously cost is a factor here.Pimsleur Comprehensive is notoriously expensive. That's still a lot of money. My answer was "Yes" and I don't regret it, I love the Pimsleur method.Having said that, I also sold all three levels of Spanish on eBay recouping most of what I spent and saving someone else a little money for a fine product in the process. However, I wish that I understood the Pimsleur method better before I began it.French Comprehensive (Pimsleur Speak and Read Essential French) to brush up on my high school French.Italian or German from scratch with Pimsleur Comprehensive providing the core of that study campaign.I've never tried a language learning method that was so effortless and actually fun to use, and the results are excellent, at least for me.Pimsleur courses as audio supplements for another method when I have no choice (like Swedish).Pimsleur Comprehensive is, I believe, the single best language learning method.Arabic, Eastern (to level 2) Arabic, Egyptian also someone who got my lowest grade in college in foreign language! But, Pimsleur really, really, does teach you how to converse, if you are willing and able to pay the money, and put in the time. You won't know lots of vocabulary (but that's easy to learn later) but you will know how to construct all the basic sentences you need to.You'll be able to converse with people at the train station when your train is delayed, at the store when you buy something, etc.Doing the first one only will not really prepare you to converse, but you will be able to order at restaurants and stores, and be polite. Was this review helpful to you?"Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.Took these cassettes to Italy with me when I was about a third of the way through them. And recently I bought Ultimate Italian as a supplement. It's good, but nowhere near Pimsleur.Pimsleur is brilliantly designed to lock the learning into your memory. There are, of course, less expensive vendors of Pimsleur to be found on the internet, e.But the course is worth every Euro. If, on the other hand, you want to read and write in Italian, you should look for a different course or supplement this discovered Pimsleur earlier.Over the decades I have been exposed to countless different linguistic approaches to learning languages, but none have impressed me as much as that of Pimsleur. The language CDs available in German are far superior to the vast majority of the courses you can get in the English language, but still only Pimsleur teaches language in the same way that I have intuitively learned to learn languages on my own over the years. If you buy cheaper alternatives to Pimsleur you are short changing yourself severely. With Pimsleur you are guaranteed a meticulously structured approach to learning in which you can have complete confidence. With Pimsleur CDs and an MP3 player you can learn while you drive, in the plane, while sitting in the train, while waiting in long queues or while going around the supermarket.Half an hour here and there soon adds up.Needless to say my Russian friends are floored when I speak Russian. They say I speak with virtually no accent. With time I think I will expand my knowledge to the point that people think I am a native speaker. The things that came up in these situations were often almost word for word out the Pimsleur lessons which ingrains the ability to intuitively respond to these sort of verbal prompts. In the case of Italian in particular the proximity of the Latin languages to English is particularly suitable to the Pimsleur approach, and allows you to progress at a much faster rate than with, say Russian or Arabic.Pimsleur gives you the platform to further my language abilities in a way that no other course I have ever seen even comes close to.Although the intuitive natural learning techniques of Pimsleur should be the basis of learning languages, I am still a great believer in studying old fashioned grammar (I did Latin! For every language you can find yourself a ready nice grammatical text.Pimsleur would sell a text book companion to their recordings that makes learning grammar as fun as their through this program was so easy and enjoyable that it seemed entirely effortless.Pimsleur and was getting nowhere. The prospect of learning Chinese still seemed impossible. In this program each word is broken into syllables which are easy to pronounce and then they are linked into words and sentences and another wonderful thing about this program is that it begins by teaching you some very useful things to say, so that no matter how many words you have learned, what you've learned you'll be able to use because it deals with fulfilling your basic needs and finding your way around.I've used both Mandarin I and II, and they have been a big help in enabling me to conduct everyday conversations in China. The hard part about Chinese is that you don't run into any words that look even vaguely familiar. But the Pimsleur method is gradual. The first time you hear it, you have no idea what's being said, but by the end of the lesson you'll be able to understand it and participate in the same conversation. But I found there's a lot of value in going through each lesson several times. The method forces you to learn how the language really sounds, and you get lots of chances to practice getting the pronunciation right. There is a very small reading book, but it's not essential. The best introductory text I've found is "A Key to Chinese Speech and Writing" by Joel Bellassen and Zhang Pengpeng.Trouble is, it's hard to find. Was this review helpful to you? With Pimsleur, it is so simple to learn a foreign language that anyone can do it.I'm terrible at foreign languages yet even I can learn Mandarin. What I mean is I learn while walking to the train station and while taking the train to work.Repetition is the mother of all skill, and this is the basis of Pimsleur. But they are masters at making you think and formulate sentences. You don't repeat what they say, you say and then listen to the native speaker and then you repeat again and then listen again. It's like having a tutor sitting next to you, correcting you.The vocabularly is well planned to allow you to say a maximum of sentences. And the number of sentences you say grows exponentially with every new word or phrase you learn. One thing I will point out is that I think Mandarin is difficult enough that learning only from a CD is not enough. The reason is that each of us have a set of sounds we've learned over the years. It's possible to listen to the native speaker and then repeat using our own English sounds and not know that the sounds aren't correct. As proof of my theory, I will use me and my wife.American, fluent in French (with a strong American accent). We are both listening to the Pimsleur CDs yet when we say the same phrases in Chinese we say them differently! We even pronounce "wo" differently. In the beginning, after only a few Pimsleur lessons, no one understood me.I'm on lesson 18 my pronunciation should be better. My tutor says she understands me better but that I have an American accent.Sometimes we spend 5 minutes on one word and I just don't get it.But like I said, I am not good at foreing languages. So if you're really good at foreign languages, maybe the Pimsleur CD will suffice. If you're like me, I think you'll need access to a native speaker to help you with the pronunciation. Finally, one other thing important is to learn pinyin and that's not tought in Pimsleur.Somtimes it's not clear if it's a "d" or "t" etc. When I see the word in pinyin it's more clear.Overall pimsleur is excellent.Pimsleur because that is not Pimsleur's goal.Pimsleur's goal is to get you speaking Mandarin with only an audio program. The benefit of being able to do the lessons whenever you want, during time usually not very productive in my opinion justifies the purchase.Pimsleur than one hour with my tutor.See all 52 customer reviews...After owning these items for a few months, here is my brief review of each one for comparative purposes for those who are considering learning the language but are contemplating...The speakers on this series are generally extremely clear. Many other chinese audio lessons have speakers that mumble.About the accent I am huge fan of Pimsleur cds and have used them in German, Italian, and Greek, as well as Mandarin.CDs and have taken basic Mandarin classes too.The Pimsleur CDs are the best hands down. This is a wonderful course and I won't repeat what many people have already said...Excellent way to learn Chinese This is an excellent way to begin speaking Chinese, which isn't as formidable as you might think!Good but not if used alone The main flaw with the Pimsleur series is that there is no time spent explaining the phonetics of the language. It's supposed to mimic how children learn.I've just
