Liam O'Flynn (uilleann pipes, tin whistle). The name Planxty comes from a word used by the classic harper Turlough O'Carolan in many of his works, and is thought to mean a tribute to a particular person ("Planxty Irwin", for example, being a tribute to Colonel John Irwin of Sligo). It is also believed that its origin may stem from the Irish phrase "phlean on ti" meaning "from the house of".During the penal law era of Ireland's history songs sung through Irish were outlawed and it is believed that the use of the phrase Planxty followed by the name of the composer was to disguise the true identity of the composer (it was assumed that Planxty was the first name of the composer) while still giving them credit for the song. After recording Prosperous, they formed Planxty. The group's first major performance, opening for Donovan in Galway, was a huge success.Neither the audience nor the band knowing what to expect, were both pleasantly surprised.Irvine, unable to see the audience through the lighting, was worried that the crowd was on the verge of rioting.Planxty and in particular on Christy Moore was the singing of Irish Traveller John "Jacko" Reilly who hailed from Boyle, Co.It was from Reilly that Moore learned "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy," which was recorded on the first Planxty album, in addition to " The Well Below the Valley" and "As I Roved Out," which appeared on The Well Below the Valley.Planxty released the highly acclaimed single, The Cliffs of Dooneen, after which they were promptly signed to an exclusive contract in conjunction with Polydor Records. The group became very popular in the next few years in Ireland, Britain and Europe, and they recorded two more albums in the following two years. After that they split up, and a compilation called The Planxty Collection was released.Lunny in July of 1973, and Paul Brady stepped in for Christy Moore in 1974.Liam, the original lineup, reformed Planxty in 1979.They recorded three albums, and made several changes and additions to their lineup, most notably the joining of Matt Molloy, flautist from the Bothy Band, later with The Chieftains.Lunny and Christy Moore left to concentrate on Moving Hearts, and Andy and Liam started pursuing solo careers (the former in the band Patrick Street).Broadcaster and journalist Leagues O'Toole documented the band in the biography The Humours of Planxty, which was published by Hodder Headline in 2006.All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.See Copyrights for details.Planxty came about in 1972 when folk singer Christy Moore gathered a bunch of musicians for his upcoming album Prosperous.Lunny and Andy Irvine, formed Planxty (the name refers to a tune composed for a patron, particularly associated with O'Carolan).Their first eponymous album, known generally as the "Black Album" for it's cover art, stands as a landmark in Irish folk music, mixing authentic traditional music, with the fire of modern folk, and the ballad singing that the likes of the Dubliners and the Clancys were popularising. The singing of Moore and Irvine was backed by O'Flynn on uileann pipes and whistles, as well as guitar, bouzouki, mandolin and bodhran. The group grew to huge status in Ireland, Britain and continental Europe, recorded two other albums in the next two years and then split up, with "The Planxty Collection" coming out as a good compilation of the first three albums.Personnel changes along the way included Johnny Moynihan replacing Donal Lunny in July of 1973 (Lunny guested on Cold Blow and the Rainy Night) and Paul Brady stepping in for Christy Moore in 1974.Noel Hill and Tony Linnane on The Woman I Loved So Well.Bill Whelan, plays keyboards on both albums, and was also on Prosperous (yes, the same Bill Whelan who created Riverdance). In the end, Christy Moore and Donal Lunny left to concentrate on Moving Hearts and Planxty broke up for the second and final time. One other postscript to the group, and another link with Bill Whelan and Riverdance: in 1981, Planxty performed a Bill Whelan arrangement called Timedance as the intermission piece during the Eurovision song contest, held that year in Ireland, and later released it as a single.WEA Ireland 2401011 Shanachie 79035 1984 Aris!More Liner notes from The Planxty Collection by Colin Irwin give an excellent pen name is a term for a song composed for a paying client).Their mix of bouzouki (now almost considered a traditional instrument, then viewed as an aberration!Moore and Irvine, still stands the test of time.It was a brilliant act of faith, proclaiming that traditional Irish music could sound startlingly new without being bastardized. No one has tagged this product for Amazon search yet.The easiest 'folk' music could be every bit as exciting as rock and roll.Planxty was a deceptively powerful band.Only our rivers' is excruciatingly poignant in expressing the yearning for freedom in the Irish heart.Liam Og O Floinn is perhaps the finest living practitioner of the Uilleann pipes. His fingers are deft and expressive, flying one moment at breakneck speed, the next tenderly coaxing from the pipes a slow melody so achingly beautiful it could wring tears from stones.Moore's guitar and bodhran add body and bottom to the mix.Merrily kissed the Quaker', 'Si bheag, si mhor', and the Turlouch O Carolan composition 'Planxty Irwin' are all delightful. This disc, to me, is one of the trio of classic Planxty albums (although I must say they're all very good), with THE WELL BELOW THE VALLEY and AFTER THE BREAK rounding out the triumvirate.AFTER THE BREAK, and were joined by the great Matt Molloy on flute.Donal Lunny seems to have a Midas touch (in quality if not in sales). He was a founding member of The Bothy Band, and the mastermind behind the amazingly innovative Moving Hearts (which also included Christy Moore on a couple of albums)....If you think you know Irish traditional music, the two are very different (I'm told that Planxty is more pure Irish, but I'm inclined to suspect that they're just from different parts of Erin) though both stand up very well in their own right. Was what I was in 1974, which could never have been said for the Dubliners who were a bit hail and hearty in the Val Doonican style of irish entertainment of the time.Planxty had street cred and were fantastic musicians.Well, the Dubliners(or Planxty for that matter) weren't trying to appeal to hairy english rock fans, they were just doing their thing.Check out Luke Kelly ( of the Dubliners) Cyprus. As Sandy Denny wonderfully used to sing, "Who knows where the time goes?"Since the last update, I've had another lovely Easter in Cyprus (including the christening of the child of friends, as pictured), various day trips round Southern England, a long weekend in Brno (tips coming up, honestly), a trip home to Northern Ireland for the wedding of my best mate's daughter, and, undoubtedly, some things that I've temporarily forgotten about.Actually, it's not as scary as I thought it would be.There are several infant children in Cyprus who call me Papou (grandfather) and several more older ones who call me Theo (uncle), and, much as I protest, I really quite enjoy it.Their hospitality and generosity will not be soon forgotten, I can tell you.Fish convention in Haddington, been done yet.I've noithing planned in the near future (that's not to say some impromptu trip won't happen) so hopefully I'll have time to catch up.Send Photo to a FriendCanary Wharf, Docklands, far too many cliches about travel but, like most cliches they are rooted in an element of truth. To return to the beginning, there was a lovely quote in the Palin book, written whilst in Dubai,
