G), Book of the Earth (burial chamber J), Book of the Dead (corridor C, side chamber Cc, side chamber Cf, side chamber Ja), and Book of the Heavenly Cow (side chamber Jc) as well as the king offering to various deities (throughout the tomb). There are unique representations in the subsidiary chambers (Ba, Bb, Cg, Ch) off the first two corridors dealing with such activities as food preparation and provision, burial equipment and illustrations of Book of the Dead spells.Noteworthy features: This tomb has multiple side chambers off the first and second corridors B and C, decorated with unusual extant decoration in painted sunk relief on plaster survives only in corridor B, as well as gates B and F.The principal decorative theme consisted of depictions of Rameses III followed by a prince, time of Rameses III, however, the world was going through great upheavals. That long period of stability in the Middle East brought about by Thutmose III and continued by Rameses II's treaties with the Hittites was about to come to an end. This was the time of the Trojan Wars and the fall of Mycenae. There was still one more moment of glory for these most ancient of ancients.During the first few years of his reign, Rameses III consolidated the work of his father, Setnakhte, by bringing unity to the country. Therefore, in his fifth year when the Libyans attacked, Egypt was well prepared.Merenptah had repulsed their last offensive, now again, an organized and efficient Egyptian army easily defeated them. The Sea Peoples were on the move.To counter this threat Rameses acted quickly.Dispatches were sent to frontier posts with orders to stand firm until the main army could be brought into action. The clash, when it came was a complete success for the Egyptians.Their aim now, was to defeat the Egyptian navy and force an entry up the river.Although the Egyptians had a reputation as poor seamen they fought with the tenacity of those defending their homes. Then the Egyptian navy attacked using grappling hooks to haul in the enemy ships. The power of the Sea Peoples was broken in the Nile delta but some, the biblical Philistines, settled in Palestine. With the exception of one more conflict with the Libyans, the rest of Rameses III's long reign was peaceful.Rameses III had two principle wives plus a number of minor wives and it was one of these minor wives, Tiye, who was the cause of his destruction. She hatched a plot to kill him with the aim of placing her son, prince Pentaweret, on the throne. The conspiracy failed and the traitors were arrested but not before Rameses was mortally wounded.Fourteen officials sat in judgment and all the accused, with the exception one, was found guilty and condemned to commit suicide.Rameses III's death marks the end of an era.He had ruled for 31 years and was the last of the great Pharaohs. There were disputes between officials and governors and infighting between the north and south. The priesthood became over powerful and eventually they took control of the government. From this time onwards others would determine the destiny of the Mediterranean world. The Assyrians, Persians, Greeks and eventually the Romans were to become the lead players on the stage of international politics.New Egyptian reference book, for all ages.It has recently come to my notice that some people are taking my images and text, from this site, and then passing it difficulties and internal strife which would eventually lead to the collapse of the Twentieth Dynasty.Ramesses III defeated them in two great land and sea battles. He claims that he incorporated them as subject peoples and settled them in Southern Canaan, although there is evidence that they forced their way into Canaan.Ramesses III, unable to admit defeat, claimed that it was his idea in the first place.Their presence in Canaan may have contributed to the formation of new states in this region such as Philistia after the collapse of the Egyptian Empire. The presence of significant quantities of volcanic soot in the air prevented much sunlight from reaching the ground and also arrested global tree growth for almost two full decades until 1140 BC.VII whereas the prices for fowl and slaves remained constant.Osirid statues of Ramses III at his temple at Medinet Habu."Powerful one of Ma'at and Ra, Beloved of Amun, Ra bore him, Ruler of Heliopolis".The conspiracy against the king Thanks to the discovery of papyrus trial transcripts (dated to Ramesses III), it is now known that there was a plot against his life as a result of a royal harem conspiracy during a celebration at Medinet Habu.Isis's son, Ramesses IV, was the eldest and the successor chosen by Ramesses III in preference to Tey's son Pentawere. There is little doubt that all of the main conspirators were executed: some of the condemned were given the option of committing suicide (possibly by poison) rather than being put to death.Judges who took part in the carousing were severely punished. In other words, not only were the criminals killed in the physical world, but also in the afterlife. They would have no chance of living on into the next world, and thus suffered a kind of 'second death'.This could have permitted him to be mummified and move on to the afterlife. It is not known if the assassination plot succeeded. In one respect the conspirators certainly failed. The crown passed to the designated successor, Ramesses IV.Ramesses III seems to have been doubtful as to the chances of his son to succeed him and in the Great Harris Papyrus he implored Amen to ensure his son's rights.Their mines were found and (they) yielded copper which was loaded by tens of thousands into their ships, they being sent in their care to Egypt, and arriving safely."He decorated the walls of his Medinet Habu temple with scenes of his Naval and Land battles against the Sea Peoples. This monument stands today as one of the best preserved temples of the New Kingdom. The mummy of Ramesses III was discovered by antiquarians in 1886 and is regarded as the prototypical Egyptian Mummy in numerous Hollywood movies.Van Siclen, "A Chronology of the New Kingdom" in Studies in Honor of George R.Hughes, who was buried in QV52 in the Valley of the Queens.Ramesses III who probably outlived him.Apparently devoted to Ramesses II, Ramesses III gave his sons names that followed those of the earlier king's sons.II's son, who rose to the position of High Priest.Sethirkhopshef held the office of Master of Horse.Tiy apparently wished for her son, called in this papyrus, Pentewere, to ascend to the throne of Egypt.Against this background was hatched a plot against the king's life.Preparations for this included magical spells and wax figurines which were smuggled into the harem.Though the record of the actual trial is lost, there were apparently three different prosecutions.Egypt, for a time at least, this firm action kept other enemies at bay.Hittites, Qode, Carchemesh, Arzawa and Cyprus were wasted, and they set up a camp in southern Syria. They bore fore before them as they came forward towards Egypt.Indeed, Cyprus had been overwhelmed and its capital, Enkomi, ransacked. They destroyed the Hittite capital, Hattusas, as well as many other empires.Cilicia in northern Syria, razing Alalakh and Ugarit to the ground.People, who were displaced from their homes by events that are as of yet unknown to us.Ramesses III's predecessors (perhaps most notably Merenptah) had to deal with similar bands of people. This was not simply a military campaign.Their intention was to settle in Egypt.Egypt
