Travis was born in Marshville, North Carolina, the son of Bobbie, a textile factory worker, and Harold Traywick, a horse breeder, turkey farmer, and construction business owner.While growing up, Travis was forced to take guitar lessons by his father and began performing at the age of eight with his brother, Ricky.Travis often fought with his father and soon dropped out of high school.He became a juvenile delinquent and was arrested for various offenses, including auto theft and burglary.Harold Traywick entered Randy and Ricky in a talent contest at a nightclub called "Country City, USA" in Charlotte, North Carolina.He first recorded for Paula Records and released two unsuccessful singles, "She's My Woman" and "Dreamin'".Hatcher pleaded with the judge and Travis was released in her custody with the warning that if the judge ever saw him again "he'd better bring his toothbrush, because he would be going to jail for a very long time."Travis moved in with Hatcher.This put further strain on her already fragile marriage.Hatcher took a job as manager of a nightclub, "The Nashville Palace" and hired Travis as a cook and singer.Career
In 1982, Travis recorded an independent album Randy Ray Live and Lib Hatcher used it to secure a deal with Warner Bros."On the Other Hand" in 1986.His debut album, Storms of Life, went on to sell more than 4 million copies.Always and Forever was No.Travis and Hatcher married in 1991.The project included fellow singers Garth Brooks, Kenny Rogers and Kathy Mattea.In 1997, Travis parted ways with Warner Brothers.He moved to DreamWorks Nashville and recorded You and You Alone, which produced the top 10 hits "Out of My Bones" and "Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man."The single "Three Wooden Crosses" from the Rise and Shine album reached No.CMA song of the year in 2003.Travis continues to act in film and television.Discography

petty crimes on a path heading straight toward prison.With the help and direction of the club's owner, Lib Hatcher, the teenager underwent a startling transformation.He recorded for a tiny label, Paula Records, and, in classic country fashion, drove from radio station to radio station throughout the South to promote his work.Back then, not a single executive on Music Row could hear the possibilities in Travis' subtly shaded backwoods baritone.He was turned down by every record label in town.Hatcher took a job managing a nightclub called The Nashville Palace.Randy Ray Live was enough for Hatcher to secure Travis a deal with Warner Bros.In 1985, the label released the single "On the Other Hand," which only made it to No.Billboard country singles chart.Travis' second single, "1982," was a Top 10 hit that kicked his career into high gear.Travis followed it up with charttopping hits "Diggin' Up Bones" and "Forever and Ever, Amen," which won the Country Music Association's single of the year award in 1987.Travis won the CMA's prestigious Horizon Award in 1986, won album of the year honors in 1987 for Always and Forever and took home male vocalist of the year trophies in 1987 and 1988.Old 8x10, his third set, also won a Grammy.To be sure, the first boom in the "new country" movement had sounded.Both volumes of his Greatest Hits became sales blockbusters.Later that year, he and Alan Jackson collaborated on Jackson's No."She's Got the Rhythm (And I Got the Blues).""If I Didn't Have You" and "Look Heart, No Hands."In 1994, Travis launched his film career with a variety of spotlight with Top 5 singles "Out of My Bones," and "Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man," and the Top 10 single "The Hole."John Grisham's The Rainmaker and the Patrick Swayze feature Black Dog.Travis released a second DreamWorks album, A Man Ain't Made of Stone in 1999.In 2000, he followed with Inspirational Journey, a contemporary Gospel album on Warner Bros.Its first single, "Three Wooden himself has definitely felt the power in the material."There are some gospel songs," he reflects, "that emotionally hit you in a way that most country songs don't."Not that Travis had much background in gospel music going into this new section of his career.He'd been raised in North Carolina on a steady diet of country music by the likes of Hank Williams, George Jones and Merle Haggard.Word of God, and I didn't listen to gospel music.Ricky, to do "Peace in the Valley".There were a couple others, but mainly that one, so my knowledge of gospel music was extremely small."His litany of jail time, drug use, fights and car accidents is legendary.She took custody and not only encouraged his development as a performer, but also encouraged study of the Bible.Travis and Hatcher moved to Nashville in the 1980s, and 20 years ago, he netted his first country hits, "1982" and "On The Other Hand," setting the stage for an explosive spurt in which he led a charge by Nashville's country divisions back to a more traditional sound.Rather than simply reflecting events that happened in others' lives, gospel music has the power to change.Travis sees it in the people who say his performances have helped heal broken relationships or inspired people to battle their addictions.And he remembers one father who approached him after a concert, to tell Travis about a family drama in which his son was about to marry a woman who was pregnant with a child conceived during a rape by someone else."Having the music ministry adds to the workload," he admits, "but it's something well songs themselves and their message.Rather than change his style and sell out, Travis and his producer actually went deeper into country music's origins than ever before, tracing it back to the old Gospel tunes still etched in many memories.This song is just fantastic and starts this effort off with a bang.There's nothing more to say.The melody and arrangement of this sound like a pretty country some of the "hip" young pretend cowboys whose big claim to fame is a pair of tight jeans and a new cowboy hat.Randy Travis burst on the scene with Storms of Life and those who love his music haven't gone away and Travis hasn't either.Hopefully he will continue to release a country album once in a blue moon also just to remind us what real country sounds like.If you doubt just how great this 19 song CD is, just take a listen to track 4, Shout to the Lord.It is one of the prettiest Christian songs ever written, and it has never been sung more beautifully than Randy Travis does here.Grab your gospel.Nor, really, do I consider this album a "gospel" album.I've always said that Randy Travis was meant to sing country...It just so happens that, when he turns his growly baritone to songs of faith, he can melt an atheist's heart.GOSPEL TRAIN is a record to be reckoned with, and not just because it has God and an entire faith backing it.Call it gospel, call it acoustic, call it country...I've been a fan of Randy Travis since his 1986 debut, STORMS OF LIFE.Standout tracks include the two songs with the Blind Boys of Alabama providing backround vocals: "Swing Down Chariot" and
