arrangements and performers are all first rate and this album shows the orchestra's wide range from novelty to jazz to sweet to sophisticated. The orchestra's rich, classy style is also well suited with two Fred Astaire vocals.Three of the novelty numbers allow Ray Noble personally to get in on the fun.Although some might find his upper class British twit persona irritating, his timing and wit on "Suspicion!"There are several orchestral pieces, including "Cherokee" and "Harlem Nocturne," which show the development of the later Ray Noble sound and should not be missed.Like all Living Era products, this is a fine collection, well reproduced. Was this review helpful to you?So from the outset there was a cause for conflict between the forthright Mr.Tony Martin and Fred Astaire both recorded with Noble at a later stage, and he himself wasn't above playing a Hooray Henry, as heard here in "Slumming On Park Avenue".His forte however was composing and arranging (three of his most romantic ballads are included), and his Indian Suite ranks high, both as his tribute to the native American people, and because "Cherokee" became one of the standards of the Swing Era.All of these, and more, are present in this sparkling compilation.I'm particularly glad that it includes the beautiful ballad "Harlem Nocturne" which I used to own on 78.Was this review helpful to you?See all 3 Tommy Dorsey Band in the late '30s.Many of those remarkable songs were given prominent voice when Ray Noble led in the words of the New York Times' John Wilson, "an extraordinary American jazz band," in the RCA Building's glittering centerpiece, The Rainbow Room.English journal of popular music and jazz, The Melody Maker. At 21, he became a staff arranger for the BBC and a year later was named a musical advisor for His Master's Voice (HMV) Records.Noble wrote his first major hit, the immortal "Goodnight Sweetheart," in 1931, and soon followed it with "By The Fireside," "I Found You" and "What More Can I Ask."Glenn Miller, helped Noble organize an American orchestra, which at various times in its evolution, included such future bandleaders as Claude Thornhill, Charlie Spivak, Pee Wee Irwin, Will Bradley and soloists Bud Freeman and George Van Epps.Buddy Clarke's number one American hits "Linda" and "I'll Dance At Your Wedding."Noble continued producing hit recordings in the late '30s, and records of his compositions, "Cherokee," by the Charlie Barnet Band and "I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You," by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra were widely recognized as swing era classics.Noble also played musical and comedy roles on the George Bums and Gracie Allen radio shows and with ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen as a stooge for Bergen's famous partner, Charlie McCarthy. He died in London in April 1978 at age 71.His songs, however, live on as a living monument to his great composing skills.Noble's recordings sold well in the United States, and in 1934 he decided to move across the Atlantic, taking Bowlly with him.In contrast to the straight dance music that his British orchestra had played Noble embraced jazz upon his arrival in America.Noble's new group featured such talented artists as trumpeters Charlie Spivak and Pee Wee Erwin, trombonist Will Bradley, saxophonist Bud Freeman, guitarist Fred van Eps, and pianist Claude Thornhill.Though jazz was prevalent in its book it was on the ballads where the group shined, particularly on numbers which featured Bowlly.Though Noble's orchestra proved popular with the public, backstage the story was not as happy.Miller emerged as a favorite among many of the men, a fact often resented by Noble. The band also put in a grueling schedule, working well into the night seven days a week.Stress levels were high, and many of the key musicians had left by the end of 1936.He eventually returned to England, retiring to Jersey in the Channel Islands.Ray Noble died of cancer in 1978."Bob and Ray" Titles (Exact Matches) (Displaying 1 Result) 1."Ray
