| ROM projects, and undertaken six major world tours.Throughout their career, spanning nearly four decades, they have maintained complete anonymity.Who are the Residents?The Residents supposedly hail from Shreveport, Louisiana, where they met in high school in the 1960s.Newer information indicates they are probably from Slidell, Louisiana, and picked Shreveport as the "place to be from" since it is the city in Louisiana that was furthest from Slidell.Whilst attempting to make a living, they began to experiment with tape machines, photography, and anything remotely to do with "art" that they could get their hands on.Philip Lithman and the mysterious N.The group purchased crude recording equipment and instruments and began to make tapes, refusing to let an almost complete lack of musical proficiency stand in the way.Residents Unincorporated
In 1969 the group began to make the first of their unreleased tapes.Rusty Coathangers for the Doctor and The Ballad of Stuffed Trigger.Smelly Tongues fan club.Cryptic says there are lots of tapes dating back decades, but they were all recorded before the group had officially become "The Residents" so the band do not consider them to be part of their discography.Album" (he describes it as "okay at best" in "Uncle Willie's Cryptic Guide to the Residents"), but awarded the tape an "A for Ariginality".Because the band had not included any name in the return address, the rejection slip was simply addressed to "The Residents".The members of the group then decided that this would be the name they would use (first becoming Residents Unincorporated, then shortening it to the current name).The first performance of the band using the Residents moniker was at the Boarding House in San Francisco in 1971.In 1972 they moved to San Francisco and formed Ralph Records.By this time, The Cryptic Corporation was operating as a partnership and incorporated to take over the running of Ralph Records.Album Era
Before the Santa Dog single and while recording Meet the Residents, The Residents undertook one of their first major projects: the ambitious Vileness Fats film project.The Residents saw this project as the opportunity to create the ultimate cult film.After four years of filming (from 1972 to 1976) the project was reluctantly canceled due to time, space and monetary constraints.Santa Dog is considered by both The Residents themselves and their fans to be the "official" start of the band's recorded output.This is so because it was the first to be released to the public.Shortly after this release, the band left San Mateo and relocated to San Francisco.The Residents, at this point, were at a rough point in their career.The Residents were unbothered by this deviation from their plan since the 1978 decision to release the album would not affect the philosophical conditions under which it was originally recorded.The original songs were finally removed leaving entirely new and bizarre performances.The music video for this album was shot on the sets that were built for Vileness Fats.Following The Third Reich 'n' Roll came Fingerprince, a particularly ambitious project not unlike the earlier Not Available recordings.However, this idea was dropped when the band discovered that the Monty Python comedy troupe had executed the very same idea three years earlier with their Matching Tie and Handkerchief album.Fingerprince album on the CD reissues.This album got the band some attention from the press (namely New Musical Express, Sounds and Melody Maker), and dropped most of their reliance upon the Theory of Obscurity.The Residents remixed the "songs" in disco style, the results of which appeared on the EP Diskomo.Eskimo was reissued in surround sound on DVD in 2003.The Commercial Album (1980) consisted of 40 songs that, like Eskimo, rejected traditional song structure.The liner notes state that songs should be repeated three times in a row to form a pop song.KFRC forcing the station to play each track of their album over three days.This prompted an editorial in Billboard magazine questioning whether the act was art or advertising.When MTV was in its infancy, The Residents' videos were in heavy rotation since they were among the few music videos available to broadcasters.The Residents' earliest videos are in the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection and were eventually released together in 2001 on the Icky Flix DVD, which includes an optional audio track of remixes.Snakefinger presented projected films of the Residents prior to live performance during this time.Other network competitors to MTV such as the USA network presented Residents videos but the videos were not on MTV.The Mole Show: The start of the Live Era
The 80s saw the release of the Mark of the Mole album (and its sequels) and the band's first official tour (The Mole Show), narrated nightly by Penn Jillette.Many think, after observation of official clues in liner notes such as those found in Demons Dance Alone, that the Mole Show caused several members of the Residents to leave, leaving Mr.This tour is also noted for being the first time The Residents appeared on stage wearing their trademark eyeball masks and tuxedos.The performance featured The Residents in front of painted back drops used to help illustrate the story.Penn Jillette would come out between songs telling long intentionally pointless stories.During one performance Penn was assaulted by an audience member while handcuffed to the wheelchair.The 13th Anniversary show
After being approached by their Japaneses distributor to do a 2 week run of shows in Japan The Residents created the 13th Anniversary tour.While the musical performance was more mainstream the stage show was another over the top spectacle.Featuring inflatable Giraffes, Dancers in eye ball masks illuminating the darkened stage with work lights, and a lead vocalist dressed in a garish yellow suit wearing a Nixon mask.After the two week run in Japan the residents took the show through the US.Backstage at the Hollywood Palace show in December 26, 1985 one member's eyeball mask (Mr.The eye was returned by a devoted fan who discovered where the thief lived and stole it back (although Homer Flynn has stated that the person who returned the mask was most probably the thief himself).It was put into retirement because it was now "unclean" (and in a bad condition) and had become a superfluous shell.Cube E
Was a three act performance covering the history of American Music.It was a step up from previous shows, featuring more elaborate dance numbers and sets.Part one covering cowboy music was first performed on German television as "Buckaroo Blues".It featured the singer and 2 dancers wearing giant cowboys hats around a glowing campfire.The act ended when a giant cube head rose from the back of the stage.An elderly Elvis performing songs for his grandchildren.The show ends with Elvis a inflated Elvis dying as a result of the British Invasion.Wormwood
Based around bible stories stories, featured the residents departing from preprogramed music and once a gain using a live band.It featured the male and female lead singers switching leads depending on what characters were needed.Act one consisted of one off stories about individual bible characters.Act 2 focused on suites of songs about bible figures such as Abraham, Moses, and King David.In Athens Greece one of The Residents had to leave the stage after being struck by a rock hurled from the audience.Eye", a surreal biography of Elvis Presley and the birth of rock and roll.Multimedia Era
One of the noted Residents projects of the 90s is "Freak Show."This marked the beginning of The Residents' obsession with emerging computer technology in the 1990s."Freak Show" was also a stage performance by a theater company at the Archa Theater in Prague that premiered on November 1, 1995, and a comic book.Several of the songs were also performed live during the 1997 25th anniversary concerts at the Fillmore in San Francisco.Band Era
More recently The Residents have recorded the dramatic album "Demons Dance Alone" (also a tour and DVD in 2002) and "Animal Lover" in 2005.The Residents many projects.In February of 2005 the Residents toured Australia as part of the "What is Music?"Anniversary Tour: The Way We Were.They added video projections and unusual flexible screens to the stage set, creating an unsettling ambiance.The performances on the Way We Were tour were recorded and were released on CD and DVD in 2005.River of Crime was their first project with Warner Music Group's Cordless label.Following the success of River of Crime, The Residents launched their weekly Timmy video project on YouTube.In 2007 they did the music for the documentary Strange Culture and also released a double instrumental album, Night of the Hunters.Who are the Residents?Fox (born 1945), and John Kennedy in 1976, all of whom denied having been band members.The Residents themselves don't grant interviews, though Flynn and Fox have occasionally commented to the media.Nolan Cook, who has been working with the band recently, denied in an interview that Fox and Flynn are the Residents, saying that he has come across such rumors, and they are completely false.William Poundstone, author of the Big Secrets books, claimed Flynn and possibly Fox are likely members of The Residents, probably the group leaders; this is probably the most widespread belief among the group's fans.Flynn is the lyricist (a conclusion buttressed by the fact that his voice bears an uncanny resemblance to that of the Singing Resident) and that Fox writes the music.Flynn and Fox as the composers of all original Residents songs.Flynn and Fox are merely trusted managers who both handle the Residents' business and protect their identities, makes them the logical choice to be assigned the copyrights.Since 1976, the Residents' recordings have all listed their producer as "The Cryptic Corporation," presumably meaning Fox in particular.Many other rumors have come and gone over the years, including the idea that the band members are physically disfigured; that 60s psychedelic band Cromagnon shared members with the band; and that the band members are in fact The Beatles in disguise.The 13th Anniversary Show Live in the U.Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?See Copyrights for details.One of my jobs was to come up with the different words we wanted to use, including the name!The naming discussions were usually between me, Philip, Hunter and Peter (both of whom aren't here any more) with feedback from everyone else.We also thought about 'members' (boring!Residents', however, seems most descriptive of people who have a stake in the world and how it grows.The term is not generally applied under the following conditions:
People who have only created an account, but never logged in
People who have had accounts created on their behalf for promotional events
People who have created an account, and logged in a few times then stopped using the account

Residents engage in a bewildering array of activities, just as people do in real life.Residents explore, interact with one another, and create new "content."Exploration is like travel in the real world, one searches for places which might be interesting, and then goes there, sometimes even at random.Interaction is mostly via chat or instant messaging, not unlike the popular Internet applications, except that full 3D visuals are included.Creation is the use of software tools to change the appearance and behavior of the Second Life virtual world.Some Residents will have an avatar that is clearly human male or female, and some will have an avatar where the gender is less obvious, or entirely androgynous; it is easy for a user to change the appearance of the avatar to either gender.As usual, residents are free to move in and out of these worlds as they see fit.Virtual property rights come into play here, since the property owner can choose to expel residents who don't abide by the property regulations, which in these case might include dress, language, and behavior.Some of the subcultures in Second Life revolve around events.Events include many activities related to arts, culture, charity, support groups, commerce, discussion, education, games, contests, nightlife, entertainment, pageants, and sports.The Owner, Member (referred to by the client as Everyone) or the title for any custom roles may appear superimposed above the name of the Resident's avatar.Residents may participate in up to 25 groups, and may choose which group's title to display at any given time.Second Life (commonly abbreviated as SL, but 2L is also used) interests.Linden Lab actively promotes the concept that Residents retain the intellectual property rights to objects they create (although they are required to offer Linden Lab a limited license for the purposes of promotion and marketing.Only LSL scripts and the basic 3D objects can be created solely with the client (although a future release will enable animations to be created within the client).Textures can be applied to the surface of any 3D object, land, clothing, an avatar's skin (including tattoos) and can be used as scripted particles.Every resident has access to a library of textures, animations, sounds and objects, found in the Library folder).JPEGs, although smaller in file size, are not recommended since they will be converted to JPEG2000 file format on upload regardless of original file format.TGA files have the added advantage of alpha channel transparency.Residents of Second Life are represented in the environment by an avatar.Animation Overriders (intended to supplement or replace the stock set of animations) using LSL to trigger BVH format animations.Second Life Residents have awaited since it was first announced by Linden Lab before June, 2002.Resident can view what is being created as it is being created.Attachments can be something as simple as a pair of glasses, or a complex series of objects in order to make the avatar look like something else entirely.Whereas prims are based on simple geometrical shapes, as cylinders, cubes, or spheres, sculpted prims are based on bump maps, that is, a 2D pattern which describes any kind of continuous closed surface.No holes are allowed in sculpted prims, anyway.Scripting
Residents can apply scripts to created objects, thereby controlling the behavior of the objects within the environment.Second Life uses its own scripting language, called Linden Scripting Language (LSL).LSL is used to drive all interactivity in Second Life that isn't provided by the interface.For instance, while it is possible to sell an object by leaving the object out with the correct attributes set via the interface, it becomes increasingly difficult the larger a single object is, the more numerous a collection of objects are, or for objects that are updated on a regular basis.Textures, scripts, animations, gestures and notecards cannot be sold by themselves (although they can be transferred between Residents in such a manner), requiring them to be held within a containing object.Games, doors, flashing lights, and basically anything that is seen in Second Life that is interactive is scripted.Linden Labs also has business ties with other companies, and these are sometimes seen as having disproportionate influence by Second Life residents.What influence this has has been a matter of debate in the Second Life Community.This is often abbreviated as "RL" or "FL" by Second Life residents, just as the "SL" abbreviation is nearly ubiquitous.Many second life residents refuse to connect their "RL" with their "SL," and argue that their Second Life existence stands or falls on its own merits, including Gwyneth Llewelyn and Sophrosyne Stenvaag.Linden Labs and Real Life often combine to produce pressures on residents to pay the usage fees on Second Life virtual land, which requires earning money through selling of goods, virtual land itself, or services, or other activities which are intended to accrue Linden Dollars.These corporations hire builders, there have been some court cases involving Second Life, in general, it has not been established how much actual influence has been exerted in Second Life by RL governments, though the gambling ban by Linden Labs and the imposition of the VAT are widely blamed by residents on government interference.One of the particular fears is the loss of the anonymity which many residents use to conduct
